2009-10 Preview
Overview
2
The up-and-coming Lenoir-Rhyne
University Women’s Basketball Team
finally served notice last year with its
record-breaking campaign.
In 2008-09, the Bears rolled to the
South Atlantic Conference Regular
Season and Tournament Championships
in addition to hosting the NCAA Division
II Southeast Regional Tournament as the
top seed.
It’s hard to improve on a 27-5 record
(13-3 in league play) but Lenoir-Rhyne
has the pieces to do so. Lenoir-Rhyne
has an unusual amount of talent and
experience returning including all five
starters and their top 10 scorers from a
season ago.
The Bears are ranked No. 22 in NCAA
Division II Bulletin National Preseason
Top 25 Poll and primed for another
run under fifth-year Head Coach Todd
Starkey.
For his team’s accomplishments,
Starkey was named the 2008-09
RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA NCAA Division
II National Coach of the Year.
Frontcourt
One of the big reasons for last year’s
success was the return of Denise
Moore (Newport News, Va.). The senior
center sat out the 2007-08 campaign
with a knee injury but bounced back
to earn All-SAC Second-Team honors
for the second time in her career after
averaging a team-high 13.6 points and
7.1 rebounds per game. Moore was also
named the Food Lion SAC Tournament
MVP in 2009 and will once again give L-R
an edge inside.
Seniors Jacquelyn Kremer
(Sevierville, Tenn.) and Kristen Fulmer
(Bradenton, Fla.) are strong compliments
to Moore on the inside. Both players
have proven to be valuable assets not
only starting but coming off the bench.
The Bears are also excited about the
arrival of freshman forwards Precious
Elkins (Conyers, Ga.) and Gina
Simmons
(Kernersville, N.C.).
Backcourt
Although L-R is more guard-heavy, the
inside play is extremely important and
will be key to the Bears’ success.
Speaking of guards, Lenoir-Rhyne’s
stable can match up with anyone.
Senior guard Amber Holt (Charlotte,
N.C.), a three-time All-SAC First-Team
honoree, looks to finish her L-R career in
fine fashion. One of the league’s most
prolific scorers, Holt finished second in
points last year (12.8 ppg) while leading
the squad in three-pointers made (42)
and assists (125). Holt’s scoring may
be down, but it’s due more to a better
supporting cast and more options for the
team.
The arrival of senior guard Brittany
Mitch (McLean, Va.) just before the
break last year may have been the final
piece of the puzzle. Mitch, a tall, athletic
guard (6-2) who has already graduated
from Duke, averaged 11.2 points per
outing last season on her way to secondteam all-league accolades. Mitch gives
L-R a scoring threat from behind the
three-point line.
Despite the array of talent already
mentioned, the ball still goes through
senior guard Jami Safrit (Newton,
N.C.). Safrit, one of the league’s and
region’s best all-around players, shows
her versatility with the numbers she
posts. Safrit averaged 9.4 points and 6.2
rebounds per game despite standing only
5-4. Safrit also dished out four assists
per game and shot 82 percent from the
free throw line. Her presence on the
court is immeasurable.
Roster Breakdown
Eight Seniors
Leslie Conetta (Guard, 5-7)
Kristen Fulmer (Forward, 6-0)

Meredith Webster (Guard, 5-4)

Cameron Sealey (Guard, 5-7)
Three Freshman
Precious Elkins (Forward, 6-0)
Gina Simmons (Guard, 6-0)
Taylor Ricketts (Guard, 5-4)
L-R’s depth in the backcourt goes even
further with sophomore guard Whitley
Culler (Mount Airy, N.C.) and senior
guard Meredith Webster (High Point,
N.C.). Culler (5.9 ppg) was one of the
top newcomers last year and played
extremely well down the stretch while
Webster is one of L-R’s best three-point
shooters.
Senior guard Leslie Conetta
(Sarasota, Fla.) gives L-R another option
with her experience and knowledge of
the system. Freshman guard Taylor
Ricketts (Gainesville, Ga.) should figure
in the mix as well.
Above (from left to right): L-R Head Coach Todd Starkey, Amber Holt and Denise Moore celebrate the Bears’
2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament
Championship.
The Bears do have a long list of
veteran guards that provide depth and
each brings its own unique talent to the
table.
Junior guard LaCourtney Rann
(Charlotte, N.C.) provides immediate
scoring while sophomore guard
Cameron Sealey (Gastonia, N.C.) is
the perfect complement to Safrit. Sealey
had a strong first year with L-R in 200809, averaging 8.1 points per contest
while starting in 31 of 32 games.

Starkey was rewarded for his team’s
banner year by being named South
Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year

During Starkey’s tenure, L-R has

Starkey also coached three players
to SAC All-Freshman Team selections:
Jami Safrit (2006-07), LaCourtney Rann

Todd Starkey is beginning his fifth
season as Head Women’s Basketball
Coach at Lenoir-Rhyne University. Starkey became the 10th head coach
in L-R Women’s Basketball history when
his was hired in August of 2005.
Last season, Starkey began the year
with a career head coaching record
of 41 wins and 43 losses. But that
all changed with the Bears’ success
in 2008-09 as Starkey guided the L-R
Women’s Basketball Team to a storied
season. The Bears won 27 games compared
to just five losses en route to the
best season ever in NCAA Division II
04 SAC Regular Season Championship
and its subsequent berth in the NCAA
Division II Playoffs.
Starkey came to L-R in 2003 after
coaching five seasons as an Assistant
for the Men’s Basketball Team at
Montreat College (1998-03) where he
helped the Cavaliers earn a berth in
the NAIA National Tournament during
the 1999-00 season. That same year,
Montreat improved its win total from
seven to 22 games, the second-best
improvement in the nation at any level.
Starkey graduated from Montreat
in 1993 after playing one year of
basketball for the Cavaliers. Prior to his
time at Montreat, Starkey played one
year at Mars Hill.

Player Profiles
Amber Holt has been an offensive anchor for L-R in u
her three years with the program. Holt is an excellent shooter and a constant threat to drive and score,
which gives her regular opportunities to find open
shooters. Along with her scoring and passing ability,
she has been a leader. Holt must play a vital role if
the Bears are to be successful in the upcoming year.
t Brittany Mitch earned her degree from Duke and joins
senior Denise Moore (Rider University) as one of two
Division I transfers on the L-R roster. At 6-2, Mitch
has an uncharacteristic skill set. She is an adept ballhandler and a sound shooter. Her outstanding reach
gives her a presence on the offensive glass and on
defense. She led the team with 50 steals last year.

t Jami Safrit is the primary point guard in
running Coach Starkey’s offensive sets.
Constantly active on both ends of the floor,
the 5-4 senior does more for L-R than the
statistics will ever indicate. Safrit is agressive
and unrelenting. Her ability to manage and
motivate the Bears in their half-courts sets will
be an integral part of L-R’s success this year.
LaCourtney Rann gives Coach Starkey another u
scoring option, another viable point guard
and a different look in the backcourt. Rann
was named to the 2007-08 SAC All-Freshman
Team. She is lightning quick and can start
when called upon. She also presents a threat
from beyond the arc.

Player Profiles
Kristen Fulmer has shown drastic improvu
ment each of her three seasons at L-R.
She is a solid inside presence for the Bears
and proved last year that she could be
consistent from the charity stripe. In the
upcoming season, the versatile forward will
again provide depth for the Bears.
t Jacquelyn Kremer is a valuable performer
at the low block for the Bears. Kremer is
physical and strong. Her rebounding ability and finishing touch will make her an asset any time she is on the floor in the coming
season. As a senior, she will also provide
valuable leadership to some of the younger
players this year.

2008-09 SAC Review
The South Atlantic
Conference
The South Atlantic Conference is a group of
nine church-related colleges of similar size and
athletic philosophy. Entering its 21st year as
all-sports confererence and 17th as a member
of NCAA Division II, the league continues to
grow as one of the premier small-college
athletic conferences in the nation.
The SAC has made great strides since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason
play in July 1993.
The league was founded in 1975 as a
football-only conference. Kurt Brennerman,
of Greensboro, N.C., won a contest to name
the league, being the first to submit the SAC-8
name. The conference held the SAC-8 moniker
until 1989, and evolved into what is the South
Atlantic Conference today.
Leading the South Atlantic Conference as
commissioner is Patrick Britz, who was hired in
May of 2008 as the successor to Doug Echols,
the league’s first full-time commissioner who
retired after 19 years of service.

The Champions
1976-77
In only the second year of competition in the modern era
of women’s basketball at L-R, the Lady Bears won the North
Carolina Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women
(NCAIAW) Division III State Championship. L-R beat Pembroke
State (76-55), Winston-Salem State (85-75) and then North
Carolina A&T (70-59) for the title.
The 2003-04 Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Basketball Team won its first
South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Title in school history
and finished the year 17-11 overall and 11-3 in league play.

Lenoir-Rhyne won the NCAIAW Division II state championship
for the second time defeating Pfeiffer (77-64), UNC Charlotte
(78-71) and High Point (89-76) in the state tournament. L-R next
played in the AIAW (Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for
Women) Region II tournament in Radford, Va., beating Virginia
Commonwealth (95-75) in the first round, losing to the College
of Charleston, 75-70, in the semifinals and then taking third with
a 92-88 win over Carson-Newman. Lenoir-Rhyne received an
at-large berth to the AIAW National Tournament and advanced to
the quarterfinals despite having to play three games on the road.
L-R defeated Southeastern Oklahoma State (80-63), St. John
Fisher of New York (79-65), before losing to Louisiana College
(62-61).
1980-81
The 1980-81 season was Lenoir-Rhyne’s most successful in
women’s basketball. The Lady Bears went to the AIAW Division
II Final Four in Dayton, Ohio. L-R hosted and won the state
tournament beating North Carolina A&T (55-53), UNC Charlotte
(85-77) and High Point (75-69). Lenoir-Rhyne then moved
to the AIAW Region II tournament, also played in Shuford
Gym, winning the regional championship with victories over
Campbellsville (Ky.) (84-54), South Carolina State (75-72 OT),
and College of Charleston (75-66). L-R earned a spot in the
AIAW national tournament for the second consecutive year, and
hosted the first two rounds of the event. L-R faced Biola (Calif.),
a former national No. 1, and coasted to the 83-59 win. The Lady
Bears then whipped Abilene Christian, 88-75, to earn the trip to
the Final Four. In the national semifinal, L-R was knocked off by
eventual champion William Penn (Iowa), 71-46. The Lady Bears
finished the year fourth, losing to Cal Poly-Pomona, 85-65, in the
third-place game.
1981-82
The Lady Bears entered the NCAIAW Division II tournament
in Wilmington seeded fourth, but still rolled to their third
straight title. Lenoir-Rhyne whipped Western Carolina 97-74 in
the opener and crushed UNC-Wilmington 87-56 after a 34-34
halftime tie. In the state finals, L-R rallied from five points down
at halftime to defeat North Carolina A&T 75-69. The Lady Bears
advanced to the AIAW Region II tournament in Charleston, S.C.,
but lost a heartbreaker to Campbell, 76-75.
t
The 2002-03 Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Basketball Team won
the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament and
earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
2002-03
The Bears had one of their most memorable seasons
in program history as they won the 2003 Food Lion SAC
Tournament and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
L-R overcame a disastrous mid-season slump to enter the
tournament as the No. 3 seed. From there, L-R knocked off
Presbyterian (96-87 in overtime, the famous “Four in Four”),
Carson-Newman (83-71) and Catawba, 73-71, in the finals. At
the NCAA Division II playoffs in Salisbury, N.C., the Bears battled
tough for a a half becore succumbing to No. 8 Shaw, 89-69.

Historical Highlights
2003-04
Lenoir-Rhyne saw the arrival of Crystal Clary, a transfer from
Campbell, and the junior center spearheaded the Bears to its
first-ever South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Title. Clary
was named a First-Team NCAA Division II All-American and
produced one of the best seasons by a Bear in school history.
L-R shared the SAC Regular Season Title with Catawba and
Wingate.
2008-09
Coming off of back-to-back winning seasons under Head
Coach Todd Starkey, Lenoir-Rhyne’s 2008-09 campaign proved to
be the best since entering the NCAA. The Bears won 27 games
for the first time since 1980-81, marking just the fourth time L-R
won 20-plus games in a season. The team also posted an .841
winning percentage, second-best all-time. L-R shared the South
Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship with Tusculum
College. The Bears would then knock off Tusculum to win the
2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament Title. The
win marked the first time in program history L-R captured both
the SAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships in the
same year. That was enough to land the Lenoir-Rhyne the No. 1
seed in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament. As
host and top seed, L-R knocked off No. 8 Anderson, 69-58, but
would fall in the second round to No. 2 Francis Marion, 93-74.
Head Coach Todd Starkey was recognized as National Coach of
the Year by the WBCA.

Neill McGeachy
Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
27
Under the dynamic leadership of Neill
McGeachy over the past seven and one-half
years, the intercollegiate athletics program
at Lenoir-Rhyne has enjoyed tremendous
growth and new energy. He is foremost
known for his creative promotions and
marketing expertise; however, the skills he
brings to L-R and intercollegiate athletics are
much broader.
He adroitly serves in a unique blending
of two roles, as Director of Intercollegiate
Athletics and as Executive Director of the
Piedmont Educational Foundation/Bears
Club, the official fundraising arm of the L-R
Department of Athletics.
According to McGeachy, “We celebrate the
athletic history of Lenoir-Rhyne, we compete
in today and we look to the future.”
His involvement of all constituents
– students, alumni, corporate, Hickory
metro community, public school systems,
emergency services, civic organizations,
YMCA, Catawba Valley Medical Center
and Frye Regional Medical Center – in
a collaborative effort with athletics
has enhanced L-R’s overall growth and
retention efforts. In the process, new
streams of revenue have been identified
and introduced. They include: expanded
radio broadcast sponsorships, Affinity and
Corporate partnerships, the PEF Bears Club
Gala, and the Lenoir-Rhyne/Moretz Sports
Championship Series.
In his first year in 2002, he was
instrumental in helping increase football
season attendance two-fold (13,958 to
28,625) which led the NCAA Division II
nationally in percentage of improvement that
year. In addition, Lenoir-Rhyne has led the
South Atlantic Conference the last six years
in attendance
Since his arrival and his decision to
return to night football games, a pre-game
festival environment has included sponsored
corporate tents, university or community
recognition events, entertainment groups,
visiting marching bands, mystical bonfires,
pep rallies and bagpipes.
This past fall, his negotiating skills initiated
athletic experiences with two prominent No.
1 nationally-ranked powerhouses.
In September, the Bears played
Appalachian State University, a 76-year rival,
for the first time since 1982. Sixty-one days
later, L-R played the University of North
Carolina in basketball for the first time since
1949. Both schools were ranked No. 1 in
the country at the time of their meeting. A
combined 47,159 fans witnessed these two
special contests.
Lenoir-Rhyne University also visited
the University of Texas in Austin for three
straight years from 2004 to 2006 and will
return in the fall of 2008.
Examples of literal metaphors that his
vision has inspired include additions of The
Front Porch and The Charge (12-foot, 2,100pound bronze bear icon).
In his first six years, five sports have been
added to Lenoir-Rhyne University athletics
– women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track
and field, women’s swimming and men’s
tennis – bringing the total current number
to 17 sports. Soon he plans to raise it to
20 sports by adding men’s and women’s
lacrosse in 2009-10 and men’s swimming in
2010-11. This strategy is a concerted effort
to continue to offer attractive opportunities
– both academic and athletic – that will grow
the university’s enrollment base.
He has utilized his sports and coaching
background to finesse the operations of
these team sports by hiring gifted and
quality coaches, developing team marketing
opportunities, and providing academic
tutoring for student athletes.
With rapid expansion in the number of
student-athletes (a 44% increase over a fiveyear period), he has been instrumental in
the establishment of a master land plan for
athletics. New features accomplished this
year are the addition of the Moretz Sports
- Athletic Complex including soccer field,
the Irwin Belk Track, softball and baseball
lighting along with new scoreboards.
Assisted by his dedicated and talented
staff, all this activity has made a dramatic
impact. Recent successes include Men’s
soccer team finished with a record 19-1-1
and a final ranking of No. 5 in the nation
while winning the conference tournament,
the third title in school history. Women’s
softball, averaging 48 wins a season, has
succeeded in winning the South Atlantic
Conference Regular Season Championship
for three straight years and participated in
the NCAA regionals for the fourth time since
2002. The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team won
a school record 35 games in 2007.
Men’s basketball won league titles in
2002-03, 2003-04, 2005-06 and 2007-

08 and made three trips to the NCAA
Division II Playoffs as well (2003, 2004
and 2008). Women’s basketball was the
SAC regular season champions in 2003-04
and tournament champions in 2003. The
volleyball team captured its second league
title in three years in 2006 and advanced
to the SAC tournament finals. Men’s cross
country finished second in the conference
four straight years (2003-06) while the
women’s cross country placed second in the
league this past fall and had a runner qualify
for nationals. Women’s golf captured league
titles in 2003 and 2004. Men’s golf tied for
third in the SAC tournament last year after
winning it in 2006.

Lenoir-Rhyne University Women’s Basketball
Piedmont Educational Foundation
Dedicated To Excellence In Academics And Athletics
The Team Behind The Teams
Lenoir-Rhyne University is only one of
a handful of schools in NCAA Division II
that offers such a diverse intercollegiate
athletic program providing 17 sports.
Great pride is taken in how things are
done at Lenoir-Rhyne. There is only one
way--the right way. L-R’s student-athletes
have learned to appreciate the strength
of discipline, the wisdom of teamwork
and the tenacious pursuit of excellence.
Lenoir-Rhyne’s strong committment
toward athletics and academics provides
our student-athletes with tools and
resources necessary to be successful
througout their lives.
With this in mind, Lenoir-Rhyne
University and its athletic fundraising arm,
the Piedmont Educational Foundation/
Bears Club, are committed to enhancing
the educational experiences and
opportunities for our student-athletes.
The Piedmont Educational Foundation/
Bears Club was chartered on December
12, 1946, for the purpose of providing
30
scholarship aid to worthy young men and
women who otherwise might not have the
advantage of a college education. Now,
with over 600 members throughout the
United States, the Piedmont Educational
Foundation has provided over two million
dollars in aid to Lenoir-Rhyne. With
your support we are able to develop a
competitive athletic program as we work
to build championship people, both on
and off the playing field.
Friends, alumni, parents and
companies-anyone can join the Piedmont
Educational Foundation/Bears Club with
a contribution. Our giving levels and
benefits start at $150 dollars and graduate
to a named scholarship giving level of
$5,000. When you join the PEF/Bears
Club, you are investing in a brighter future
for many of the Lenoir-Rhyne’s studentathletes. Call the Piedmont Educational
Foundation/Bears Club office at (828)
328-7130 to join today or via e-mail at
[email protected].
Why Such An Organization Is Needed
Even though some intercollegiate
sports are income producing, others
provide no income. However, all sports
do attract students to the school and,
in so doing, contribute greatly to the
overall well-being of Lenoir-Rhyne
University.
Without the financial assistance of
the Piedmont Educational Foundation/
Bears Club, the financial burden of
maintaining a competitive athletic
program would fall to L-R’s already
pressed general fund. Gifts from alumni
and friends are absolutely necessary for
the athletic program to operate.
The Piedmont Educational
Foundation/Bears Club provides a tax
deductible vehicle through which these
gifts may be matched.
All gifts are receipted and
acknowledged by Lenoir-Rhyne
University and the Piedmont
Educational Foundation/Bears Club. We
recognize that a number of our donors
contribute to both academics and
athletic programs of Lenoir-Rhyne.
Therefore, your entire contribution
to the school will be gratefully
acknowledged (in total) in LenoirRhyne’s annual report.

The Piedmont Educational
Foundation is selling, as a fundraiser
for athletic scholarships, replicas
of the campus statue entitled “The
Charge.” Anyone purchasing this
statue will have their name placed in
perpetuity on the site of the campus
bear at the conclusion of the fundraiser.
This is a great gift idea for any
alumnus or friend of L-R. Part of the
$1,500.00 cost of the statue may be tax
deductible. Please call Cindy Moser at
(828) 328-7130 or email her at moserc@
