Welcome to Ag Progress Days!
Welcome
We are pleased to have you as our guest at the Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research
Center for this 41st exposition, which provides a wonderful opportunity to learn about
the many exciting advancements in agriculture and related fields to which our faculty
and staff are contributing.
We hope you will take full advantage by exploring the many exhibits and taking part
in the tours, workshops, and other presentations. This is your chance to get a firsthand
look at some of the research, extension, and educational programs conducted by your
land-grant university with the support of our partners, friends and stakeholders.
We have a wide variety of attractions designed to appeal to virtually everyone,
from commercial exhibits and field demonstrations highlighting the latest agricultural
technology, to gardening advice, food demonstrations, horse exhibitions, and activities
for kids. Be sure to visit the Pasto Agricultural Museum for a look back at the history of
farming and rural living. And when you need a break for rest and nourishment, check
out the nonprofit and commodity-group food vendors ready to serve you a slice of
Pennsylvania’s bounty.
To help guide your visit, feel free to stop at the information booth near the top of
Main Street to get directions or answers to your questions. If there is anything we can do
to make your stay more pleasant, our faculty and staff are here to assist.
Thanks for coming, and enjoy your day!

Exhibitors now have specific booth numbers, assigning them
to their location to connect with our new exhibitor map and
registration system. Booth labels identify the building, tent, or area
with the first one or two letters coded for name of a location (xx),
see Locations Abbreviation Key (at the right).
Indoor exhibits located in the building or tent are numbered
from the entrance, beginning with the hundred number indicating
rows 1 thru 5, with the higher numbered booth typically on the
southern side of the exhibit tent or building.
Outdoor exhibit booth labels use the first letter or letters
identify if they are located East (E) or West (W) of Main St. or
located on Main St. (M). In addition, outdoor exhibit booth labels
use the border streets of Demo Alley (DA) and Harrington Lane
(H) as noted on the map. The first one or two numbers identify
the street they are located, streets 1 thru 13. Typically the exhibitor
booth space numbers on north side of street are even and those on
south side are odd numbers.

Tours
Hands-on tours highlight various aspects of agriculture. Get a free ticket and board the bus at the tour registration and loading area at the top of Main Street.
There are a limited number of tickets available per tour, so stop by early to reserve your seat. Note: Walking and/or standing is involved once the bus arrives at
the tour destination.
American Chestnut
Foundation Plantings
Tour (1.25 hours)
See American chestnut breeding orchards. Learn about the history and demise of the American chestnut tree, how to plant and maintain
chestnut trees, and The American Chestnut Foundation’s breeding program. Speak with volunteers working to restore the species.
NEW!
This tour will provide participants with information regarding the practice of rearing Holstein calves for beef. Management and nutrition
of calf-fed Holsteins in a feedlot setting will be emphasized. Observe cattle fed by this system. Hear about marketing strategies and
techniques for Holstein steer calves. Gather information from, and pose a question to nutritionists, the PA Beef Council, and cattle
buyers. This demonstration is being brought to you by the PA Beef Working Group (a collaboration of: Penn State Extension, PA Beef
Council, Center for Beef Excellence, and PA Cattlemen’s Association) and the PA Department of Agriculture with support from JBS.
Dairy Beef Feedlot Tour
(1 hour)
Bus leaves daily at 10:00 a.m. with additional tours on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., and 5:00 p.m., and
Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Note: Walking/standing involved. No restrooms available.
Bus leaves Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., and Thursday at 11:00 a.m.
Note: Walking/standing involved. Restrooms will be available.
Habitat Management
for Deer and Other
Wildlife Tour (1.5 hours)
This tour will focus on food plots and natural habitat management practices used on public or private property as part of a Quality Deer
Management System to improve habitat for many wildlife species while producing healthier and larger deer. Visit habitat demonstration
plots in the woodlot and neighboring fields.
Bus leaves daily at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Note: Walking/standing involved. No restrooms available.
High Tunnel Tour
(2 hours)
High tunnels are inexpensive structures used for extending the growing season and improving yields and quality of vegetables, berries,
and cut flowers. At Penn State’s High Tunnel Research and Extension Facility, strawberries and raspberries are being grown in containers
in 15 tunnels with five different types of plastics to better manage plant growth, temperatures, and pests. To learn how to better manage
heat load, four additional tunnels are equipped with various types of solar-powered automated venting options, including a ridge vent,
roll-up roof, roll-down sides, and roll-up sides. Tomatoes are also being grown in three tunnels to better understand tomato nutrient
needs.
Bus leaves daily at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Note: Walking/standing involved.
Pasture Management
and Rotational Grazing
Demo (1.5 hours)
This tour will address real-world pasture management issues, specifically for equine and cattle, as well as highlight conservation
practices that can support livestock on your farm or property while protecting natural resources. Observe materials and technologies
that go into setting up paddocks or an exercise lot for your animals. Hear about ways to maintain healthy grass and legume pastures
and see first-hand the benefits of good pasture management for soil health. A hands-on live demonstration of components and methods
involved in moving animals through a rotational grazing system will also be presented.
Bus leaves daily at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., with an afternoon trip on Tuesday and Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Note: Walking/standing
involved. No restrooms available.
NEW!
Precision Ag Tour
(1.5 hours)
This tour will demonstrate the use of several precision ag technologies in corn production that can help to improve yields, reduce costs,
and improve the potential for better understanding crop responses to inputs in the field. For this demonstration we have planted a field
scale evaluation of different plant populations with a variable rate corn planter and will be able to harvest for silage with a yield monitor
to evaluate both yield and forage quality. We will discuss the potential of this system and other tools to improve crop management
decision making in the future.
Bus leaves daily at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Note: Walking/standing involved. No restrooms available.
Short Rotation Woody
Crops for Biomass Tour
(1 hour)
What are short-rotation woody crops? How do they contribute to biomass feedstock? Why are they being promoted for marginal planting
sites? What type of species should you grow and who will buy it? Tour includes a visit to a demonstration plot with fast growing willow
and poplar trees. Learn how to grow, harvest, and produce this crop as an alternative income opportunity that helps provide sustainable
energy supplies.
Bus leaves daily at 12:00 p.m. Note: Walking/standing involved. No restrooms available.
Woodlot Management
Tour: Decisions and
Actions (1.5 hours)
Woodlot management is not for the faint-of-heart. To do it well, takes time, commitment, and planning. It seems that every decision and
activity raises new challenges and sometimes, opportunities. The woodlot tour will visit a pine thinning for wildlife and timber, a riparian
buffer restoration effort following a hemlock salvage of woolly adelgid mortality, and regeneration response to a timber harvest on 15
acres. Explore the woodlot and gain insights into how your decisions and actions can help you attain the values you seek from the forest.
Bus leaves daily at 12:30 p.m. with additional tours Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Note:
Walking/standing involved in thick forest area. No restrooms available.
Penn State’s Deer Pen
Research Tour
Visitors can pre-register for a special 5:00 p.m. opening on Tuesday and Wednesday, of Penn State’s Deer Pen Research facility on
campus; however, there will not be a bus tour offered to this site. Guests must pre-register at the tour registration area at the top
of Main Street to receive an admittance ticket to the facility. Preregistered guests will also receive biosecurity information and driving
directions.

The Equine Experience
The Equine Demonstrations
The Equine Experience, presented by Penn
State’s Equine Science program, features
demonstrations, exhibits, workshops, and
seminars on equine-related topics.
New demonstrations for this year include
carriage racing, jousting, and miniature horses
at the Main Horse Arena. Workshops in the
Equine Exhibits Building (Main and West
13th Streets), include new information
on the equine influenza virus, corrective
shoeing options, animal-assisted therapy, and
service dogs.
Pasto Museum
Main Street
Witness the workings of the “Champion
Thresher” from the late 1800’s as it separates
grain from bundles of harvested wheat. This
activity will show how the wheat from the
field is turned into grain, and then into
flour for our food. Also don’t miss “The Axe
Whisperer” Jim Walizer as he shares his passion
for the history of timber, logging and forestry
in the Commonwealth. Help support the
museum by bidding on something special in
our Annual Silent Auction on Tuesday and
Wednesday, with more than 200 items available
for bid or cash-and-carry purchase. Bids open
on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. and close promptly at
3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
