Dear Reader,
The City’s Fun Fest kicked off the summer with plenty of rides,
fireworks, community booths, food and entertainment as a good time
was had by all. This four-day event also included a classic Car Show
and a 5K race. Plans are already underway for next year’s celebration to
add more summer fun to make it bigger and better. A thank you goes
out to all the organizations, donors and volunteers who helped to make
this festival a success.
Construction at 9730 Valley View Road is underway for the ‘Avenue of
Macedonia’, a 98-bedroom Nursing Home and Rehabilitation
development. The building will have private rooms with private baths
and showers, all are handicap accessible. It is a family owned third generation owner whose grandparents
opened the facility in the 1960’s. They have 9 facilities located in Ohio. We will continue to update you
with their progress.
A City Survey is being conducted on the proposed payroll and profit tax increase levy. This Special
Election will be taking place on Tuesday, August 2nd. We encourage your participation as we value your
input. Copies of the survey can be found at the Recreation Center, City Hall and of course the survey can
be taken on line by going to our website www.macedonia.oh.us or go to our various Facebook pages and
click the link under Survey! Revenue collected from this levy would be specifically earmarked for
road repaving/replacement and related storm water repairs only. Your vote counts!
Much needed attention is being given to the City’s Longwood Park area. Over 2 miles of the Longwood
Park nature trails were recently improved. Take time out to enjoy nature and walk them! Our Service
Department is currently in the process of building baseball dugouts. A much needed feature for our
baseball league players! New electronic signage is being developed for the Longwood Park Recreation
Center entranceway soon to be installed. Sugarbush, a 23-acre park located on Ledge Road is being
renovated with a basketball court and hiking trails that follows a waterfall and ravine area.
We are also working toward beautifying the city’s entry ways with new signage and planters.
Construction continues on 82. We have received word from ODOT the closure of Shepard Road on the
north side of 82 will begin on July 5th. ODOT is assuring us the total project completion date is this Fall.
We have much to be proud of in this City as the bustle of progress underscores a residential and business
friendly growth. I was honored to serve the residents of this community in 1988 as Mayor and my
enthusiasm for continuing to build one of the finest communities in Summit County remains strong.
Please do not hesitate to call me if I can be of assistance to you.
Have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July with family and friends as you continue to enjoy the lazy, hazy days
of summer!

CONGRATULATIONS TO JULY EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
Emily Miller, Recreation Department
Emily joined the Macedonia Family Recreation Center team in September
2015. She is employed as a Front Desk Attendant and Supervisor,
although she often is the first to volunteer to fill in wherever needed. She
has assisted with many programs, camps and events…and was most
recently one of the friendly faces providing rides on shuttle carts during the
city’s annual FunFest!
Emily was born in Mayfield Heights and lived in South Euclid until she
was almost 4 years old. Her family then moved to Brecksville and Emily
recently graduated with honors from Brecksville-Broadview Heights HS in
May 2016.
Emily was very active as a child. She played basketball, softball, soccer
and loved to ride her bike! She ended up enjoying soccer the most. She
was a key contributor on the girls HS soccer team. In addition, she played
the Alto Saxophone in Marching Band, as well as the Oboe in the Concert
Band.
Emily has an older brother and two dogs, Mandy and Chewy, who she loves to play with and take care of. One
of Emily’s favorite things to do is go shopping!
Emily is currently enrolled at Kent State University with an honor roll status. She plans to become a nurse!
Making one life better at a time. Thank you for all that you do for the Recreation Department, Emily!
Congratulations!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BUSINESS OF THE MONTH…
Goddard School
2073 Alexandria Way • Macedonia, OH 44056

A Lifelong Love of Learning Begins at The Goddard School located in Macedonia
For nearly 30 years, The Goddard School® has been a trusted name among parents and families. Its classrooms are
safe, nurturing environments for children six weeks to nine years, offering age-appropriate opportunities to explore and
discover. From infants to toddlers, preschoolers to school-age children, highly trained teachers lead each child to reach
developmental milestones, preparing the children for social and academic success.
At The Goddard School located in Macedonia, OH, the on-site owner, Chris Lindley, works to make sure every family
enjoys a warm, positive experience. They strive to provide the best quality program for each child, and the F.L.EX.®
Learning Program ensures that they meet high standards specific to early learning, development and care.
The F.L.EX.® Learning Program (Fun Learning Experience) is grounded in research on how children learn best:
children experience the deepest, most genuine learning when they are having fun. It’s designed to help build each
child’s emotional, academic, social, creative and physical skills to provide a well-rounded experience and ensure each
one becomes confident, joyful and fully prepared in school and in life.
Technology is often used throughout the day. Our oldest children utilize SMART Board technology as well as touch
screen computers. Our faculty utilize portable devices, such as iPad’s, to input and deliver Daily Activity Reports to
parents on a daily basis. This daily communication allows parents to stay connected and fully involved with their
child’s learning each day.
Another important aspect of The Goddard School located in Macedonia is its strong emphasis on safety. “We consider
the children’s health and safety in all we do,” Chris says. “From every detail of our classroom and playground design
to our high standards of cleanliness, we’ve tried to think of everything.”
The Goddard School located in Macedonia is now enrolling for the fall! For more information or to schedule a tour,
please visit www.GoddardSchool.com/MacedoniaOH or call 330-468-0488.

Happy July and Happy summer! “Summer’s here and the time is right for dancing
in the streets”. Summer is also the best time to host your garage sale. It’s important
to keep 2 important things in mind; first, garage sales are permitted without a fee or
cost to the property owner; secondly, garage sale signs are permitted exclusively
upon the property of the garage sale. Locations off site; within the public right of
way; attached to a utility pole, in the tree lawn or attached to a tree lawn tree are
not permitted and will be removed without notice. Signs that are removed will be
kept at the Building Department for 30 days. Be mindful of your sign locations.
July is routinely thought of as the middle of summer and in the Department of Building Zoning and Planning, it
exists as the peak activity season. While building appears as the elementary function and construction activity is
somewhat obvious, this month’s article will concentrate on the behind the scenes efforts of planning and zoning
within the Department.
Planning and Zoning, while seemingly quite different, fall under the same umbrella. That umbrella is the Zoning
Code which defines the use of all properties within the City. It also manages the manner in which property is
developed and is maintained.
Planning is a branch of the Building Department which consists primarily of the Planning Commission. The
Planning Commissions reviews applications and determines the impact of a use defined by factors such as
location, area and extent. When those factors conflict with the Zoning Code they are referred to the Board of
Zoning Appeals to determine if the factors involved are sufficient to permit variance from the Code.
The Board and Commission are charged with assessing those factors and determining their appropriateness on a
case by case basis without allowing a detail such as precedence to be part of their approvals or disapprovals. Their
determinations are the most important in the growth and future of a city.
Fortunately, Macedonia has the assistance of a professional City Planning Consultant, Brian Franz to give
guidance to both the Board and Commission. Brian’s knowledge of the industry and the legal society are vital
when viewing the management and development of property within a City’s vision of future growth. The City can
call upon other professionals such as The City Engineer, Landscape Architect and Arborist as needed to insure site
drainage, screening and buffering are adequate and in conformity with plans that have been approved. (The costs
of which are borne by the applicant and not the City)
The City has recognized a need for stronger enforcement of property maintenance and property use management
and therefore has employed a full-time Zoning Inspector. Jonelle Melnichenko has been appointed to regulate and
enforce uses within the Zoning Code and manage property maintenance and point of sale programs. Jonelle’s
undergraduate degree is in Urban Planning and she has recently completed a master’s program in Public
Administration. Applications received by the Building Department for the Planning Commission or the Board of
Zoning Appeals are reviewed by Jonelle prior to the appropriate routing.

This year Zoning has been charged to create and manage programs that relate and promote maintenance of
properties, both residential and non-residential. The programs consist of the following:
1. Reviewing and assessing tall grass and noxious weeds. This is seasonal and occurs randomly with the
highest volume in May and June; generally only the chronic properties resurface. The properties posing this
nuisance are issued corrective orders. The failure to comply results with the abatement actions for removal
taking place at the owner’s expense.
2. Review, identification and assessment of properties. The City works diligently to proactively identify
properties that present maintenance concerns and code violations. This includes both residential and
non-residential properties. In each case corrective orders are issued. The City works with property owners
towards compliance, however in extreme cases court action is necessitated.
This year the Summit County Land Bank requested City assistance in a County-wide program which included
the assessment of nearly 50 local vacant and or foreclosed upon properties to determine their need for
abatement or demolition.
3. Review of the State Route 82 Commercial Corridor Retail District including Macedonia Commons. The
City recognizes this retail district as vital to the community. Each day tens of thousands of motorists commute
on State Route 82, East Aurora Road through Macedonia. Many stop for shopping, dining and entertainment.
This gateway through the City needs to give an important first and lasting appearance to those passing through
or contributing to the economic function of the district.
4. Concern-driven investigations. In any given year the City receives and reviews many requests for property
investigations. The City will, in each case, review the property and determine if a violation to the codes and
ordinances of the City does exist. If so, a corrective order is issued identifying the issues in conflict with the
codes and ordinances and consequences for non-compliance.

NOT PAY.
The General Fund started 2016 with an Unencumbered Fund Balance of $1,224,324.81 and it is anticipated
that it will end at $562,000.

100 foot frontage home.
The City receives in real estate taxes $291.62 for a median home value of $189,080 in providing the above
services see attached for an example property tax invoice.
It cost the City $9,959,426 in 2015 to provide Police, Fire and Service Department services to its residents.
The payroll and profit tax will be reduced from 2.00% to 1.75% on July 1, 2017 reducing income tax revenue
by $1,000,000 to the Family Recreation Center.
In December 2016, 45% of the final payment of the 2011 Bond Issue ($484,357) needs to be paid out of
the General Fund.
In 2017 old debt payments and new debt for approved equipment will increase the City's remaining debt
payments by $221,268.

july 2016
The National Fire Protection Association reports an average of 10,000 hospital-treated
fireworks injuries have occurred in the U.S. over the last several years. Most fireworks
injuries occur around the 4th of July celebration, but are not limited to that holiday. Many
other holidays, Christmas, New Year's, Labor Day, etc. have fireworks as part of their
celebration. How can you use fireworks safely? There are no safe ways. Leave the use of
fireworks to the professionals, people who are trained in their proper use. In many areas
fireworks are illegal. For the safety of you, your family and friends, obey the law.
What’s legal to use?
The only fireworks that are legal for consumer use in Ohio are “trick and novelty” items such as sparklers, snaps, glow snakes and
smoke bombs.
These include: Auto foolers with and without report, bat snaps, bobby traps, Chinese fun snaps, cigarette loads, fun snaps, ghost and
bat snaps, ghost bomb snaps, gravity pak-snaps, magnum poppers, flame-proof party poppers, sky lanterns and trick bank matches.
What’s legal to purchase? What are the restrictions on their use?
Anyone 18 or older can buy firecrackers, bottle rockets, roman candles and fountains within the state from a licensed retailer. You
can purchase them but can’t “technically” use them in Ohio. At the point of purchase, the buyer must sign a form that says the
fireworks will be transported out of Ohio within 48 hours. If you are an out-of-state resident, you transport them within 72 hours.
What are the penalties for fireworks violations?
In Ohio, a first-time offender of any fireworks-related laws risks confiscation of the fireworks and a first-degree misdemeanor,
including a $1,000 fine and up to six months in jail or both.
Recommended Safety Tips
• Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
• Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.
• A responsible adult SHOULD supervise all firework activities. Never give fireworks to children.
• Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Save your alcohol for after the show.
• Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
• Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.
• Use fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles.
• Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
• Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.
• Never carry fireworks in your POCKET or shoot them into METAL or GLASS containers.
• Do not experiment with homemade fireworks.
• Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible
materials until the next day.
• FAA regulations PROHIBIT the possession and transportation of fireworks in your checked baggage or carry-on luggage.
• Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department.

Fireworks Fact Sheet
Size of the Fireworks-Related Fire Problem



In 2011, fireworks caused an estimated 17,800 reported fires, including
1,200 structure fires, 400 vehicle fires, and 16,300 outside and other fires.
These fires resulted in an estimated 40 civilian injuries and $32 million in
direct property damage, with no reported fire deaths.
On Independence Day in a typical year, fireworks account for two out of five
of all reported fires, more than any other cause of fire.

Risk of Private Fireworks Use
Using 2000-2010 data, the risk of fire death relative to hours of usage is higher for
fireworks than for cigarettes, making fireworks the riskiest consumer product.
 The risks with fireworks are not limited to displays, public or private. Risks
also exist wherever fireworks are manufactured, transported, stored or sold.
 “Safe and sane” fireworks are neither. Fountains, novelties, and sparklers are
designed to throw off showers of hot sparks. Temperatures may exceed 1200°F.
NFPA is strongly opposed to any
consumer use of fireworks.
NFPA encourages people to enjoy public
displays of fireworks that comply with
NFPA 1123.
FACT: The following
four states have banned
access by the public to
all fireworks: Delaware,
Massachusetts, New
Jersey and New York

THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER…
Lazy, hazy days of summer…with that comes a friendly reminder to stay hydrated as well as a cou0ple of fun facts
why it is important to drink water!
1. It rehydrates you – after sleeping all night, your body is naturally dehydrated. Drinking water after waking
will provide your cells with hydration! Drinking coffee further dehydrates you making that glass of water first
thing extremely important!
2. Fuels your brain – Water intake supports your brain working at optimal level. Your brain is 75% water;
therefore a morning glass of water will leave you feeling sharp and clear throughout the day.
3. Flush out toxins – Drinking water after waking will remove toxins built up during the night while your body
repaired itself. Water replenishes energy and balances hormones. Your body will be able to absorb more
nutrients from the breakfast foots you eat.
4. Increases metabolism – Drinking water first thing kick starts your metabolism and increases your calorie
burning potential throughout the day. Also, you feel fuller and your appetite is curbed.
5. Prevents and cures disease – Japanese culture believes that the practice of drinking water first thing in the
morning will cure even the harshest diseases over time.

BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP!
By: AJ Allen, IT Director – City of Macedonia
I am as guilty of this as most people – backing up important files on your home computer. These days we
have to be aware of many threats that can wipe out your files such as malware or a hardware failure. There
are many services available for cloud storage or devices you can use at home. In this article I will discuss
some options to keep your important files safe.
• Cloud Storage service – This can be free/paid (depending on storage requirements) services such as
Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive. Most of these services give you 5 or 10GB of free storage and
require you to pay monthly beyond that amount. These files can be shared across many devices such as
phones or tablets along with your desktop or laptop. Keep in mind these are just storage services and you
will have to drag and drop or upload your files to store them in the cloud. Still a great solution for free.
• Cloud Backup service – These are services that you install a program on your computer and it will run a
nightly or scheduled backup of your files. Service providers include iDrive, Carbonite or Mozy. The huge
benefit to these programs is the automatic backup schedule – set it and forget it! Also with any cloud
solution you don’t have to worry about losing data because it is replicated on the companies’ servers.
• Home NAS (Network-Attached Storage) – These devices hook into your home router (hardwire or
wirelessly) and you can backup files directly to this drive. Brands such as Western Digital, Seagate and
Buffalo make NAS units. Be careful and buy one with dual drives (RAID) in case of hard drive failure
your files are copied to both drives. This can be a low cost solution with no recurring fees but you can
still lose files if the drives fail or some other catastrophic event happens.
• DVD’s or flash drives – The ultimate low tech solution – just backup your files periodically. This is
normally a manual process and you just drag and drop your files. DVD’s are also great for copying your
family pictures and taking that DVD to a safety deposit box at the bank (in case something happens to
your house). Keep in mind flash drives are electronic devices which can fail at any time and I have seen it
happen many times! Archival DVD’s are great and can last over 100 years – but keep in mind you will
need a DVD player in 50 years to view the DVD!

SUMMER SAFETY TIPS
Hiking, Biking & Driving
• While operating a motor vehicle be aware of your speed. Speeding creates an unsafe environment.
• Be courteous…share the road with those on bicycles and motorcycles.
• Be careful driving. Do not be distracted by your cell phone or the radio!
• Watch out for deer. Does have fawns that will follow slightly behind as they cross and often feed near the roadways.
• When hiking any trail, be certain of your location and plan a route.
• It is always a good idea to carry a map, compass and/or GPS unit.
• On an extended bike/hike adventure, inform a responsible person of your route plans.
Home Security Tips for Vacation Season
Summer is a hot season for home burglaries, with break-ins typically peaking in July and August. Keep your home and
valuables safe from the inside out with these important tips.
• Disconnect appliances. Unplug all appliances, large and small.
• Lower the A/C. If you'll be away for a weekend, set your air conditioner to 80 degrees to lower air conditioning costs; if
you'll be gone longer, shut it down entirely.
• Lights on timers. Improve home security by putting lights in main living areas on timers and setting them to simulate
occupancy.
• Don't broadcast your absence. A burglar can easily be tipped off to your absence by an unanswered phone, so turn off the
ringer and keep your everyday answering message in play. And never, ever leave a message or post on a Facebook or Twitter
page saying, "I'm away on vacation."

• Adjust blinds. Leave blinds and curtains in normal positions wherever possible, taking care not to expose belongings
attractive to prying eyes.
• Secure valuables. Protect valuables from theft (important papers, jewelry, etc.) in a home safe or safe deposit box.
• Disconnect the computer. Make sure your computer is turned off and disconnected from the Internet, particularly if it
contains personal information. Also put away or shred telltale bills and receipts that add to the risk of identity theft.
• Set the alarm. Activate your alarm system; be sure to notify the home security company of your days away and provide
interim contact information.
• Lock up. Ensure that all windows and doors are securely locked before you leave for vacation. This may sound elementary,
but all it takes is one of them ajar to welcome an intruder and threaten home security.

Macedonia Senior Center * Established 2013
Located at Macedonia City Center 9691 Valley View Road.
Our handicap accessible Center includes Community Room, Game Room, Kitchen and Restrooms.
Lunch is served twice weekly offering nutritional meals to senior members of our community at a
super low affordable price. Since established, the participation group has tripled in size and word has
spread across the Northern portion of Summit County. Participants freely establish their own card
games and mahjong games or simply stop in for a quiet place to read. The Center also offers Musical
Entertainment, Movie Theater days, Bingo days, Birthday Parties, Podiatrist appointments, Resources
& Contacts to local services & businesses. Participants enjoy snacks & beverages as well as pool table,
media, televisions, wii & games. Coordinator keeps the calendar full of meaningful topics & activities
that allows the group to be social & productive. Some of our achievements have been giving back to
the community through donating to the Emergency Assistance Center and contributions to the Summit
County Department of Family Services.
The group also strives to achieve personal goals such as; healthcare refreshers, medical professional
panels, scam prevention, blood pressure monitoring, crafts and sponsored health center visits.
The City of Macedonia subsidizes this program and the Senior Coordinator doubles as Administrative
Assistant for the Macedonia Fire Department.

Hope that everyone is enjoying the summer so far. The Service Dept. has been off to a great start with a lot of
work being performed starting with much needed park improvements.
At Longwood Park, one of three walking trails received a complete remake that was completed just in time for
the 5k run held during the weekend of The Spirit of Macedonia “Fun Fest”. The total distance of the trail is
about 1.9 miles. We have received positive feedback from residents who are using the trail at this time and look
forward to working on the other two in the near future.
Additionally at Longwood Park, focus has been put into our baseball fields. We are currently in the process of
building eight dugouts which will be enclosed in masonry and have roofs placed over them for our league
players. I would like to thank the NHAA for their assistance and patients during the construction by allowing us
to continue moving forward with this project while games where still in play. These also have been a long time
coming and look forward to having completed by und of summer.
Street signs (city wide) are being retrofitted. We are near completion of replacing all street signs to be “high
visibility”. In addition to this, we will be covering our wood sign post with solid vinyl to reduce maintenance
costs that have been performed throughout the years. Currently we are working on the South side of town and
working our way to the North. Please keep in mind that it is illegal to place signs of any kind on street posts and
charges can be filed if caught doing so. This is a small request to keep our city looking nice.
Storm water related jobs are in the process as well. We are currently working on ditch requests and moving to
catch basins and road culverts. Should you notice a problem with a catch basin on your street, please notify the
Service Dept. so we can get addressed.
Have a great Summer !!!
