Annual Meeting Sunday, March 15 At City Hall
Ken Herger Will Present Ag Ideas
Patterson native Ken Herger will present the
program at the upcoming annual meeting of the
Patterson Township Historical Society.
Herger is the Society’s ag equipment curator.
With a willing crew of friends, he has begun
restoration of several pieces of old ag equipment
including a massive century-old harvesting machine
acquired in 2013 by the late Ed Torrison, Herger’s
predecessor.
The annual meeting, to which all members are
invited, will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 15,
in the council chambers at City Hall. An election of
directors will be held at the meeting.
It is the Society’s intention to work toward
establishment of an antique farm equipment
museum. Herger will discuss his equipment work
with the aid of a video presentation.
Ken Herger gives Historical Society President
Carol Scoles an up-close view of the large
harvesting machine he is about to renovate. It
came from the Pleasanton area and is similar to
those used on the West Side some 100 years ago.

Refreshments will be served
His acquisitions have included not only the huge
harvester, which initially was pulled by teams of
horses or mules, but several other pieces as well.
And Herger is optimistic that numerous other
antiques of display quality are in the immediate
Patterson area.
One piece came from his late uncle, Paul
Herger. It is a Model A converted into a mower in
Walter Filippini’s shop and used by Paul years ago
to mow the lawn at the high school.
Another was donated by the late Tom Alderson.
It is a 1921 potato sprayer pulled by two horses that
sprayed organic oils on the crop.
He also has a 1936 Minneapolis-Moline tractor
and a 1920 Fortson tractor what was used as the
area’s first almond shaker.

President’s Message
“Volunteers are not paid – not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.” Author
Unknown
Think of a local club, church or non-profit. Is it successful? Has the organization grown and become
something our community relies on? Anything that these groups accomplish is done with volunteerism.
Without volunteers, anything worth doing, seeing, playing, hearing, watching, eating, and becoming
involved in would not exist.
Our Historical Society is no exception to this rule. We enjoy the wonderful privilege of preserving
our local history with enthusiasm.
Once again, however, I must ask for each of you to seriously consider giving some of your time to
our efforts. We have some friends who do work in their own homes. Photo identification, file sorting
and some computer work. Please, we need your help.
I hope to see you at our Annual Membership Meeting. It will be Sunday, March 15 at 2:00 p.m. at
the City Hall Council Chambers.
Our main guest speaker will be Ken Herger. Ken and some local volunteers are preserving our local
ag heritage in the form of restoring antique equipment. He will give us a look at some of the projects
currently underway. This is all leading us to having a fine Agricultural Museum one day in the near
future. Please come and hear our plans.

PHS Centennial Planning –
Save Labor Day Weekend
The planning of the Labor Day weekend celebration of the centennial of the first class to graduate from Patterson
High School is picking up steam.
The celebration will truly be an all-class reunion. All former students, teachers and administrators, plus guests and
community members, are invited.
Your Historical Society is represented on the committee by Director Linda (Jackson) Briggs, class of 1965. Her class
with be noting its 50-year anniversary the same weekend. Other PHS classes, including ’55, are doing the same and others
are encouraged to plan gatherings of their own.
The festivities will begin on Friday evening, Sept. 4, with an early-evening social at the FDES Hall hosted by the
Patterson Lions Club. That will be followed by a trip across the street to Patterson Community Stadium where classes will
be recognized between the junior varsity and varsity football games, followed by the singing of the school song. The
Tigers will be hosting Ripon that night.
The Historical Society will have numerous high school displays on exhibit in classrooms and the PHS gym. Several
items will date from 1915 including a photo of the first building under construction. It was razed in 1975 and a video of
that demolition will be shown.
Volunteers will be needed to move the displays from the museum to the high school, and then return them on the
holiday weekend.
Saturday’s schedule has yet to be formalized, but will include a golf tournament at Diablo Grande, historical displays
at the school, a food court over the lunch hour, tours of the campus led by students, and the opening of a time capsule. The
agenda will include plenty of time for socializing. The day will end with a dinner, probably held outside.
Sunday and Monday of the three-day weekend are set aside for socializing.
Advance reservations will be required for some activities including the golfing and Saturday dinner. Watch for future
announcements in upcoming issues of Spokes, or visit the websites of the celebration, Patterson Unified School District,
or the Patterson Irrigator.
2014 a Record-setter At Our Museum
Traffic through our downtown museum set an all-time high in 2014, bolstered by two major events.
The official count for the year was 2585 visitors, up from the previous high of 2207 recorded in 2013. This despite the
museum being closed for much of the fall and early winter months.
Two major downtown events – our Apricot Fiesta and the Christmas opening in early December – accounted for over
three-fourths of the traffic. The Fiesta had a record 1110 visitors and the Christmas event 874, also a record.
Curator Ron Swift is again seeking docents to open the museum on Monday through Saturday afternoons. The hours
will be 2-4 p.m. to accommodate students coming from school.
“Much of our walk-in traffic is during these hours,” Swift noted. The Saturday hours are hoped to draw out-oftowners, as brochures will be left at the Best Western Villa Del Lago hotel where a Patterson visitors’ center is being
established.
“No more than half an hour of docent training is necessary,” Swift explained. “Our displays are well-marked and
Patterson’s rich history is shown in photos.”
The museum does have special items for sale, and prices may soon be dropped to reduce the inventory. Members will
have the first opportunity to purchase these items.
Call to Reserve Museum Tours
Groups of all ages and sizes are invited to tour our downtown museum. They may do so by calling Tour Director Bob
Kimball (892-8664) or Curator Ron Swift (892-6355).
Several school classes descended on the museum this past year, along with several youth groups. In the month of
March a Cub Scout is scheduled, and in July a nationwide group of educators who will be attending an institute here in
Patterson will receive a special tour.

National History Day on Feb. 28 was a big event at Creekside Middle School when
students from around the county, most from Patterson and Newman, competed in
six divisions from exhibits to drama and video. They ranged from fourth graders
to seniors. The Patterson Unified School District hosted the event, which served as
the county finals. The six division winners are now eligible for state competition. A
featured guest was 95-year-old Lesley Williams, a World War II pilot and captain
in the famed Tuskegee Airman squadron of the Army Air Corps shown here being
greeted by Patterson Mayor Luis Molina. He is a Patterson resident and was
accompanied by his daughter, Penny Williams of Newman. Patterson Township
Historical Society officers Carol Scoles and Faye Hill were on hand to display both
the Lincoln Document of the Rancho del Puerto land grant and the Grayson Hotel
Registry of 1876-81 which proved to be popular with the students.

Cripe Barber Pole Added to Museum
A major addition to our museum was added recently when Rodger Cripe donated a barber pole used years
ago by his family. Rodger, a society member who lives in Murphys, had the glass replaced before Ronald
Rogers installed the revolving lighted pole just inside the museum’s east door. It is being examined by museum
curator Ron Swift. The original Cripe shop was located on South Third Street and was owned by Simon Cripe,
Rodger’s grandfather. Simon is pictured standing next to the pole in an old society photograph. By then he had
a jewelry store on Del Puerto Avenue and his brother Roy had taken over the shop. Rodger’s father Clyde was
the last of the family’s barbers, taking over the shop from Roy in the 1950s. The shop was forced to relocate
after a major South Third Street fire in 1964 caused water damage.
