Scouts, NCC, RSP and Cubs
Day
26 February, 2016
-Ms Ashwini Gupte
Don Bosco, Matunga’s N.C.C., R.S.P., Scout and Cub troops led the way as they
urged us to follow their example in developing team spirit and the spirit of
adventure, while selflessly serving the nation. Their annual day on February 26
exhibited what the boys in uniform are all about. The N.C.C. cadets displayed ship
and gun models, informative charts on the Indian Navy, flags indicating ship to ship
communication symbols. They also gave us valuable information on the N.C.C. as a
door opener to the armed forces. The R.S.P. boys explained the different signs and
symbols used to control road traffic and demonstrated the use of the same through
a model wherein they showcased traffic scenarios. The Scouts displayed a
makeshift watchtower and bridge, besides initiating us into the origin and
accomplishments of the scouting movement. The Scouts’ younger brothers, the
Cubs, displayed charts and demonstrated the different knots with information
about the same in all the classes of standard V, VI and VII. The fascinating array on
display was an apt testament to their respective mottoes- “Unity and Discipline”,
“We Live To Serve” and “Be Prepared”.
Class Assembly VIII A – Is it a
shame? Or are we to be
blamed?
-Ms Ashwini Gupte
26 February, 2016
The class presented a street play as part of their assembly in order to highlight the
appalling crime of child trafficking and the ill-treatment meted out to vulnerable
children. The class made it clear that that it is not only young girls, but also boys
who are lured by unscrupulous people for nefarious schemes such as child labour,
begging on the streets, organ trafficking and sexual exploitation. The students
enhanced their street play by putting up a meaningful dance highlighting the same
grave problem.

Another reward for Don
Bosco High School, Matunga
- ranked by digitalLEARNING
Magazine amidst the Top
Schools of India!
17 February, 2016
Don Bosco High School, Matunga continued to add to its collection of awards - this
time around it was for being one of the top ranking schools in India in the 3rd
digitalLEARNING School Ranking Survey 2015.
In a cut-throat competition and emerging educational market of India, performers
of various hues are differentiating themselves in a number ways, of which ranking
remains a dominant facet. Having being into the segment of India’s Education
System for quite a while, digitalLEARNING took the quest to rank the Best Schools
of the country. A set of 73 eduDESTINATIONS were identified from across the
country, segmented into 5 geographical zones. A select list of schools was
shortlisted from these eduDESTINATIONS, based on secondary editorial research
and ranking nominations.
These schools have been ranked within their very educational ecosystems so as to
provide a level playing field to all contenders. The concept of multiplicity of ranking
has been introduced with the explicit realisation that not every school can be at
the same level of excellence on every single parameter.
The ranking was based on a set of five perception-based parameters:
i. Goodwill, Legacy & Reputation (4th rank in East Mumbai)
ii. Academic Ecosystem & Outcomes; (4th rank in East Mumbai)
iii. Future Ready Academic Infrastructure;(3rd rank in East Mumbai)
iv. Enrichment of Learning Experience (3rd rank in East Mumbai)
v. Career Advancement. (2nd rank in East Mumbai)
In addition, the Online Presence (4th rank) and Social Footprints (4th rank) of these
schools are computed, which reveal a lot about the progressiveness of the brand
concerned.
We can strive to be only better!

The Christmas Panorama
2015
20 December, 2015
-Ms Ashwini Gupte
The ‘Simple joys bring laughter in big measures’ themed annual Christmas Fest was
celebrated with unbridled enthusiasm at Don Bosco High School, Matunga on Dec.
18 and 19. The school wore a festive look, appearing in fact, to be a 21st century
version of the oratory of our patron saint, Don Bosco, as the boys congregated all
over the secondary section, working tirelessly in groups, preparing for the various
activities. The spirit of Christmas brings forth the spirit of giving, of sharing with
the less fortunate, and our students also worked hard to be of service to others, by
raising proceeds in aid of a worthy cause.
The Christmas festivities included a plethora of team building exercises, as all the
events involved grouping of students house-wise, across classes V to X. Making
the stars, Christmas trees and cribs, as also the carol singing ensured a truly
Christmassy ambience. A Christmas skit giving the message of love and reaching
out to those in need sent out the real meaning of Christmas, as did the message
given by Rev. Fr. Rector. The mega entertainment involved the vibrant and lively
dance contests- a Pantomime, ‘Festive dance’, ‘All the right moves’ and
‘Dancercize’, to name a few. ‘Bosco Goes Live’ was the platform for all budding
musicians to flaunt their talent. The cherry on the cake, the highly anticipated
‘Bosco King’ competition was followed by the arrival of the most beloved of all
young children, Santa Claus himself!
The Christmas spirit being truly in the air, the school was almost magically
transformed into a place of joy, of love and bonding, of sharing and caring, a place
to forget all worries and renew our strength, everything that Christmas is all about!
Wishing you all a meaningful Christmas and a happy 2016!

Fernandes and Harsh Naik were the scorers in the final. Keith went on to be the

Don Boso High School, Matunga was offered the privilege to animate and sing at
the mass on 17th December celebrating Cardinal Oswald Gracias' birthday.
Although the birthday of the Cardinal falls on 24th December

this celebration for the Cardinal by the students a week prior to Christmas.
At the mass, the school choir was amazing, the animation of the mass meaningful,
and the address read by the AHM, Ms. Beatrice was a fitting tribute to His
Eminence for his contribution to the Church and society. The entire contingent of
Don Bosco Matunga came in for high praise from the Cardinal himself, Fr. George
Athaide (ABE secretary) and the participants at the liturgy.
We wish His Eminence long life, good health and happiness.
SAY IT WITH CARDS, CRIBS,
STARS AND CHRISTMAS
TREES!
16 December, 2015
What is Christmas without a Christmas tree, a crib, a star or a card? Simple
reminders that Christmas joy and cheer are incomplete without them. The
secondary section of our school was agog with card, crib, star and Christmas tree
competitions on 16th Dec afternoon. The students were at their creative best
decorating the stars, lending a deft touch to a crib, preparing Christmas cards for
their parents, or giving a festive look to the Christmas tree. The merry atmosphere
irrespective of the competition filled the campus, and the sight was indeed a joy to
behold for the judges, parents and well-wishers alike.

students in the sale which was very encouraging. The students asked the parents
and visitors to give a feedback by writing in a book that they maintained.
The Red House celebrates
‘Incredible North East India'
- Mrs. Elizabeth Soares
7 November, 2015
A week-long journey through the north eastern seven ‘sister states’ of India
brought a wealth of knowledge about the remote frontiers and rugged regions that
comprise the farthest reaches of India, courtesy the Red House students of Don
Bosco High School, Matunga.
The lilting melody ‘Mist and Magic’ became the theme song which carried us over
the far expanses of this least known and sadly, oft misunderstood part of our own
country. Video presentations transported us to ageless forests, formidable
mountain ranges, chilling glacial rivers and swampy grasslands as we witnessed the
vast ethnic diversity and alluring culture of the peoples. From the challenging
Himalayas to the serene Tawang monastery, from the enchanting tea gardens of
Assam to the drenched towns of Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, from the mighty
one-horned rhinos of Kaziranga to the endangered Sangai deer in Manipur; for
being home to boxing legend Mary Kom and the musical genius that was the late
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika; we saw that the north east offers something to enthrall
everyone.
The sprightly Naga and Bihu dances performed by students of the Red House
added ebullience to the informative talk shop conducted over the intercom. A quiz
and extempore speeches gave students of the other houses the opportunity to
flaunt their newly acquired knowledge and also to win prizes for their respective
houses.
A video presentation captured the entire celebration, beginning with the festive
decorations to the colourful displays, from the teachers and students felicitating
the management to the participation of the boys in the revelry, adding an element
of togetherness and charm.

entire class. On the scheduled day, all the boys came along with their fruits or
vegetable and said boldly what they had learnt. This helped the children listen to
the others while learning something new at the same time. It was indeed a learning
experience for the children as they saw and touched different fruits and
vegetables. The teachers also stressed on the importance of eating fruits and

Man Making Mission
-Ms Ashwini Gupte
Sept 23: Swami Vivekananda was upheld as an icon on a 'man' making mission, as
was Don Bosco. The class gave us an example of this mission, through an incident
involving current-day youngsters who go back in time and learn invaluable lessons
from Swami Vivekananda.
A name is a gift from God, he explained. Parents give positive names to their
offspring, a self-fulfilling prophecy to live up to, and so teasing someone by his
name is wrong. The message went out loud and clear to all.

Rev. Fr. Provincial gives his
message at the Class
Assembly IX C
16th September 2015
– Who will you make peace with?
-Ashwini Gupte
A red-letter day at Don Bosco
High School saw the Provincial, Rev. Fr. Godfrey D’Souza, with his cheerful smile at
the class assembly, on his annual visitation to the school. The Principal, Rev. Fr.
Bernard Fernandes conveyed the day’s outstanding news, that of the Hindustan
Times having ranked Don Bosco, Matunga among the top 10 schools in the
Mumbai East Zone.
Rev. Fr. Bernard introduced the Provincial as a kind-hearted yet firm erudite
gentleman, tech-savvy yet one who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life such as
music and song.
The International Day of peace being around the corner, on Sept. 21, the class
depicted the real-life story of Sadako Sasaki and the thousand paper cranes, that of
a young Japanese girl who survived the bombing of Hiroshima and though cancerafflicted as a result, became a symbol of peace and forgiveness. The backdrop
displayed the image of the imposing statue in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park,
with the plaque that reads:"This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world."
Rev. Fr. Godfrey addressed the students with the message that peace begins with
each of us. Through the story of Abraham Lincoln, Fr. Godfrey illustrated how we
can ‘destroy’ our enemy by winning him over with love.
Immediately after the assembly, Fr. Godfrey proceeded to the Primary section to
witness an outstanding cultural day program by the students of Std. III C with the
help of their class teachers and music master. Fr. Provincial concluded the
visitation of the school, meeting the non-clerical school staff, and then the entire
staff later in the afternoon.
Hindustan Times survey: DB
Matunga features in the Top
ten schools of Mumbai East
16 Sep, 2015
Parents give a lot of thought and time to selecting a school for their child.
Curriculum, teaching standards, school infrastructure, fees, location, safety — all
are crucial while making that choice.
Earlier, there were few options in curriculum and a small list of old and established
institutions to choose from. Now, new-age campuses and legislation, such as the
Right to Education Act, are revolutionising school education. With an explosion in
the number of schools and a wider choice of Indian and international curricula, the
task of finding the best school is tougher than ever.
In a wide and elaborate survey (2015-16) conducted by Hindustan Times, Don
Bosco Matunga featured fifth among the top best schools of Mumbai East. A proud
achievement indeed!
Exploring western India - The
Blue House Week
Mumbai, Sept. 12:
A memorable week with its insights on the western states of India, with their
distinct charm.
The students gave us a number of insights into unique facets that contribute
towards the grandeur of the states of Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Goa;
their culture, cuisine, attire and recent achievements. The teachers of the blue
house also engaged themselves in bringing out the beauty of the state by dressing
up in the traditional attire of each state.
‘Manache Shlok’ along with the English meaning and a lively conversation between
two students captured the different hues of the state of Maharashtra, followed by
a video presentation in each class showing its historical monuments. Boys dressed
in traditional costumes of Gujarat and Rajasthan transported us to the fascinating
desert landscape through their greetings and the display. Rev. Fr. Principal was
invited to light the diyas, and decorated with the traditional Rajasthani turban.
Enchanting beaches of Goa, along with its historical sites were viewed through
video presentations. Mrs.Elizabeth engaged the listeners with some traditional
Konkani songs known as ‘mandwa’. This presentation was wrapped up with a Goan
poem expressing the beauty of Goa.
The boys, through creative chart displays and wearing the state costumes,
contributed to the House Week, along with the parents, whose support is very
much appreciated.
Class Assembly VI C
– Save the girl child
Sept. 15: The girl child of today will be the mother of a child tomorrow, and no
more need be said about the invaluable role a mother plays in her child’s life. The
students enacted the story of a poor young girl who wishes to be educated in order
to stand on her own feet.
The boys gave us examples of intrepid women achievers such as Indira Gandhi,
Kiran Bedi, Mary Kom, Kalpana Chawla and Mother Teresa, as symbolic of what
the girl child could accomplish, given an opportunity.

Hindi One Act Play
14 Sep, 2015
Paying homage to our Rashtrabhasha - The Hindi One Act Plays
Mumbai, Sept. 14: The ‘Hindi Divas’ was celebrated at Don Bosco High School,
Matunga with great reverence towards the one tongue that gives us our national
identity, and in a country which counts a plurality of languages among its riches,
binds us together as Indians. The Hindi Department of the school staged the One
Act Plays on this memorable occasion.
The Yellow House transported us to the aftermath of the war at Kalinga, an
epochal event not for being one of the bloodiest battles in world history, but for
being the cause of the mighty Emperor Ashoka converting to pacifism and
spreading the message of love and peace throughout the country and beyond.
‘Main bhi maanav hoon’ by Shri Vishnu Prabhakar, depicted the inner battle waged
within Ashoka’s heart, as to whether he had really achieved a victory after
decimating the enemy. In a world rife with selfishness and cut throat competition,
the play also intended to make each of us reflect on whether the race is really
worth it.
The Green House gave us a historical retelling of principal events in the life of
Emperor Harsha, scion of the Vardhan dynasty. ‘Sthaneshwar ka Rajpurush’
depicted Harsha avenging the death of his brother, Rajya Vardhan and saving his
sister Rajyasri’s life after she was devastated as a result of both, her brother's and
her father, Prabhakar Vardhan’s deaths.
The Blue House with ‘Mere sapno ki Rani kab ayegi tu’ portrayed women’s
empowerment and the great strides women have made in emancipating
themselves through the powerful weapon of education. The play depicted a
bachelor who is rejected by prospective alliances because they are better
educated.
The Red House presented their play 'Jeevan ke rang' scripted by their teacher, Ms.
Hemangi. The play tried to place a mirror in front of the audience, of life on earth
as it really is. We watched Narad Muni having returned to heaven from a visit to
the earth, explaining his observations to a goddess. Through scenes that reflected
human life on earth, the audience was made aware that we live in a world full of
sorrow, mirth, greed and blind faith, but paradoxically, manage to stay happy.
We congratulate all the participants for their noteworthy performances and
especially the Yellow House for winning the competition!

2015-2016
The Value Education Seminar for Value Education coordinators, ‘Involving Parents
in the Educative Process’ focused on the crucial role families play in shaping
children, and the need therefore to maintain healthy home environments.
A number of stalwarts animated the gathering, beginning with Rev. Bishop
Dominic Savio Fernandes who briefly introduced the topic, followed by the
keynote speaker, Dr. Mrs. Yolande Pereira, who discussed ways to involve parents
in the educative process- through P.T.A. meetings, seminars and volunteer work in
school, to list a few. Dr. Pereira concluded that parents and teachers contribute to
the child’s academic success when they forge a meaningful partnership.
A panel presentation comprised Ms. Rohini D’Souza sharing her views on ‘Enabling
youngsters to build healthy family relationships, Dr Yolande Pereira spoke about
‘Tackling the menace of pornography’, Fr. Jude Fernandes with ‘Enabling
youngsters to understand discipline and responsibility’, Fr. Ajoy Fernandes on
‘Teaching youngsters to deal with stress’ and Fr. Magi Murzello guiding the group
on ‘Keeping youngsters safe from addiction.’
In keeping with the theme, ‘Like Don Bosco, with the young, for the young’, the
seminar would be another step towards being there for our children, as best we
can.

Nature Club
Going on a nature trail
Mumbai, September 10: A group of Nature Club enthusiasts of our school visited
the Sion Fort Garden along with their teacher, Mrs. Barkha Shah, as part of a Green
line activity, under the guidance of Ms. Gauri Gurad, a plant expert.
The Nature trail was organized to watch birds, insects and trees. The students
observed and learnt about the following plants and insects.
1) Dragon fly ( Ditch jewel):
There were many dragon flies hovering over the fort. Dragon flies are indicators of
nearby water bodies because they lay eggs in water. There was only one species
ditch jewel in huge numbers showing a bad sign of polluted water bodies.
2) Lantana camera:
It’s a common invasive weed that attracts lots of butterflies.
3) Rui fruits:
Rui fruits look like moustache. The leaves and flowers are offered to lord Hanuman
on Saturdays. It gives out poisonous latex which tiger butterflies feed on.
4) Pongal oil tree or karanj:
The seeds of this tree are used to extract biofuel. The leaves in the photo are
infected by gall insects that live and lay eggs inside the leaves.

Teachers Day
To Our Teachers, With Love – Teachers’ Day celebrations
Mumbai, September 5: The special occasion on which to show gratitude towards
teachers, the Teachers’ Day, was a grand affair at Don Bosco’s with students
felicitating their teachers in their respective classes, followed by a special
entertainment programme organized by parents and the Student
Council. Preparations for the day saw the P.T.A. representatives and parents of the
Primary students helping the boys to prepare the class programmes. In the
Secondary section, the Student Council ably guided the boys with the same. The
classrooms, the staff rooms and the corridors were also colourfully decorated.
The day began by invoking God's blessings on the teachers at a special Mass in the
shrine, followed by the class celebrations where students did their best to bring a
smile to their teachers’ faces through speeches, poems, songs, skits, power point
presentations and dance. An entertaining programme was put up in the gym by the
Student Council and parents of the Primary Section. The day came to an end with a
fellowship meal shared by the management, the retired and present staff and the
non-teaching staff.
A big 'Thank You' to everyone involved, for making the day very special!

The Design For Change
(D.F.C.)
The Design For Change (D.F.C.) programme is a global movement that cultivates
the ‘I Can’ mindset in every child; empowering children by giving them the
opportunity to express their own ideas for a better world and putting the same
into action. Don Bosco High School, Matunga has taken on the same in the current
academic year.
The Soc
ial Service students of Std. VIII, under the
guidance of their teachers, Mrs. Bindu Keny, Mrs. Gracy Gonsalves, Mrs. Selma
Gonsalves and Mrs. Karuna Dadipogu have identified key areas they wish to bring
about the change in, as per the D.F.C. directives.
The students would accordingly be looking intoSpreading awareness about electricity as a precious resource and judicious use
thereof.
Reduction of honking outside the school premises.
Reduction of litter within the school premises.
Bringing about an awareness of the negative effects of abusive language.
Implementation of the same has been initiated through talks soliciting student and
staff cooperation and informative placards.

Numbers are Important
29 August 2015.
The students of Std III
observed Numbers are Important
Day on the 26th of August. The classrooms were decorated in keeping with the
theme. A discussion was held where the children were made to understand how
and why numbers play an important role in our everyday life. Before numbers were
invented people used pebbles and stones for counting. Later on people counted on
their fingers .Even today the system of counting from one to ten using fingers is
popular in most countries. In fact the decimal system was inspired by our ten digits
(fingers). Individual numbers are therefore called digits. The invention of zero by
Aryabhatt made the difficult calculations easy. Indians used the concept of zero for
the first time and in turn the Arabs who learnt it from India introduced the concept
to the western world.
The students were made familiar with numbers in a few oth
er languages. During the course of the day the work
done was all co-related to numbers. The students solved interesting worksheets
and viewed a power point presentation. Through the various activities conducted
the students learnt numbers are unavoidable in one’s life. Without numbers there
would be no science, no music and no art. The children really enjoyed the various
activities conducted and learning outcomes were achieved.

Assembly –IX E 26th August
The IX E class presented a meaningful and well executed assembly highlighting
children's ability to act as agents of change. The assembly focussed on the life of
Craig Kielburger, a child rights activist who was just in the Seventh grade when he
was inspired to become an advocate to fight for the rights of children. Craig in turn
was inspired by Iqbal Masih a Pakistani child who was a child rights activist at the
age of twelve. He was shot dead because of his influence over the 3000
Pakistani children who escaped from their torturers with Iqbal’s help. This
assembly strongly brought out a thought that even as children, they can bring
about a positive change by doing ordinary things extraordinarily.
Field trip to the Taraporewala
Aquarium
-Mrs Vailena D' Souza
The students of std III went on
a field trip to the
Taraporewala Aquarium today, ie 27th August, 2015. This field trip was organised
for the children to supplement their lesson in EVS on living and non living things.
Along with their cap, water bottle, snacks, etc, they were also informed to carry a
note book and pencil, to jot down whatever they observed. Each class was
accompanied by their respective class teacher and two parents.
The students were fascinated to see the different kinds of colourful fresh water
and tropical fish of different shapes and sizes on display there, and very eagerly
began writing down the names and information provided on each fish.
All in all, it was a very exciting day for our students.

Bosco’s Talent Fest, the ‘Kala
Utsav’ a grand success
Don Bosco High School, Matunga’s annual festival, spelt
two days, August 21 and 22, of fun, creativity and learning. We witnessed a slew of
events, both group and individual, that brought talent to the fore and fetched the children
House Points. We also focused on events intended to help the students improve in their
academic performance. The uniqueness of this year’s Bosco Kala Utsav was the Student
Council, along with the working committee, who took charge of the entire programme,
right from the planning stage to the implementation, with minimal intervention on the part
of the teachers. To provide a bird’s eye view, the Utsav included the English Elocution, the
Debates, the Choral Recitation, the Mental Floss Essay Writing event, Mono Acting, the
Unique Talent event, a quiz, a handwriting event, word search and Sudoku puzzles, an art
event and the much-loved Vocals event. As part of sustained efforts to inculcate the
reading habit in our students, a ‘Readathon’ event was organized, wherein each student
was encouraged to read a book of his choice in class. A spelling bee aimed not only at
improving spelling, but also at building vocabulary. Studen
ts made colourful and creative displays for their classrooms.
A feedback was given on the days’ events, on what went
well and how to better the programme in the forthcoming year. Finally, the boys viewed
two short films on Don Bosco.
Kudos to the Student Council and the members of the working committee for a job well
done and congratulations to the winners of the various competitions!

A special celebration on the
occasion of a milestone
reached, at Don Bosco
Matunga
Mumbai, AUGUST 20- The much-awaited day dawned, the fiftieth birthday of our
Principal, Rev. Fr. Bernard Fernandes, an occasion not only to pray, but also to sing,
dance and make merry. The day began with the Eucharistic Mass thanking God for
the gift of life. A surprise lay in store for Fr. Bernard as he had no inkling of his
family’s presence at the festivities! Flanked by his confreres and family, Fr. Bernard
made his way to the gym where the party began. ‘Showers of blessings’ rained on
Fr. Bernard as he entered the gym, courtesy our school band.
A taditional ‘arti’ was performed and a shawl presented to
Fr. Bernard by Sir C. Rai, Coordinator of the Secondary Section. Ms. Lakshmi
prayed to God for the person of Fr. Bernard, as one of few ‘who live for others
without expecting anything in return.’ Ms. Beatrice Pinto, A.H.M., gave thanks to
the Almighty for the gift of Fr. Bernard. Then came the traditional lighting of the
lamp by Fr. Bernard with his dear mother, followed by family and members of his
community, along with special friends Rev. Fr. Crispino D’Souza, ex-Principal, Don
Bosco High School and Ms. Nicole Britto, ex-A.H.M. St. Joseph’s, Wadala and
senior teachers of our school.
Carlin Pereira read out the
birthday address to Fr. Bernard, followed by the cutting of the cake by the birthday
boy, after which we enjoyed a fun-filled variety entertainment programme.
A visibly-touched Fr. Bernard thanked everyone for making his day special and
confessed his initial inhibitions at being asked to head the institution, on account of
his ill health. Fr. Bernard gave the students the message that each of us is
answerable to God and that it is a responsibility to go out of Don Bosco, Matunga
and be the change that society needs.
We pray that God Almighty keep you in good health and that you enjoy many more
memorable birthdays, Fr. Bernard!

Education to Love
Prasd Chalkar XF and Aaron Pereira XF
Education to Love was not a new subject
for the students of Std X., though more popularly known as Sex Education. They
had heard about it from friends. They made their way to the conference hall and
met Fr.Edison who would be their educator and facilitator. . Many thought, this
was going to be just another candid question-answer session. Some students
even joked that they knew more than Fr. Edison himself. However, the session
didn’t turn out as many had imagined. As the session progressed, students saw
themselves getting more engaged with Fr. He started with a humorous video
that depicted sex education to teens in India and how it conflicted with Indian
values and how teachers were embarrassed discussing it. What followed after was
an hour of amazing and purpose filled interaction between students and Fr.
Edison. He explained about the human anatomy using pictures and videos.
Besides that, father told how watching pornography can affect one’s married life.
Fr. Edison was the Man of the Moment. His witty
and rib-tickling statements enabled him to strike a rapport with the students and
the young teens opened up without any inhibitions. . He made sure that each query
was answered, and each doubt cleared. By cracking a few jokes in between, he
made sure that the students were comfortable and did not feel awkward. Many
misconceptions of the life process were shattered. One of his many zingers was,”
This is one class where I won’t give you any homework.” From pornography to
sexual intimacy, he covered every topic, and at the same time, he made it a joyous
and fun filled experience. Students left the Conference Hall with a mature and
transformed outlook towards one of
God ‘s greatest gifts to man. They were not
giggling and laughing like gauche school boys i.e. not the way they entered the
Conference Hall.
It is common many children refuse to talk with their parents about sex because
they are shy and feel uncomfortable. Parents themselves don’t broach the subject .
Sessions like these help students understand themselves better and satisfy their
curiosity.
Viewing ‘Daughters of
Mother India’ - Gender
sensitizing our boys
Mumbai, AUGUST 12 The feature length
documentary by Vibha Bakshi, the winner of the National Film Award for Best Film
on Social Issues, 2015, was screened for the 850 students of classes VIII, IX and X
of Don Bosco High School, Matunga in their classrooms, followed by a discussion
intended to sensitize the boys towards the opposite gender.
'Daughters of Mother India,’ was a graphic journey through the aftermath of the
horrific rape and murder of a 23 year old medical intern, ‘Nirbhaya’ and the mass
protests that followed, bringing to light 'gender consciousness' and extraordinary
solidarity by ordinary citizens.
Yet another appalling incident followed up in the documentary was the rape of a 5
year old child, ‘Guddi,’ gang-raped by porn addicts, whose father can only pray for
his child to leave the horrendous incident behind as she grows up.
The film helped explore the swift and radical changes being made in the Police, the
Judiciary and community groups, who are promoting for the first time, a national
dialogue on the current sexist attitudes of Indian society such as ‘a woman’s place
is at home’ and ‘she asked for it by the way she dressed,’ and how to change them.
After viewing the film, a discussion aimed at gender sensitization was initiated by
each teacher, in order to raise awareness of gender equality concerns. Through the
group discussion, the teacher brought out the need for girls and women to be
brave and to fight against societal ills, while our boys were made aware of the
importance of empathizing with and respecting girls and women, bearing in mind
the ultimate goal of gender equality in Indian society.

'Saint John Bosco - Mission
to Love'.
On 11th Aug 2015, over 1600 students from Stds. V to X saw
the engrossing movie 'Saint John Bosco - Mission to Love'. As part of the
bicentenary celebration of the birth of Don Bosco, the epic movie was screened for
the students and staff of DB Matunga which dramatizes the many challenges that
Don Bosco had to overcome from his childhood through founding his religious
order, the Salesians, for helping educate boys. Flavio Insinna gives a winning
performance as John (Don) Bosco, the great priest and educator of youth from the
tough streets of Turin, Italy. Beautifully filmed in Italy, the movie sketches the life
of Don Bosco who, growing up without a father, developed compassion for the
many orphans that he cared for. He faced persecution from both secular society
and the Church as he fought to build a place to house and educate the homeless,
outcast youth of Turin. His deep faith, creative imagination and profound charity
shine through in this wonderful film.
Independence Day
‘One small step makes a big difference’ – We acknowledge achievers on the
memorable occasion of India’s 69th Independence Day
A red letter day, when we at Don Bosco High School, Matunga hoisted the
tricolour with pride and saluted all the ‘true patriots’ who contribute their mite
towards leading free India on the path of progress. Class X A put up their assembly
juxtaposing freedom from British rule on the one hand, and a Mother India still in
chains on the other; shackled as she is by poverty, communalism, gender injustice,
corruption, illiteracy and other evils.
The skit brought out the strides that India has made as she forges ahead in her
quest for development. We witnessed a group of youngsters enthused by the idea
of being the change they wish for, pledging to stop placing the blame elsewhere
and to fight against discrimination and dishonesty.
Nikhilesh Singh rendered a powerful speech made by the
Late Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam on his vision for India in the year 2020.
Rev. Fr. Wilfred D’Souza, the Rector, reminded us of two key words- ‘Change’ that
we all look for, but which should come from within, and true ‘Freedom’ which lies
in knowing what we ought to do, and doing it well.
As is tradition at Bosco’s, we took the opportunity to felicitate our S.S.C. toppers of
the batch 2014-2015 for their hard work and the glory they bring to their alma
mater. Our Chief guests for the day being the parents of Safal Dawankar, the
school topper, Mrs. Dawankar had the privilege of giving away the award
certificates and scholarships. Mr.
Dawankar made a heartfelt speech intended to inspire the
current students to “Be focused and give a hundred per cent.”
Rev. Fr. Bernard Fernandes brought the ceremony to a close by thanking all those
responsible for the solemn and dignified proceedings.

Don Bosco Evening Study
Class
Don Bosco Evening Study Class
The Don Bosco Evening Study Class caters to the needs of the underprivileged
youth of the neighbourhood by means of the various facilities it provides. The boys
belong to the
socioeconomic backward class and many of
them live in the slums of Dharavi, Wadala, Sundernagar and Four Roads. The
parents of most of the boys work as domestics, coolies, construction workers,
etc... A large number of the slum youth, attending the neighbourhood municipal
schools, lack facilities for regular studies at home.
Realizing their acute need, the Management of Don Bosco Matunga High School
has set apart a few classrooms where two hundred boys from Stds. 7th to 10 th are
able to have
two hours of supervised study. The night class is operated under the direct
supervision of the Principal. The ex-
students collaborate
in assisting and guiding the boys. The boys are provided with a proper study
atmosphere, are assisted with their homework and coached in English and
Mathematics.
The boys lack wholesome recreation, and hence we provide them with these
facilities and other extra-curricular activities. Six days a week, these boys play for
an hour and are provided with a nourishing and appetizing evening meal.
While our aim is assistance in studies of these boys and their overall development,
our objectives can be spelt out as under:
To provide assistance to the boys to complete their SSC.
To improve their self image, develop talents and impart training towards
leadership.
To create an integrated method or working with the school, family and other
night study class students.
To help them build their own future, by providing them a sense of direction in
choosing a proper vocation.

Salesians of Don Bosco
The Founder – Don Bosco – A man with a vision and
a mission.
St. John Bosco was born in Turin, Italy in 1815. When he was two years old, his
father died. This future saint, raised by his mother, experienced the pains of
poverty at a very tender age. John’s future work was inspired by a dream he had at
the age of nine. He wanted to become a priest, especially to assist youth. In order
to pursue his dream John had to leave home at a young age to join the city school.
Being bigger than his classmates, he was often the object of much ridicule. Little
did they know at what cost John finished his schooling. After school he worked as
a tailor, a cobbler or a waiter, often studying by candle light late into the night. On
completing his education he began his studies to be a priest.
John Bosco was ordained a priest at the age of twenty-six. He was now called Don
Bosco. He immediately began his work with orphans. He opened a hospice for
boys where his mother served as the housekeeper. He not only fed the homeless
boys whom he took in but also provided them with opportunities for livelihood
skills. He spent long hours teaching them to read and write; he also taught them
tailoring and shoemaking and quickly set up a printing press. Above all, he created
a family atmosphere of trust and caring. Those who helped him were amazed at the
transformation in several youngsters.
Soon those associated with Don Bosco and his work began to accept him as their
father and guide. Some expressed their desire to become like him. And so, the
Salesian Society consisting of priests and lay brothers was born. (The word
‘Salesian’ was derived from St Francis de Sales, a saintly bishop noted for his gentle
kindness and holiness. Don Bosco chose him as his personal model and later as the
patron of his society.)
The greatest gift that Don Bosco has left posterity is his unique way of educating, a
method that was inspired by his one magnificent obsession: “It is enough to know
that you are young and abandoned for me to love you very much.”
More than a century after the death of Don Bosco, thousands of people have
dedicated themselves to the continuation if his apostolic love for young people all
over the world. Their mission is to be “signs and bearers of God’s love to the
young.”
The “Salesians of Don Bosco” is an international society founded by Don Bosco.
Catholic priests and Brothers who are members of the Society work for the
development and education of the young especially those most at risk. Through its
3000 Schools, Colleges, Technical schools and youth centers in 125 countries, the
Salesians of Don Bosco serve all young people irrespective of religious differences
or social inequalities.
In India, Don Bosco Educational institutions are spread all over the country and are
in great demand. The style of education consists in involving young people, their
parents or guardians and the educators in a family atmosphere. The method
adopted is one that was lived and handed down by Don Bosco himself -“The
Preventive System” based on Reason, Faith in God and Loving Kindness. The goal is
Integral Education. This embraces developing physical and aesthetic talents,
training in occupational skills, fostering intellectual skills and competence,
furthering cultural development and integration with others, including moral
uprightness.

Yellow House
The Yellow House continued their journey
-Ms. Susan Philip
The Yellow House continued
their journey and followed their Star: North India. The school experienced a
kaleidoscopic tourist experience of History, Mythology, literature and the Fine
Arts. Adorned with pristine natural beauty and home to the majestic Himalayan
ranges, North India flaunts the most awe-inspiring vistas. Through a PPT the
students feasted their eyes on picturesque scenes of the Himalayas, Kashmir,
Himachal Pradesh and Utarkhand. They also got nuggets of information on historic
monuments of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. One is tempted to quote Amir
Khusrao, the Sufi musician and poet as he eulogised Kashmir: Agar is duniya mein
jannat hai, toh bas, yahi hai, yahin hai, yahin hai...
The house also captured the riveting and
distinct sights and sounds of Northern India, the abode of literary giants,
musicians, architects , poets and the river Ganges. They gave a short presentation
of this over the intercom: The sound of the conch, the vedic chants, a recital of
Kalidas’s Poetic compostion in praise of the Himalayas, the predominant sound of
the tabla and the thal when kathak is performed, the soft notes of the flute as they
guided the audience through Vrindhavan and Mathura and the land of the
Mahabharat. They also charted the course of the majestic and mystic River Ganga,
originating from Devprayag. The simple and short presentation reached a
crescendo as they introduced Harivansh Rai Bachchan the celebrated Hindi poet.
They highlighted some of his renowned works from his repertoire, with special
reference to his Magnum Opus, Madhushala. The journey drew to a close with his
megastar son Amitabh Bachchan rendering a tribute to his father in his inimitable
voice.
Come travel through the North of India and savour the Melting Pot.

Dear friends,
Here's a story narrated by the wise and popular author Paulo Coelho.
A Siberian shaman asked God to show him a man that He loved. The Lord advised
him to look for a certain farmer “What do you do to make the Lord love you so
much?” the shaman asked the farmer when he found him. “I say His name in the
morning. I work all day and say His name before going to sleep. That’s all,” the
farmer replied.I think I found the wrong man, thought the shaman. Just then the
Lord appeared and said, “Fill a bowl with milk, go to town and then return. Without
spilling a single drop.” The shaman did so. On his return, the Lord wanted to know
how many times he had thought of Him. “How could I? I was worried not to spill
the milk!” “A simple bowl made you forget Me,” said the Lord, “and the farmer,
with all his tasks, thinks of me twice a day.”
This is not a Christmas story as the Christmas season would have had it. However,
it reminds us what we need to do this Christmas. Push the celebrations and
festivities in the background and remember Christ, the centre of the feast of
Christmas. There's another reason why I wish to have this story here. To
remember, and not take for granted, the daily blessings we receive. Christmas is a
beautiful story of salvation for Christians. It is the story of God becoming human to
be like us in all things except sin. It is a special moment in history when God
chooses to accept the sufferings of the world to liberate humanity. It is a love and
gesture of God difficult for us to comprehend, but we express our thanks in our
own little way. For Christians, the celebration of Christmas is a feast of gratitude. It
is said that Gratitude happens when some kindness exceeds expectations, when it
is undeserved. Gratitude is a sort of laughter of the heart that comes about after
some surprising kindness. Most people feel grateful some of the time — after
someone offers you a lift on the road or visits you during an illness. But as author
and columnist David Brooks puts it, some people seem grateful dispositionally.
They seem thankful practically all of the time. They take nothing for granted. They
take a beginner’s thrill at a word of praise, at another’s good performance or at
each sunny day. These people are present-minded and hyper-responsive.
People with dispositional gratitude are unlike people who claim to be selfsufficient, independent, who rely too much on themselves. Rather they are
hyperaware of their continual dependence on others. They treasure the way they
have been fashioned by parents, friends and ancestors who were in some ways
their superiors. They are continually struck by the fact that they are given far more
than they pay for — and are much richer than they deserve. Their families, schools,
training grounds and summer camps put far more into them than they give back.
There’s a lot of surplus goodness in daily life that can’t be explained by the logic of
equal exchange. At Christmas - and otherwise - is this not an attitude worth
cultivating than being solely grateful to people who do us favours or will care for us
in return? This will help us look beyond ourselves and appreciate life, people and
the world around us for what they are, and not how they will be of benefit to us.
Let's give it a try and Christmas joy, peace and happiness will be ours for the
asking!
Merry Christmas and a happy new year 2016!
Gratefully yours,
Fr. Bernard Fernandes

Dear friends,
The Diwali season is on our doorstep and it is time we step out in the open,
reinvigorate ourselves with the the boundless spirit and festive fervor all around us
- among our families, friends and neigbours. In the school, we have just ended our
first term replete with activities, study, games and competitions. On the campus
there was no dearth of calendar events, celebrations and assemblies beside
learning and exams. There was never a dull moment as they say at Don Bosco
Matunga. And that's what precisely keeps the clock ticking fast! We have achieved
much during this short period - a handful of awards of recognition for the school at
the city, state and national level, a bagful of trophies (as is our wont!) in sports, and
have made inroads into the field of research. All this makes us happy, proud and
contented because this is what we set out to achieve. However, we need to be
cautious since our growth and formation doesn't stop there. It is a constantly
evolving process, and we need to be ever vigilant to opportunities for excellence
and increasingly watchful for all that harm and stunt our growth.
Vacation is a time to unwind and relax in the company of friends, family and
neighbours, and yet be of service to our fellow human beings. This mid-scholatic
year break is combined with the Diwali festive season. Diwali is a festival of lights,
and light is something that exudes warmth, vibrancy, and security. Light is also a
reminder to us to expend ourselves. Though the modern battery-run diyas, lamps
and candles fascinate and makes things lighter for us, it is the old traditional diyas
and candles that capture our imagination. They remind us that life consists not in
standing still, but in expending. When we don't move, don't sacrifice, we become
useless, we accomplish nothing. One of our spiritual leaders spoke wisely when he
said 'A soul that does not walk in life doing good, doing many things that one must
do for society, to assist others, or who does not walk through life seeking God and
His inspiration, is a soul that finishes in mediocrity and in spiritual poverty. Please:
do not stand still in life!"
Make this Diwali special by spreading the glow of your light within - share your
Diwali joy and gifts with your family and friends, and also the needy. Seek God,
seek His inspiration this Diwali season!
Happy and joyous Diwali!
Sincerely,
Fr. Bernard Fernandes

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Well wishers,
I’ve had just over three months in office and
it’s been a satisfying and engaging period. There have been challenges and
blessings, and the blessings far outnumber the setbacks and difficulties. This may
not be the opportune moment to delve more on ongoing stint at DB Matunga,
however it does colour my message on the occasion of Teacher’s Day.
I begin with my story as a 10 year old student. It was my first year at Don Bosco
High School, Panjim, Goa, after having completed Std. IV at Our Lady of Rosary
High School, Doña Paula which was a co-ed school up to Std IV. I lost my father
when I was in Std V and on that day I had my class teacher, Mrs. Rebello, visiting
my house and offering some words and moments of consolation and support to my
grief-stricken mother and family. Forty years have passed, and this memory is
etched in my mind. And I wonder why. For my class teacher, it may have been a
routine visit or a customary condolence call. However, for me and my family it was
special. It showed her concern beyond studies and lessons, above homework and
assignments. This ability to transform the teaching profession into a ‘human’
enterprise is what makes the teaching vocation a noble one. And happily for me I
have encountered many teachers who have risen above syllabus delivery and
mediocrity to touch the sensitive, most delicate and personal aspects of young
people and help them grow.
Teaching profession (and vocation) is on the wane now; it’s because there are
better and challenging careers and jobs with handsome pay cheques. Or it may be
that the demands of a teaching job – unmanageable number of students,
demanding parents and a punishing schedule of teaching and evaluation – are just
too much to handle. Some others may not be just up to it. However for those of us
who pursue and value teaching, teacher’s Day, though a moment to bask in all the
accolades and attention we richly deserve, is also a time to introspect and regroup
our energies.
In Japan, sport is often seen as a way towards self-fulfilment, and the names of
many of Japan’s most traditional sports, such as judo and kendo, end with the
suffix -do, which actually means “the path” or “the way”. A marathon runner in
Japan, having completed 1000 marathons in 1000 days in search of enlightenment
had this reply to an interviewer: “Everyone needs to find something that suits them;
that works with their body, with what they are doing in this life. I chose to
undertake this challenge. But it is just one of many different paths to the same
place.” Running, too, according to the marathon runner can be a way to selffulfilment. It has a purity, a power, a way of clearing the mind that few other
activities possess. Sometimes it may seem unlikely, as we creak and struggle along,
our legs heavy and tired, but then come those moments when we break through
and our bodies begin to feel light, strong, at one with the earth.
Teaching is something similar, even nobler since it affects and moulds young minds.
It is a way of self-fulfilment for us teachers with struggles and creaks, yet it means
lacing up our shoes and heading out for another run, with commitment and
passion.
HAPPY TEACHER’S DAY !

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear staff and students,
We have begun a new scholastic year
2015-16. It’s that time of the year we all feel excited to make a fresh start, scale
pinnacles and dream big to reach the stars. The summer vacation has given us the
energy and vitality that is necessary to kick start the new year. It’s important that
we retain this vigour and renew our focus every now and then for there will be
moments when we get tired of routine, bored of class work and home assignments,
take everything and everyone around us for granted, or even
