Unlike many communities in New Mexico whose history spans centuries, Rio Rancho’s spans just mere decades. Beginning with the purchase
of a 55,000-acre ranch northwest of Albuquerque in the 1960s, AMREP
Southwest laid the foundation for what would become “The City of Vision,” culminating with a city that incorporated in 1981. By comparison,
Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico, was founded in 1680.
In 1980, the Intel Corporation chose Rio Rancho to build one of its main
fabrication facilities. Not being burdened by history, tradition or custom,
Rio Rancho welcomed this high-tech giant, and the huge industrial complex that Intel built, and continually renovated over the years, which produces and exports their cutting-edge products to this day.
Rio Rancho has always had its focus on the future, as evidenced by the
bold creation in 2006 of a new City Center on what was just a desolate
mesa in the geographic heart of the city. Anchored by a modern Rio Rancho City Hall and the state-of-the-art Santa Ana Star Center, this forward-looking development has welcomed the likes of Hewlett-Packard,
Central New Mexico Community College, UNM West and the UNM
Sandoval Regional Medical Center.
The eight great lodging options and over 90 local and national eateries
located in Rio Rancho welcome you to our young city, and we hope that
you enjoy your stay here.
Gazing Upon The City of Vision Since It All Began

Turtle Mountain
Fat Squirrel
Timbuctu
When we opened our first
restaurant in Rio Rancho
back in 1999, the city had
50,000 residents yet very
few dining options. The
growth in population to
today’s 87,000 residents
has thankfully allowed
the culinary landscape to
expand, and our restaurant
operations have expanded to
follow suit. We now operate
three of the most popular
restaurants in the city, each
providing an experience that
is unmatched anywhere in
Rio Rancho.
Liz and Nico Ortiz, Proprietors
2
Our original restaurant, Turtle Mountain Brewing Company, has been Rio Rancho’s
neighborhood brewpub since 1999, serving up the best pizzas, calzones and grinders
from our wood-fired oven and hand-crafted ales and lagers from our on-premise
brewhouse. It also offers a wide variety of appetizers, salads and pub favorites.
Come join us for a pint of one of the dozen or so beers we have on tap daily. You’ll
find our atmosphere welcoming, our staff friendly, our fare hearty and delicious and
our beers exceptionally flavorful. If you are interested in watching soccer, we are the
only official U.S. Soccer Bar in New Mexico. And we also offer the games of NFL
Sunday Ticket on our two 120” high definition projection TVs. Being fans of
the show “Cheers,” we envisioned a place where regulars and visitors alike
could come in and feel like they are part of the family. Our employees are
encouraged to get to know customers by name as well as background
and interests. We feel that coming to Turtle Mountain should be
like coming to a friend’s house for dinner, so please, make
yourselves at home! Come and see for yourself why locals
call Turtle Mountain “the Pub,” or simply “the Turtle.”
We’re confident that Turtle Mountain will become the
place where everybody knows your name.
b
Our second restaurant pays tribute to a squirrel who lived in the
trees on the back of the property and used to dine on the discarded
grain used in the brewing process. Opened in the fall of 2008 in the
space originally occupied by Turtle Mountain, the Fat Squirrel Pub & Grille
quickly became Rio Rancho’s most comfortable place to eat and socialize.
It is a casual, family-friendly and affordably upscale pub offering a wide
variety of traditional pub fare ranging from hearty appetizers, salads
and sandwiches to pub favorites like fish and chips and hand-cut
USDA Choice steaks. In 2009, Albuquerque the Magazine
recognized our quality menu by voting our half-pound
Angus burger one of the best burgers in the city. If
you are interested in something sweet, we have several
house-made desserts, including New York cheesecake,
potato bread pudding, apple crisp and a stout chocolate
brownie. To complement your meal, we have a selection of 20
draft beers as well as many more in the bottle. We also offer a
hand-picked selection of wines by the glass or bottle. For those of you
interested in watching sports, we offer 9 TVs that show all
of the games on NFL Sunday Ticket, NHL Center Ice and
MLB Extra Innings in high definition.

b
Our most recent expansion took us out to the Mariposa
community in northwest Rio Rancho, where we opened
Timbuctu at Mariposa in May of 2012. The 44 seat bistro
serves only the finest USDA Choice steaks, veal, duck,
seafood, sandwiches, burgers, salads and pastas, a
selection of delicious appetizers found nowhere
else in the city, plus house-made desserts and
a full brunch menu on the weekends. We
offer a selection of five draught beers
from Turtle Mountain, as well as a
hand-picked selection of wines
from around the globe. And
we offer this delicious fare
with the best view from any
restaurant in Albuquerque.

The guiding principle of all of our
restaurants is to provide the people of Rio
Rancho and surrounding communities with
delicious, high quality foods and beverages
at an affordable price in a comfortable,
friendly environment. We are proud to
operate independent, locally-owned
restaurants that we feel offer a
superior experience to that of
our corporate competitors.
We are confident that you will
appreciate the quality of the food
and service at Turtle Mountain, the
Fat Squirrel and Timbuctu, so please
sit back and enjoy your visit with us!

DIVERSE CUISINE
Rio Rancho restaurants are fresh, vibrant and multi-cultural. This is our
community. This is our cuisine. Since most of us who live in Rio Rancho come from somewhere else, diners can find fabulous recipes from
across the country and the globe right here in Rio Rancho.
Rio Rancho cooks up something special for every taste and every budget. Don’t know the difference between authentic Mexican and New
Mexican cuisine? In Rio Rancho, you will learn how, what, where and
why they differ. How about some pizza that will rival the pies of Chicago, New York City or Sicily? What about homemade pasta that will
make you think you are in Little Italy? If you are a burger eater, no worries, Rio Rancho is home to some of the best Green Chile Cheeseburgers around. Try some Irish flair or indulge in your favorite Asian cuisine
with your choice of Chinese, Japanese, Thai or Vietnamese.
For the non-local, Mexican and New Mexican food are easily lumped
into one category. With over a half-dozen restaurants between the two
categories, you have a chance to figure out what the (subtle) differences
between the two are. Is it the green chile? The cilantro? The flat enchiladas versus the rolled ones?
Pizza… Pizza… Pizza… A never-ending argument among Rio Rancho locals is who makes the best pizza in town. We all have our favorite
and we all sneak a taste of the others to see who is raising the stakes.
Only you can decide for yourself which is best by sampling them all.
You won’t be disappointed in the process.
You have not had the true New Mexico experience until you have tasted
a Green Chile Cheeseburger! This is such a big deal and sparks so much
controversy that former Governor Bill Richardson created the New
Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail, which featured more than a
few stops right here in Rio Rancho.
Looking to have some fun with your food…. How about billiards,
darts and bowling with your meal?…. Or make it a “Dinner and
Movie” night by taking in the newest blockbuster movie at Premiere
Cinemas’ all-digital state of the art theater.
For a unique taste of Rio Rancho, be sure to visit Matheson Winery
and learn about the history of New Mexico winemaking.
Rio Rancho offers more than 90 dining options. No matter what
you fancy, you will find a great interpretation and offering of your
favorite dishes right here in Rio Rancho.

Toro Bar & Grill
New Mexico Flavors
The restaurant’s constantly evolving menu is filled with variations of
traditional dishes and brand new ones, too.
“We work with New Mexican flavors, but our dishes are not just
smothered in chile and cheese. We take all those flavors, add new
ideas to the dishes, and combine flavors together. We offer a selection
of hand cut steaks, chicken and seafood while playing with familiar
flavors and present them differently,” said Chef Dan Brittingham.
Handmade dishes and ever changing menu items with the changing
seasons has become an important part of Toro’s new philosophy, not
only in the kitchen, but in their bar as well.
“We prefer actually cooking our dishes and being creative instead
of just taking items out of the box and warming them up. Where is
the fun or love in that? When it’s 90 degrees
outside, personally I don’t want a really heavy and savory dish. I want
something filling but with lighter
and brighter flavors. During the
winter, I want to feel the comfort and warmth of a good meal
or a great cocktail,” Brittingham
said.
The dessert menu is always changing
at Toro. But one of their dishes, the
green chile cheesecake, always remains. “It’s a crustless cheesecake
that we make in house, but we use fresh sliced Granny Smith apples
to mimic that snap as your fork cuts through it. It’s topped with a
green chile and apple compote. Then we add a little caramel and more
fresh apple slices. The heat from the green chile and the tartness of
the apples are really lightened by the creaminess of the cheesecake.
It’s a fun dish,” Brittingham said.
“The handmade concept continues in the Toro Bar with award winning margaritas, an extensive tequila selection, and a variety of other
spirits, beers and wines.” Brittingham said. “Some drinks do better
and some do worse, but people’s tastes are constantly changing and
evolving, so we try to change and evolve as well. Plus, we love to offer
a variety.”

On the southern point of Rio Rancho is the newest concept
in convenience stores in the area. Latitudes is a one-stop
destination to fill up your car, shop for dinner or have your
meal prepared by our bistro chef to supply your family with a
healthy meal alternative.
Our bistro offers a premier selection of outstanding
sandwiches, fried chicken, pizza and full-blown dinners
to fulfill everyone’s needs as well as deli style Boar’s Head
meats and cheeses. Breakfast time brings our world famous
pancakes to the stages along with biscuits and gravy so good
that grandma’s doesn’t compare.
Our homemade scones and cinnamon rolls are a perfect
complement to our lattes and, if you are in a hurry, we
offer a full selection of Grab’n’Go breakfast burritos
and sandwiches. Breads and pastries are baked
fresh daily.

Lookin’ for some fresh, homecooked BBQ and friendly service
in Rio Rancho? Look no further
than THE Smokehouse of Rio
Rancho, which has been serving
Texas-style barbecue for more
than 20 years. The Smokehouse
has been family owned and
operated since 1989, and is open every day. The
unique way of home-cooked, Texas-style barbeque
begins with the finest quality meats slowly pitsmoked to enhance flavor and tenderness for all to
enjoy. The Smokehouse does not hide the flavor or
appearance of its pit-smoked dishes by serving the
BBQ sauce right on the side.

for the three days because at Pork & Brew there is more than

Taste of Rio Rancho –
This event is exactly what the name says it is. It is a food sampling event featuring the restaurants, breweries and wineries
of Rio Rancho. The main purpose of the event is to connect or
re-connect residents and visitors alike to the great eateries of
Rio Rancho. It is an affordable family-friendly event held in the
Santa Ana Star Center. The event also features other activities

Sports, Sports, Sports –
Namaste Tastings
Over forty-plus weekends a year, Rio Rancho hosts local and
regional sporting events at the club, high school, youth, adult
amateur and professional levels. Whether it is New Mexico
Activities Association (High School) Championship events, the
USSSA State Baseball Championship, the pro bowling New
Mexico Open or New Mexico Youth Soccer State Cup played
on the neighboring Santa Ana Pueblo, Rio Rancho invites and
welcomes athletes, coaches, fans, parents, administrators, team
moms and everyone else to rest, re-charge and re-fuel in Rio
Rancho during your sporting event.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta –
Yeah, yeah, yeah… We know… This event takes place in Albuquerque. But everyone likes to be part of a winner… This is one
of the best events on the globe! With balloons frequently flying
to the north, Rio Rancho serves as a frequent landing spot and
post-flight meal location for many balloonists and chase crews.
The eastern edge of Rio Rancho, on the bluff above Corrales,
offers fantastic views of the Rio Grande valley as balloons take
flight and eventually descend. Rio Rancho’s seven hotels offer
great access to Balloon Fiesta via NM528 or the event’s Intelbased park-n-ride.

Tenpins & More
Home of the rich New Mexico Open tournament
and Rio Rancho’s only bowling center, has been a
local fixture since 1983, serving up bowling, games,
food and beverages to an average of more than
2,200 people every week for almost 29 years.
It’s a gathering place for folks of all ages looking to
participate in all sorts of activities as the name “&
More” implies. Regular league and tournament
bowlers ranging in age from 3 to 99, as well as

atmosphere and excitement that bowling can
provide. Bowlers can eat before, during and after
their games in either “Food in the Fast Lane” or
“The Perfect Shotz Sports Bar & Grill.”
Snacks served at the Bowling Center include huge
burritos, club sandwiches, large quesadillas that
require two people to eat, and a nacho supreme dish
that could feed the whole bowling team.
Tenpins & More caters for more than 350 birthday
parties a year as well as company parties/teambuilders
and numerous private functions that have included
weddings, engagements, baby showers, bat and barmitzvahs and just about anything else.
When you add in the Sports Bar that runs Karaoke every
Saturday night from 8 p.m. and weekly poker tournaments
every Sunday from 2 p.m., alongside 13 satellite TVs feeding
sports from all over the country, it’s certain there is plenty
going on at Tenpins & More.
