39th Annual Yadkin Valley Harvest Festival
(Including the Yadkin Cultural Arts Center)
By John Willingham
President of the Yadkin Arts Council
WELCOME…….On behalf of
the Yadkin Arts Council, we
are pleased to present the 39th
Annual Yadkin Valley Harvest
Festival. We pride ourselves
in being the longest running
annual festival in the Yadkin
Valley. Historically the festival
takes place on the third
Saturday in September.
As an outdoor festival,
we are always at the mercy
of Mother Nature. In 2004
Hurricane Ivan almost put
a damper on the festival.
Nonetheless, we welcomed
over 10,000 folks to downtown
Yadkinville that year. Last
year we had a wonderful day
weatherwise, and the festival
drew a crowd estimated at
15,000.
The festival will encompass
most of the downtown streets
in Yadkinville. The Health
Services area at State and
Elm streets will anchor one
end of the festival and the
Yadkin Cultural Arts Center
will be at the other end. In
between you will find a host of
vendors, demonstrations, kid’s
entertainment, and much,
much more. There will be
continuous entertainment on
the outdoor stage by the Arts
Center, with shaded seating
for those that come early.
Each year, our goal is to
update the festival with new
and interesting offerings.
At the same time, we try to
maintain its flavor and appeal,
making this a very special day
for our citizens. In addition
to the revamped lay-out last
year, we added Carnival Alley
on Main Street in front of
the library. This was such a
success with the kids that it
will return with even more
rides and entertainment.
New this year will be Ireland
Insurance beer garden and
Yadtel lounge. This adult
entertainment area features
the best in beers as well as
a lounge where you can sit
and relax while watching
the Saturday college football
games.
At some point you are
bound to get hungry. We
have you covered with our
mega food court, located at
the intersection of Elm and
Jackson Streets. There will

also be plenty of sheltered
seating conveniently located
right next to the food vendors.
Here you can relax under a
shade tent and enjoy your
meal. Or, if you just need a
little resting time, this is the
ideal place to sit down and
catch your breath.
The 39th Annual Yadkin
Valley Harvest Festival runs
from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. We
hope that you will make plans
to be a part of the fun and
excitement. It is truly a day to
celebrate life in Yadkin County.
If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact the
Yadkin Arts Council at 336679-2941.

Yadkin Arts Council announces fall series
The Yadkin Arts Council has been
working hard to put together a fantastic
series of events for the fall and winter
season. There will be something for
everyone, with events from comedy
to music and a very special holiday
extravaganza.
The series will kick off Sept. 25 and 26
at 7:30 p.m. with a Comedy Night at the
Willingham, starring Bill Blank.
“After the success we experienced
with the Baby Boomer Comedy Show
this past spring we learned that Yadkin
County likes stand-up comedy,” said
Cultural Arts Center Director Lindsay
Craven. “We’re exploring this area again
with another great stand-up comedian.
Bill has a great reputation and has been
featured on Spike TV as well as in Sports
Illustrated. His routine will be funny and
edgy but clean.”
Blank is an easy going everyman with
a wit as sharp as a razor, his act pushes
the envelope without pushing too far.
He challenges one’s sensibilities without
making him uncomfortable. In short, he
hits it out of the park and goes the extra
distance to earn the laugh. Earning the
respect of fellow comics and comedy
aficionados, Blank believes that it doesn’t
take an idiot, or a genius, to understand
great comedy. Funny is funny. And Bill is
funny. Tickets are $20.
Tickets already have sold out for the
Oct. 24 show David Holt presents “The
Big Splash: The Stories Behind the
Songs” with Will McIntyre.
“David Holt tickets unfortunately
sold out in mid-August, but we are so
glad that we are bringing our audience
performances that are in demand and
exciting enough to sell out the house,”
Craven said.
In “Big Splash,” four-time Grammy
Award winner David Holt and bass
player Will McIntyre let the audience
in on the unique tales behind some
of traditional music’s most intriguing
songs. From banjos to bones, bluegrass
to blues, David learned from the best —
Doc Watson, Roy Acuff, Etta Baker and
Earl Scruggs. Full of humor, music and
true tales, it’s a rousing good time.
“We were so fortunate to be introduced
to David Holt almost 12 years ago. We
had contracted with Doc Watson to
come and perform and he brought along
this fellow, David Holt, and we had no
idea who he was at the time but we were
taken with him and David has come back
many times and is a big supporter of our
theater. He was one of the first musicians
to come and play in the theater when it
opened. That night he told us that the
acoustics in the Willingham Theater are
the best he’s ever experienced and that
the connection between the audience
and performer were the best and I want
to come back and we’re just so excited
to have him back,” said Arts Council
President John Willingham.
On Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m., the arts
council will feature A Tribute to Paul
Robeson.
The show is described as a powerful
look at the many facets of Paul Robeson
the man, as well as Robeson the star.
An All-American athlete, a lawyer with
Columbia Law School credentials,
accomplished bass-baritone singer and
Broadway star, Robeson strived to rise
above the racism prevalent in the early
part of the 20th century. His triumph in
that struggle turned Robeson, as played
by Jason McKinney, into a modern day
hero. Tickets are $20.
The Willingham Theater’s Artistic
Director Ron Stacker Thompson said,
“Jason McKinney, an accomplished
classical singer and actor himself,
startlingly brings to life through song,
drama and comedy the incredible
person who was Paul Robeson. Not
surprisingly, Mr. McKinney has toured
this show throughout the United States
to rave reviews and sold out houses. The
Willingham is not only pleased, but very
fortunate to be able to include this show
in our fall/winter season”
A special holiday show featuring local
actors will be performed on Dec. 4, 5,
11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 6 and
13 at 3 p.m. Willingham Wonderland
is a magical journey to a place where
not only dreams come true but wishes
as well. A holiday extravaganza for
the entire family, filled with music,
dance and some very special surprises.
Written and directed by the Willingham
Theater’s Artistic Director Ron Stacker
Thompson and starring many of the
Willingham Workshop actors.
Tickets are $20.
The Fall Classic Film series will
feature the following:
October 3 at 1 p.m. - Animal House
October 31 at 1 p.m. - The Exorcist
November 14 at 1 p.m. - Easy Rider
December 19 at 1 p.m. - Miracle on
34th Street

Center or to purchase tickets, visit www.
