(Sara) 3 Joanne Gervais SBFC Meeting Minutes: January 27, 2013 The executive has passed a motion to create a web site and so we now have a domain name and space on a server. I am hoping to use Web Easy software to create the site (I ordered it for myself, don’t have it yet). We are hoping to have another person with experience help to get the site up. Anyone care to volunteer? This should help get our club better known and we should hopefully pick up more members. It’s also a good way to educate people about our beloved breed. On another note, membership renewals are now due. Please fill out the included membership form and send in to: Saint Bernard Fanciers of Canada, Box 241, Seven Sisters Falls, MB R0E 1Y0. I have set up a PayPal account should you wish to pay that way. Just send in your completed membership (fill out, scan and email) and I will send you an invoice. Cheques are fine too! Membership form is included in this newsletter. The next meeting of the SBFC will be held on Sunday, February 3rd on Chatzy. Times are 5 P.M. Mountain, 6 Central, 7 Eastern and 8 Atlantic. All members are more than welcome to attend. If you wish to participate, let me know and I’ll send an invitation along with an agenda and pertinent reports. It seems that something spe‐ mouvement ! Il semble que quelque chose spéciale devrait être faite pour ceci, notre premier Na onale. cial should be done for this, our first Na onal. As a young, struggling but determined club, we had to meet our CKC commitment of hos ng a Na onal this year or go back to square one. It would have been fabulous to have drawn more entries from Canada but the ming was unfortunate since it was only one week a er the American Na onal show. We certainly started with lousy weather but we were inside and dry. I had no dogs to show this year and that was strange! My me was spent se ng up the ring side table, lugging prizes, selling t‐shirts and cata‐ logues, expedi ng as much as possible and helping wherever needed. I also ferried our judges back to their hotel at the end of the day. We do have video of the en re event but at this me, I have not found a so ware program to downsize it so that it will fit on a DVD. I believe it runs to 20 GB or so. Any help would be appreciated in that area. 14 SAINT BERNARD FANCIERS OF CANADA VOLUME I, ISSUE 1 JANUARY 2013 JANVIER 2012 NATIONAL SPECIALTY REPORT ‐ RAPPORT NATIONAL DE SPÉCIALITÉ Huge thanks to all the exhibitors for their support in this and especially to those who drove hundreds of miles to help us celebrate this event. Also huge thanks to Mark Grant who came from Nova Sco a at his own expense to judge sweeps and par cipate in the awards presenta ons. And it was a celebra on! The Saint Bernard has been so long without a Na‐ onal presence and it is our me! It was so wonderful to meet members in person that we had been communica ng with by phone and email. I hope everyone had a great me and I enjoyed watching the lovely dogs. The catalogue is really well done, Joanne's brainchild and beautifully accomplished. My compliments to all the membership for their contributions to the trophies and sponsorship of the classes. The medallions for the winning entries are very handsome and a really lovely memento of the occasion. The only regret is that more members did not attend with their dogs. You missed a really fun time. I sure hope 2014 sees more Canadian entries! You are the connec on be‐ tween the exhibitors and the judge. Here's a run‐ down of what a ring steward does. A er introducing yourself to the Specialty Judge, you go to the Show Secretary to collect the Specialty Judge's Sheets, then proceed to the Spe‐ cialty Ring. You confer with the Specialty Chair, and go over the prizes, ribbons, rose es and any addi onal items that are going to be awarded. You separate the Judge's pages from the Ring Stew‐ ard's, and place the Judge's on the table, ready for use. Once the Judge arrives, you ask the Judge how they would like you to bring the dogs in the ring, and how they want them placed for awards. You go over the order of judging, and how the Judge would like the ribbons placed on the table. At the appointed me for the Specialty, you an‐ nounce to the Exhibitors that the Specialty has be‐ gun, and call the first class into the ring. Once they are in the ring, you make sure you have all the ap‐ propriate ribbons ready. Then the race is on! You have to make sure all the trophies, prizes, rose es and ribbons are in order so none will be forgo en. While a class is in the ring, you make sure the next class is on deck. As the Judge announces the class awards, you write them down, calling each one out as you mark them, to ensure that the Judge agrees with them. Awards are handed out, and the next class is called in. You make sure you tell the han‐ dlers which dogs will have to go into the ring again for further compe on. This goes on un l Best In Specialty. Muzzle short, vertical depth was greater than the length of muzzle, eyes medium size dark brown had intelligent, friendly look Overall I had a very nice selection of dogs that I think will improve the breed All the dogs were clean and well presented by their owners and handlers. I gave each handler lots of time to show their dog in a natural silhouette or stacked. They all did very well. It was a hard decision selecting the winners but that’s what the shows are all about for the betterment of the breed The show was well organized thanks to the executive and all the hard working club members. Dinner after the show was very nice. We all had a good time, food was great with the losers and winners being at the same table (holy hanna ) They all were talking about their breeding programmes and improving the breed. The Fort Garry Kennel Club also must be commended for their beautiful grounds and spacious rings and their great hospitality. I hope you enjoyed my company as I did yours. Thanks for asking me to do your first specialty show. Remember at this specialty everyone was a winner by owning the best breed in the world the Saint Bernard. Good luck for your future shows. Yours truly David Paterson 31 And in the end... And so our first Na onal is behind us. We had some highs, some lows and we certain‐ ly had some glitches but overall, I hope we all had fun. The Fort Garry Kennel club, our hosts, were tremendously accommoda ng, providing a large grooming area and a Saint ‐sized ring to exhibit in. Good sportsman‐ ship prevailed and we all parted ways with fond memories of Saints striding around the ring in all their glory. Already, the Quebec members are working on our next Specialty that will be held in 2014. Sites are being evaluated with the hopes of a rac ng more American entries and giving us all more me to plan this event. A show doesn`t just ``happen``, it takes a dedicated team to plan, organize and host such an event. Let`s all help sup‐ port our 2014 Specialty and get involved. Hugs to your furry friends!
