Engineering and planning are the key
to picture perfect inground pools
Better pools are built on a
foundation of superior materials,
workmanship & planning. There are
very few products where the difference
between the best on the market and
the worst is only about a 12% cost
spread. But that’s all the difference is
when shopping for a swimming pool.
The increase is distributed between
the costs for superior materials and
those required to attract superior
craftsmen.
Choosing a pool builder who
offers a totally integrated &
engineered bill of materials based
not only upon cost, but upon the
expected longevity of the pool and
its overall appearance, will pay big
dividends in terms of minimizing
aggravation and maintenance costs;
not to mention the eye appeal of your
finished project.
Planning
should
begin
by
establishing a budget for your
project. The pool and equipment,
depending upon its individual size &
shape, the equipment you choose and
the lot where it is to be installed will
generally cost between $34,000 and
$42,000 including building permits.
Landscaping, fencing & utility
hookup costs will be extra.
Planning the size, shape &
location of the pool will be dictated
by size, elevation and drainage
patterns of your property and the
sight lines from the house which
overlook the pool area.
Don’t
underestimate
the
importance of proper drainage
around the pool. It is the root of many
problems including the sinking of
pavers and floating liners. Addressing
drainage with your pool builder to
establish the correct elevation &
positioning of the pool and with your
landscaper to maintain the overall
drainage pattern for your yard,
you can eliminate the associated
problems completely.
The positioning of the pool to
provide good sight lines, whether
you are indoors or sitting on the
patio, will allow you to keep an eye
on children using the pool as well as
provide the added enjoyment of just
looking at the pool from both areas.
Today’s pools can be essentially
maintenance free. Including a
saltwater generator, an automatic
cleaner, and an AquaLink Pool
Equipment controller will remove
you from most of the chemical care,
cleaning and the turning on & off of
pumps, filters, lighting and heaters
whether you’re at home or away.
Good planning should allow
for the present or future inclusion
of a spa in your aquascape. A spa’s
relaxation and therapeutic values
make them attractive to today’s
families’ active lifestyles.
Finally allow for between 3 to 4
weeks for the average project from
start to finish. The pool will usually
be completed in about a week but the
landscaping and extra patio areas
are a lot more weather sensitive
and can add a few weeks to the
project. A word to the wise is plan
your first pool party a month
after the project begins to avoid
needless pressures on you and your
pool builder. •

Onground pools,
an attractive
alternative
Onground pools offer the good looks
and permanence of ingrounds at a very
attractive price. They are constructed
from the same gauge galvanized
steel panels as used with inground
construction. They can be partially
buried because they are engineered to
accommodate earth pressure from the
outside of the pool as well as the water
pressure from the inside of it. The use
of high gauge galvanized steel also
protects against acidic soils and the
potential corrosion implications.
The decking for onground pools
can be customized to fit any yard
regardless of its size or elevation
variance.
Another feature that has increased
their popularity with today’s smaller
lots is that they normally won’t require
the wider access route for the heavy
excavation equipment used for inground
pools.
No wonder their popularity has
increased so dramatically since the
1970’s when they were first offered as
an option when choosing a pool.

first introduced, there was just one shape

Pool water care? It’s as
easy as taking a dip!
Good pool water should be: odourless,
clear, clean, sanitized and stable.
Your pool filter will take care
of cleaning the water by removing
suspended contaminants. If you have
a sand filter your only job will be to
clean the filter by completing a task
called backwashing. This procedure
usually takes no more than 5 minutes
per week and is as simple as setting
the dial on your filter to the backwash
position and watching it do the work for
you. Cartridge & D.E. filters have to be
manually cleaned & take a little more
effort.
The other characteristics of good
pool water are achieved by monitoring
& adjusting the following 4 parameters
of the water on a regular basis:
The good news is that all it takes to
get accurate readings for all these is a
single “Dip Test”. You simply dip a test
strip into your pool and in 15 seconds you
have accurate, easy to read results for all
1. pH (the water’s relative acidity
or alkalinity)
2. Total Alkalinity (the water’s
ability to resist pH change)
3. F
ree Chlorine (the level of
Sanitizer in the water available
to protect against pathogens)
4. S
tabilizer level (the water’s
ability to resist chlorine
depletion by sun light)
4 of the parameters. It is that easy.
This test system even identifies the
range of acceptable readings for each
parameter.
If any result is not within the
accepted range as stated on the labels
of the products used to adjust each of
them, each product has easy to follow
dosage charts to put your pool back in
balance.
There are other parameters that
should be monitored regularly such as
hardness & copper content but these
tests are best completed on a sample
that you bring to Pioneer’s water lab for
testing.
Today’s pools usually use some sort
of chemical feeder to dispense sanitizer
into the pool water continuously.
The most you have to do with these are
to refill them weekly or in the case of salt
water generators is to add salt directly
to the pool water 2 or 3 times during
the season.
It really is that simple and easy. •
Filters & pumps - It’s more
than a matter of horsepower
Choosing the right pump and filter for
your pool is a little more complicated
than simply buying the largest tank and
highest horsepower pump available.
Even a small tank will clean the
pool water adequately. Larger tanks
will allow you longer times between
backwashing or cleaning cycles. It is
more a matter of how much air borne
debris will be carried into your pool
from the surrounding areas. The
average inground pool can get by with
as little as a 22” tank which probably
will have to be backwashed/cleaned
about once a week. A 24” tank in the
average yard can go closer to 2 weeks
between cleaning cycles.
POOL EQUIPMENT & MAINTENANCE
Horsepower is dictated by the
following factors:
1) The distance your filter is situated
away from the pool and the difference
in elevation between these two areas.
2) The longer the distance and the
higher the climb for pool water to be
sucked to your filter the higher the
horsepower you will require.
3) If you will be using an Automatic
Pool Cleaner that utilizes the Filter
Pump to operate this will also increase
the load on the motor and require
more horsepower.
4) Elbows & or other impediments
to the flow of water in the plumbing
of the pool increases the demand for
horsepower. Each elbow or significant
appliance adds the equivalent of
approximately 10 feet of extra run for
your pump to handle.
Pools in most back yards and
with most of today’s popular optional
equipment require no more than 1
Horsepower Pumps. But no matter
which Pump & Motor combination
you require be sure to consider the

popularity with homeowners

How to choose an automatic
pool cleaner
between suction or pressure-side
models. If you already have an inground pool, suction-side cleaners
are the easiest way to go. Suction
cleaners for in-ground pools attach to
your pool through a dedicated vacuum
line or the skimmer and work off of
the suction from the circulation pump.
Suction cleaners are cost effective,
simple to use and do a great job of
cleaning. The top of the line suction
cleaner is the Zodiac G4. It features

If you are building a new pool,
consider having a pressure cleaner

Salt Systems – the natural
way to sanitize your pool
It is possible to have pristine water
without having to constantly monitor
and adjust your pool chemistry. In
fact, you can do it without ever having
to buy, handle or add chlorine to your
pool again! Saltwater chlorination
has become the favoured method of
sanitizing a swimming pool because it
is the easiest, most effective and most
environmentally friendly method
available.
A salt system uses electrolysis to
produce chlorine right at the pool.
Unused chlorine then reverts back to
salt to be used over and over again.
Because a salt system provides a
constant supply of chlorine to the pool
there are fewer fluctuations in pH and
alkalinity levels making water much
easier to balance. There’s also no
longer a need to shock with high doses

All the controls were hidden at ground
level and behind an access panel that
