THE LINK January/February 2013 New Program Advisor Katrin Teel is the new Program Advisor for the Accounting, Business Management, Administrative Management and Administrative Assistant programs. She is an experienced administrator, policy advisor and college instructor. Katrin returns to Beal College as Director of the Business Studies program. In 2011 she was in her second year of teaching in the Business Management and Allied Health departments and worked as an Adjunct Instructor within the Van Loan School of Graduate and Professional Studies at Endicott College. In June 2011, she accepted an appointment by Governor Paul LePage to serve the people of Maine as a Senior Policy Advisor and advised the Governor on all issues related to health and health care. As former director of the Wellness Council of Maine, an affiliate of the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce, she worked with employers throughout Maine to develop employee wellness programs to improve health and reduce healthcare costs. Her position at the Chamber strengthened her pro-business resolve and provided a strong background regarding issues surrounding local business development in the Bangor region. Katrin has volunteered on nine missions to Latin America. In that capacity, she has served as an operating room nurse, set up teaching programs on women’s health, participated in a pilot program to provide health care in remote Indian communities in the Ecuadorian jungle, taught as a nurse educator in Bolivian schools, and worked with HIV positive orphans in the Dominican Republic. She holds an undergraduate degree in nursing and a master’s degree in business, both from Husson University. PEER TUTORING Don’t wait until it’s too late to ask for help. CONGRATULATIONS MARDI!! PERFECT ATTENDANCE Christopher Dyer from the Law Enforcement program has been awarded Beal College’s Perfect Attendance Award for MOD 2, 2012. Christopher’s name was drawn out of a basket with other students who did not miss any class from October 29th - December 20th. Along with receiving a certificate, he received a gift card in the amount of $20. Each MOD, Beal College will award a student with perfect attendance. Work hard and you may be the next lucky recipient! CONGRATULATIONS CHRIS!! Staying Safe and Healthy in the Winter Although winter comes as no surprise, many of us are not ready for it’s arrival. If you are prepared for the hazards of winter, you will be more likely to stay safe and healthy when temperatures start to fall. Many people prefer to remain indoors in the winter, but staying inside is no guarantee of safety. Take these steps to keep your home safe and warm during the winter months. Winterize your home Install weather stripping, insulation, and storm windows. Insulate water lines that run along exterior walls. Clean out gutters and repair roof leaks. Check your heating systems Have your heating system serviced professionally to make sure that it is clean, working properly and ventilated to the outside. Inspect and clean fireplaces and chimneys. Install a smoke detector. Test batteries monthly. Have a safe alternate heating source and alternate fuels available. Prevent carbon monoxide (CO) emergencies. Install a CO detector to alert you of the presence of the deadly, odorless, colorless gas. Check batteries regularly. Learn symptoms of CO poisoning: headaches, nausea, and disorientation. Be prepared for weather-related emergencies, including power outages. Stock food that needs no cooking or refrigeration and water stored in clean containers Keep an up-to-date emergency kit, including: battery-operated devices, such as flashlight, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio, and lamps; extra batteries; baby items; and cat litter or sand for icy walkways. Many people spend time outdoors in the winter working, traveling, or enjoying winter sports. Outdoor activities can expose you to several safety hazards, but you can take these steps to prepare for them: Wear appropriate outdoor clothing: layers of light, warm clothing, mittens, hats, scarves, and waterproof boots. Sprinkle cat litter or sand on icy patches. Learn safety precautions to follow when outdoors. Be aware of the wind chill factor. Work slowly when doing outside chores. Take a buddy and an emergency kit when you are participating in outdoor recreation. Carry a cell phone. Protect your family from carbon monoxide. Keep grills, camp stoves, and generators out of the house, basement and garage. Locate generators at least 20 feet from the house. Leave your home immediately if the CO detector sounds, and call 911. When traveling, be aware of current and forecast weather conditions. Avoid traveling when the weather service has issued advisories. If you must travel, inform a friend or relative of your proposed route and expected time of arrival. Follow these safety rules if you become stranded in your car: Stay with your car unless safety is no more than 100 yards away, but continue to move arms and legs. Stay visible by putting bright cloth on the antenna, turning on the inside overhead light (when engine is running), and raising the hood when snow stops falling. Run the engine and heater only 10 minutes every hour. Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning by opening window a little and make sure the tailpipe is not blocked. Above all, be prepared to check on family and neighbors who are especially at risk from cold weather hazards; young children, older adults, and the chronically ill. If you have pets, bring them inside or provide them adequate, warm shelter and unfrozen water to drink. National Center for Environmental Health: www.cdc.gov/features/winterweather EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION The Early Childhood Education program prepares students to become teachers in pre-school/ nursery programs, lead teachers in centers and/or own their own daycare or pre-school. They also have enough education to be an Education Technician II in a public school. Core classes at Beal College give students the opportunities for interaction with young children. Students plan activities through literature, arts and crafts, play and music, circle time and much more. The children enjoy the mornings especially the lunches and treats our students prepare for the them. During the 2-years, field experiences are incorporated into the classes. 200 hours are spent directly in the field. Many of the classes include a number of “hands -on” projects in the classroom. Students have the opportunity to practice their ideas and lesson plans with each other and they truly experience how “learning is fun.” In the last few years new classes have been added that focus directly on special education. Doreen Page who has many years of experience in this field, teaches these classes. More emphasis will be placed on working with children in the autism spectrum. Graduates from this program have found success as daycare lead teacher assistants, directors of daycares and pre-schools, nursery school teachers, daycare owners, Ed Techs and some have pursued a Bachelor Degree at Husson, Thomas College and on-line colleges. 2 Professional Development certificates are earned as well. One in the literature class on “Sharing Books with Babies and Toddlers,” and a state mandated reporter certificate is awarded in the abuse and neglect course.
