USI GUIDE
Welcome to the
University of
Southern Indiana
Welcome to the University of Southern Indiana
as the parent of a new USI student!
The Parent and Family Guide is designed to
help you learn about the University and helpful
resources across our campus. We appreciate
the trust you have placed in us by sending your
son or daughter to USI. Our faculty and staff
are dedicated to student success and will be
diligent in assuring your student has a rewarding
college experience. I look forward to celebrating
with you when your student graduates from the
University of Southern Indiana. In the meantime,
I hope to see you on campus as you support
your student’s college work and participate
in campus activities. You are now a member
of the USI family, and we welcome you!

are designed to assist parents and
students with the transition to college.
Some additional benefits of supporting
the Parents and Families Association
include a free subscription to the USI

USI GUIDE
USI GUIDE
Help your student deal with life
changes by shifting responsibility
back to him or her.
For example, give your student a budget,
and have him or her maintain its accuracy.
Let go.
Letting go doesn’t mean that you
shouldn’t be involved in your student’s
life; it simply means that it’s your student’s
turn to make decisions, and he or she
is capable of making positive ones.
Enable your student to be whatever.
You may have certain goals in mind, but
try to let your student discover his or her
own dreams. Your student will probably
pursue goals with a lot more vigor if he
or she is responsible for creating them.
Parenting a College
Student 101
You’ve helped your student make decisions for 18 years.
Now, it’s time to embrace your new role as coach. While at
college, your son or daughter will experiment with his or
her values, develop and redevelop dreams, change majors,
and maybe even change hair color! Your student will face
many challenges, but they are challenges that your student
is prepared to tackle. We have several recommendations on
how you can support your student as a parent-coach.
Understand your student’s
changes and uncertainties.
As your student explores, he or she
may have questions. Try to be patient
and listen to your student’s concerns.
Trust that you taught your student
to make sound decisions.
As hard as it will be, help your student
be independent. When problems
arise, empower him or her to figure
out and implement a solution.
Sharpen your listening skills.
Sometimes your student may just
want to vent. Learn to determine
when they are looking for advice
and when they need a kind ear.
10
Learn to operate in a “well.”
The “well” is where you can go to
retrieve questions and help your
student understand what’s going on.
For example, when your student calls
and says that he or she has to move out
of the residence hall room because a
roommate is too weird, you can answer,
“Well, that does sound odd, but have
you talked to your resident assistant?
Perhaps there is another alternative.”
Elevate Excellence
with the USI Foundation
The USI Foundation accepts and manages gifts
from alumni, friends, and organizations that
benefit diverse and deserving USI students.
In April 2013 the USI Foundation launched Campaign USI: Elevating
Excellence, a $50 million capital campaign, which aims to build
scholarship endowments, broaden student experiential learning,
and endow faculty professorships, among other components.
In 2012-13, the USI Foundation provided over $1.7 million
in scholarships to USI students. These scholarships are
made possible by generous donors and allow our students
to achieve their academic goals and so much more.
Joining the Parents and Families Association is a wonderful
way to become involved. You can make a gift any time and
your student can contribute to the new Student Fund to begin
his or her legacy of support of USI’s students and programs.
For more information, please visit our website at www.usi.
edu/giving and follow us on Facebook (University of Southern
Indiana Foundation) and Twitter (@USI_Foundation).
Understand your student’s
strengths and weaknesses.
As much as you hate to admit it, your
student is not perfect. Help your
student identify his or her strengths
and weaknesses and when to
capitalize on his or her best assets.

USI GUIDE
Parents may access a
student’s education
record at USI under the
following circumstances:
• The student completes a
“Permission to Release
Education Record
Information” form in the
Office of the Registrar.
This form entitles a
parent or authorized
person named by
the student to obtain
specific information
upon written request
and proof of identity.
The student may rescind
this form at any time.
FERPA
The University of Southern
Indiana recognizes that parents
play an important role in their
student’s life, and we want
to assist you in your role as
coach. We also recognize and
act in full compliance with the
regulations set in accordance
with the Family Educational
Rights and Privacy Act of
1974 (FERPA), as amended.
12
This federal law assures that privacy rights
concerning student academic records
belong to the parents or legal guardian
through the child’s high school years.
Once the student enrolls at the University,
the privacy rights are transferred to
the student. Basically, this means that
specific information about your student’s
educational record must be communicated
to you from your student. The University
staff and faculty are available to answer
general questions about the University,
courses, policies, procedures, etc.;
however, specific information about your
student (i.e., courses enrolled, grades,
GPA, request for enrollment verification,
etc.) needs to be received from them.
University of Southern Indiana
Knowing this information, it may be
helpful in discussions with your son or
daughter to have an understanding of
the University of Southern Indiana’s
policies. The university expects your son
or daughter to take full responsibility
for his or her education, including the
academic policies in the University of
Southern Indiana Bulletin (http://bulletin.
usi.edu), Schedule of Classes, and the
Students Rights and Responsibilities:
A Code of Student Behavior (www.usi.
edu/deanofstudents/code). Parents will
find it helpful to acquaint themselves
with the policies and procedures found
in these publications, and additional
information that can be found at: www.

University of Southern Indiana
¨¨ Your student should complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.gov.
March 10 is the state of Indiana’s deadline for state-funded programs.
¨¨ If he/she has not done so, your student should request a PIN number to
electronically sign the FAFSA. If your student is considered a dependent
student for FAFSA purposes, you also will need to electronically sign the
FAFSA with your own PIN. You may apply for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov.
¨¨ Early February 2014, you will be able to select the IRS Data Retrieval
option on your FAFSA. We strongly recommend that parents and
students select this option during the initial filing or when subsequent
corrections are made to a 2014-2015 FAFSA application. This option will
streamline and expedite the processing of your financial aid application.
¨¨ Financial aid awards will be calculated once your student
is admitted and we receive the FAFSA. Financial Aid
awards may be viewed via the student’s myUSI. In addition,
paper award notices are mailed to new students.
¨¨ The Direct Loan, which is a federal student loan, will be
packaged to eligible students upon receipt of the FAFSA.
¨¨ Beginning July 1, your student will need to log on to myUSI and
accept, decline, or reduce the Direct Loan. First time borrowers must
use their FAFSA PIN to electronically sign the Master Promissory
Note at www.usi.edu/finaid/mpn.asp and must complete Direct Loan
entrance counseling online at www.usi.edu/finaid/entrance.asp.
¨¨ If your student has received results from the FAFSA and is
interested in applying for federal work study, he/she may
complete a Work Study Resume. The Work Study Resume may
be obtained online at www.usi.edu/finaid/sfaforms.asp.
¨¨ Approximately 30 percent of all financial aid students are selected for
verification. Verification involves evaluating the FAFSA for accuracy.
Beginning with the 2013-2014 academic year, the Department of
Education is moving to customized verification. Verification requirements
may vary from student to student. Your student should check myUSI
to determine what documents may be required. Verification can
take four to six weeks to complete depending on the time of year.
Student awards will not be finalized until verification is complete.
¨¨ Provided the student has completed all requirements, financial
aid will be applied to the account balance, which normally takes
place by the end of the second week of each semester.

Welcome Week is your student’s first
taste of being a student at the University
of Southern Indiana! It is a week full of
activities and events designed to help
students meet other new students, get
adjusted to new surroundings, and start on
the right foot in an academic career at USI.
Details regarding Welcome Week can be

Emerging Leaders
The Emerging Leaders program offers
USI freshmen the opportunity to develop
leadership skills, meet fellow leaders,
and contribute to their university
community. The program focuses on
preparing individuals to succeed and
contribute to their university as student
leaders; so that in subsequent years at
USI that can be active campus leaders.

Making Achievement Possible
Freshmen Survey (MAP-Works)
The MAP-Works survey is an internetbased early intervention tool that is
designed to improve students’ transition
to college and ultimately student
retention and success over time. The
survey asks a variety of questions about
students’ experiences as new students
at USI and is completed during the third
week of classes as part of the First Year
Experience course (UNIV 101). After
completing the survey, each student
receives a personalized feedback report
that includes information about USI
resources and identifies potential areas
for concern. Faculty advisors, professional
advisors, student affairs staff, and FYE
instructors also are able to review these
individual student reports and intervene
when further assistance is needed.

Sexual Violence Prevention
and Response
Sexual violence is an issue of concern
for both students and their families.
Unfortunately, sometimes assaults do
occur at USI, as at any college campus.
USI is committed to creating and
maintaining an educational environment
free of all violence in which all members
of the USI community are treated with
respect and dignity. All forms of genderbased violence, harassment, and nonconsensual sexual activity are prohibited.
Students need to be aware that often
assaults happen when alcohol is involved.
Someone who has been drinking may not
be able to give consent for sexual activity.
Any student who has been assaulted is
encouraged to report the assault to USI
Public Safety, the Dean of Students Office,
or to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff.
Reporting may be done anonymously.
Counseling is available at the USI
Counseling Center 812/464-1867 and
the Albion Fellows Bacon Center, a local
community domestic violence and sexual
assault agency, which can be reached
at 812/424-7273, 24 hours a day.
More information can be found
at www.usi.edu/rfw/sap.
24
Substance Use
Many USI students choose not to drink,
and most USI students who do drink
tend to do so in a reasonable manner.
However, some students do engage
in high-risk drinking. According to
university data, 73.8 percent of USI
freshmen report not drinking when
hanging out with friends. USI’s policies
prohibit alcohol and drugs on campus,
and we need parents to be partners
in our efforts to keep students safe.
University of Southern Indiana
All parents should talk to their students
about drinking and drug use. Students
who do choose to drink should eat before
and while drinking, go out with trusted
friends, and make plans to get home
safely. Drinking large amounts of alcohol
(drinking to get drunk) and being unaware
of what one is consuming is considered
high-risk behavior. Using prescription
drugs in a manner not prescribed, or
that does not belong to the individual,

Academic Advising
At the University of Southern Indiana,
academic advising is an ongoing
educational process that connects the
student to the University. Academic
advising supports USI’s mission of
preparing students to live wisely and
for learning beyond the confines of the
academy. Faculty and staff academic
advisors represent and interpret University
policies and procedures to the student and
help the student navigate the academic
and organizational paths of the institution.
The University is committed to providing
students with accurate and timely
academic advising. During the school year,
appointments are strongly encouraged,
particularly during peak advising times. In
the first year, students will be advised by
advisors in a college advising center (for
students in the College of Nursing and
Health Professions and Pott College of
Science Engineering, and Education), by
faculty within their major or department
USI GUIDE
(for students in the Romain College of
Business and College of Liberal Arts)
or by University Division Advising if
they have not declared a major or are
conditionally admitted to the university.
USI students have certain
responsibilities in regard to their
academic progress, including:
•
Being knowledgeable about
policies, procedures, and
requirements published in the
USI Bulletin and class schedule
•
Determining a course of study and
satisfying the requirements defined
in the USI Bulletin and degree audit
•
Scheduling and appearing
promptly for appointments with
an advisor, when necessary
•
Preparing for an advising session
by having a list of questions and
courses (and alternatives)
•
Following through with appropriate
action after the advising meeting
•
Accepting responsibility for the
academic decisions to be made
An academic advisor can help:
•
Explore academic interests and
determine an appropriate major
•
Design a program of study, meeting
individual interests and needs
•
Map out students’ schedules
and prepare for registration
•
Monitor students’
academic progress
•
Clarify students’ educational
and life goals
•
•
Find activities and opportunities
to enhance students’
academic experience
Develop an action plan, if students
are placed on probation
While your support is important
to promoting student success, it
is essential you encourage your
student to take responsibility for
their education by meeting regularly
with their academic advisor.
As parents and family members, USI
recognizes that you play an important
role in supporting your student through
the academic process. Asking questions
about how their classes are going,
engaging your student on what they
find real passion for, and supporting
your student in the college experience
are specific ways you can help your
student be successful at USI.
Career Counseling
Students who are exploring or rethinking
their major and career options, are
encouraged to utilize University Division
Advising’s career counseling services.
Through interest assessments and
various other resources, staff members
work one-on-one with students to help
them clarify their interests and skills and
identify the major and career options that
closely match their goals. Appointments
will be tailored to students’ specific needs
and concerns. Students can schedule
a career counseling appointment by
calling University Division Advising at
812/465-1606 or visiting us on the first
floor of the Education Center, room 1142.
As parents and
family members,
USI recognizes
that you play an
important role in
supporting your
student through
the academic
process.

Student Life and Activities
The University of Southern Indiana wants your son or daughter
to gain the full college experience. We provide many activities
and services to help students get connected and involved.
Student Development Programs
Earning your degree at USI should always
be your student’s number one goal, but
success in college also should include
gaining leadership skills by getting
involved in campus life. With so many
choices, it may be hard to know where to
start…the answer is the Office of Student
Development Programs. The staff helps
students make the most of their college
experience. Encourage your student to
contact them and get involved. They work
with student organizations, fraternities
and sororities, Activities Programming
Board, Welcome Week, leadership
programs, and new student orientation.
Through involvement with these activities,
38
students can build skills in communication,
critical thinking, self-confidence,
motivation, and conflict management.
Your student can learn more about all of
these programs at www.usi.edu/sdv.
Student Organizations
USI has a variety of student organizations
to get involved with. They range from
academic and professional organizations
to service organizations, special interest,
and sports clubs. Membership in an
organization should reflect personal and
academic interests. If no organization
has your student’s interest, they can go
outside the box and start their own.

University of Southern Indiana
share the mission of preserving
New Harmony’s utopian legacy
by inspiring innovation and
progressive thought through
programs and collections.
Since 1985, Historic New Harmony, a
department in University of Southern
Indiana’s Division of Outreach and
Engagement, has encouraged cultural
and educational programs related to
New Harmony’s important historic
resources. Historic New Harmony is
a unified program of the University
of Southern Indiana and the Indiana
State Museum and Historic Sites.
Some of the opportunities shared by
USI faculty, staff, students, and New
Harmony include research projects and
service learning courses, professional
and personal development retreats,
New Harmony Theatre summer
productions, and New Harmony Gallery
of Contemporary Art workshops and
exhibits featuring Midwest artists.
New Harmony started almost 200
years ago as an experimental utopian
community. The Harmonie Society was
organized in Bavaria and immigrated to
the United States in 1804. They were a
Christian group perfecting themselves
48
for the return of Christ. During their 100
years in this country, they built three
complete towns, including New Harmony.
When they decided to move back east,
the Harmonie Society sold the entire
town to social reformer Robert Owen
of New Lanark, Scotland. He believed
that education should be available to
all people, regardless of their social
status or income, inspiring our public
education system today. Along with his
partner, William Maclure of the Academy
of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia,
Owen attracted leading educators and
scientists to New Harmony for their
grand experiment in community living.
Today, New Harmony is still a small town
of 900 residents. It offers world-class
accommodations and meeting facilities,
dining, shopping, and entertainment.
University of Southern Indiana
Located on the Wabash River, natural
amenities abound for every interest,
including walking trails, bike paths, public
gardens, and nearby Harmonie State
Park. Guided tours of New Harmony’s
historic sites begin at the awardwinning Atheneum, New Harmony’s
visitor center, designed by worldrenowned architect Richard Meier.
USI nurtures New Harmony as a living
laboratory where students and teachers,
tourists and scholars, and leaders and
seekers can come together to experience,
explore, and create. New Harmony offers
USI families a wonderful place to relax and
reconnect, and provides students with
experiential learning opportunities close
to campus. New Harmony is located along
the Wabash River in southern Indiana,
30 miles west of Evansville. For more
