2015 Annual Report
what it’s all about.
our report to the community
2015
Dear Colleagues & Friends of CornerHouse,
As a member of the CornerHouse board of directors, there are
many aspects I thoroughly enjoy. I genuinely feel that I am a part
of the organization. Not only does CornerHouse create a positive
impression in our community, we are also dedicated to educating
those outside of our community on a national and international
level with our training program. To have the opportunity to
contribute to these efforts in any way is a great honor and I would
ask how could you NOT find great meaning in this work?
As a board member for CornerHouse, I am most proud of being
a part of a team that recognized the need to continue to help
families after the trauma of abuse. We were able to work together
to develop family support services to help continue that healing.
We’ve grown even more during this past year and you will get an
update on that growth in this report.
CornerHouse matters because of what it stands for. All
communities hope for these same things: children safe from harm
and if they are harmed, a place where they will listened to and
honored. I firmly believe that the work CornerHouse is doing will
help accomplish the elimination of child abuse. This is why we
matter so much.
I hope that you will enjoy reading this report. It’s because of the
support of our community that we are able to offer the services we
do. We see many opportunities for continued growth and during
this next year, we’ll engage the community in setting priorities.
I find it exceedingly
humbling when I bring
others to a CornerHouse event and watch their reaction as they
start to realize the services CornerHouse provides to our children,
vulnerable adults and families affected by abuse. I am honored to
be a part of this outstanding organization.
Thank you for your support.
What am I humbled by?
Sincerely,
Chief Mike Reynolds, CornerHouse Board Chair

our report to the community 2015
Dear CornerHouse Colleagues & Donors,
What a year it’s been! As CornerHouse begins to wrap up its strategic goals and to
prepare for a new planning process in a few months, I am proud of so many things,
it’s hard to know where to begin! We have launched our blended learning program
for training! This has been a long standing goal and we have accomplished so much,
including updating our advanced training and adding this component to our basic
training. In family services, I am proud that we’ve expanded the number of families we
served, adding some new staff and completing training for our team at the Center for
Mind Body Medicine. And last but not least, we continue to serve children, teens and
vulnerable adults in our forensic interviewing program with incredible professional skill
and passion for a person centered approach.
Having all of these wonderful activities is energizing and stimulating—I love coming
to work each day! There are challenges and opportunities which make us grow and serve our clients and families and the
professionals who help them in a wide variety of ways. It’s the opportunity for creativity and dedication to our mission to listen
which enriches each day. It’s why I am pleased to present this annual report to you! It’s our way of being accountable to you as a
colleague, a donor, a referent and we are proud to do so.
CornerHouse matters because we are changing the lives of those we serve;
they in turn change our lives. During this past year, our board agreed that we
should focus on expanding our individual donor program and you have joined with this effort. We are assuring that the resources
will be here whenever needed. That’s a huge responsibility!
Why does CornerHouse matter?
The clarity of that came to me recently one evening when families and children were gathering for support group and a small
person ran into my office. He found it hard to slow down (I was delighted) and he didn’t say much. For just a moment our eyes
met and I suddenly felt humbled with the knowledge that in a tiny way, we are impacting this child’s life. We matter. The ability
to do this is a precious gift. With your support you make this happen. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Patricia Harmon, CornerHouse Executive Director

Why do I give to CornerHouse?
The staff at CornerHouse has one of the toughest jobs
imaginable – working with people (especially children) within
the most difficult situations. We hope our support helps
CornerHouse provide our community a safer environment
overall – in addition to the care and encouragement our
children need to foster a better future.

I am humbled to see the wide gap between what is known about childhood abuse,
and the lack of knowledge, misperceptions, and denial among parents and caregivers.
I want to help children, and those who care for them, “find their voice”, so this
trauma is minimized or avoided altogether.

Why do I support CornerHouse?
I unfortunately cover stories on the news where I just go home and cry. What happens to kids
is often so awful. Knowing that there’s an organization like CornerHouse, one that is local and
yet renowned around the world, to give these kids a voice, is a great feeling. I’m so grateful to
be a part of making things better for kids, through my support for CornerHouse.

What does CornerHouse do?
CornerHouse is a great community resource that is on the
frontlines of child abuse; assuring that the voices of children,
adolescents, and vulnerable adults are heard. CornerHouse is also valued as an industry resource; teaching and
sharing best practices, observations, and techniques in forensic interviewing.
Founded in 1989, CornerHouse is an accredited Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) that coordinates multidisciplinary teams to assist each individual and offers services that are designed to minimize trauma to reported
victims of abuse and witnesses to violence, to provide support and assistance to the entire family, and to hold
offenders accountable.

The amount of trust that is granted to us in the work that we do: from the
caregivers who trust us to provide a safe, comfortable, respectful experience
to their precious person (whether a child, adolescent, or vulnerable adult); from the individual, who trust us enough to
hear their story - or sometimes trust us enough to let us know that it isn’t their right time to be able to tell; from the
investigators that we work in partnership with who trust us to have a role in these complex investigations; from the
community, who trust us with their support so that CornerHouse can continue to provide services that will make a
difference for individuals and families; from the learners who attend our training, who trust us to provide opportunities
to learn new skills or utilize their skills in different ways; from the host sites that invite us to their communities for
training, who trust us to have a role in impacting their cases and their community through engaging in training with
their interviewers and investigators; and trust in each other, trusting that each of us who are part of CornerHouse
approach every task, every interaction, and all that we do with intention and purpose.

CornerHouse matters because people matter, and every thing
we do keeps that at the heart. We cannot take away what
the individual may have experienced as a victim of abuse or a witness to violence, but we can have an impact on the
experience that they have when they walk through our doors. From the moment they arrive, greeting individuals and
their families as if they are expected and welcome; during the interview, listening to what the person has to say and
providing them the opportunity to share without receiving judgment, shock, or any indication that what they are saying
cannot or should not be said; and after the interview, by providing the opportunity to continue to receive support.

What drives me to do this work?
Hope. Hope that is born of the knowledge that what we do is
important. Hope that I am likely to have the opportunity to learn
and share something that makes a difference – even a small one – in someone’s life.
We do what many others cannot even think about, let alone do. Even the professionals that work side-by-side with us ask,
“How can you do this every day?” And at CornerHouse, we not only do it, we do it very well. Whether it’s our delivery of
Forensic Services, or Training Programs, or Family Services, or our Financials – our daily functioning is driven by integrity and
concern for the most vulnerable. And not speaking “for” them, by defending their right to be heard themselves. We do that by
paying attention to the ‘big’ AND the ‘little’ things: We hear what children, adolescents, and vulnerable adults have to say and
help strengthen families. We encourage, empower and facilitate training, so other professionals can do and be their best.

CornerHouse matters because of the courage each person here musters to help bring light into the darkest of human experiences.
This is very hard work—make no mistake about that. Yet everyone I encounter in my work is willing and able to show integrity,
compassion, professionalism, and dedication to stand against maltreatment and for equity and justice.

also have the opportunity to impact so many other individuals and their experiences
through the people we train the families we serve, the volunteers that give of their time,
and the many people who attend our events and donate to support our mission.

Why does CornerHouse matter?
A judge permitting a video
recording of the child is the
ultimate endorsement of [CornerHouse’s] protocol. It mirrors case law requirements
for admissibility for video recorded interviews, all over the metro area it’s respected.
The interview tactics are reliable, their documentation is exemplary, you really don’t
have any fights over the video recorded interviews, if they led anyone down a path
because it’s right there to see, and that documentation is critical. A judge seeing a
child disclosing in a non-adversarial setting like they are in court, is key.

to talk with other
people going through
similar situations. It’s not
something you can openly
talk to with people who
haven’t gone through this–
they don’t understand,
there’s a lot of stigma
around it, they can’t relate
to me and my feelings and
emotions. It was good to
see where everyone was at
and hear success stories.”
