2015 Annual Report
what it’s all about. our report to the community 2015 Dear Colleagues & Friends of CornerHouse, As a member of the CornerHouse board of directors, there are many aspects I thoroughly enjoy. I genuinely feel that I am a part of the organization. Not only does CornerHouse create a positive impression in our community, we are also dedicated to educating those outside of our community on a national and international level with our training program. To have the opportunity to contribute to these efforts in any way is a great honor and I would ask how could you NOT find great meaning in this work? As a board member for CornerHouse, I am most proud of being a part of a team that recognized the need to continue to help families after the trauma of abuse. We were able to work together to develop family support services to help continue that healing. We’ve grown even more during this past year and you will get an update on that growth in this report. CornerHouse matters because of what it stands for. All communities hope for these same things: children safe from harm and if they are harmed, a place where they will listened to and honored. I firmly believe that the work CornerHouse is doing will help accomplish the elimination of child abuse. This is why we matter so much. I hope that you will enjoy reading this report. It’s because of the support of our community that we are able to offer the services we do. We see many opportunities for continued growth and during this next year, we’ll engage the community in setting priorities. I find it exceedingly humbling when I bring others to a CornerHouse event and watch their reaction as they start to realize the services CornerHouse provides to our children, vulnerable adults and families affected by abuse. I am honored to be a part of this outstanding organization. Thank you for your support. What am I humbled by? Sincerely, Chief Mike Reynolds, CornerHouse Board Chair CornerHouse assures that the voices of children what it’s all about. our report to the community 2015 Dear CornerHouse Colleagues & Donors, What a year it’s been! As CornerHouse begins to wrap up its strategic goals and to prepare for a new planning process in a few months, I am proud of so many things, it’s hard to know where to begin! We have launched our blended learning program for training! This has been a long standing goal and we have accomplished so much, including updating our advanced training and adding this component to our basic training. In family services, I am proud that we’ve expanded the number of families we served, adding some new staff and completing training for our team at the Center for Mind Body Medicine. And last but not least, we continue to serve children, teens and vulnerable adults in our forensic interviewing program with incredible professional skill and passion for a person centered approach. Having all of these wonderful activities is energizing and stimulating—I love coming to work each day! There are challenges and opportunities which make us grow and serve our clients and families and the professionals who help them in a wide variety of ways. It’s the opportunity for creativity and dedication to our mission to listen which enriches each day. It’s why I am pleased to present this annual report to you! It’s our way of being accountable to you as a colleague, a donor, a referent and we are proud to do so. CornerHouse matters because we are changing the lives of those we serve; they in turn change our lives. During this past year, our board agreed that we should focus on expanding our individual donor program and you have joined with this effort. We are assuring that the resources will be here whenever needed. That’s a huge responsibility! Why does CornerHouse matter? The clarity of that came to me recently one evening when families and children were gathering for support group and a small person ran into my office. He found it hard to slow down (I was delighted) and he didn’t say much. For just a moment our eyes met and I suddenly felt humbled with the knowledge that in a tiny way, we are impacting this child’s life. We matter. The ability to do this is a precious gift. With your support you make this happen. Thank you! Sincerely, Patricia Harmon, CornerHouse Executive Director and adolescents are heard. “For just a moment our eyes met and I suddenly felt humbled with the knowledge that in a tiny way, we are impacting this child’s life. Hope. Hope that is born of the knowledge that what we do is important. Hope that I am likely to have the opportunity to learn and share something that makes a difference – even a small one – in someone’s life. We do what many others cannot even think about, let alone do. Even the professionals that work side-by-side with us ask, “How can you do this every day?” And at CornerHouse, we not only do it, we do it very well. Whether it’s our delivery of Forensic Services, or Training Programs, or Family Services, or our Financials – our daily functioning is driven by integrity and concern for the most vulnerable. And not speaking “for” them, by defending their right to be heard themselves.
