What style they look for, what makes them feel comfortable. I also feel that competition is healthy. Competition works out best for the customer. They get the best and after all, the customer is most important!” Pinky Patel - Pinky is a creative genius and feels that her mother’s talents live on in her. She brings this creative energy to Nikun Events and to every wedding that she plans and organizes. After having helped out several friends and family put weddings together, Pinky realized that this is something she truly loves doing. It also makes us suffer from low energy levels as well as low self esteem. Besides being harmful to our health, obesity also has a negative aging effect on our appearance. With the right approach you can do something about your weight and here are some natural ways to get started. Please send your questions and comments to [email protected]. GET STARTED Often, when you want to lose weight, you simply do not know where to begin. The first thing you will want to begin with would be a visit to your general physician and have a medical check-up. Discuss your weight-loss plan with the doctor to get a green signal and decide whether you should supplement your diet with vitamins and mineral supplements. Next, you will want to get yourself a weighing scale and place it in a convenient spot. Put up a piece of paper next to the scale every month. The paper should have two columns – one for date and the other to record your weight. Apart from helping you keep track, it will give a real boost to your efforts when you see your weight going down. It may well be worth keeping in mind that dieting coupled with exercise is the best way to lose weight. Apart from burning calories, exercise helps keep the skin and muscles toned. food elements that your body needs. They lead to a tug-of-war between you and your willpower. The body actually requires a balanced amount of all the nutrients. Such diets are not very successful A GUIDELINE FOR THE RIGHT where weight reduction is concerned, because they create a craving for the wrong FOODS kinds of food. They can also undermine • Choose foods like skimmed milk, yogurt, your health, cause fatigue and pose new cottage cheese (paneer), leafy and other health problems. Your external appearance vegetables, chicken, fish, liver, whole may also suffer as beauty of skin and hair depends on a good diet. Instead of starving wheat, unpolished rice, sprouted cereals, yourself, it is a better idea to exercise as pulses, fresh fruit and vegetable juices well as eat meals that are low in calories and (unsweetened), lassi (unsweetened) and high in nutritional value. clear soups. • Reduce your intake of both red and lean EATING PATTERNS meats, eggs, pasta, rice, chapatis, potatoes, beetroot, bananas and peas. Use little oil while cooking. • Avoid high calorie products like butter, ghee, cream, rich desserts, cookies, chips, ice-creams, canned foods, processed cheese, fried foods and aerated drinks. It is a good idea to do an appraisal of your eating pattern and the kind of foods you eat. Find out if anxiety or stress drive you to your refrigerator or kitchen for a quick snack. It is a recognized fact that many people eat to relieve stress. You can either control this snacking urge, or eat foods with low calories like fruits, salads and sprouts. Also, remember that it is not only hunger but also appetite which influences our eating pattern. Most often, we eat mainly to satisfy our appetite. Contd. On Page 29 CRASH DIETS Going on a crash diet, or diet fads, is not recommended as they can cause deficiencies in one or more of the essential CityMasala www.citymasala.com 14 www.citymasala.com November 2007 plaintiffs. The personal wealth of LLC members may be left untouched. Asset Protection Planning means using federal and state laws to hold your savings, property, and businesses in a way that shields them from lawsuits, business risks, and claims from creditors of all types. FAMILY LIMITED PARTNERSHIPS (FLPs) Family Limited Partnership is a limited partnership that holds the family business or other assets and allows parents to make gifts of limited partnership interests to their children. Assets are originally transferred into the FLP in exchange for general shares and as General Partners, parents control shares and limited units of interest. Potential creditors and plaintiffs are discouraged with the many legal obstacles that can be created when trying to reach your assets. Basic asset protection tools like Family Limited Partnerships (FLPs) and Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) provide good asset protection against future lawsuits. They allow you to maintain control and can provide income and estate tax benefits in certain situations. Specifically, these tools will keep a creditor outside the structure through “charging order” protections. These protections typically allow a business owner to create enough of a hurdle against creditors to negotiate a favorable settlement. For these reasons, we often call FLPs and LLCs the “building blocks” of basic asset protection The general interests control the operation of the business. The limited interests represent fractional title without the ability to pledge, sell, transfer, or demand money. Land, stocks and other assets can be transferred to children tax efficiently and yet allow for parental management. Moreover, by preventing forced liquidation, the FLP enjoys substantial asset protection. This is done by limiting a creditor’s remedy to a charging order, giving them only those limited partner rights described above and still allowing parents to maintain control. TENANTS-BY-THE-ENTIRETY Owning property as tenants-by-the-entirety, or in accordance with Florida Homestead Law, may provide you with simple asset protection that you need to protect your home and bank accounts. INTERNATIONAL PLANNING International planning provides the strongest form of asset protection available. Simply stated, it utilizes laws, treatises and international procedures to ban a creditor from satisfying their judgment through the seizure and sale of your assets. The principal value of holding assets in non-US countries is that those countries do not recognize a verdict from a US court as having any validity in their legal system. Property in Florida may be owned by a married couple as tenants-by-the-entirety, where each spouse owns the entire estate and neither can deal with the property independently. The inability of the debtor-spouse to exercise independent control over the asset can completely frustrate the interest of a creditor. While we cannot stop lawsuits and litigation, we can prevent them from taking your wealth. Real estate, accounts receivable, equipment, and similar immovable assets can also be protected by a properly executed trust and limited liability company structure. There is no income tax savings associated with the execution and operation of a proper international asset protection trust structure. All income earned must be reported to the IRS regardless of the country of origin. LIMITATIONS Tenancy-by-the-entirety does have limitations. 1) 2) 3) It offers no protection where the creditor has the same claim over both husband and wife. Divorce or death converts tenancy-by-theentirety into a basic joint tenancy, thus exposing the asset to creditors of either spouse. Tenants-by-the-entirety can interfere with even the best estate tax reduction strategies. Also, this form of ownership is not acceptable for a home as it could potentially remove the homestead protection given to Florida residents by the Constitution of the State of Florida. THE BUILDING BLOCKS LIMITED LIABILITY COMPANIES (LLCs) Running any business involves serious lawsuit risks. The business may fail to pay its debts, its employees may have car accidents, customers may be injured on the business and disgruntled exemployees may sue for discrimination or sexual Outside protection of the LLC is as strong as the harassment. Protecting your personal wealth from corporations. If LLC formalities are followed, only these and other business risks is essential today. LLC assets will be exposed to its creditors and The LLC accomplishes this goal. CityMasala www.citymasala.com 16 In your asset protection plan, make sure you understand the cost and benefits of the various tools you employ. It will help you not only protect the wealth you have already built, but may assist you in building greater after tax wealth for your retirement and beyond. Many individuals are unaware of the intricacies of these tools, and should ALWAYS first consult with an experienced attorney. Please note that all facts above are general in nature and that all cases are unique. Before making a decision on any legal matter on your own, you are advised to consult with an attorney. This series has been a weird one as the off-field comments and some unsavory acts by Indian spectators have overshadowed some spectacular cricket by the Aussies, who have reaffirmed the fact that they are the best team in the world. The Aussies were smarting after the way they lost to India in the 20/20 competition and were definitely on a warpath when they got to India. Ricky Ponting and some others even made comments as to why all this monetary wealth was being showered upon the victorious team members. What is really funny in this whole period is the fact that the BCCI, in their infinite wisdom, scheduled a series against Australia a mere 5 days after the 20/20 World Cup. They were so sure that India would not qualify!!!! So much for believing in your team. www.citymasala.com The bowling is what must be a source of concern for the board. They just do not seem to be able to bowl a side out even after getting half the squad out, and even when they restrict the opposition in the first 40 overs, they give it away at the end. The opposition smashes the bowlers around for 8-10 runs/over in the last 10. Something has to be done about this because if one looks at the scores and the margin of defeat, it can be attributed to the runs given away in the last 10 overs. Lastly a little bit of trivia. The Indian squad was the only one in the 20/20 World Cup that did not specify a ‘favorite’ shot when the introductory bit was played for each player as they go out to bat! They won it all. It is a good thing for Indian cricket that the euphoria of winning a World Cup has been balanced out with a thrashing by a far superior team. I could understand if it were an entrant for cinematography, costumes, etc., but best film? As much as I love Aby Baby, this film was definitely lacking in the story arena. I was left scratching my head thinking, “That’s it? Where’s the rest?” Well, given that Big B doesn’t aspire to be recognized by the Oscars, it shouldn’t make much difference to him. Shah Rukh Khan proves his versatility yet again in the lead role and his impressive new and polished look is also worth a watch. The main highlight of the film is the song and dance sequence which sees the union of some of the biggest names in Bollywood. Reminiscent of the Amitabh Bachchan era in the early 80s in the hit film Naseeb, this sequence includes the likes of Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerjee, Preity Zinta, Shilpa Shetty, Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra. The musical score provided by Vishal -Shekhar is excellent with a mixture of soft ballads and tempo tracks such as Aankhon Mein Teri, Dard E Disco and Deewangi Deewangi being the most popular. They are very naughty and keep me running around in circles all day. I am a full time mother and ask my husband to help me out in the evenings but he just wants to play with them and doesn’t do anything to discipline them. They misbehave when my husband is home but he doesn’t care. He feels that children are innocent and should be allowed to do anything they want. They even hit and bite other people! Sometimes I feel like hitting them because they just don’t listen. I love my children very much and don’t like myself for losing patience. My kids also seem to love my husband more because I am always yelling at them. I just need some support from my husband. What do I do? Name withheld upon request. A: Surprise, Surprise! Do you think that your children may be trying to be your teacher? But, just think about it - is it not possible that you and your husband are both right? Your difference of opinions puts you at odds with each other and leads to a less harmonious home. You are absolutely correct in wanting to unify your opinions to take a consistent stand as united parents. their life experiences mold them. Usually in situations like yours, where the parents have two opposite views the children continue to ‘split’ the parents into all good or all bad. Home life becomes a constant game of power. As a result, the children do not see the purpose of rules and just focus their energy on how to get what they want. When parents can’t agree on how to manage children’s behaviors, children wind up getting mixed messages as the same behavior leads to a different consequence from each parent. This trains the child’s mind to behave selectively. They do not learn good self-control. Set up consequences that both of you agree on to address a particular problem behavior. When you see your child display the problem, give the same consequence. You will no longer be split up as a good and bad parent. You will shape your child’s ability to respect laws of harmonious living as they grow up. Q. My daughter is 13 years old and has a close friend whose parents are divorced. I have also talked about protecting her from potentially unsafe places but she thinks she has everything under control and doesn’t understand my fears. Shiela from Tampa, FL A: The words ‘potentially unsafe’ need to be addressed more carefully. Either your suspicions are correct and you are protecting your child or you are merely exercising your stereotypes and preventing your child from a joyful experience. Here are some ways in which you can address this: speak to your daughter about what your fears are. Tell your daughter that you want to figure out why you are worried and you want to prevent harm. Ask her to clear your queries. Get an idea of what interactions take place when the children are with this father. This will either validate or negate your fears. You should meet the father, ask specific questions, if you haven’t already done so. This will either validate your ‘gut feelings’ or discard them as unnecessary worry. Have a mature discussion with your teenage daughter about what you hear in the news and ensure that she is aware of how to protect herself. Your answer lies in confronting the situation bravely and smartly and not by avoiding the issue because you are in ‘fear’. Best of luck. From Page 26 If you’re in the market for a flat-panel television, then the choice cuts down to either plasma or LCD. So, here is a list of their advantages and disadvantages, in addition to some mentioned on page 26, which will help you make an informed decision about which to bring home. Pros Plasma TVs are based on phosphorescent screen technol- LCDs run cooler and often require less power to operate than Plasma ogy so their pictures resemble those of tube TVs in terms of brightness, color depth and shading, and picture clarity. They have an edge over LCDs on contrast ratio (often as high as 10,000:1), black levels, and reproducing subtle color shadings, particularly in dim scenes. Pixel response is very rapid, fastmoving and not blurry. They are generally more affordable in larger screen sizes over 50 inches. Viewers find that Plasma sets do a better job of scaling up lower-resolution standarddefinition TV signals. TVs. They uses a screen coating that reflects little ambient light and washouts aren’t a problem even under bright lighting conditions. There’s no chance of image burn-in. They are PC-compatible so the set can double as a computer monitor. With a few exceptions, LCD is your main choice for sets 40 inches and under. Most new under-40-inch plasmas come from off-brands that may be more of a gamble than sets from the major names. Cons Some plasmas consume more electricity and put out much more heat during use. At higher altitudes (above 6,500 feet), lower air pressure can cause the set to produce a buzzing noise similar to a neon sign. Plasmas (usually cheaper, low-quality models) are susceptible to burn-in from static images such as stock-ticket bars and video-game gauges. They are much heavier than LCDs, which can affect plans for wall mounting, and then can also be harder for one person to handle. Pixel response may be a tad slower than plasma, so fast-moving imagery might blur. New LCDs may have stuck pixels, which show up as bright pinpoints of light. A hard rap on the screen may break crystals and leave a permanent dark spot. True blacks can be difficult to reproduce because fluorescent backlight still shines through the pixel grid. After a few years of use, the aging backlight may shift color a little, forcing the user to recalibrate the set. She likes to help them out, but at times it sucks out all the energy she has. This time it has made her angry too. She has no time or space to tell you what’s been happening with her - she needs to donate all the space and energy to help these two lost souls … Q: Dear Auntyji – I am writing to you because I have no one else I can talk to about my problem. Even though I find your advice a little over the top, there seems to be a basic common sense approach in your attitude and I am hoping that you can help me. I have recently discovered that my sister is interested in coming to the US. She is single and very attractive. She wants to come here so that she can get married and settle down here. My concern is that my husband has quite the roving eye. I have actually caught him having an affair with someone but decided to stay on in the marriage because of our children. It has been 6 years since this incident. I completely trust my sister but know how persuasive and charming my husband can be. Should I let my sister come here or should I discourage her? If I do discourage her from coming here, how do I still maintain a good relationship with her without telling her the truth? I am in a real dilemma and would welcome any help that you can provide in this matter. Concerned Sister, Casselberry, FL. A: Auntyji would not really call you a concerned sister but more of a selfish and misguided one. At times her advice has to be “over the top” so that it can get across to people like you who have a totally distorted opinion about themselves. Maybe that is one of the reasons why you have no one else to confide in and have had to turn to Auntyji! Auntyji feels this is excellent because maybe she is the only person in this world who can put some sense into you as well as straighten you out a little. The problem is not your sister but the lack of trust in your marriage. Your husband is equally to blame here and both of you are helping to make a bad marriage worse. What is the truth that you want to tell your sister? • That you are unwilling to help her because you do not trust your husband and that they might have an affair? What you need is not a conversation with your sister, but with your husband. If you think he is going to have an affair, it could be with anyone. Do not punish your sister and yourself. If she does move here, she may turn out to be a very supportive person whom you seem to need in your life. Discuss the issues of trust that exist in your relationship with your husband. If things are so bad that you cannot even trust him with your sister, you might want to think about moving on with your life without him. Trust me, your children are not benefiting because you have decided to stay on in this marriage - you are probably causing more harm than good here. Welcome your sister into your home and your life. Maybe then you will find someone you can confide in. Q: Dear Auntyji– I am a married man and am very much in love with my wife. Maybe with that extra effort she might get pregnant. However, along with the heartbreak she faces every month, you will then be adding on more heartbreak if she still isn’t able to conceive. She is probably getting older which will complicate things further. Your wife could go through an artificial method of reproduction, go through the pains of labor, and bring a baby into this world. There could be risks and complications and, of course, the trauma of knowing that there was a male donor (not you) involved. This would again not be your biological child. But at least you will have a child, even though it might take months or years. You could adopt and give a needy child an opportunity that they otherwise might not have. There are thousands of babies and children out there who desperately need a good home. You could provide a loving home to one (or more) of them. The gratification would be more immediate. You could even get to choose the sex, the race, the age, and some other characteristics of the child if you so desire. Rather than facing heartbreak every month you could share a smile every moment. In the end the choice is yours. Having a child is more than just giving birth to one that might carry your own DNA. The conception takes just moments. The birth takes months and the rearing of a child takes years. The joy of having a child lasts a lifetime. There is a message for you here. You can ignore it if you want. The miracles of modern science might be able to help you to a certain extent, but is your need so strong that you want to go against all that you see in front of you? Auntyji has now said her piece. BOOK REVIEW Bolo! Bolo! Anthology Edited By: The Kitchen Table Collective. By: Sheniz Janmohamed Bolo! Bolo! A Collection of Writings by second generation Asians living in North America is a valiant attempt to showcase the literary talents of young South Asians in North America. An anthology of various genres, including short story and poetry, Bolo! Bolo! has something that will interest everyone. However, some of the pieces are stronger than others. The first piece in the collection is a poetic piece by Mohammad Khan, entitled Consciousness. This poem is fascinating in the manner it has been formatted. There is an innate musicality to his poem, and he admits that he tried to “emulate the rhythmic complexity of a tabla piece”. Khan’s poem is unrelenting in its content, exploring the difficulties second generations face when they are exposed to cultural homogenization, “east is east and west is west and never the twain shall meet, sense my situation/sense, my ancient body burns/ I learn to bend and turn in self-defense/self- preservation/ cultural invasion/ ethnic mastication/ race-andnation separation/ face it, nothing sates this age of information” When reading this piece, it is almost impossible not to hear Khan’s voice belt- CityMasala www.citymasala.com ing it out to tabla beats. Another lovely aspect of the collection is the introduction of the non-fiction genre, specifically personal essays written by anonymous individuals about pressing issues in the south Asian community. The topics range from being awkward south Asian teens to memories of family and ‘home’. Jyoti Seghal’s piece, Seeking an Identity, provides fascinating arguments about south Asian female identity in the North American context. 32 As a teacher, she witnesses the complex relationships that exist between her south Asian female students and their non-south Asian peers. She also speaks of her own experience growing up as a visible minority, “There was nothing to counter my feelings of inferiority at school…I also couldn’t completely ignore it, for I was ‘visible’. I was so ‘visible’, I tried applying talcum powder to lighten my skin.” The Kitchen Table Collective, who edited and compiled the collection, had a clear goal in mind. The goal was to find young, socially/ politically/culturally conscious second generationers and give them the opportunity to speak their minds. The result is varied - some fiction pieces are didactic in nature, others are a perfect blend of creative storytelling and political gravity. However, for a first attempt, Bolo! Bolo! is brimming with fascinating insights and perspectives.
