Welcome!! Welcome!!
The Holiday Season is upon us and pages 15-18 have all of the burnside
offered titles. As always, we wish a great December to you with no
returns. Stuff those stockings!!
But before those holidays, we have Thanksgiving and the day after--Black Friday. This year we have two very limited vinyl titles available
from the Voodoo Doughnut Recordings folks---Portland legends both,
Dead Moon and Crackerbash. And nice to note the Harmonic
Convergence of (burnside distributed Saustex Records artists) Hickoids
performing at the Grand Opening of the Austin retail outlet of Voodoo
Doughnuts on Halloween.
Terry Adams is in his 6th decade of making music going way back to
NRBQs eponymous ’67 release. Along the way, he’s had some solo
ventures and collaborations expanding his genre-spanning oeuvre. This
time it's his love of the compositions of Thelonious Sphere Monk
which manifests itself on a brilliant recording from a two night
performance backed by past and present members of the Q and the
Whole Wheat Horns. Not a vocal to be heard, but so very well done.

This month we also offer up reissues on Vinyl of the first three albums
by The Ocean Blue. And we have a brand new album of reggae tunes
by renowned Nuevo-Flamenco guitarist Ottmar Liebert. There is also
a new CD and LP release by Matt Bauer who was recently featured on
Prairie Home Companion. And we welcome the Jazz Legacy
Productions label to the burnside fold---see pages 7-9.
Finally we’d like to make you aware of a new double LP releasing in early
December featuring a number of latter year recordings of Tangerine
Dream compiled by the widow of founder Edgar Froese who passed
away earlier this year. Each numbered copy of the limited quantity
double album set is on tangerine colored vinyl.

This album is in memory of Edgar Froese, the leader of Tangerine Dream, indispensible pioneers of
experimental electronic music and space rock who sold more records than any other German band in
history. They recorded more than one hundred studio albums anda similar number of movie soundtracks.
Founder and leader of the band Edgar Froese passed away in Vienna on January 20, 2015. Out Of This
World is a compilation put together by his widow, Bianca Froese- Acquaye, and features the music from
the band's later work that meant the most to her. Invisible Hands Music are proud to honor the memory of
this titan of music. This 140 gram double gatefold LP is pressed on tangerine vinyl and limited to 5000
numbered copies.

Dream's End is set in a landscape of barrier islands, mangroves, and southern maritime forests populated
by fantastical creatures and sentient, shapeshifting pillars of smoke, Matt Bauer has imagined a fantasy

rhythmic than previous records, Dream's End builds on Bauer's previous orchestral folk arrangements of

Terry Adams, Talk Thelonious
NRBQ founder Terry Adams pays tribute to his favorite pianist/composer on this new CD, Talk
Thelonious. Adams says it's been a lifetime in the making. “I finally realized it was something I was
supposed to do." The music on Talk Thelonious is physical and cerebral, simple and complex, and full of
pleasant surprises. The album features all the members of NRBQ and the Whole Wheat Horns with an
added guest. Both Adams’ arrangements and the performances stay true to the genius of Thelonious
Monk while still going to some new and exciting places. Highlights include a rollicking “Hornin’ In”; an

Monty Alexander, Uplift 2
Jamaica is known for the undulating sounds of reggae, but it also contributed mightily to the jazz
continuum. Dizzy Reese, Ernest Ranglin, and Harry Beckett are from Jamaica, but perhaps the island’s
best-known jazz export is Monty Alexander, a pianist that’s been enthralling jazz fans for decades.
Alexander’s 2011 album Uplift topped the JazzWeek chart twice that year—and when JazzWeek charted
the most-played CDs of the year, Uplift was #5. Between that CD and Harlem-Kingston Express Live,

Antonio Hart, Blessings
“I’m something of a dinosaur,” Antonio Hart says with playful irony. “I’m among the last of my generation
to directly learn from the [original] masters—Jimmy Heath (still active, bless him), Art Blakey, James
Moody, and Dizzy Gillespie. Like Master Gillespie said, I’ve one foot in the past and one in the present.”
While Blessings’ sax/organ/guitar/drums line- up evokes the classic, blues/R&B-inspired soul jazz combos
of the 1960s and ‘70s, this set is an homage to a classic era but not a tribute. “Tributes” can be too
reverential sometimes, whereas Blessings finds Hart absorbing aspects of that tradition to create an
album that’s classic in its own right, as opposed to recreating what was done before (not that there’s
anything wrong with that).

Anonymous Choir, Sings Leonard Cohen
In 2011, Anonymous Choir emerged as a wintertime project led by singer/songwriter Nona Marie Invie.
The Choir gave Invie, and close friends, a way to purge the winter blues, while strengthening their creative
bonds. As a result the project continued to evolve and now Anonymous Choir has performed for both
local and national venues, including providing original live choral scores for film festivals and dance
performances, The choir is comprised of an array of women who enjoy singing and experimenting vocally,
and come from varying vocal experiences. They kneel at the altars of such luminaries as Kate Bush, Neil

Crackerbash, Live at the X-Ray Cafe
Voodoo Doughnut Recordings presents the second installment in Tales from the Grease Trap, the label's
series of archival recordings from Portland clubs in the early 1990s. Crackerbash, featuring Sean
Croghan on guitar and vocals, Scott Fox on bass and Teddy Miller on drums, were one of the definitive
bands from the homegrown Portland grunge scene. This recording, from June 6, 1993 at the legendary XRay Cafe, exhibits Crackerbash's huge dynamics as they move from hard- charging rockers to ballads and
back again. Croghan's singular on-stage presence comes across in his vocal roars and searing guitar
work. Mixed and mastered by Don Fury from the original 8-track recording. Take a trip back in time.

Dead Moon, 'Black September / Fire In The Western World' 7" single
Two more tracks from Dead Moon's infamous April 16, 1993 set at the Portland, Oregon club Satyricon.
Dead Moon--featuring husband-and-wife pair Fred and Toody Cole on guitar and vocals and bass and
vocals, respectively, with Andrew Loomis on drums--created a sound all their own by blending punk rock,
garage rock and country. Their sound is primal and raw and, on this particular performance, hardcharging and ferocious. Toody Cole called the resulting audio a "perfect storm" of performance, source
recordings and post-production. Both tracks were mixed and mastered from the original 8- track
recording by legendary punk and hardcore producer Don Fury. Together with the LP Live at Satyricon, this
represents all of the available audio from an unforgettable night of Dead Moon making underground rock
'n' roll history.

Western Star, Fireball
Fireball is the debut album by Baltimore-based quartet Western Star. These hard working and touring
young men cite their musical inspiration as coming from three main sources: Thin Lizzy, The Pixies and the
Old 97’s. The album was produced by Old 97‘s lead guitarist Ken Bethea and is chock full of radio

Tom Dyer, Xmas-30 Years In The Making
Tom Dyer's seventh record since 2009 is an eclectic dose of rocking Christmas fun. Xmas-30 Years In The
Making features the popular "No Lou This Xmas" inspired by the late, great Lou Reed. Written and
released one week before Christmas 2013, it was this final brick Dyer needed for this album, recorded
sporadically since 1983. Tom Dyer is a Seattle guy with an inconsistent musical predilection, the King of
Stylistic Variation, which is in full force here. We've got a choral number, the rocking Lou Reed tribute, a
guitar instrumental, a torch song, a little swing sextet, folky-protest, ska, a sea chanty, some bad country,
many guitar solos, plus a nice selection of minor Pacific NW music deities, with Gary Minkler from Red
Dress, the Green Pajamas' Jeff Kelly and many more. Despite seeming like an unholy mess on paper, it
hangs together into a pleasing, (mostly) non-secular holiday adventure.

acoustic guitar recording, Midnight Clear, a collection of twelve holiday classics. Marshall, one of the
