Say “No” to Ethanol
I’m an Ol’ Skool Rodz
subscriber. I just suggested to
the person in charge of the SLC
Autorama that they put a petition
at the front door for people to sign
to ask our representatives to not
vote for E15.
Maybe you could, through your
editorial column, ask other sponsors to do the same thing. Plenty of
car guys attend these events and it
would hopefully show large support
against this terrible idea. Just a
thought. Thanks for listening.

Hi Jay,
Most promoters would not be likely
to do that, especially if they had to come
up with their own petition, though some
might provide a space for a volunteer
group (area hot rod club, state street rod
association, etc.). The more likely help for
that effort would come from an exhibitor
at the show (local speed shop, etc.). That’s
my opinion anyway.
Editorially, we have always lobbied
against ethanol, as you know, and will
continue to do so. We urge you and all of
our readers to contact your U.S. senators
and representatives and ask them to
not support any expansion of ethanol
standards. Not only is ethanol harmful
to engines and fuel systems, but corn
farmers in the Midwest receive huge
taxpayer-funded subsidies to make the
cost of ethanol lower, but it reduces the
amount of corn available for livestock feed
and for human food consumption. If left
to its own free-market, ethanol would be
impractical. Taxpayers are subsidizing a
political agenda. – Ed.
I’m a car guy with a garage
full; however, this is about Axle
Idzardi’s musical taste and, oh
yeah, a motorcycle. Well, nearly; the
attached photo shows the ‘72 Harley
Davidson golf cart rescued from a
pasture, refurbished, and modified
into a mobile public address system
for our annual car show (http://
mainstreetshowandshine.com/
home/) in Enterprise, Oregon. Added
power includes a 700-watt power
amplifier, four 30-watt speakers,
mixer, MP3 player, and cordless
microphone system.
What we lack is the outstanding rockabilly music Axle brings to
memory in the April/May 2016 issue of Ol’ Skool Rodz. How about he
records his collection on CDs? I’ll
purchase them for our use and I’m
sure there are many subscribers
out there who will do the same!
We plug this mobile PA
system into stationary speakers
attached to decorative streetlights
all along our Main Street; his music will provide the perfect background during our annual event!
In fact, we invite all of you to join
us in August.

Welcome to the T&A Issue
ou’ve likely noticed that all
of the feature cars in this
issue are hot rods based
either on Ford’s Model T or Model
A. We did our first “T&A Issue” way
back in 2008. That was Ol’ Skool Rodz
issue #29 and we did one annually for
a few years, then took a couple years
off that theme. Having once again
gathered a plethora of cool Model T
and Model A rod features, we decided
it was time to do another issue full of
America’s favorite hot rods. And these
come from all over the country, too, so
that’s no exaggeration.
There’s a bonus in this issue for
you T&A lovers, too, in that we have
two tech articles devoted to Model A
rods. The shapes and layouts of stock
Model T and Model A coupes and sedans being similar, those tech articles
could easily be applied to Model Ts as
well (and many other 1920s and early
1930s brands since they had similar
styles and components).
As we mentioned in our first T&A
Issue, it’s no wonder that Model T and
Model A cars are so popular as hot rod
fodder. Between the two models, Ford
Motor Company cranked out twenty
million! There were fifteen million
Model Ts built between 1908 and 1927,
and then five million Model As rolled
off the assembly lines from 1928 to
1931. That’s a lot of cars over 24 model
years! Even though the last Model A
was produced 85 years ago, we’d wager
that everyone reading this magazine
knows where at least one is in your
hometown right now.
It’s a long-standing testament
to the ingenuity of hot rodders that
there are so many hot rods made from
similar base cars, and yet the final hot
rod products are so different. Engine
choices abound, too. Our nine feature
cars offer six different power plants:
small block Chevy and Ford flathead,
of course, but also an Oldsmobile V8,
a Buick Nailhead, a Pinto 4-cylinder,
and even a Cummins diesel! All of
them offer tons of power and torque,
putting the “hot” in hot rod.
We’re always happy to see
someone do something different as

opposed to copying another guy’s car
and we’ll be the first to give proper
kudos to our readers, who also
build the cars we feature. “Same ol’,
same ol’” doesn’t seem to be in your
vocabulary and that’s what keeps Ol’
Skool Rodz (and Car Kulture DeLuxe)
going. Cars built by people with
imagination (in other words, you) are
what we like to see and we know that
our readers do, too, so that’s what we’ll
keep throwing your way.
EPA strikes again
We recently received a warning
e-mail from SEMA that the EPA
is up to its sneaky tricks again, this
time attempting to prevent converting
street cars to race cars. Quoting the
SEMA message:
“The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a regulation to prohibit conversion of vehicles originally designed for on-road use
into race cars. The regulation would
also make the sale of certain products
for use on such vehicles illegal. The
proposed regulation was contained
within a non-related proposed regulation entitled ‘Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Fuel Efficiency Standards
for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Engines
and Vehicles—Phase 2.’
“The regulation would impact
all vehicle types, including the
sports cars, sedans and hatchbacks
commonly converted strictly for use
at the track. While the Clean Air
Act prohibits certain modifications
to motor vehicles, it is clear that
vehicles built or modified for racing,
and not used on the streets, are not
the ‘motor vehicles’ that Congress
intended to regulate.
“’This proposed regulation
represents overreaching by the
agency, runs contrary to the law
and defies decades of racing activity
where EPA has acknowledged and
allowed conversion of vehicles,’ said
SEMA President and CEO Chris
Kersting. ‘Congress did not intend the
original Clean Air Act to extend to
vehicles modified for racing and has
re-enforced that intent on more than
one occasion.’
“SEMA
submitted
comments in
opposition to the
regulation and
met with the

EPA to confirm
the agency’s intentions. The EPA
indicated that the regulation would
prohibit conversion of vehicles into
race cars and make the sale of certain
emissions-related parts for use on
converted vehicles illegal. Working
with other affected organizations,
including those representing legions
of professional and hobbyist racers
and fans, SEMA will continue to
oppose the regulation through the
administrative process and will seek
congressional support and judicial
intervention as necessary.
“The EPA has indicated it
expects to publish final regulations by
July 2016.”
Even if you’re not a racer, this
message should send up red flags
coated in fireworks. Look at the second
quoted sentence: “The regulation
would also make the sale of certain
products for use on such vehicles
illegal.” That group of products
would surely include such items as
aftermarket intake manifolds and
carburetors, ignition systems, exhaust
headers and mufflers, and knowing the
EPA’s penchant for overreach, would
likely extend to non-standard spark
plugs and air filters. Also note it was
included in a non-related regulation.
And if you think they’re likely to let
that regulation pass and be content
with it only applying to race cars, then
you and your pink unicorn covered
in rainbow fairy dust should be very
happy together, riding side-by-side in
your plug-in hybrid.
Again, we urge you to keep
informed about what the government
and its alphabet-named agencies are
up to. They think you’re weird and
probably un-American for modifying
and driving old cars. Know where your
elected representatives stand on these
issues, and most importantly, tell them
where you stand. This is an election
year and you’re the boss. Act like it.

riving between Fremont, Nebraska (fiancée), Omaha (art
school), work (Baker’s Supermarkets) and home (to Iowa), my
’57 Chevy’s six burned lots of 20-cent
quarts of oil. Racing (and winning 90%
of them) for extra “beer money” wore
it out. Dad found a “newer car” for me,
so younger brother Dan would get my
’57. Since I was in school, he’d foot
the bill, but I worked - grocery store
- 72nd and Maple for rent and gas. I
walked to school from my downtown
apartment but drove to work. Omaha’s
Radial Highway to Maple - four-lane
in stretches, curves, residential areas
and woods. Speed limit varied, so did
traffic lights.
March, 1964, the finned 1959 Bel
Air was mine - silver blue, blue interior, three-speed, 348”/4 barrel/dual
exhausts. I was shocked. Dad hated big
engines but he’d bought it wrecked, replaced the front clip, painted to match.
I worked Monday-Thursday
4:30-9:30, weekends off. One Friday
night in May we inventoried, then
went for pizza after; I headed
downtown about 11:30.
A green 1963 Ford Galaxie pulled
alongside at a traffic light. Four guys
inside, windows down, yelling, laughing. I ignored them until a beer bottle
banged across my Chevy’s hood.
“Oh, sorry, farm boy. Dad’s
car? Don’t ‘spose he’d let you race
it. Naw, Iowa farmers don’t know
how, right, dope?”
Say no to four big guys? Wrong
odds but I wasn’t intimidated by a
race. My 348 was a brute, already
won many stoplight contests, just
didn’t want to get beat up. I rapped
the engine, clutched it - car lurched.
Big guy passenger’s side grinned, two
teeth missing.
No idea of the Ford’s engine or
tranny, but four guys weighed more
than me; my advantage. The light
changed. My ’59 leapt ahead of the Galaxie. He flogged it to catch. I slammed
second, jumped a fender ahead,
screamed through the block, past the
still green light. Halfway into the next,

I lifted and he shot by. Stoplight turned
red. I saw it but he worried about me
leading and didn’t see it until the last
minute, slammed on the binders, slid
the Galaxie sideways. I approached
slowly, not knowing what to expect.
“That’s one, farm boy,” came from
inside the car. “We’ll go again.”
“No,” I said. “Pushing my luck.”
“Damn right,” he yelled. “You
don’t go again, I’m gonna push your
face around.”
Time to disappear. Quickest way
out? One more stoplight, then the road
curved at 53rd to 52nd. Hang a right,
take Miami to Blondo or Dodge. Ford
Boy was in the left lane, wouldn’t expect me to turn. He’d go straight, I’d get
out alive.
“Your P.O.S. ready?” he yelled.
I tapped the throttle, slipped the
clutch up. Probably thinks my win was
luck, but I’m leaving this race. The
yellow blinked. I honked. Ford Boy
looked. The light went green, I flipped
him off, dropped the clutch, got half a
car on him. Man, was he pissed! Heard
him coming as I slammed second,
barked the tires. I banged across 53rd.
Ford Boy hung onto my rear quarter.
I lifted, the Galaxie flew by just as a
beer bottle streaked out his window. I
slammed on the brakes,’59 nose-dived,
bottle sailed past. I cranked the steering wheel right and poured my Bel Air
onto 52nd. His tires squealed getting
that Galaxie stopped; knew he wanted
to beat me up and then let his pals
have a go!
I was scared, flew around the corner, wasn’t more than two tires on the
ground. I straightened the car, killed
the headlights, hammered through an
intersection, felt a “snap” in the steering
wheel. I was rolling about 60, didn’t need
Ford Boy to see where I’d gone. Something popped again, louder. The wheel
jerked in my hands, the driver’s side
slammed concrete, hard, sparks flew!
Screeching and grinding, the wheel
wasn’t steering anymore and I headed
for a curb. Fortunately, no cars parked
there. I banged up onto someone’s lawn,
scraped across a sidewalk, just missed
an evergreen tree and slid into a drive-
way. Stopped four feet in front of a porch.
Shaking, I looked for Ford Boy. Not
seeing lights, I got out to survey. I stood
there trying to figure out why my wheel/
tire were at a strange angle when headlights illuminated the driveway.
Oh damn! I ducked. They found me.
A car idled, didn’t sound like
Ford Boy’s. I peeked over the fender, a
man stood in the glow. “What the hell
you doing?” It wasn’t Ford Boy or his
cronies. Turned out to be the house
owner, George.
I stood up. “Think I busted a
ball joint.”
He grabbed a flashlight, shined it
behind the ’59, onto the trail I’d left.
“You’re damned lucky.
Missed that tree and my house.”
He illuminated the driver’s side. I
expected the worse. No damage to the
fender but the pan below the bumper
was history. He asked where I was
headed, answered “home, from work,
at Baker’s.”
“Need to make a phone call?”
he asked.
I explained Dad was in Iowa and
it would be a long-distance call.
“Well, your car isn’t going
anywhere. I’ll give you a ride
downtown. You can phone from there.
Come up tomorrow, get the car.”
I agreed. Back in those days, an
offer like that was of genuine concern.
On the way I watched for Ford Boy and
his pals. Figured they’d park and wait
for me but never saw them. I got to my
apartment about 1:00 AM.
Didn’t call Dad, figured the car
and I were safe from Ford Boy. I called
in the morning. Dad showed up early
afternoon with parts and tools. I didn’t
tell him how the ball joint came to
break; he wouldn’t have believed I
made a square corner in that huge ‘59
at 100 MPH anyway.
We pulled the A-arm in George’s
driveway, went to the Chevy garage.
Late that afternoon, we washed up in
George’s kitchen. Dad offered to pay
for his lawn, but he wouldn’t accept
any money. After all, “it was just an
accident. No one got hurt.” He didn’t
know how correct he was!

I
Deuce Do-Over
n past articles I have talked
about my involvement in the early
resurgence of the nostalgic rod
and custom scene with the younger
generation. In the late 1980s, I was one
of a handful of youngsters that drove
pre-1960s American made iron, was
a greaser, and part of the rockabilly
scene. I had a canary yellow ‘55 Chevy
and a gloss black ‘56 Chevy stepside
short bed pickup.
Other guys in the scene were
Jim Bouchard with his ‘46 Ford
business coupe, Jeff Vodden with a
‘56 Chevy, Derek Coon with all of his
‘50s Caddys, and the guys in Orange
County, California, with their cool
cars: Rudy Rodriguez and his Olds
powered yellow ‘34 coupe, Phil Zasakis
and his ‘34 coupe, Model A coupe,
and “Rockabilly Boogie,” a Model
A roadster Bonneville lakes racer,
and Bret Degroot with his chopped
Shoebox named “Southern Comfort.”
At any given rockabilly show, all
of these cars could be seen out in the
parking lot. Back then, this was so
underground that most never knew we
existed! The only way you’d know is if
you were into the rockabilly or blues
scene, or frequented the bi-monthly
Pomona collector car swap meet.

By the early 1990s, more guys
were getting into classic cars, rods,
customs, and rockabilly music,
primarily because they weren’t old
enough to get into it in the ‘80s.
With the mutual interests, and more
events happening, it seemed to bring
people together more often. Southern
California was ground zero for
everything cool. We had overall great
year ‘round weather, events happening
practically every week, and friends
(new and old) started really getting into
buying parts, and building pre-war hot
rods. While the average guy or gal in
the music scene was driving around
in classic late ‘50s American iron, we
were building hot rods in our limited
spaced garages and backyards. This
was pre-internet, during the modern
billet high tech street rod world, so the
nostalgia bug had not caught on like it
has today.
Going to swap meets was like
Christmas for my pals and me. No one
wanted Stromberg carbs, old racing
slicks, Metalflake steering wheels,
and shift knobs. And absolutely no
one was into vintage speed equipment
for Pontiacs, Caddys, Oldsmobiles, or
flatheads. We would travel hundreds of
miles to attend swap meets in remote
areas, and literally come back with
truck loads full of bodies, frames,
axles, wishbones, vintage hot rod
magazines, carbs, grilles, dashboards,
finned valve covers, wheels, and more.
Old timers got a kick out of seeing
us with cuffed jeans, vintage wool car
club jackets, ducktails, and engineer
boots. Some of these guys would even
give us parts so long as we “put them to
good use,” and we definitely did!
By the mid-1990s I had bought,
built, and flipped so many cars that
my backyard was a revolving door
of people and cars going in and out.
What started as a ‘56 Chevy pickup,
turned into a ‘56 F100, that turned in
to a ‘36 Ford pickup, then a ‘55 Ford
Customline, and a Deuce 5-window.
At one point I sold off most of
everything to acquire yet another
Deuce 5-window. That one for the most
part was turnkey, until the small block
Chevy blew. It was at that point that
I decided to take the car completely
apart and make it mine, putting my
own personality to the car.
The car was painted medium
blue metallic and white pinstriping
was added. All mounts were ground
off and I made new mounts. The
frame was then painted body color,
medium blue metallic. I installed a
450 horsepower Pontiac engine with
10.5:1 compression, forged pistons,
high lift Ram Air IV cam, 1.65:1 ratio
rocker arms, internals all balanced,
ported heads, tri-power, dual point
ignition, custom fabricated 4-tube
headers exiting outward, a closeratio Muncie 4-speed with 2.20:1 first
gear, and a 9-inch Ford rear with 4.11
gears and posi-traction. I added B.F.
Goodrich Silvertown whitewalls and
vintage whitewall slicks, and mounted
them on chrome reversed wheels.
I had the upholstery done in blue
metalflake (zodiac) tuck-n-roll with
pearl white. A blue metalflake shifter
knob, floor mats, and Ansen steering
wheel were installed, and lastly, a
vintage California license plate with
‘62 tags, and a plate frame with the
word “Riverside” placed out back. All
combined, this gave my Deuce an early
1960s look. At a time when so many of
the guys were building black primered
rods with red wheels and
whitewalls, I decided to go the
complete opposite.
I mention everything
above because It was a huge
part of my life, and still is.
I ended up selling the blue
Deuce back in 2002, and
have missed the car ever since. But,
I have great news. I have recently reacquired the car and it’s back in my
garage after all those years. Time has
aged the car a little, so the decision has
been made to blow the car completely
apart this spring and summer, and
it will debut inside the Suede Palace
building at the Grand National
Roadster Show 2017! Maybe you’ll
attend next year, see my ol’ Deuce,
check out the bands, have an ice cold
beer, and hang out.

Australia’s
Mud Run

T
he Mud Run was never
supposed to get this big. It all
started seven years ago in a
field on Australia’s east coast with five
mates trying to get their cars sideways.
They were the Devils, a hot rod club
that’s small in numbers but big in skill
and experience. Their leader is Tony
Webster, known as “Webby,” and he’s
a veteran Australian hot rodder with a
list of national car building awards as
long as his sunburnt arms.
Webby had read about the Jalopy
Showdown in American magazines
like this one and reckoned something
like that should be done here in
Australia. His mate’s field would be the
perfect place to hold it.

Over time, the Mud Run became
the worst-kept secret on the rodding
calendar, with more people showing
up each year until it outgrew the field
and moved to a showground in the
country town of Gresford. This year
more than 900 people rolled through
the front gates in a line of rods and
customs that snaked all the way out
of town.
Two Sydney clubs, the Weirdos
and the Wanderers, arrived with an
array of tasty machines including a
pair of ‘30 Model As, one severely
chopped and channeled in orange
flake with a GM Holden 308 V8; the
other peppermint green and flathead
powered. Local troublemakers, the
Death Dodgers, turned up in force with
a 1949 Morris commercial running a
307 small block Chevy, a ‘52 Nash, and
a Holden FB ute.
The first year the Mud Run was
held here the place felt too big; this
year it was bursting at the seams with
tents and caravans covering every
inch of ground and well over 500 rods
and customs parked between them
and around the arena. It’s all about
the arena. The town holds its rodeo
here each year but a week beforehand,
the Mud Run beasts ride into town to
tear it up.
There are awards to be won, of
course. For the girls, there’s the Muddy
Lady bowling pin bike trophy and the
Drive-It-With-More-Skill-Than-A
Man-Ever-Will trophy. For the guys,
there are the Drive it - and Ride It Like
You Stole It trophies. But being the
Mud Run, the winners are never bigbuck showcars; instead, homemade
monsters are rewarded here.
This year’s Mud Run fell on the
fourth of July and so there was an
American theme with their very
own Uncle Sam. But it’s always an
American theme with hot rodding. We
fell in love with your American cars
and culture and it became a way of
life for us but it has taken on its own
Australian flavor.
It’s tradition now to end the Mud
Run with the jalopy race. And as the
sun dipped below the hills and the
Flattrakkers’ rockabilly tunes floated
through the night air, the jalopies slid
out onto the muddy track to remind us
of how hot rodding all began.

Bobby Hughes’ 1930 Ford Pickup
There’s a fairly new television show called Vegas Rat Rods
airing on the Discovery Channel. It’s based in Las Vegas,
Nevada, at a shop called Welder Up. There they build
some of the wildest rat rods known in the car scene.
W
elder Up is not your
average car customizing
shop. Owner Steve
Darnell along, with his crew Travis
“Von” Deeter, Justin Kramer, and
Danny Coggins are four out of six

masterminds behind the creative
mind-blowing creations made on the
TV show.
Car owner Bobby Hughes decided
to have Welder Up build his creative
custom copper-accented rat rod pickup
you see here on these pages. The team
at Welder Up stepped up big time
and set the bar higher in the rat rod
scene. It is equipped with more copper
accents than a metal shop supplier
would have on hand.
Power comes in the form of a 2013
Cummins twin turbo 6-cylinder diesel
engine that is rated at 400 horsepower.
This 1930 Ford pours more black
smoke out of the turbo exhaust pipe
than an old fashioned locomotive. The
motor was built by engine specialist
Industrial Injection, and allows the
twin turbos to collaborate together
with an even flow. Most of the engine
parts were either copper covered or
blacked out.
The frame was custom built out of
hammered steel. Dropping the Copper
Rod to the ground is a set of airbags
to adjust the desired ride height
needed for your daily struggles on the
road ways. Tying in the flow of the
copper style on the doors, the shop’s
“Welderup” logo was painted onto
them. While painter Travis Von Deeter
decided to follow the copper theme of
the rat rod with a paint choice, a rusty
patina that was fitting for the truck.
Traveling into the interior, you
will see leather bucket seats along with
finished wood trim center console and
matching wood flooring panels.
Welder Up spent numerous
painstaking hours on this unique Ford
pickup. You can see all of the talented
work and creativity that they used to
master this rod. Shop owner Steve
Darnell is a mastermind and he had a
big part in this build, along with help
from the whole crew at his shop.
Bobby must have had a crystal
ball looking into the future because
everyone involved in the Copper Rod
build nailed it on first try.

Moon Equipped
nown as a leading brand
for the global exchange
of hopped-up car kulture,
Mooneyes and their big google-eyed
logo are part of the history of the hot
rod sport. From Dean Moon’s humble
beginnings at 10820 S. Norwalk
Blvd. in Santa Fe Springs, California
(still the Mooneyes USA HQ) to the
current company that spans two
continents (USA/Japan) helmed by
Shige Suganuma and Chico Kodama,
Mooneyes continually offers their
support to a worldwide fan base of
hot rodders and kustom kulture
enthusiasts. Consequentially, their
little “pinstripers’ holiday panel jam”
has morphed into a monster and we
love it!
A little Moon history
Dean Moon (1927-1987) grew up in
Norwalk, California, and was immersed
in dry lakes racing from his youth. His
father owned a go-cart track called
“Moonza” (a pun on Monza) and also the
Moon Café (now located in Japan).
Dean was an innovator of speed
equipment and in 1950 founded Moon
Speed Equipment to improve the
quality and safety of racing products.
His most popular items were auxiliary
fuel tanks (Moon Tanks), spun
aluminum wheel covers (Moon Discs)
and a foot shaped throttle pedal. His
bright yellow drag cars were used as
models for Hot Wheels and Revell
and he was an original member of
an association for speed equipment
manufacturers. He later purchased
Potvin Company (ignitions/camshafts/
blower drives), fitted the 429 race
engine to the Batmobile and a Ford
V8 motor and trans to Carroll Shelby’s
first US based AC Shelby Cobra.
In the 1990s, Shige Suganuma, a
close friend of the Moon family and a
Moon parts dealer in Japan, acquired
the company and rebranded Mooneyes USA/JAPAN to an international
market, based on the traditions of the
company. Needless to say, it’s a smashing success.

In the United States, a traditional
rodder’s Christmas is not the same

without attendance at the Mooneyes
Xmas party (either USA or Japan, or
both.) Each year the entire Mooneyes
staff tirelessly works to express their
gratitude and love for the sport of hot
rodding by inviting thousands of their
closest friends to celebrate the holidays
with them.
As hosts, Mooneyes elevates the art
of hospitality to a premium standard
that is not to be surpassed elsewhere, but
also engages the crowd no matter how
large to feel like part of the Moon family.
To say Mooneyes throws the best parties
in town is an understatement. Meanwhile, they continually outgrow their
venues and might need another location
in 2017. This year, attendees at Irwindale
Raceway were on scene at 4:30 AM;
by 10:00 AM, the place was packed to
stands with rocking music in the background and rolling thunder on the 1/8mile strip. It’s awesome. See our photos.

mild roar were in full force. The successful “Be Calm, Not Loud” Shizukani campaign respected the surrounding neighborhood as hundreds of motorcycles
loaded into the venue peacefully as eager
attendees from all over Europe, North
America and Asia trekked over for one
of the greatest car shows on Earth.
Later, several special guests,
15,000 spectators, 300 show cars,

Wildman), 40 model cars, 80 “Surfing
Bonanza” entries and 100 awards tried
not to blow the roof off the Pacifico

Milwaukee’s Cheaterama grows by 100 cars

erry Urbaniak was popping
rockabilly discs in the player
and his brother Carl was taking
a breather when Jimmy walked up.
“He’s been with us since the first
show,” Carl said. “That’s a huge
testament. He’s still enjoying it after 17
years. Right Jimmy?”
Jimmy smiled. “Wouldn’t have it
any other way buddy,” he answered.
Meanwhile, bodyman “Magoo”
and his wife were asking the girl
in the Betty Boop beachwear if the
tachometer T-shirt hanging up
behind her was his size. The ones for
sale weren’t.
Carl came over. “Leave your info
and we’ll contact you if we find one.”

It was the 17th annual Cheaterama at The Terminal—right across
the street from the entrance to Milwaukee’s Mitchell Field airport.
Cheaterama is a traditional hot rod
show where friendliness mixes
with freakiness.
“Actually, it’s our 18th event,” Carl
explained. The second year we did
spring and fall shows and realized that
it was a lot of work and not that cool, so
we went back to one.”
The 2015 show was big. “We were
told by our unofficial counter - who’s
official - that she stopped counting at
605 cars today,” said Carl. “That’s good
because that’s a full 100 more than we
had last year.”
Cheaterama was one of the first
“old school” rod shows, but Carl
and his brother who co-founded the
Cheaters car club don’t claim to be
first. “I think a lot of people back
then thought about it and talked
about it, but no one necessarily did
anything about it. It’s like the old
saying ‘The road to Hell is paved with
good intentions.’ So, we just decided
to do something.”
As for success this year, Carl
credited the weather. “I did a Polish
rain dance,” he said. “The good
weather is definitely the biggest thing.
Weather is a key factor in all of these
events whether it’s the Hunnert Car
Pile Up, Vintage Torque Fest, or
Cheaterama. Even though we say
they’re not made of sugar, it’s a pain in
the ass to clean these cars when they
get all wet.”
Carl said that his concept for
the show was always simple. “If you
open up the ‘little pages’ from 1954,
that’s what we like to see at our show.
And we know it’s up to ’63 for a lot
of reasons, such as we don’t want to
alienate people, but honestly, after ’63
custom cars got a little weird and hot
rods disappeared.’ Muscle cars came
in after that, so we cut it off at ’63.”

With those guidelines to keep
things manageble, Cheaterama probably draws the best hot rods in Wisconsin. There were beautiful examples of
the icons you see in almost every issue
of Ol’ Skool Rodz and Car Kulture DeLuxe, including Dueces, James Dean
Mercs, Shoebox Fords and early Fifties
Chevys. But also on hand were some
standouts-in-the-crowd like a ’40 Olds
coupe, a couple of Studebaker Loewy
coupes, a mellow yellow straight-axle
’53 Chevy and the neatest looking ’36
Ford with a Packard grille grafted on
the front end.

Cheaterama is a showcase for cool
taillight treatments, different styles of
flames and graphics, a rainbow of metallic colors and chopped and channeled
roadsters, coupes and Tudors. Fords and
Mercs seemed to dominate the turnout
by slightly more than half, but there
were also Hudsons and Dodge Brothers
bodies around. It was hard to overlook a
metalflake T-bucket with straight-outof-an-old-rod-magazine white fake fur
seat trim.
One thing that Cheaterama definitely isn’t is a small block Chevy show.

Cheaterama had a sprinkling of
pin-up girls and a handful of vendors,
although it was mostly just a car show
with some of the best rides around the
state on display for a single day. If anyone had any complaints, it was probably
based on the notion that a couple of days
of Cheaterama would be even cooler
than one day. But then it might be more
work and less play and that’s no fun.

BSA B40 is a beauty.

‘63 Beezer dreams
hilin, a professional striper
and painter, is a member
of Von Hot Rod’s Pinstripe
Circus, a traveling pinstripe show
that participates in car shows and
charity events, and does custom work
for private clients. He had bought this
motorcycle to ride but after having

some minor mechanical issues,
decided that a ‘60s show bike would be
his dream come true instead. It started
out as a bare metal kustom that did not
do this BSA B40 justice.
One day, while striping scallops
on Tom Cunningham’s sedan delivery,
Chilin and Tom started discussing this
1963 BSA and a vision for a show bike
(it had been sitting in the garage for a
year and a half). Little did Chilin know,
Tom is an expert on old bikes, hot rods,
and other cool stuff, and the former
BSA Cinderella scrap heap was about
to turn into a real beauty.
The Teardown
After Chilin brought the
motorcycle over to Tom’s, they
started the teardown. While Chilin
was picking color choices and
graphics for his dream project, Tom
showed him a simple spring that had
locked up his transmission. Together
they fixed all the mechanicals and started
to build custom components.
This BSA is a kick-start machine (like all
BSAs) with Mini-Mite transistorized ignition
and stock mag in the engine case. The engine
is a stock 350cc B40 single with a four speed
BSA trans. The Amal carb is vintage 1950s
and sports a velocity stack. Chilin fabricated
a custom exhaust pipe with a Sportster
tip. The oil tank was built from scratch
and the electrical box was fabricated out of
aluminum and polished. The rear fender
brace was custom fabricated, then chromed
by A&B Polishing and Chrome. A 1929 Ford
rear “STOP” taillight was mounted next.
The front and rear wheels are UK
made stainless steel, 19” in front and 18” in
the rear, with Avon tires sized 2.75-19 and
4.00-18. Stopping power is from original
drum brakes.
Golden Beauty
The stock BSA frame has a swing arm
rear suspension; previously this one was
converted to a rigid frame. The frame was
formerly bare metal and the rear frame welds
needed to be re-done to bring this bike to a
roadworthy condition. Once the frame work
was completed, Chilin sprayed a base of
Pagan Gold with gold flake added. The tank
and fenders followed, along with tangerine
candy scallops.
While the shiny parts were sent off for
chroming and polishing, Chilin took the bike
home and tastefully striped almost every
inch of frame, tank and rear fender in ivory.
Outlining the scallops and tracing around the
frame, Chilin’s pinstriping is period correct,
stylish, and faithful to the ‘60s show themed
bike that he envisioned. The end result took
11 months to complete and successfully
envisions the original idea. Custom touches
aside from fabrication include a sissy bar,
bullet caps and a white vinyl seat with gold
piping. The wheels were assembled and
laced at Buchanan’s Spoke & Rim, Inc., who
came through in pinch to finalize this bike
for its first show at the 2015 WCK Cruisin’
Nationals, were it debuted in our Koolhouse
Publishing booth. There is also an old school
styled Suburban that acts as the bike hauler.
Special thanks to all who helped along
the way: Tom Cunningham for his valuable
assistance, Noe Aguilera who wired the bike
and Chilin’s wife, Karla for letting him store
his freshly painted BSA in the bedroom for
two days. He jokes, “That was very romantic.”
Of course, plans for another project bike are
in the works, right?

Boxed Frame and
Transmission Mount
keep thinking I’m ready to work
the body on my Model A; make
a floor to channel the body, chop
the top 5”, and repair the rusty lower
sections. But I’m not quite there yet.
My big concern is that if I work the
chassis after I get the body mounted,
the body won’t retain the proper fit
I’m looking for. I know the Model A
fit is considerably sloppy, but I want
to minimize as much slop as possible
while I’m working the steel. I’m
willing to spend time that was skipped
85 years ago on the Ford assembly
line. A firm foundation is critical to a
symmetrical and well-fit body.
Final steps on my chassis are to
box and brace the frame rails, and
make the rear transmission mount and
rear radius rod pivot point. The radius

rod pivot point will be located on the
rear transmission mount, so these
two tasks will happen simultaneously.
Because I’m limited on time right
now, I will only box the frame forward
of the original middle crossmember,
as far forward as I can go without
removing the engine. Later, I’ll pull
the engine and continue forward to
the front cross-member with the steel
boxing plate.
I’ll box the frame rails with
⅛” (0.125) steel plate. With my oxyacetylene cutting torch, I cut two 24”
lengths of 4” wide plate (photo 1). One
of these plates will box the driver
side of the car, while the other will
box the passenger side. Before I weld
these plates in, I locate four mounting
holes at the aft end of each, where the
transmission rear mount will bolt to
the frame. At the same time, I transfer

this four-hole pattern, using a paper
pattern, to two pieces of ¼” (0.250) steel
plate that I cut from a larger piece with
my power shear (photo 2). These two
pieces of ¼” plate will become the end
flanges of my rear transmission mount,
which will hold the transmission
mount firmly to the frame.
I’d typically drill the sixteen ⅝”
diameter holes required in the boxing
plates and transmission mount flange
plates, which is a time-consuming
process. Instead of drilling sixteen
pilot holes, oiling, and stepping up
drill bit sizes and repeating several
times, I am able to make quick work
of this job with my new punch press
from Woodward Fab (photo 3). In
less than five minutes, all of my holes
were punched through the clean
steel plates (photo 4). The boxing
plates are fairly thin, so I welded
nuts to the inside surfaces to hold
the bolt pressure needed to secure
the transmission mount to the boxed
frame rails.
With everything ready to go
together, I prep the frame rails and
boxing plates for fit and welding
(photo 5). My rusty frame rails contain
impurities that weaken a weld joint,
so I remove as much as possible by
brushing on Evapo-Rust (photo 6).
This chemical removes the rust on the
frame’s surface and brings back what
is left of the original finish.

Using a grinding wheel on a handheld angle grinder, I bevel the edges of
the frame rails where the boxing plates
will be welded to the frame. In a like
manner, I bevel the inside edges of the
boxing plates. When mated together,
the beveled edges of the plates and the
frame rails form a deep “V,” which will
allow my weld the deepest possible
penetration, providing the strongest

possible weld joint (photo 7).
After the quick welding procedure
is done (photo 8), I move on to making
the rear transmission mount. The
mount will be fabricated from 2” by
4” rectangular steel tubing. I do some
math and figuring, and miter-cut the
material for the mount with my cold
saw (photo 9). After a little fitting, I
repeat the beveling procedure at all of
the weld joints, and clamp the mount
to my welding table for some MIG
beads. Once the mount is cool, I slide
it up into place between the mounting
flange plates on the frame for welding
(photo 10). A few short minutes later,
I have a solid rear transmission
mount that is easily removable for
transmission and clutch maintenance
and service (photo 11).

f you grew up within a 100 mile
radius of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, then two things are probably certain.
1. You knew someone who worked
long hard hours at one of the many
steel mills, simply referred to as “the
mill,” and was damn proud of it.
2. You knew someone, probably
the same person, who lost his job when
“the mill” shut down. “Worst thing that
ever happened to that town,” people
would say.
For over 150 years, Pittsburgh
was known for its steel industry,
pumping out molten metal 24 hours a
day, turning the sky black, so the rest
of the country could build itself from
the ground up. In an 1868 issue of
The Atlantic magazine, James Parton
described Pittsburgh as “hell with the
lid off.”
Progress, as the old-timers said,
changed all of that. The mills shut
down, furnaces turned cold, and
towns emptied.
For the last dozen years or so,
the Twin Hi-Way Drive-In, one of
the remaining 500 drive-in theatres
in the country, was home to a
Pittsburgh car-cruise tradition, the
Steeltown Shakedown. Featured in
this very magazine once or twice, the
Shakedown was a car cruise dedicated
to those same old school ideals. Built
from the ground up and some still a
work in progress, vintage cars and
motorcycles, some a little shiny and
some a little rusty, rolled in, driven by
someone damn proud of the steel on
top of the tires. The drive-in’s prime
commercial property is now under
contract with a local gas station and
convenience store. The iconic movie
screen has gone blank. Progress...

lia is about to return to where it all began, though, a Pittsburgh blast furnace.
The Carrie Furnace is a derelict former
blast furnace located along the Monongahela River in the Pittsburgh-area
industrial town of Swissvale, Pennsylvania. A part of the Homestead Steel
Works, the Carrie Furnaces were built
in 1884 and operated until 1982.
For over a century, hot steel rolled
out of Pittsburgh mills and got twisted
into frames and fenders, bumpers and
fins. Pittsburgh steel - the stuff our
grandfathers talked about. The mill.
The Sacred Piston Car Club is
proud to announce that the Carrie
Furnace in Swissvale will be the new
site of the Steeltown Shakedown on
September 17, 2016. You can expect
what you’ve become accustomed to
at the Shakedown: music, food, cool
cars, bikes, customs, good times, and as
always, good people.

isa English received her 1929
Ford A-V8 Roadster seven
years ago as a surprise gift
from her husband, Eli. It was in a
Tilton, New Hampshire, barn and was
last registered in 1942.
Eli owns Traditional Speed and
Custom, based in the huge antique barn
behind their home. Lisa met Eli as he
picked her up for a blind date in his
1955 Ford seventeen years ago. That
also ignited her passion for hot rods and
customs. After years of driving Eli’s
cars, she decided it was time to find one
of her own, the only stipulation being it
had to be a traditional convertible and
the whole family had to be involved,
including their two boys.
In June of 2015, they moved
the roadster to the shop specifically
to build for TROG (The Race of
Gentlemen). It was decided to keep
everything “as found,” wishing to build
a pre-1948 car with as many original
parts as possible. The roadster also
came with the luggage rack with one
of the taillights, plate bracket and 1942
license plate that are on the car today.

meets, calling friends, scrounging,

trading, and posting on social media. They
were looking for worn but not worn out,
rusted but not rotted, and painted but
weathered donors. Eli would patina the parts
to blend in with the rest of the roadster if
they looked too new. The remainder of parts
then came from Eli’s personal collection,
which ultimately kept the build under $3500
without using reproduction or catalog parts.

and associated pieces (engine, transmission,
steering column, steering wheel, brakes,
and front and rear wishbones) was obtained
in trade for a vintage gas pump. The rear
axle is a 1939 Ford’s and was left in the
driveway one day by a neighbor, who
thought they might be able to use it. The
four-inch dropped front axle and reverseeye spring came in trade for some 1928
roadster doors. The axle was then drilled in
the garage. A ’35 Ford truck grille, received
in payment on another project, had to be
narrowed four inches and thinned by three
inches to look correct housing the 1936
passenger car radiator. The front wheels
and tires were swap meet finds while
rear wheels and tires were donated to the
project by a friend. All of this was mocked
up before it was moved to the shop for the
family to get serious with assembly.
The car was disassembled down to the
bare frame. The welds were all finished,
frame boxed, and driveline bolted together.
The front wishbones were split using tie
rods and tie rod ends which required the
cast ends be removed so the bones could
be re-degreed to get the proper caster
angle. The 1939 torque tube was shortened.
In order to get the rear wheels to fall
properly in the wheel arches, the frame
was lengthened six inches since the spring
was now mounted behind the axle as
opposed to above it. Homemade motor and
transmission mounts were utilized and the
car started to take shape.
With TROG fast approaching, the car
was fine-tuned and test driven, resulting in
the motor blowing, taking the radiator with
it. This was just one week away from hitting
the TROG start line on the beach. After a
few frantic phone calls, a new motor was
found by a friend on Craigslist and they also
managed to trade for another radiator.
The success of this build was confirmed
as it was put on the trailer attached to Eli’s
1955 Ford, headed to the sand at Wildwood,
New Jersey. Lisa was able to participate with
the first group of women drivers, proud to
see the ladies hit the sand.

Danny Bacher is not only a car guy, he likes
anything with wheels. He is also a car
builder, at least mentally.

n his mind, he’s modified this or
customized that, like we all do. He’s
never actually built one of his own
designs from scratch, though. But he’s
also smart enough to only let the pros
actually touch the metal. So when he
attended a Goodguys show and came
away with an inspiration for a 1931
Ford Model A hot rod, one built like the
rodders of the ‘50s would do it, but with
some modern-day perfection, a dailydriver with one-off style, he decided to
first find the right builder. That led him
to Atlanta’s Mills & Co., none other than
Josh Mills himself and able aide- decamp, Gary Overacre.
Danny walked into Mills & Co.
one day with nothing more than
this general idea of a car and was
amazed. Most folks unfamiliar with
the custom car business are likewise
overwhelmed when they first realize
just what a truly talented builder
can do. The general public confuses
customizers’ shops with body shops,
only “talented” at matching 7-year old
paint on the polyurethane bumper
fascia of a 2009 minivan. Craftsmen
like Mills & Co. are like Michelangelos
in comparison, and that’s no insult
to body shops, just illustrating the
difference in purpose.
Danny found Josh “very
intriguing” and the fatal blow was
when he studied Josh’s personal ride,
a ‘35 Ford. It was “one of the bestlooking cars I’d ever seen, full of neat
touches.” Danny fell in love with whole
process and had to do it. He loved the
idea of creating a one-off masterpiece
from scratch in this style.
The charge was: nothing too
radical, reliable, built to drive, periodstyled hot rod as if built in the 1950s
in the traditional style. Mills & Co.
found this original ‘31 in Virginia,
body only, shipped it to Atlanta, had
it sandblasted, and the fun work began.
Danny didn’t want the standard
dashboard and he didn’t want the
same kind of dash modification that
everyone else had. So Mills fabricated
a complete dash, hammered out of
metal, from scratch, to fit a gauge plate
they sourced from a vintage boat,
one of the beautiful teak runabouts
you see from the ‘30s. Genuine old
Stewart-Warner gauges went in. The
result looks correct and finished,
like a factory job, yet there’s nothing
else like it anywhere. Danny wanted
the tachometer, and on the steering
column where God intended, but not
some bolt-on kit type tach. Mills found
a genuine vintage Stewart-Warner
tach and custom-made a stainless
mount for the steering column.
They took three inches out of
the roof and three and one half out of
the floor. They also dropped the axles
in front. The car is low, but not too
low. It could have been lower but it’s
a city car. Danny parks at his office
downtown. He has government speed
bumps and potholes to contend with.
Because of the car’s city life,
they also reluctantly had to swap out
the mechanical cooling fan with an
electric one. Hey, it’s a hot-natured
small-block Chevy 350 with a custommade radiator and chopped grille in
Georgia! They used a generator, not
alternator. There are drum brakes on
all corners, and bias-ply tires, because
that’s the way it should be.
Everything is painted, stainless,
or powdercoated, even the frame,

suspension, interior pieces, the rims,
the grille shell. In fact, the gas tank
between the trunk and passenger
compartment, was going to be left raw
(no one can see it) but that just looked
funny compared to the rest of the car,
so they finished it, too.
The wood in the roof that Henry
originally used was beyond repair, so
they used the same kind of wood and
in the same style, cut and assembled
the same way and stained as the
original. In fact, the whole top is
identical to the original, the same
roof line and construction. The insert
is removable, made from
convertible Haartz cloth,
snapped all the way around.
Burt Litton did interior
pieces, even making custom
pockets for the door shells to
hold smaller stuff. Exposed
bolt heads line up. There’s
no iPad connection or USB
charger port, though.
Danny knew from the
start that he wanted bomber
seats so Mills found a guy
that custom fabricates them
- Mike Mercurio in Roswell, Georgia.
Then Burt gave the seats about two
inches of cushion. He copied vintage
patterns to make the pleats.
They were going to do a flat
paint, but it didn’t look right, even
after trying seven or eight shades.
Mills tapped their network of paint
magicians. Eventually they settled
on this color, Goldmine Pearl from
House of Kolor; it had some fluff to
it, some metallic. It didn’t look right
in the can, it didn’t look right on the
car, so they gloss cleared it (done by
Josh Deavers at Customs and Colors).
This sumptuous symphony of color
resulted, changing constantly in the
light. Photos cannot really show how
impressive it is, despite our using a
great photographer.
None other than Bill Abrams did
the pinstriping. He had retired, but
did it as a favor to Josh. It has neat
touches everywhere: the dash, trunk,
hub caps.
Danny says he can do 80 MPH
on highway. It drives like a go-kart,
weighing nothing, with minimal
suspension travel and that big beefy
350 motor up front. Danny says the
only drawback is the time it takes to
talk to everyone that wants to stop and
talk about it, every place he goes.

have read and heard that
line before in magazines
and conversations but
never experienced it myself until
I went to the Rat Fink Reunion in
Manti, Utah.
Now the Rat Fink Reunions
have been around for a long time
I
and in short, they started out as little
get-togethers in somebody’s shop or
garage, where Ed “Big Daddy” Roth
would hold court, sometimes with Von
Dutch in attendance. Franks & beans
would be cooked up, pinstripers would
lay out some lines, and old stories
would be told by friends and Ed’s old
employees. The tradition continues
today, even after the passing of the
great “Big Daddy.” The Reunion I went to was
at the home of Ed Roth and his
wife, Ilene. The family puts on a big
shindig in the back yard and there are
custom cars, hot rods and motorcycles,
and a few handbuilt “what the heck is
thats?” parked up and down the street
of this small town. Every year around
the first weekend of June, fans of the
“Rat Fink” come from all over - East
Coast, West Coast, and even fly in from

other countries - to attend this event.
I say “event,” but it really is more of a
family reunion.
I traveled from Kansas City to the
Reunion with my show car, the “Roswell Rod,” that I built as a tribute to all
the crazy show rods Big Daddy built
back in the early ‘60s. I parked the car
inside the museum, which is full of all
types of merchandise you could have
bought from Ed Roth through his magazine ads and catalogs back in the day:
models kits, Rat Fink ring displays,
T-shirts etc. Hanging from the rafters
are old hand airbrushed sweatshirts
and Halloween costumes. There is a
ton of donated hand-painted art on
hats, toilet seats, and mail boxes. There
are even the back doors off a minivan with Rat Fink painted on them!

There’s a wall full of many of the silk
screens that Ed himself pushed ink
through to make those crazy T-shirts.
You will need a good chunk of time to
lay your eyes on all this Fink-ness.
There are no worries if you get
hungry, because the family cooks
up a feast fit for a king - or a Big
Daddy in this case - and it isn’t all
hamburgers and hot dogs, gang. It’s
chicken teriyaki, or beef stew, deviled
eggs (my fav) and banana splits every
night. Yeah, I gained a few pounds but
it was worth it.
Saturday is the car show in the
local park. It’s not a huge affair but
a cozy get-together of like-minded
car folks. You’ll see it all, too: a rare
unrestored Boss Mustang barn find,
lead sleds, gassers, stock Model A
fords, chopped and channeled Model
As. There are plenty of food vendors,
T-shirt tents, some stuff for the
ladies and there are awards that are
handmade or painted by the “official
Rat Fink artists,” which they give out
to their personal choices.
If you are a Rat Fink or
counterculture art fan, you need to do
this event at least once. Make plans
way in advance because hotel rooms
go quickly and most are booked a year
in advance. You might have to stay in
the next town over and there is a camp
ground in Manti if that’s your bag. I
made a lot of new friends, saw friends
I haven’t seen in a while or only see at
other car shows, and got to meet some
folks that I have been friends with on
Facebook in “real life.” OSR 65

ea culture” in the UK primarily refers to
the beverage: served hot or cold, strong
or sweet. “T- Kulture” in American
rodding pertains to anything Ford Model T. Model
T lovers are experts on the topic and usually regale
us with affectionate humor and stories about their
cars. Overall, the T changed the way we live and work
(thanks to Henry Ford) and track-T roadsters, with
their racy styling, are some of the most recognizable
hot rods in automotive history. Al “Stoney” Stone and
his son John have brewed up not one, but two tasty Ts
of their own. This one is John’s.

Steel Sweetie
The tech on this roadster is full of
modifications too numerous to list here but you
can bet that everything on it has been kicked
up, smoothed down, sectioned, shortened,
scooped, poked, spoked, shackled, filled, hairpinned, hand-fabbed, reshaped and chopped. It’s
the type of nostalgia race car that would turn
discerning heads at The Race of Gentlemen.
For John’s automotive creation, literally
every nut and bolt has been well thought out,
from the 480 louvers to the shortened turtle
deck. His attention to detail (well honed from

years of set dressing experience) is
not only outstanding, it’s the reason
why we choose it for our Rodz Deluxe
Award. Special acknowledgement
goes to Performance Edge and Tommy
Krish Interiors for their craftsmanship
on the project.
Since the original vehicle has
been revamped from decade to decade
including 2014 when it was completely
overhauled, you best have some fun
with it. After all, this car is 93 years
old, still going strong and is a perfect
example of what our hot rod hobby is
all about. We save old steel, put it back
on the road, and then we drive it.
“Fab-tastic” Ford
Stone’s Track T roadster exemplifies the spirit of hot rodding; countless
hours spent bench racing its technical
aspects at car shows proves that. Henry
Ford would have loved it.

A+ Model A Tudor

hen Shea Eastman’s 1929 Model A Ford Tudor showed up at the
Jefferson, Wisconsin, car show, it looked like a minature version
of the gorgeous 1929 Packard hot rod we had photographed a few
weeks earlier. The style of the two cars and the color were just about the same
and both of these traditional hot rods were built with a sense of taste and a
heavy dose of craftsmanship.
Eastman bought his car from a
man who lived near Madison, Wisconsin, and it took him about 8-1/2 years to
build. The body was not in bad shape
when he got the car and all it needed
were a couple of little patch panels
welded in behind the rear tires.
“Then, we blew the whole body
apart down to the seams,” Eastman
recalled. “So, next we cleaned everything up and did all the body work. My
dad is a body man by trade, so he was
the mastermind behind whatever body
work we did.”
The stock Model A frame was Z’d
2-1/2 inches in back and stretched 8
inches. That meant the wheelbase was

104 inches, instead of the stock Model
A’s 100 inches. Newman, who works
for the local highway department, did a
great job on what was his first car build.
“I did go to school to be a diesel
and heavy-duty equipment mechanic,
so I guess that helped in building this
car,” he said. Eastman related that he
grew up with a dad who was around
old cars his entire life. “It’s a sickness
you know,” he observed. “But, it’s a
good one.”
The car has a 3.00:1 gear in it, so
it’s a good highway cruiser. Shea has
driven it up to Minneapolis-St. Paul to
the “Back to the Fifties” show for the
past three years.
“It goes down the road okay,” he
noted. “It’s a light car on bias-ply tires,
so it’s not perfect, but it still runs out
pretty good.”
The engine powering the Model
A is a ’63 Buick Nailhead. The mill
is fitted with sidedraft Stromberg
carburetors. Eastman bought them
through an online forum. The Guide
headlights he got from an old local
junkyard guy who has a lot of vintage
stuff. They had only a couple of little
dents in them, but the trim rings and
lenses were almost perfect. Modified
Ford F-100 shock mounts are used.
The car was chopped 2 inches and a
1931 Model A visor was used on the
1929 body.
Eastman said that he didn’t design
the whole car first and then build it.
Instead, he figured out what he wanted
to do as the project moved along.
“We kind of knew what we
wanted and we just moved from that
point,” he added.
Out-of-the-box Sanderson
exhaust headers were fitted to the
engine, with 2-inch stainless steel
tubing all the way back. The engine is
bolted to a Turbo 350 tranny with an
adapter plate for the Buick Nailhead.
The third member is a Ford 9-inch
axle with a kind of “dummy hub” in
the back of the banjo to make it look
like an older rear end.
Eastman pirated the steering
wheel from a 1949 Ford and cut it
down to 17 inches to make it fit in the
Model A. Strangely enough, Eastman
and his dad are not Ford enthusiasts,
although his dad actually restored
three Model As to factory condition.
“I always liked those cars,” said
Glen Eastman. “But we were both born
and raised as Chevy guys. Then, we
became just car guys. So, anything cool
with four wheels is right up our alley.”
That doesn’t quite explain Shea
Eastman’s future projects. Waiting in
the wings are a ’51 Chevy pickup, a
’52 Chevy coupe and a first-series ’55
Chevy Suburban.
“I can’t help it if my bucket list
is heavy on Chevy,” he laughed.
“Maybe this Ford project was just a
practice session.”
If so, we can’t wait to see what the
three Chevys turn out to be, since the
Model A is a real gem of a car.

“Move it or lose it!” That’s music to Zane Cox’s ears because that is
how this 1930 Model A coupe became available for purchase after
84 years of possession by the previous owner.
T
he city-issued red tag on the
gate of this old adobe house in
Southern California advised the
owner that she had 30 days to clear the
yard of overgrown weeds, debris and nonoperational cars before facing fines. Among
the weeds and less desirable early ‘80s cars
and trucks sat a Model A, covered in old
blankets and hidden behind a dilapidated
tin shed.
Zane learned that there may be a car in
the yard worth looking at from a neighbor
who seemed all too pleased that the yard
was tagged. After a little recon via Google
earth, it was clear that the blanket covered
image warranted a drive-by in the alley. As
Zane peered through the wood slat fence, he
could see the shape of the car, confirming
that it was a Model A. He also saw an old
woman sitting on the back porch.

He made his way to the front of the
house where an excitable Chihuahua
barked unrelentingly until the little old
lady emerged from the rear of the house
to investigate. After a lengthy and friendly
discussion, she unlocked the gate and
allowed Zane to venture to the back of
the yard where he uncovered the car for
a better look. What he found was the
mere shell of the once glorious prized
possession that the family purchased
new from a local Ford dealership in 1930.
The blankets used to protect the car had
exacerbated the deterioration, as they
held the moisture in, causing the body to
rust from the outside in.
Given the one-owner history of the
car, Zane was overcome with the need
to strike a deal and drag it back to his
Huntington Beach shop, Helltrain Street
Rats, HTSR for resurrection. Following
his promise to bring the car back to life,
the spry 92-year-old lady allowed him to
purchase the car for $1300.
Once at the shop, Zane promptly
removed the running gear and dispatched
it to a local Model A restoration garage,
where it would live on under the
unadulterated body of a restored Model
A. The body was then stripped of its
paint, revealing extensive corrosion and
pitting throughout. The condition was so
bad that Zane concluded the car would
require an inner skin to provide support
and retain the car’s classic lines. He
drew upon his aviation background and
engineered bulkheads in order to tie the
inner skin to the outer skin. The skin-onskin engineering was carried throughout
the entire car, making it extremely rigid
and reminiscent of activities surrounding
the fictional character, Hannibal Lector.
The roof was chopped 4” and the
body was channeled over the HTSR
fabricated frame which was designed
with an 18” Z in the rear, then fitted with
ladder bars and coil-over shocks. Out
front, the frame was Z’d 6” and a floating
heim mount was created for the wishbone
front suspension.
The powerplant is a Chevy 350
breathing through a Stromberg 97 tripower intake and exhausting out the
HTSR hand-fabricated zoomie headers.
The 350 is bolted to a short shaft Turbo
400 transmission which spins the Ford
9” rear end. Traction is delivered by the
31” Hurst cheater slicks wrapped around
a one-off set of steel smoothie wheels,

In the age of technology and instant
gratification, many of us look for
easy answers and quick fixes for
our problems. High school wood
shop teacher Dave Slade is not one
of those individuals. Quick and easy
was not on Dave’s mind when he
started the rebuild project on his
1926 Ford.
O
riginally, the 1926 Ford was purchased at
an auction by one of Dave’s friends. His
friend never had time to build the car.
However, Dave was eager for the opportunity. So
for their tenth wedding anniversary, Dave’s wife
purchased the car as a gift. Yes, his wife purchased
the car!
Dave had previous experience building cars,
but he wanted to build a car completely from
scratch. It took five years of creativity and hard
work, but Dave successfully completed that
task and ended up with a beautiful custom built
Model T.
Initially, Dave planned to use a Ford tractor
grille as the focal point of the car. He liked the look
and had never seen another Model T with this
unique feature. To get the look he wanted, Dave
was forced to disassemble and weld three Ford
tractor grille shells to create one custom grille.
After getting permission from his wife, Dave
decided to repurpose a few parts from her 1954
Oldsmobile. The motor, drivetrain, and dash were
some of the main parts used to fill the Model T shell.
Dave had to cut the Oldsmobile dash down
14 inches to shoehorn it into the Model T interior.
While working on the dash, he came across the
green interior color under the dash of the Olds.
Dave saved a chunk of the green metal to take to
the paint shop, where he matched the color and
knew that was going to be the exterior color.
Besides the Oldsmobile green exterior paint
scheme, the public’s attention is drawn to the
emblem in the center of the grille. Turns out the
emblem is a re-creation from a mid-1950s Ford
industrial engine.

When Dave was in junior high
school, his great grandmother gave
him a set of brass knuckles. Not sure
what to do with them, he left them in
a drawer for years. When it came time
to design the shifter, Dave knew the
perfect handle, the brass knuckles.
Dave lives in a neighborhood full
of do-it-yourself hot rodders, so he was
grateful to all who gave advice in regards
to the engine, chassis and front suspen-
sion. Given the car sat neglected for over
20 years, Dave found a complete custom
chassis overhaul was a necessity.
This Model T is a driver and it gets
driven rain or shine.
“I believe hot rods are meant to be
driven,” said Dave. “If you are going to
build them, you might as well have fun
in them.”

The Model A Ford is a relatively simple car to chop the
roof on, especially if you’re talented at metal fabrication,
like Mark Siedler of Phoenix Machine, LLC. It was a cold
Saturday morning in January when Mark took his cut-off
wheel to a Model A coupe owned by Kelly Long of Kelly’s
Hot Rod Parts.
P
reparation is the key and he
was prepared. Prior to chop
day, Mark removed the interior,
trim and windows from the car. He
braced the interior by tack welding a
couple of pieces of angle iron in place.
Braces keep the car’s body from flexing
when the roof is cut off.
Next, it was time to decide where
the chop line will go. Mark and Kelly
had decided to go with a three-inch
chop. However, it isn’t good practice
to just scribe two lines, three inches
apart, all around the car. Instead, it’s
best to go through the door pillars in
an area where the chop won’t disturb
the hinges.
On the front pillar, the hinge determined where it was best to remove 3”,
putting the cut-out section roughly in
the middle. However, Mark took his cut
out of the center pillar at a higher point.
He looks for the straightest 3” section,
because if you cut where there’s a slight
curve, it’s harder to match up the remaining sections of the pillar above and
below the chop.

“The window openings have to be
cut where the pillars will fit together
when the top comes down,” Mark emphasized. Luckily, the Model A has a
pretty straight roof and fairly vertical
pillars. Mark says that when you chop
the top on one of these cars, you do
have to lay the front pillar back very
slightly to get a perfect fit.
When scribing his chop lines
around the rear corners of the roof,
Mark likes to come from the quarter
window, then drop down vertically
almost to the belt line, go around to the
rear window and then go back up vertically to the cut line. This reduces the
chances of the metal warping when
it is welded. “Hammer welding can
take care of warping,” Mark pointed
out. “But, by cutting near the belt line,
it keeps warping to a minimum compared to if you simply cut at window
height around the rear roof corners.”
Before making chop lines, Mark
ground off paint, primer and other
finish on the chop area. Next, he used
blue machinist’s layout dye to color

the area. Since you can’t bend a ruler
around the roof corners, Mark made
up thin sheet metal strips the size of
the cut (three inches wide in this case)
in advance. He clamped the strips to
the body and used them like straight
edges. This allowed him to mark off
perfectly straight horizontal lines on
the curved rear roof panel.
To make the lines around the door
and windshield posts straight, Mark
scribed chop lines on the body side of
each post. He put hose clamps around
the posts and used them as cutting
guides. “I take my cut-off wheel and
work my way around the posts, following the hose clamps.” said Mark.
“Without using the hose clamps as a
guide, it would be hard to get a straight
cut through to the interior.”
According to Mark, he sometimes
runs into window or door posts with
a thicker area than usual and a cut-off
wheel won’t cut completely through the
center as you work your way around
each of the four sides. In these instances, Mark uses a Sawz-All tool to get to
the center of the posts. “You just nip
a little off,” he says. “After the roof is
removed, use a small grinder to flatten
the areas left from the Sawz-All tool, as
well as any other imperfections.”
After slicing a 3” section out of
both windshield posts (A-pillars), Mark
inserted two blocks of wood in the gap
that he had created to keep the roof
level. The blocks held the other posts in
position and kept the blade of his SawzAll from pinching in the next cut. With
the front of the roof supported in this
manner, a 3” cut was then made in the
right door post (B-pillar).
At this point, the manpower
kicked in, with Kelly Long and his
crew jumping in to support the roof as
Mark took a similar cut out of the left-
hand door post. Once again he used his
cut-off tool, hose clamps, and then his
Sawz-All.
Moving on to the rear quarter
sections of the roof, Mark first cut out
a notch on each side of the rear window at just about the center. Then, he
cut down from the outer edge of the
notches to the belt line. Next, he cut
out 3” wide horizontal strips along the
belt line that ran around the corners of
the roof to the quarter windows. This
turned the roof into a kind of “jigsaw
piece” that dropped down 3” all around,
but not at the same level everywhere.
For example, the rear window
dropped 3” from the top of the notches
Mark cut to the bottom of the notches,
while the roof quarter dropped 3” to
the belt line. This “staggered chop”
took less strength out of the metal and
helped it resist warping when it was
heated with the welding torch.
After the cuts were made on the
roof rear quarters on both sides, Kelly
and his helpers lifted the roof completely off the car. Then, Mark used a
small grinder to flatten rough areas on
the posts that had been cut through
with the Sawz-All and to dress any
other imperfections he eyeballed.
Then, the roof was set back on the
car and Mark checked for gaps. With
a little grinding here and there, and
re-checking, Mark got the roof to sit
flat and level on all its supports.

Mark also measured the window
openings from side to side and front to
back. Naturally, they had to match if
he wanted the glass to fit. He touched
up the grinding areas to achieve correct measurements and to insure that
there were no gaps along the cut lines.
If you’re doing your first chopped roof,
you’ll want to spend some time on this.
At this point, it was time to set the
roof back on the car and tack weld it
in place. Mark started by tacking all
four corners, because they must line
up first. The front door posts that form
the windshield frame had to be leaned
back very slightly to match up with
the roof. He tacked them in the leanedback position.

When the roof was cut off, it probably released some tension in the metal and this changed its shape slightly.
So, you might need to push and pull
on some spots to get them to line up
right. If screw-jack type spreaders are
available, they can be used to apply
pressure or you can use 2x4s and grunt
work (in this instance, supplied by Kelly Long) to get the job done. After the
four roof corners were welded in place,
the body panels were back under tension again.
After he tacked all four corners,
Mark tacked the B-pillars in place and
moved to the quarter window area. All
the tacked areas must be checked and

re-checked to confirm they are straight
and measure up just right. Then, you’re
ready to tack the door frames (remember you cut through these, too). Remember that flat, straight door frames with
proper gaps all around are key here.
Mark welded up the chopped
area and ground the metal to make it
look like it had not been cut. Mark is
a true artist when it comes to metal
refinishing. He was careful not to take
too much metal off at any spot. He
said that you should avoid grinding
through. “You just really have to be
careful how you do it,” he said. “If you
finish metal the right way, you can
save time in the body shop because

you don’t have to use a bunch of Bondo
or lead work. The more time you take
with the metal finishing, the less time
the car spends in the body shop.”
Naturally, when a top is chopped,
the windshield, windows and backlight have to be cut down to match the
new roof contours. Glasscutters have a
rubber fixture that they attach to both
sides of the glass after marking where
it needs to be cut. At shops with the
latest technology, the windshields
may be put into something that resembles a big sandblasting booth.
A real fine, high-pressure nozzle is
used and the sand burns through the
glass and cuts it where it was marked.
Then, a belt sander is used to finish
the bottom edges.
Mark doesn’t use an English
wheel or specialty tools when he chops
a top. He likes to keep things as simple
as possible. But he pointed out that
some fabricators today use lasers and
plasma cutters. He uses a cut-off wheel
and a grinder and has machines that
shrink and stretch metal to make the
pieces fit.
A hobbyist with some knowledge
can chop a Model A coupe in his home
garage. A Sawz-All, a Magic Marker,
some tape, a welder and a grinder are
really all you need to do this job at
home. A shade tree body man with a

cut-off wheel and good welding skills,
who’s good at grinding, can chop a
Model A top, if he goes slow and takes
his time. It will require about four or
five hours for just the actual chopping
of the top and that doesn’t include metal finishing.
Mark Siedler stresses that the job
has to be well planned. You can’t just go
out to the shop with your cut-off wheel
and start cutting here and there. Follow
the old adage measure twice and cut
once. If you drop the top straight down
without cutting into the roof you’ve got
no metal finishing to do on the roof and
you save $1500 to $2000 worth of metalwork just on the roof.
If it’s your first chop, you might
want to take off just a little at a time.
Then, lay the top down and test the
fit. You may find that you need to
take off a little more in front. Then,
you might find you need another
fraction of an inch taken off the
whole thing to make it line up right.
It’s a trial and error process. You put
the roof on and off until it’s just right.
It seems laborious to work this way,
but remember you’re doing the whole
car without cutting the roof in half.
That means that there’s really a lot
less work to do. And some rodders
think a car done this way looks
better, too.

After owning so many cars he can’t recall them all, James Quast was chasing
his first ground-up hot rod. A self-declared Ford man, James planned on
going full FoMoCo with his roadster.

“
y theory is that if Henry Ford wanted his
cars to be powered by Chevy engines, he
would have put them in his cars,” James
said. “A Ford should be all Ford and a Chevy all Chevy.”
James started out with Fords when he was
in high school. He would alternate driving his ’48
Club Coupe and ’32 steel roadster to Orange High
School back in the day.
What could be cooler than a new ’29 Ford
body and frame from Ohio-based Brookville
Roadster? James contacted Don Lindfors, who had
previously built cars for him, and together they
contacted Brookville to have factory-fresh metal as
the base for a period-correct hot rod.
When the ‘29 build began in 2012, James and
Don debated over which drivetrain to use. Don had
ordered the firewall recessed to make room for a
302. But after giving it some thought, a flathead
was considered. Then a straight six. Finally, it was
decided to go with a Pinto four-cylinder.

Don said that James wasn’t that
excited when he first suggested the
2.3 four-cylinder up front. An old
hand at building hot rods, Don said he
wanted to do something very different
to power James’ roadster. It took a lot
of convincing to sell the four-banger
concept to James, he recalled, but Don
had already built James a ’29 roadster
pickup with a small block Ford so
something different was called for.
Webers
James searched around the Los
Angeles area and found a one-owner
authentic grocery getter ’77 Pinto wagon, 2.3 four-cylinder, automatic for sale
in Beverly Hills. The drivetrain was
pulled out of the Pinto, refreshed, and
transplanted into the ’29. But a stock 80
horsepower Pinto motor wouldn’t do.
By fall 2012, James had decided
he wanted the ’29 displayed at the upcoming 2013 Grand National Roadster
Show. The heat was on for Don to finish the car, which at this point was just
a loosely assembled body and rolling
chassis. Don called Esslinger Engineering, an El Monte, California-based
firm known for its four-cylinder Ford
performance products. Esslinger built
motors for Don when he raced Ford
Rangers in the desert. Dan Esslinger
worked up a package with one of the
its aluminum racing heads and performance camshafts.
Locating the cylinder head was
the easy part. Finding an intake to
work with the two two-barrel side draft
Webers that Don was adamant about
running was a challenge. Nearing the
point of giving up, Don found, through
a friend of a friend, the intake manifold
he and James needed.
“We got lucky,” Don said without
elaborating on his source.
To balance the look of the
motor, Don built a lakes style header,
modifying half of a small block Ford
set from Patriot Exhaust. When the
car was all together James found it
certainly wasn’t a dog. With over 180
horsepower in a less than 2000 pound
car, it’s a mover.
Maverick, too
Don recalled that overall the build
went smoothly. From the loose assembly to the final rush, the car didn’t fight

him, even during the self-imposed
three or four get-it-done deadline
months before the Roadster Show.
The roadster’s eight-inch rear end
came out of a Ford Maverick. One of
James’ friends had purchased the rear
for a build and ended up not using it.
Whittier, California-based Lime Works
was the source of the steering column
and wheel.
The front end, like the body and
frame, came from Brookville. Randy
Gertenberg’s R/T Paint and Body in
Orange, California, did the British
Racing Green paint job. A ’32 Ford
grille shell was sourced from C.W.
Moss in Orange.
With a Pinto four-banger up
front, not an everyday sight in a hot
rod, Don admits that the roadster gets
lots of attention.

years or more, so we find ourselves at
the same car shows fairly often. And
we’re both regulars at the Redneck
Rumble in Lebanon, Tennessee,
produced by another mutual longtime

friend, Tommy Williams. When we
bump into each other at shows, we
always discuss possible feature cars
that might be on the grounds. Lee
Rich’s cool Model A pictured here is
one we both homed in on at once.
Obviously, there’s no shortage of
Model A hot rods. Ford’s Model A was
produced in the millions and many
have survived, so they make great
fodder for a hot rod. The problem is
that lots of them look alike, so it takes
something special to catch our eyes
and stand out from the same ol’, same
ol’. This is one of those cars. Butch and

never made this configuration. Too
bad as it would have been a good seller.
Lee, who owns and operates a body
shop (Mr. Touchup’s in Memphis,
Tennessee) started with a 1930 Tudor
sedan body and whacked 18” out of
it. He also dropped the top 3¾” and
channeled the body 3” over the frame.
That’s a lot of slicin’ and dicin’! A
handmade bed by Robert Starnes
turned the whole affair into a pickup.
Inside, a Brookville ’32 Ford
instrument panel holds the gauges
above an ididit steering column with a
Mooneyes ‘flake steering wheel. Seats
are the desirable “Pony” buckets from
an early Mustang.
Power comes from a destroked
Chevy 400 small block, now with 377
cubic inches. It wears an Offenhauser
3x2 manifold with Rochester carbs.
Lakes style headers with baffles handle
exhaust gasses. That engine combo is
backed by a 700R4 transmission and
feeds to an 8” Ford rear with 3.73 gears.
Radial tires are wrapped around America Racing’s Torq-Thrust D wheels,
some of the coolest hot rod wheels ever.
Larry Burch of Burch’s Automotive
helped with the transmission and engine tune-up.
David Featherston at Lee’s shop
sprayed House of Kolor silver with just
a hint of Ice White Pearl mixed in.
He sprayed the frame and firewall a
contrasting pearlescent blue/black. It
really pops in person.
Turns out that our sighting of
