It is so gratifying to lead St. Ursula Villa and celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates whose successes are the culmination of growth and nurturing under the guidance of our dedicated faculty. I am proud of our highlymotivated students who embrace challenge and encourage each other to reach their highest potential. The Class of 2016 amassed merit scholarship offers of $976,560—a new Villa record—providing another clear affirmation of St. Ursula Villa’s remarkable faculty and educational offerings. Every 8th grader matriculated to their first-choice school with most placing into honors level or advanced classes. In the pages of this Villa Voice, we recognize their academic accomplishments as well as well as their awards for kindness, cooperation, leadership, and demonstrating the Christ-centered spirit of St. Angela Merici. The Class of 2016 amassed merit scholarship offers of $976,560—a new Villa record— providing another clear affirmation of St. Ursula Villa’s remarkable faculty and educational offerings. A hallmark of a St. Ursula Villa education, year over year, is to “send forth” young adults who are academically and emotionally prepared for a challenging high school experience and beyond. We know these results are due to our faculty’s high professional standards, constant focus on our mission, spirit of caring, and eagerness to work at the leading edge of teaching and learning methods. Over the past four years, my administrative team and I have engaged with our Primary, Intermediate, and Junior High faculty in an intensive evaluative and continuous improvement process through the Ohio Catholic School Accrediting Association with very positive results. In true Villa fashion, our faculty impressed the OCSAA External Validation Team with their complete buy-in and involvement in the process to always improve the educational experience at St. Ursula Villa. We internally analyzed test scores and other data, identified our strengths and relative weaknesses, developed academic performance goals and assessments, measured growth, and ultimately addressed two specific areas of improvement. From this process, we set an Academic Performance Goal to focus on students’ ability to apply explicit details and draw inferences from informational text—an increasingly important skill in today’s world. We also set a Catholic Identity Goal of deepening students’ understanding of Christian virtues and demonstrating them in their daily lives. While my staff and I maintain our focus on school academics, our Board of Trustees has been focusing on our Strategic Plan. This partnership with the Board and its committees has resulted in initiatives and programs featured in this Villa Voice. “The Portrait of a Graduate” on the facing page is just one outcome from extensive efforts by Board committees and helps define what it means to be St. Ursula Villa graduates—shining examples of which we celebrate in this Villa Voice. Sincerely, Polly Duplace, Principal Portrait of a St. Ursula Villa Graduate As part of St. Ursula Villa's Strategic Plan, the Board of Trustees challenged its Marketing Committee to define the elements of a St. Ursula Villa education which contribute to each of our graduates’ well-documented success. The predominant attributes of a Villa graduate are clearly connected to our mission as a Catholic Ursuline school to nurture the whole child, foster academic excellence, and instill a Christ-centered commitment to society. Every aspect of a St. Ursula Villa education, including academic and extracurricular activities, directly promotes these attributes in every student. This “Portrait of a St. Ursula Villa Graduate “ emerged from extensive meetings with key faculty, administration, current and past parents, current and past board members, as well as top high school administrators who are very familiar with our graduates during their journey through the Villa, high school, college, and beyond. Strong consensus from these conversations resulted in consistent themes encompassing four distinct characteristics: Lifelong Learner, Confident & Engaged Individual, Compassionate Citizen, and Respectful Advocate. This initiative has already proved to be a valuable tool for program planning and decision-making and affirming our current direction as a school. We are pleased to add two enrichment programs for the upcoming 2016-17 academic year to enhance the many educational offerings currently in place for St. Ursula Villa students. The Villa welcomes new faculty members Dr. Matt Cohen (STEM Enrichment) and Timothy Baker (Band and Music). Students in 1st-6th grade will benefit from STEM Enrichment classes with our newest faculty member Dr. Matt Cohen. Dr. Cohen will utilize our STEM lab space in a dynamic new way as he develops students’ abilities to apply logic and develop critical thinking skills in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The STEM curriculum will feature hands-on learning through computer programming and coding while incorporating activities such as reverse engineering, virtual and augmented reality, and robotics. STEM Enrichment will rotate on a specialty class schedule with Outdoor Education, adding another very distinctive learning experience to St. Ursula Villa’s programs. Dr. Cohen earned his PhD in Educational Studies and M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Cincinnati, is credentialed as an Ohio Master Teacher, and certified as a Gifted Intervention Specialist. Most recently, Dr. Cohen helped establish and taught at the Cincinnati Gifted Academy in Hyde Park and is excited to now bring STEM Enrichment classes to St. Ursula Villa where he is a current Villa parent with his wife Dr. Natalie Geier, member of the Villa Class of '97. Dr. Cohen says, “I am very pleased to have this opportunity, and teaching at St. Ursula Villa is a great fit for my entire family!” 5 Dr. Cohen demonstrates computer circuitry at Camp Villa’s Code-Make-TinkerPlay-STEAM Camp. "STEAM" includes Art and Design with STEM. The Villa’s strong Fine Arts and Music programs currently feature Art and General Music weekly for students in preschool through Junior High. These learning experiences will become even more robust as we expand our Music curriculum to include electives of Choir or Band within the scheduled school day. Band instrument options will include flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. Students in 4th through 6th grades will select Band or Choir; Junior High students will have electives of Band/Percussion, Choir, or Guitar. We are pleased to welcome Timothy Baker to St. Ursula Villa’s faculty as Band and Music teacher. Mr. Baker earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Miami University, has an Ohio Multi-Age Music Teaching License, and most recently was Band Instructor/ General Music Teacher at Lakota Local Schools. Mr. Baker’s background includes years of various teaching and performing experiences: he has directed marching bands, played drums in performing bands, and taught private music lessons. Mr. Baker comments, “I am very excited to be part of the music staff at St. Ursula Villa. I am looking forward to introducing band to the students this year. It should be fun and rewarding for all.” HIGHLIGHTS & HAPPENINGS Faith Virtues in Practice Introduced at The Villa Villa students will grow closer to Jesus by imitating His life and virtues through our new Virtues in Practice program. Virtues in Practice will help students gain a deeper familiarity with virtues associated with Jesus’ life and learn more about saints who exemplify those virtues. Students in Kindergarten through Junior High will focus on a different virtue—such as mercy or gratitude—and participate in grade-level, age-appropriate lessons related to the particular saint who models that virtue. Virtues in Practice will provide another layer to St. Ursula Villa students’ spiritual development, adding to current school programs such as Service Learning which naturally incorporates discussion of compassion and generosity, among other virtues, into the students’ projects. Chapel masses will provide additional worship opportunities to celebrate saints and how they modeled Jesus in their lives. Ms. Laura Riehle, our Ursuline Campus Minister, will implement Virtues in Practice as part of St. Ursula Villa’s Religion curriculum, an outcome of our Catholic Identity Goals through the accreditation process. Ms. Riehle explains that the natural tie-in from our Ursuline identity to the Virtues in Practice program is “Angela Merici’s Christ-centered spirituality…. Angela wanted people to come to know Jesus Christ. The virtues that Jesus lived in His life shone through individual saints who followed Jesus. Each saint that lived showed us something about Jesus.” Virtues in Practice will be taught through a spiraling curriculum, an educational approach that introduces key concepts to students at a young age and covers these concepts repeatedly with increasing degrees of complexity to reinforce previous learning. Every three years, Virtues in Practice will focus on the same virtues in greater depth with new saints introduced as further models of those virtues. The program covers twenty-seven virtues and saints through the three-year cycle, with activities ranging from journaling and self-reflection to illustrating a story of the saint’s life. “The Virtues in Practice lessons provide another way for Villa children to grow in their faith and positively impact our school community on a daily basis.” PRINCIPAL POLLY DUPLACE Villa faculty will participate in professional development sessions during the 2016-17 academic year to prepare for a program roll-out in 2017-18. When implemented, students will study a specific virtue each month as part of a larger school focus on demonstrating that virtue in their daily lives. Principal Polly Duplace says, “The Virtues in Practice lessons provide another way for Villa children to grow in their faith and positively impact our school community on a daily basis.” Focusing on our Ursuline heritage, the Villa will study St. Ursula and St. Angela Merici on their Feast Days and study other saints such as St. Francis of Assisi and St. Francis Xavier throughout the year. 6 HIGHLIGHTS & HAPPENINGS Community Villabration: March Madness! bar food was provided by Funky’s Catering, thanks to Michael Forgus (parent to Rachel ’03 and Leah ’04), and kicked off by a “tailgate” in the MPR courtyard featuring craft beers and Villa Family Cellars wine tastings. Honorary Chairs Dan and Ann Salcido, proud parents of five St. Ursula Villa graduates (Alyssa ’04, Marie ’07, John ’09, Claire ’13, and Daniel ’16), encouraged spirited bidding and thanked attendees, volunteers, donors, and sponsors for making the event a huge success. Ann and Dan Salcido enthusiastically served as Honorary Chairs. This year’s Villabration marked 40 years of fun and fundraising to benefit St. Ursula Villa’s outstanding educational programs. On Saturday, March 19th, a soldout crowd gathered on campus sporting their favorite team’s apparel while bidding on one-of-a-kind sportsthemed Live and Silent Auction offerings. Gourmet sports Arts, Music, Fellowship, and Fun at Gino DiMario Benefit Hundreds of St. Ursula Villa students, families, and friends gathered for the 12th Annual Gino DiMario Birthday Benefit and Spring Concert and Art Show in May. After sharing a casual dinner on the Manor House lawn, Villa families and friends enjoyed student musical performances and artwork displayed in the Manor House and MPR. Proceeds from this very special event allow St. Ursula Villa to continue providing creative and inspiring cultural opportunities for our students while at the same time honoring Villa student Gino DiMario’s life and love of the arts. 7 This fun event raised over $215,000 through Silent and Live Auctions which included a Special Appeal generating $27,600 to “light up the campus” with enhanced internet and wi-fi to accommodate St. Ursula Villa’s rapidly-increasing educational tech offerings. Special thanks to Huntington Bank and HCS Foundation, our Event Sponsors. ST. URSULA VILLA ANNUAL REPORT From the Board of Trustees Chair Dear Villa Family and Friends, I always look forward to the Villa Voice annual Graduation Issue as a celebration of our graduates’ accomplishments. It reminds all of us why we choose to be part of the St. Ursula Villa community. Each of our students uniquely succeeds because our administration and faculty are passionate about every child’s education. My role on the Board of Trustees, along with my colleague trustees, is to support and play an advisory role on a strategic level. While Polly Duplace and her talented faculty focus on the school’s continuous improvement through our accreditation process, our Board of Trustees has been working on a parallel track with our Strategic Plan to ensure that our mission is being realized, our faculty is supported and nurtured, our communications are open and effective, and our enrollment is robust. The Strategic Plan helps warrant that St. Ursula Villa continues to provide the values—and value—for our community and remain at the forefront of education now and into the future. Our donors play a key in role in keeping St. Ursula Villa at that forefront. Concurrent with our nowcomplete Foundation for a Lifetime building campaign, generous donors contributed additional resources which allowed us to establish an endowment fund to help sustain our school’s firm financial footing. The endowment fund’s principal balance will remain intact while the interest generated from it will be used to help support strategic goals of the school. Our Investment Advisory Committee has established a sound investment policy statement governing the endowment on a day-to-day basis. The goals of the endowment are to provide some spending ability along with continuing growth and protection of principal. So far, the endowment is directed to financial aid and programming, thanks to a pledge by the Ursulines of Cincinnati and to generous funding from the Annie W. and Elizabeth M. Anderson Foundation. Our longerterm strategic goal is to grow our endowment to fund specialty and enrichment programs, professional development, and increased financial aid through planned gifts including bequests, life insurance policy proceeds, and annuities. We welcome your participation! On behalf of St. Ursula Villa’s Board of Trustees and Administration, faculty, and students, I thank each of you who have contributed to our school’s success. You help make the Villa an outstanding educational community and one of which I am proud to be a member.
