Here we are only weeks away from spring break and the start of the final quarter of the school year-where has the time gone? This period of the year is exciting because we have meaningful work to accomplish in addition to memorable activities that take place near the end of the year. Perhaps the best part of spring is an evitable increase in school spirit with the warmer temperatures and limited time together as a Bruin Family. The focus of this month at Creek is the TCAP/CSAP assessment that will take place March 6th-8th. This assessment is extremely important to both the individual students and the school in general. As a school, we are evaluated, graded, and rated based on formulas that result in a great deal of weight toward CSAP/TCAP performance. As many of you have read in this parent mailer in previous months, I am thrilled with our ACT and AP scores. In fact, last year we earned some of the highest scores we have seen in our school history. At the most recent school board meeting, I was presented with the John Irwin School of Excellence Award that is presented to all schools in the state of Colorado who perform at specific levels in state assessments. Overall, Cherry Creek High School is an exceptional school that offers a comprehensive education that cannot be matched. However, we do not show the same outstanding performance we are accustomed to when it is time to take the CSAP, or TCAP, as it is being called this year. The CSAP is important to schools across the state of Colorado, but it also plays a role in a student’s ability to present themselves as a scholar. State law requires that every school list the CSAP/TCAP scores on all student transcripts. While college admission officers do invest the majority of their interest in applicant’s GPA, course load, recommendations, and scores on the ACT and SAT, it is always possible that they will look at CSAP/ TCAP scores to verify that a student score is as strong on the state assessment as in other areas. It is always in a student’s best interest to demonstrate that they care about learning and what type of scholar they are on a consistent basis. My request to parents and 9th and 10th students is simple when it comes to the CSAP/TCAP. Give your best effort and show how you have grown as a student. I am confident that when our students give the CSAP/TCAP their very best, we will hit the ball out of the park like we do on every other assessment. At that point, Cherry Creek will be the A+/#1 school in all rating systems that we know her to be. In other news, it is that time of year again that we begin planning and registering for classes for the 2012-2013 school year. My advice to you is to initiate conversations with your child about this process to be sure that your child is making decisions based on what is best for him/her. Too often I see unhappy and unhealthy kids who are trying to be something they are not. I want every student to challenge themselves and learn as much as possible. The important piece to consider is that challenging oneself is unique for every individual. Do not hesitate to call or email if you want my additional insight on this process. Finally, we have a series of celebrations that I do want to highlight in my message this month. Cherry Creek High School is the home of the Colorado Science Competition State Champions. Our team of science students won the state title on January 28th and will compete at Nationals this spring. We received word last month that 25 of our 28 National Merit Semifinalists have advanced to Finalist status. We are pleased to welcome Dave Logan to the Bruin Family as our new football coach. He is a wonderful coach and, more importantly, an outstanding role model for our student/athletes. And the Unified basketball team for students with disabilities completed their inaugural season with spirited members. The program is a perfect example of what is right in schools when all members of the studentbody have a voice and opportunity to shine. I wish everyone in the “Bruin Family” a happy and healthy spring. GO CREEK! Sincerely, Ryan T. Silva Principal Bruins Unified Basketball Team 2012 ACT EXAM TCAPs at a Glance (Transitional Colorado Assessment Program) The Colorado state ACT Exam for current juniors will be given on Tuesday, APRIL 24th. All juniors will test from 7:10 a.m. to 11:05 a.m. WHAT: TCAPs are the tests that have replaced the CSAPs. Freshmen and sophomores will take the TCAPs at school on March 6th-8th There will be NO SCHOOL for freshmen, sophomores and seniors that morning. School will resume for everyone at 11:15 a.m. (5th period). Buses will pick up at the regularly scheduled times for juniors. Buses will pick up again four hours after the regularly scheduled time for freshmen, sophomores and seniors. For example, if your sophomore is usually picked up at 6:08 a.m., he or she will be picked up at 10:08 a.m. WHY: TCAP scores indicate the level of a student’s achievement and measure that student’s growth over time. TCAPs measure how students compare skill wise to all other students in Colorado, an important indication of college readiness. TCAP scores and growth are the #1 tools for rating schools in Colorado. HOW DO WE RANK? Our 2011 results placed us #3 in the district (behind Grandview and Cherokee Trail) Our median growth in Writing was only 48% - last in the district. CCHS is ranked 50th out of 324 public high schools by Colorado School Grades. WHY DO THEY COUNT FOR STUDENTS? TCAP scores are reported on all transcripts as part of students’ permanent records. College applications require transcripts. Colleges look at CCHS’s ranking in Colorado. WHAT CHANGES IS CCHS IMPLEMENTING? Students will test with teachers they know, rather than alphabetically. 2012 tests will be re-ordered so that the Writing draft and the final Writing essay will no longer be on the same day. We will have new Academic Awards next year for students who show impressive growth from 2011 to 2012. WHAT CAN PARENTS DO TO HELP? Discuss your students’ 2011 scores and growth percentiles (click on the CDE Student Growth icon on your student’s Power School home page). Reinforce that our 2011 test results do not reflect our students’ abilities. Encourage your student to set an improvement goal for 2012 and to do his/her best. Do not allow your student to “opt out” of the test, which can affect our ranking. Show what you know and how you have grown! SELF SCHEDULING for SCHOOL YEAR 2012-2013 CCHS students will self-schedule for the 2012-2013 school year in the Registrar’s office: 11th grade scheduling by assigned appointment: April 23, 25, 26, 27, 2012 There will be no self-scheduling on Tuesday, April 24th due to the scheduled ACT Test 10th grade scheduling by assigned appointment: April 30, May 1, 2, 3, 2012 9th grade scheduling by assigned appointment: May 7, 8, 9, 10, 2012 Appointment times will be available to pick up in the hallway in front of Activities: April 16, 2012 - 11th grade April 17, 2012 - 10th grade April 18, 2012 - 9th grade Students who do not schedule at their assigned time may schedule on the next self-scheduling date during the student’s off period or the next week on a self-scheduling date during the student’s off period. Look out because there is a lot more ahead! We hope you will stay involved by volunteering at events, attending spring sports events and Fine Arts productions. Don’t forget all of the other wonderful Club and Co-curricular happenings. So many of our kids are involved in activities that will take them to local, state and national competitions. We congratulate all of the students, devoted teachers, administrators, staff and parents who support and encourage every level of success. It truly takes the hard work of so many to make Creek the exceptional school community that it is. THANK YOU ALL!! Enjoy your Spring Break. Deb Hester and Penny Malloy CCHS PTCO Co-Presidents Celebrating Volunteers...Thank you for all you do!!! On February 9th, in the Fine Arts Theatre lobby, an amazing group gathered for our Volunteer Coffee. It was a wonderful time to connect and honor the numerous hours that so many people have given to our school. To all of the volunteers who were unable to attend, please know that you are very appreciated. Our PTCO meeting followed with the introduction of this year’s CCHS Teachers of the Year, Steve Lohman and Jim Conrad. These two teachers represent the best of the best at Creek. Please thank them if you get the opportunity! A very special thank you goes to Nathan Montgomery and Girl’s 21 (under the direction of Adam Cave) for their amazing performances at our event. We all enjoyed and appreciated every note! MARCH PTCO Meeting Change! Due to TCAP’s, the March PTCO General Meeting has been moved to Friday, March 9th at 9 a.m. in the Fine Arts Lobby. This meeting will take on a different format from our usual meetings. YOU will have a chance to speak your mind and ask questions! Have you ever wanted to ask questions of the Administrators and didn’t have the opportunity? Do you want to know why Creek does things differently from other CCSD High Schools? Do you have any suggestions for what the PTCO or Creek should be doing differently? Here is your chance to SPEAK UP! Come prepared with your questions and our panel of Administrators will be on hand to provide answers. In addition, you will hear a state of the school update for our Principal, Mr. Ryan Silva, and hear about upcoming activities you’ll want to know about. TALK ABOUT WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS – CCHS Accountability Committee Thank you to Sue Bouck and Debbie Keesling for making the Volunteer Appreciation Coffee such a successful event. The Cherry Creek High School Accountability Committee meets one Tuesday evening of each month from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in the West Main Office Conference Room. Thanks also to Nikki Gordon and Mary Ann Hampton for all of their work to fill our PTCO slate for the 2012 - 2013 school year and to all of you who have said “yes’ to their requests! Thank you to our Brown Bag chairs (Dessa Bokides and Susan Rothenberg) who do a great job encouraging working parents to meet monthly to hear what is going on at Creek. Thanks to Diane Robinson and Mancy Jolliffe for managing Creek Accountability and Judy Sussman for her work on District Accountability! Thank you to Karen Fisher for keeping the community informed with Community Connections. We look at how Cherry Creek High School is meeting its accountability goals for excellence and equity, for college and post-secondary success, for a safe and caring environment, and for partnering with students, parents and community members in the education process. Please let us know if you are interested in regularly attending our meetings, and feel free to contact us with questions. Accountability Committee Meeting dates for 2011-2012: March 20, April 17, *May 8 The May date is a change from the orginal schedule PTCO Minutes of General Meeting Thursday, February 9, 2012 Meeting was called to order at 9:20 a.m. by co-president Deb Hester. Girls’ 21 choir performed for the group. A special thanks also to Nathan Montgomery for his wonderful guitar playing before the choir arrived. The minutes from the January general meeting were approved by a unanimous vote. All PTCO volunteers were thanked for their tireless efforts in support of Creek. Student Senate: Wish Week is February 27th-March 2nd. The first Make a Wish recipient is Haley, an 11 year old with lymphoma who wants to take a Disney Cruise. The second request comes from Jeremy Bloom’s foundation. James is a 69 year old veteran who loves to swing dance. He had not been home to Minnesota in quite some time because of his physical restrictions so he will be given a trip home. Events during the week include putt-putt/karaoke, food sales (burritos and a night at Pasquinis), a Talent Show, a celebrity basketball game on Wed. at 7:00 p.m. (parents are encouraged to attend) and the Pep Assembly on Friday. The students hope to raise at least $10,000. Last year’s total was $25,000, so they would like to get close to that amount again. Principal’s Report: Congratulations to the Teachers of the Year, Steve Lohman (science teacher, x-country coach) and Jim Conrad (business teacher and DECA leader). Creek 101 is finishing up and the freshmen are being given help before pre-registration for next year’s classes. The attendance at Snowball was incredibly poor. Athletics-Swimming has state this Saturday (they ended up in 2nd place, congrats). Wrestling regional’s are also coming up. Four Creek students/alum are being honored by Colorado Sportswomen of the Year, Ryan McLane, Jordan Colter, Bonnie Brandon and Bailey Zerr. We are excited to have Dave Logan as our new football coach. And despite all rumors to the contrary, Mr. Silva never had any conversations with Coach Logan until after he was fired by Mullen. Mr. Silva is using some of his discretionary money to hire an after school security guard. Currently, all security guards shifts end at the end of the school day. The new hire will work from 1:00 a.m.-6:00 a.m.. Mr. Silva then introduced Karen Fisher from the committee he formed to determine how to insure students take the CSAP tests more seriously. Karen explained the five bullet points the committee is trying to instill in the students: (1) CSAP/TCAP measure growth now, (2) we are number three in district, (3) it does count on your permanent record, (4) show school pride and (5) what is your school goal. Committee Reports: Day at the Capitol has been changed to March 20th. The meeting was adjourned at 10:42 am. CREEK COUNSELING CONNECTION Everything is connected…no one thing can change by itself.” ~ Paul Hawken THIRD QUARTER BLUES Is your son or daughter struggling academically? Is your son or daughter tired of school? Is your son or daughter wishing for winter and third quarter to be over? If you answered YES to any of these questions, please read on. Third quarter is by far the longest and hardest quarter. Third quarter has no real breaks, except for President’s Day, and it is dark and cold when students come to school, and for many of our students it is dark and cold when they leave school. Third quarter is the quarter that students tend to slip academically. Particularly because of the weather and time change but also because they have reached that point when they think they know it all and are bored. Below are some pointers to help give them some motivation to make it until SPRING BREAK. In school: Get back in the habit of writing down homework assignments. Get back in a study routine. Make an effort to see teachers and ask for help outside of class. Spend off periods studying. See counselor or on-call counselor for a pep talk, study tips and tutor lists. Outside school: Have a set study schedule. Study at a desk or table. Have a homework plan. Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. Go to bed early. And enjoy the snow; it will be gone soon!!! We hope this helps with some ideas to get through until Spring Break. As always please call, or better yet, email your son or daughter’s counselor if you have more concerns or questions. ACTIVITIES The month of February is a short month, and yet the students participating in Activities make good use of each of these days. Although it seems hard to believe, there are still new clubs that are forming. So, if you know of a student who hasn’t quite found his/her niche, feel free to contact the Activities Office. Unfortunately, the 19th Annual Diversity Conference ended up being cancelled due to the record setting snowstorm the first week of February. However, midway through the month, a local restaurant hosted the fifty students who had worked so hard for nearly a year to plan the event. During this month, CCHS hosted Ethnic Fest. The celebration was well attended, and the consensus was that general merriment was had by all. Although I’m writing this article prior to the return of the following groups from their trips, I know that they all surely represented us well: Speech and Debate traveled to Berkley, California, the Troubadors traveled to San Antonio, and DECA concluded the month with the DECA State Conference in Colorado Springs. The end of February marked our 3rd Annual Wish Week. The students, parents, and community have always responded in such a heartwarming way to this week’s aims. Thank you for your support and for helping our students learn a valuable lesson on how to show we should care for others, both young and old. During March, we will conclude Wish Week with our student and faculty Talent Show on March 1st in the Fine Arts Theatre. Students, parents, and community members are invited to attend the event, with all proceeds being donated to the Make-a-Wish Foundation and to Jeremy Bloom’s Wish of a Lifetime Foundation. Friday, March 2nd, we will follow assembly schedule 1 (see page 6 of Bear Facts). During the assembly, our students will meet our two Wish Week recipients: Haley, an 11 year old with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia, who wishes to go on a Disney Cruise and Mr. Thomson, a 69 year old former Marine, whose wish is to travel back home to Minnesota to see friends and family after a 20 year absence. Once Wish Week concludes, activities at Creek will take a back seat to the TCAP testing. However, this year’s spring musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, running from March 14th-March 17th, will give our students the perfect opportunity to celebrate all that Creek’s Fine Arts Department and Theatre have to offer. Please be sure to check the CCHS website for show times and to purchase tickets in advance. Tickets are available at the ticket booth in the Fine Arts Building and online. In addition, back by popular demand will be the pairing of the Jazz Band with the Union Street Jazz Choir on March 20th in the Fine Arts Theatre. And, finally, to conclude the month, Girl’s 21 will head on their international singing tour to Vienna and Prague. A Senior Information Brochure will be sent home with 3rd quarter grades to all families who have a student graduating. In this brochure are important dates and information about graduation and post-graduate planning. This information is extremely important! Graduation Performance Auditions are April 10th and 11th. Students who would like information about auditions can stop by the Activities Center; students can sign up for auditions from February 27th until March 23rd in the Activities Center as well. It’s never too late to get involved in clubs and extracurricular activities. Student Senate elections will take place during April, and there are many clubs still looking for new members. Likewise, interest meetings for students interested in Senate, induction ceremonies, and applications for co-curricular clubs or community service-oriented clubs will be popping up soon, so please remind your students to keep their eyes and ears open. Finally, I always welcome students to come to the Activities Center if they have questions about clubs. It’s been an interesting winter so far here in Colorado, which has made for a fun and adventurous COLT club winter. We all know the phrase in Colorado, “If you like the weather now, just wait five minutes…” Well because of the lack of ice so far this season, the ice climbing trip morphed into a wonderful day of rock climbing. On Saturday, January 28th, COLT trip participants traveled to Table Mountain in Golden. What started out as a cold day turned into a beautiful Saturday filled with harnesses, helmets, rocks, and Cherry Creek students defying gravity. Climbing competitions number five and six were full of excitement with the girls team taking 1st and the boys taking 2nd for competition number five. At competition five, Aaron Bugh led the way for the CCHS boys by taking second with a score of 4495, while Katie Craighead took third for the girls, with a score of 1760. Competition six was a bouldering only competition and it provided much entertainment. The competition was especially exciting in the girls category, as Katie Craighead and Kayleigh Linfors from Thunder Ridge High School, fought till the end with an exciting tie-breaking climb for first place. It was a hard-fought battle, but in the end, Katie Craighead and Alexis Lahana took second and third respectively for CCHS. Aaron Bugh climbed his way to a first place victory for the boys. Overall, our boys team is currently second place in the league, while the CCHS girls are leading the way in first place. It has been a great season so far for the COLT climbing team! Join us for the following adventures coming up this month….. March 1st, 3:00 p.m. Climbing Technique Seminar (CTS) March 5th, 3:15 p.m. Ouray Pre-trip #2 March 8th-11th Ouray Ice Climbing trip!! We are requiring that all girls attend with at least one parent/ guardian per girl. GO CREEK! Cherry Creek High School Girls' Lacrosse 2011 State Champions On The Band Beat The Percussion Ensemble is hard at work preparing for Rocky Mountain Percussion Association (RMPA) competitions beginning in March, with finals on April 7th. This year’s show consists of three pieces: “Jadoo”, “It’s Alive”, and “Frankenstein”, all arranged by Chris Smith, a renowned composer and teacher. Director Dana Slabaugh says, “The show is incredibly challenging. The Ensemble is doing great tackling something this hard. The music is crazy-fun rock and roll. The kids love it.” Slabaugh is supported by assistant Jeff Gleason and student directors Ellen Singel and Jackson Wolfe. The Percussion Ensemble, which competes in the RMPA Scholastic Concert World division, earned second place last year in a four-school match-up. Perennial favorite, Bear Creek High School (Lakewood), has won for the past three seasons. Wolfe stated, “We are going after Bear Creek this year. Our music is fun and people are familiar with it--especially ‘Frankenstein’.” This 1973 Edgar Winter Group piece was featured in the movie “Wayne’s World 2” and on The Weather Channel’s “Local on the 8s”. Good luck to Creek’s talented Percussion Ensemble! LIGHTS UP ON CREEK THEATRE! Alone in a Utah canyon, his right arm crushed and pinned by an 800 pound boulder, Ralston somehow found the will to live. He will share his remarkable story of survival at the 18th Annual Cherry Creek Schools Foundation Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, at the Hyatt Regency Denver Tech Center, 7800 E. Tufts Ave. Individual tickets are $100 and may be purchased online at www.blacktie-colorado.com/rsvp. Enter event code CCSF315. The theme of this year’s luncheon is “Mastering Excellence in Education.” As a student at Cherry Creek High School, Ralston participated in National Honor Society, Model United Nations, Jazz Band and lacrosse. After his graduation in 1993, he attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he earned degrees in mechanical engineering and French, as well as a minor in piano. He then worked as a mechanical engineer for Intel, before giving up his job to pursue his passion for the great outdoors. Ralston documented his near-death experience in his best-selling autobiography “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” which was adapted for the 2010 Oscar nominated film “127 Hours” directed by Danny Boyle and starring James Franco. “We are honored to have Aron Ralston share his compelling and inspiring story with the Cherry Creek Schools community,” said Foundation Board Chairperson Michele Beserra. Slam poet Jovan Mays, a graduate of Smoky Hill High School, and students from Fox Hollow Elementary will also perform at the luncheon, which is presented by the Cherry Creek Schools Foundation and sponsored by EKS&H, 1ST Bank and tw telecom. The luncheon benefits the Cherry Creek School District and its 50,000 students. Three students will receive special scholarships during the luncheon: Two students will receive the AVID Giving Generation Scholarship, which recognizes exceptional AVID students.
