A Few Thoughts on Decking
Beronio Lumber has been serving Bay Area builders for over
90 years. Founded by Antone V. Beronio in 1911, the original
yard was located on Powell and Beach streets on what was San
Francisco’s busy waterfront. Lumber was then shipped by sea.
We moved to our present location in San Francisco in 1941. From
the beginning, we have always tried to provide a wide range of
quality forest products.
A deck offers one of the
most dramatic, yet simple
improvements you can
make to your home, forming
a link between home and
nature. A deck provides an
outdoor room.
Wood has historically been
the material of choice for the
decking itself. Wood is ideally
suited for bridging the gap
between the two worlds. It
affords a natural look, is easy
to work, structurally strong,
and comfortable to the touch.
When first installed, a quality wood deck can have the appearance
of a beautiful, hand finished wood floor, but there is a big difference
between an exterior deck and an interior wood floor. A deck is
exposed to the elements. Wood is a “natural” material, and is
constantly affected by the world around it. So, it is a good idea
to understand just what happens to wood left to the elements.
A deck is subjected to a good deal more abuse than an interior
floor. While nature, in time, will leave its fingerprint, good
construction techniques along with the periodic application of
a pigmented UV sealer will go a long way towards preserving
the natural color of the wood and keeping the deck looking fresh
by moderating the effects of the elements. In some settings,
the rustic “weathered” gray appearance is preferred and a
no-maintenance option is chosen where the wood is left to age
to blend with its natural setting.
In choosing a decking material it is important to be realistic in your
expectations. Just how much “character” you can live with, along
with budget concerns, will, in large part, determine what deck is
appropriate for you. Different woods and grades have different
properties. The key is to determine your prime design concern
and find what wood best meets the requirements of your
particular application.
If wear is the prime concern, then long-wearing hardwoods may
be the answer. If knots and an occasional seasoning check aren’t
a bother, then Deck Heart Redwood remains a sound choice.
If you are above ground with good ventilation where rot is not
likely, then Clear A Sap Redwood could be a nice economical
alternative to more expensive clear heartwood grades. Composites
like Trex Transcends are often used where a uniform, static look is
preferred with low maintenance.
Whichever way you are leaning, we look forward to working with
you on your project and discussing the relative merits of each
decking product. It is our hope to provide the widest selection of
decking products available in the Bay Area. Be it a long favored
standard like Deck Heart, Clear or Heart B Redwood, beautiful
exotics like Ipé, Machiche or Cumaru, or a composite like TREX™,
we have a product to meet your design needs.
We are always exploring new products and approaches in our
effort to provide you with the very best decking. This catalog
is offered as a “snapshot” of what we are doing right now.
Our decking program is evolving as we explore new ideas and
market opportunities. It is best to check with us before writing
your final specifications.
Notes on Redwood
California is home to one of the world’s most unique trees, the
coastal redwood. This remarkable tree has been commercially
harvested since the Gold Rush, and literally helped to build
California. The unique qualities of redwood lumber invited over
harvesting in the past, and the quality of both the forest and the
lumber suffered.
Now, thanks to the enlightened forestry practices of firms like
Humboldt Redwood, both the land and the lumber are making a
comeback. We proudly feature Humboldt stock because they are
dedicated to preserving, improving and growing this wonderful
resource. They are sensitive to the land and the animals that make
their home there. They leave the old growth trees in the forest, and
selectively harvest to promote the health and future of the entire
ecosystem. Harvest rates are well below the annual growth rates,
and the average tree size increases. Thanks to them, redwood will
remain a wise choice for generation after generation, one that is
locally harvested and brings jobs back to California. The nice thing
is that choosing Humbolt Redwood for your project is one of the
best things you can do for the environment.
The Commercial
Redwood Forest
Today’s commercial forests
are predominately young
growth. These are privately
owned lands where
redwood mills and tree
farmers have planted and
grown redwood trees
specifically to be harvested.
Less than 8% of today’s
redwood lumber production
comes from virgin old
growth forests. The redwood
industry is relying on young growth timber for the bulk of its
production. Today, California’s Forest Practice Act, the strictest in
the nation, requires that every harvest operation must be reviewed
in advance and approved by the California Department of Forestry
and Fire Protection. If an adequate number of trees are not left on
the harvest site, state law requires the landowners to replant to
assure that a new stand is established. The law further requires the
State Board of Forestry “…to provide for protection of soil, air, fish,
wildlife and water resources.”
Planning the
Perfect Deck
Good planning and careful
attention to detail are part
of every successful project.
Fortunately, the California
Redwood Association (CRA)
provides some wonderful
literature for both design and
detailing. Redwood Deck Construction, in particular, is a
great resource. Copies are usually available in the office.
It can also be downloaded directly at ww.calredwood.org.
REDWOOD
DR16
2x6 S/Dry Redwood Deck Heart
Deck Heart is one of our most popular decking products. The RIS (Redwood
Inspection Service) Standard Specification for Grades of California Lumber (1997)
describe it as “a grade of redwood suited for exterior walking surfaces such as
decks where specific design values are required in combination with an attractive
appearance”. It is a second growth, mixed grain wood with small-to-medium
sized knots. Deck Heart is cut from the naturally durable red heartwood from
which redwood gets both its name and reputation for durability. We are proud
to offer wood sourced from the Humboldt Redwood Company – a leader in the
sustainable forestry practices. This grade is also available on a special order basis
with FSC certification under D16F.
PROS: Good availability on all lengths. Dry wood. Easy to finish. Inexpensive.
Locally harvested.
CONS: Some face and end checking. Allows knots.
DR26
2x6 Dry Clear Heart Redwood
Clear All Heart is a grade of exceptional quality. The wood has a uniformly high
appearance. Most pieces are entirely clear with minimal defect. The lumber is
cut from the red heartwood for maximum durability. It is sold on a random
length basis.
PROS: Uniform appearance. Durable, clear and dry. Easy to finish. Locally harvested.
CONS: Expensive. Limited availability of lengths. If FG, face can be subject to checking.
DR46
2x6 Air Dried Redwood Heart B Decking
Heart B Redwood represents good value in “clear heart type” appearance grade
decking. This architectural grade is cut from all durable red heartwood and has
few, if any knots, and is selected to offer one good face and edge.
PROS: A
ll red durable heartwood. Clear-type appearance. Locally harvested in
California.
CONS: E
xpensive. Limited availability of lengths. Some face and end checking.
DR56 (Pictured on the front cover)
2x6 S/Dry Redwood Clear A (Sapwood) S4S
The RIS 1997 Grade Book describes #105 Clear as “a high quality finish grade of
the same general quality as Clear Heart” with “the principal difference between the
two grades is that Clear generally contains sapwood”. The lumber is free of knots,
dried to 19% moisture content (S/Dry), and of good architectural appearance.
Second growth wood yields a good percentage of this grade, so this knot free
grade is surprisingly affordable, usually selling at only a 15% to 20% premium to
Deck Heart. The only limitation is that DR56 should be limited to above ground
applications that do not require the decay resistance of 100% heartwood lumber.
Our stock is sourced from Humboldt Redwood.
PROS: Least expensive clear wood deck. Plentiful with long lengths available. Dry.
CONS: White sapwood does not have the rot resistance of the red heartwood.
DC 26
2x6 Dry Red Cedar Clear Heart Vertical Grain
CEDAR
DC 26 is a premium architectural quality softwood deck that features clear,
uniform vertical grain heartwood. Vertical Grain virtually eliminates the common
deck problems of cupping, twisting, grain raise, and face checking. Be it hot,
dry sun or cool, damp fog, this deck is uniquely suited to the dramatic climate
changes of our region. Sold on a random length basis.
PROS: Stable, uniform appearance. Limited, if any checking and light weight.
CONS: Expensive. Lengths subject to availability.
DP26
2x6 Port Orford Cedar D Grade
Port Orford Cedar is found just inland along the southern coast of Oregon roughly
450 to 490 miles north of San Francisco. It is the strongest of all the cedars and
has been used for a wide range of exterior applications including boat-building,
stadium seats, and glu-lam beams. The heartwood is naturally durable. The
lumber is characterized by its smooth finish and is not subject to grain raise
making it a good choice for seating. Our D Grade is graded on 1 face and edge.
The majority of the faces are clear with minimal knot defect. “D” Grade does allow
for some defects such as wane or skip dressing on the back or edge. However,
Port Orford D is a great value in clear type decking.
PROS: Smooth, strong and even texture. Local, (approximately 490 miles). Easy to work
with. Light color good for driftwood look. Value priced.
CONS: P
rone to face checking in hot sun. Extractive tannin spots can be noticeable
against light background before wood weathers to gray. Grade allows sapwood
which doesn’t have same rot resistance as the heartwood.
TREX Transcend Composite Decking
TREX was a pioneer in composite decking, and remains the market leader.
We offer their complete line but Transcend is our primary stock profile. It is made
of 95% recycled materials including plastic shopping bags, reclaimed wood and
sawdust. Transcend has a unique nearly indestructible shell which protects the
exposed surfaces. The shell’s proprietary 9-element formulation produces a

5/4 x 6 (1” x 5-1/2”) Mataverde Grooved Ipé
Ipé is the hardest, strongest material that is appropriate for decking and outdoor
structures and Mataverde® Ipé from Northern Brazil is the best of the best. Ipé is
a remarkable wood that is naturally slip, rot, termite, and fire resistant. Ipé has
the potential to last generations so it is important to buy the best possible wood.
Mataverde Premium Ipé has established their own First Export Quality grade to
provide the best possible product. We have sold Ipé for years, and it is obvious
that Mataverde Ipé is simply the best. Just look at the lumber pile and you will
see the difference. Use Mataverde Ipé for your deck and you will experience the
difference. We stock Mataverde in other sizes as well and it is available in decking,
dimensional lumber, posts beams, timbers, porch flooring and railing parts.
PROS: Longest service life for wood decking. Air Dried. Rot and fire resistant.
Stable.
HARDWOOD
CONS: Density requires carbide tooling. Some face checking. Expensive.
DRC56
5/4 X 6 Mataverde Premium Cumaru
Cumaru is an extremely hard, dense and durable high density hardwood that is
surpassed only by Ipé in terms of strength. Like Ipé, Cumaru possesses a Class A
fire rating and is naturally resistant to decay and insects. Its tough inter-grown grain
offers extra slip resistance that is appreciated in commercial settings. Cumaru is an
excellent value priced alternative to Ipé. Mataverde® Red Cumaru is kiln dried and
provides better stability than other Cumaru in the market.
PROS: Very good service life. Kiln Dried. Slip Resistant. Cheaper than Ipé.
CONS: Coarser texture. Less stable than Ipé.
DM56
5/4 X 6 Mataverde Premium Machiche
Mataverde® Machiche is an FSC certified premium hardwood decking that offers
solid performance characteristics. While not quite as dense as Ipé or Cumaru,
Machiche is nearly twice as dense as Red Oak. It is long wearing and has excellent
stability and rot resistance. Machiche has a rich brown color and the grain recalls
Teak in its open texture. It is also very stable. Mataverde wood is kiln dried and
sourced from the finest Lonchocarpus Castilloi logs. Special Order Only.
PROS: FSC Certified. Stable. Long Wearing. Clean Weathering. Good Value.
CONS: Tallies run heavy 8’ to 11’. Limited availability of long lengths.
StoneDeck Natural Deck Material
StoneDeck™ combines premium-quality natural slates, granites and quartzite
with a high strength composite backing. This system features a fastening matrix
that connects to the deck frame while interlocking all structural panels in place.
There is no mortar or grout. The high-strength panels and interlocking matrix
form a structure that is flexible, yet strong enough to support 4,000 pounds
per square foot.
Bison Level.It Ipé Deck Tiles
DT1 1.65” x 24” x 24” Bison Ipé Smooth Tile
DT3 1.65” x 24” x 24” Bison Ipé Reed Face Tile
The Bison Level. It® Deck tile is a premium grade deck ideally suited to raised
and roof deck applications. The tiles are assembled using kiln dried 1x3 faces
fastened to 3 Ipé runners with stainless steel screws. They are strong, stable
and very sound under foot. The natural durability, fire resistance and density
of Ipé lumber coupled with the high quality construction make these tiles
suitable to both residential and commercial use. They are available with either
a smooth (DT1) or reeded (DT3) face. The smooth face tile is our most popular
tile, but the reeded face tile is often specified when added slip resistance is
required.
Both tiles are designed to work seamlessly with the Bison Level. It adjustable
deck supports to provide the optimum solution for decking over occupied
space. These Bison pedestals have a broad footprint that installs easily
on most substrates, and can be placed directly on top of roofing and
waterproofing systems. The Bison Level. It system can handle a height
range from 1/2” to 10” (with extensions).
STONE, TILE
& PEDESTAL
Bison Level.It
Adjustable Pedestal System
Adjustable Bison Level. It® deck supports create beautiful decks on rooftops,
on grade, or over cracked concrete patios. Use Level. It supports to construct
unique deck designs with a variety of materials: wood tiles, natural stone,
concrete pavers, composites or wood planking over traditional wood
stringers. Mix and match materials for a truly unique deck!
Use Level. It pedestals to elevate the deck above roof penetrations and allow
water to drain to the substrate below. The Level. It system makes routine roof
maintenance easy to perform. Level. It decks also provide ventilation and
protection from ultraviolet effects, helping to prolong roof membrane life.
Level. It deck supports have a broad footprint that installs on almost any
substrate. Without attachment to the membrane, Level. It deck supports
can be placed directly on top of roofing and waterproofing systems with
no insulation.

FINISHES
Penofin Hardwood Formula Oil
Penofin offers a complete system for coating hardwood decking starting with 1st Step Prep for
hardwoods that is used to clean and open the pores of the new wood for coatings, preparing it for
finishing. The Hardwood Finish is formulated to better penetrate dense hardwoods with sustainably
harvested Brazilian Rosewood Oil. The oil helps maintain the original color and provides UV
protection. Properly applied, Penofin allows periodic reapplication. Specific instructions can
be found at www.penofin.com
Armstrong-Clark
Armstrong-Clark is a California produced, environmentally friendly oil based wood stain with
68% of their ingredients coming from renewable and recycled items. Armstrong-Clark has nondrying conditioning oils that separate from the drying side of the formula. These oils penetrate deep
into the wood fiber where wood’s natural oils used to be. The process helps rejuvenate the wood.
The drying oils stay at the surface, lock in the conditioning oils and create a dry to the touch
barrier. It is relatively easy to both apply and reapply and leaves the wood looking beautiful.
FASTENERS
& FINISHES
Sansin
The Sansin line of finishes was developed to meet the demanding requirements of log homes.
We first became impressed with their quality based on our experience with our yard displays.
Sansin Enviro stains are unique in that they offer the benefits of oil with the ease of water clean
up. They have a number finishes that are ideally suited to a wide range of applications. SDF is a one,
or two, coat system that is great for softwood siding, decking, and fencing. DEC, a two coat system,
is the ideal choice for softwood decking or fencing and offers easy application and excellent service
life. Classic UV Topcoat is a one coat system that Sansin suggests for hardwood decking. They also
offer a Clear Wood Sealer that is a great choice when you want the deck to weather out cleanly but
still desire some protection from water penetration.
Eco Wood Treatment
ECO Wood is a unique wood treatment whose roots go back centuries to an old Scandinavian
formula. ECO Wood is a powder that is dissolved in water to create a solution that draws the tannins
out of the wood in order to give the wood a uniform “weathered” look. It uses have ranged from
Canadian National Parks and marinas to vegetable gardens and bee hives. Its effect is dramatic on
Redwood, Red Cedar and Port Orford. It is a one-time application that improves appearance with
age. It’s a great choice for Port Orford Cedar because it gives the wood a uniform appearance and
lessens the “spotting” problem that occurs as the wood goes through the aging period.
Deckmaster Brackets
When you build a deck with Deckmaster® fasteners, you will find
no unsightly nails or screws to blemish the beauty of the wood.
The result is a smooth, unmarred deck surface.
• Designed by a professional deck builder
• Every deck board is double screwed from the bottom creating a solid, stable deck
• No screws or nails to pop up as the wood shrinks
• Wood splinters resulting from surface nails or screws will be a hazard of the past
