Welcome to the 16th ISBE Congress
at the University of Exeter!
We are proud to welcome you to five days of presentations spanning the
full spectrum of current research effort in behavioural ecology, along with
a chance to forge new relationships and catch up with old friends. Thanks
to a host of excellent abstract submissions, ISBE 2016 looks to be one of the
most diverse and best attended ISBE congresses ever! How better to celebrate
the 30th anniversary of our society and underline how greatly exaggerated
the reports of ‘the death of behavioural ecology’ as a discipline have been
since ISBE 1992 in Princeton? Indeed, over the last decade the University
of Exeter has invested significantly in accumulating what is arguably the
largest collection of behavioural ecologists in the world as an integral part of
its commitment to pursuing world class research that has a positive global
impact and tackles the challenges of the 21st Century. So we feel privileged
to welcome you all to our Streatham Campus, one of the most beautiful
in the UK, with its unique environment of lakes, parkland, woodland and
gardens to enjoy when you are not riveted to the scientific smorgasbord on
offer! There may even be some decent partying along the way.

Sustainability
Event Exeter’s unique portfolio of venues and services are fully integrated within the University of
Exeter’s sustainability policy and strategies.
The information desk is located in the ISBE congress marquee on the Great Hall Piazza
Reducing our Environmental Impact
In particular, Event Exeter encourages visitors to travel to the campuses by public transport or by car
sharing. For events taking place in our venues, we like to draw attention to our recycling facilities and
also energy saving practices.
We are always looking for ways of reducing our carbon footprint and paper use and recently introduced
an app providing guests with visitor information, reducing the need for printed materials.
We also encourage guests to only request for their towels to be laundered when needed.

We provide on a regular basis hearing loops, vibrating alarm pillows in bedrooms and also welcome

Our Catering Department follow a Sustainable Food Policy which specifically aims to increase the range
of food offered from sustainable resources, promote an ethos of buying from local suppliers and ensure
that sustainability criteria is included in supplier specifications and contract awards.
In 2015, the team were Shortlisted for the National Footprint Awards in the Food Waste reduction
category.
The University is also committed to supporting, using and promoting Fairtrade products within all the
retail and catering outlets on campus and have a Fairtrade policy to drive this forward.
Recycling, Reusing and Energy Management
The University has numerous resources available to ensure that as a business we recycle as much as
possible (currently 43% of our waste) and dispose responsibly of the items we cannot.
The University actively works towards reducing energy consumption and has ambitious targets to do so.
For further information and policy documents, please visit the University of Exeter’s Sustainability
webpages.
All buildings on campus have been reviewed with regards to accessibility and have been updated to
comply with the Disability Discrimination Act. Although rare, where full access can not be offered, this

Madeleine Beekman
University of Sydney
I am a professor in Behavioural Ecology at the University
of Sydney. I have always been fascinated by insects in
general and social insects in particular. I did my PhD at the
University of Amsterdam on bumblebees. After finishing
my PhD in 1998 I moved to the University of Sheffield,
where I worked both on honeybees and ants, a ‘tradition’
I maintained after my move to the University of Sydney
in 2001. Currently my main honeybee research interests
are conflict and cooperation in honeybee colonies and the
evolution of virulence of honeybee RNA viruses. For more
information about my lab and the research the lab is involved
with, see http://sydney.edu.au/science/biology/socialinsects/

Tim Clutton-Brock is a Director of Research in the
Zoology Department at the University of Cambridge. His
research has investigated the evolution of reproductive
strategies, breeding systems and societies, the operation of
natural and sexual selection and the regulation of animal
populations. He has worked primarily with long-term
studies of mammals, including red deer, Soay sheep and
meerkats. His recent book (Mammal Societies: Wiley
Blackwell) synthesizes the results of recent research on social
behaviour in mammals and his current research focuses
on the evolutionary causes and ecological consequences of
cooperative breeding in animal societies.
Cooperative breeding in mammals
Why I study social insects
Mammals provide examples of some of the most highly developed cooperative breeding systems found in
vertebrates. Their initial evolution in mammals has been confined to monogamous, litter-bearing species
and is associated with arid environments. Studies of cooperative mammals show that non-breeding
helpers (which are usually closely related to the young they rear) make important contributions to
growth and survival in juveniles and also to the frequency with which dominant females breed and that
they gain direct and indirect fitness benefits by this. Cooperative breeding has important effects on the
operation of selection and the reproductive adaptations of both sexes. Unlike eusocial insects, there
is no firm evidence of the evolution of caste systems in any cooperative mammal: instead cooperative
mammals show unusual plasticity in growth and development, responding both to opportunities to breed
and to threats to their own chances of acquiring breeding positions by increasing their rate of growth.
In Virgil’s poem The Georgics, worker bees are described as happily sacrificing their reproductive
prerogatives in order to joyfully labour in the service of their colony and monarch. This view has held
sway for the greater part of history, until the publication of Hamilton’s inclusive fitness theory. Although
Hamilton’s work initially explained how non-reproductive workers in insect colonies could evolve,
Darwin’s ‘one special difficulty’, his gene-focused explanation also predicts conflict. So, we can view
an insect colony both as a harmonious, xenophobic society in which workers selflessly sacrifice their
reproductive opportunities in order to serve their queen and as a battlefield, with selfish individuals
pursuing their own interests. Which angle is most appropriate depends on the exact question one wants
to ask. I study honeybees to ask questions about how a collective makes decisions but also to elucidate
when conflict is expected and means to avoid conflict.

B. Rosemary Grant
Princeton University
Professor emeritus in animal ecology at the Department of
Biology and Environment, University of Gothenburg. PhD on
behavior and ecology of skuas, inspired by Tinbergen’s work on
gulls. Interest in ornament evolution, mate choice and sexual
selection born during fieldwork on skuas, with tail ornaments
used in courtship. Main research interests: evolutionary and
behavioral ecology, field studies and modeling of selection and
evolution of breeding systems and reproductive tactics.
Rosemary Grant is Research Scholar and Professor Emerita
at Princeton University. She received her training at
Edinburgh University and Uppsala University. Together with
her husband Peter Grant she has been studying Darwin’s
finches on the Galápagos Islands since 1973. The fieldwork is
designed to understand the causes of an adaptive radiation. It
combines analyses of archipelago-wide patterns of evolution
with detailed investigations on two islands, Genovesa and
Daphne. Her work integrates ecology, behavior and genetics.
The research has been published in three books, most
recently “How and Why Species Multiply” (2008) and “40
years of Evolution” (2014).
Conspecific brood parasitism and sociality
Evolution of Darwin’s Finches: integrating Behaviour, Ecology and Genetics
Most known alternative reproductive tactics are male, but conspecific brood parasitism (CBP) is a
common female tactic in many egg-tending animals, from insects to birds. Some females (parasites)
lay eggs in the nests of other females (hosts) of the same species, which alone take care of and raise
the joint brood, to the benefit of the parasite and cost of the host. CBP is complex and ranges from
aggressively resisted exploitation to parasite nest takeover and potential kin selection favoring acceptance
of related parasites. It involves sophisticated behavior in parasites and counter-measures in hosts, and
its success may be frequency-dependent, influencing population dynamics. CBP can greatly increase
the reproductive success of females that combine parasitism with a clutch of their own. In some insects
and birds CBP involves interactions among relatives, with consequences for inclusive fitness of host and
parasite. Focusing on female-philopatric waterfowl I review brood-parasitic tactics and evidence of kin
discrimination, cooperation and sociality. In waterfowl host and parasite females are often related, and
theory and field results suggest that both can gain inclusive fitness. The largest gains are possible through
increased parasite reproduction, but increased survival of a parasite that avoids risky nesting can also be
important. There is evidence of advanced kin interactions and female sociality bordering on cooperative
breeding in some long-lived species, but more comprehensive long-terms studies of marked individuals
of several generations and known relatedness are needed for critical testing.
Since Darwin’s time insights from the fields of behavior, ecology and genetics have illuminated the
process of speciation. In this talk I will highlight our recent discoveries of evolution in Darwin’s finch
populations in the Galápagos archipelago. Field studies of the behavior of individuals and the ecology of
populations reveal how the species are reproductively and ecologically isolated. Molecular genetics has
added a new dimension to this understanding by providing genomic detail of evolution in contemporary
as well as historical populations. By integrating these disciplines we have revealed three processes of
speciation, provided reasons for changes in evolutionary trajectories and identified the important causal
factors. I will conclude with our exciting discovery of the formation of a new lineage and a discussion of
the relevance of these findings to other studies.

Hopi Hoekstra
Harvard University
Trevor Price is a Professor in the Department of Ecology &
Evolution at the University of Chicago. The current focus
of his research is determinants of species diversity in birds
found along the Himalayas, notably the question of why
there are twice as many species in the eastern Himalayas
as the west. He is conducting extensive field studies of the
ecology, abundance, elevational, and latitudinal distribution
of birds and constructing phylogenetic relationships
using molecular data. The combination of phylogenetic
and ecological work will be used to distinguish so-called
ecological and historical explanations for the gradient in
species diversity.
Hopi Hoekstra is the Alexander Agassiz Professor of
Zoology and the Curator of Mammals in the Museum
of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University. She is
also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator.
Her research focuses on uncovering the genetic basis of
adaptation in wild mice. She received her B.A. from UC
Berkeley and her Ph.D. from the University of Washington.
She has received numerous accolades including awards
from the American Society of Naturalists and the Beckman
Foundation, and most recently, the Lounsbery Medal from
the National Academy of Sciences. In 2016, she was elected
as a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Animal colours, colour vision, and sensory drive
Digging for genes that contribute to behavioral evolution
In sensory biology, differences among animals in the way they perceive colour have often been attributed
to effects of the environment, including the spectra of incident light and the colour of relevant objects,
such as prey. On the other hand, in many models of sexual selection, colour and colour perception
co-evolve, potentially leading to divergence even in identical environments. Collaborator Natasha Bloch
and I compared the bright coloured, sexually dimorphic New World warblers with their ecological
counterparts, the dull coloured, monomorphic, Old World warblers. Here, I review the current status of
our understanding of avian colour vision and summarize evidence, based on analysis of visual pigments,
that colour and colour perception have co-evolved in the New World warblers. In the future an improved
understanding of the mechanisms of colour vision will importantly increase our understanding of how
the great diversity of animal colours has been generated.
Understanding which genes affect behavior, and how the resultant proteins work in the brain, remains
a major challenge in biology. To address this goal, we are capitalizing on natural variation in behavior
within and between species of deer mice (genus Peromyscus). In this talk, I will focus on an innate
behavior, burrowing, which produces an intriguing and complex animal architecture. I will present
data from both the lab and the field that allow us a first glimpse into the genetics and neurobiology of
behavioral evolution.

Naomi Pierce
Harvard University
Naomi Pierce is the Hessel Professor of Biology at Harvard
University. She is interested in the behavioral ecology of
species interactions, and how parasitisms and mutualisms
influence evolutionary trajectories of each partner. Her
work ranges from field studies of ants and their symbionts,
to genetic analyses of plants, pathogens and insects. Pierce
and her students have reconstructed molecular phylogenies
of ants, bees and butterflies, and use these to study life
history evolution. She is a member of National Geographic’s
Committee for Research and Exploration, and has received
honors such as a MacArthur Fellowship and the 2016 E.O.
Wilson Naturalist Award.
Ant symbioses: from parasitism to mutualism
Ants play a central role in shaping terrestrial ecosystems, and have repeatedly evolved complex
relationships with other organisms, including insects, plants and microbes. These interactions range from
parasitisms to mutualisms. I will discuss three examples: the association between ants and caterpillars
of butterflies in the family Lycaenidae, the interaction between ants and their gut microbiota, and the
relationship between ants and ant plants found on the savannahs of East Africa. Collectively, these
interactions illustrate how symbiosis can be a creative force in facilitating adaptive radiation of novel
ecological niches, and at the same time pose constraints on the evolution of both partners through the
need to coordinate opportunities for interaction as well as through the population consequences of
increased specialization.
