higher level in recent years with the opening of
new championship layouts and the enhancement of several of the more classic designs.
Nova Scotia golf is powerful - with challenging

Golf in this vibrant seaside province is inspiring. Courses are designed along shorelines
cooled by summer breezes and framed by
rolling pastoral land, highlands and islands,
rugged coastlines and splendid white sand

Whether it is the course design or spectacular

North America's golf experts as a "must play"

he Pines course is a Stanley
Thompson masterpiece that was
modernized in 1999 with a completely new irrigation system. The Pines is
carved out of a superb setting through an
evergreen forest. Many professional
golfers consider this to be one of the
most challenging and picturesque courses
in the country and it has hosted numerous
prestigious tournaments.
T
The course is characterized by a winding
brook that has been dammed to create
two outstanding par three holes - one of
which is the signature second hole. The
par 5 number seven hole is a winding,
dipping adventure, rated one of the most
difficult holes in Canada.
The course is a thoroughly enjoyable and
unforgettable golfing layout, immaculately
maintained and reputed to be one of the
best golf values in the Maritimes. With
the recent improvements, 2002 will prove
to be a banner year for this wonderful
course.
The resort itself is an elegant and classic
property that has hosted many sports
celebrities over the years and has been
rated by Golf Ranking magazine as a
"Gold Medal" golf resort.

nearth the ancient secrets of the Glooscap Trail. Bask on
the warm sandy beaches of the Sunrise Trail. And cock
your ear to the seafaring legends of the Marine Drive. Worthy
"off-course" pursuits deepen the pleasure of golfing in Nova
Scotia’s Northeast
Golf Region. Here
the seascapes are
many and varied and,
as throughout Nova
Scotia, the ocean is
never more than 30
minutes away.
Dabble in a little
prehistoric detective
work. Every day the
surging tides of the Bay of Fundy reveal hundred-million-yearold fossils and semi-precious gems lodged in the Triassic cliffs
of the Glooscap Trail. Savour plump blueberries, crisp wines
and rich seafood at a gathering of the clans, where the people
of the Sunrise Trail celebrate with fiddle and fling their still
vibrant Scottish heritage.
Sherbrooke Village
Nova Scotia’s past springs to life along the Marine Drive,
where historic towns and villages vividly recall centuries long
gone. Visit a restored 18th-century fishing village at
Fisherman’s Cove, a 19th-century lumbering and shipbuilding
town at Sherbrooke Village and an early 20th-century fisherman’s house at the Fisherman’s Life Museum. Angle in the
Liscombe River, hike
along Mushaboom
Harbour at Taylor
Head National Park
and kayak through
saltmarshes
that
teem with wildlife
and mirror Nova
Scotia’s widespread
natural splendour.

Thompson’s legacy is a national treasure to be
played, experienced and enjoyed - capturing
Scottish traditions in both setting and colorful
Celtic names for the holes. Having earned a
5-star ranking in Golf Digest’s most recent
(2000) “Best Places to Play” ranking,
Highlands Links is now listed among the elite
of golf and noted in Golf Digest as "perhaps
Canada’s finest course."
Thompson’s adage that "Nature must always
be the architect’s model" is fully evident
throughout the "topsy turvy fairways, the
superb collection of par fives, the strategic,
natural holes and the greens that are small and
well guarded" (Golf Magazine, Sept 99).
Highlands Links is also the first course in
Atlantic Canada to hold the designation of
"Certified Audubon Co-operative Sanctuary."

CAPE BRETON GOLF REGION
BELL BAY golf club
T
he beautiful Bell Bay Golf Club is in the
quaint village of Baddeck, Nova Scotia.
Bell Bay sits high above Cape Breton's
inland sea, the Bras D'Or Lakes, offering
incredible panoramas from almost every
hole. The course overlooks Beinn Bhreagh,
Alexander Graham Bell's beloved summer
estate. Bell Bay has played host to many
high profile events, such as; The 2001
Wayne Gretzky and Friends Invitational, The
2000 Canadian Club Champions
Championship - RCGA, 2000 and 2001
RCGA Future Links Atlantic Championships,
2001 Nova Scotia Junior Championship, and
the 1998 and 1999 Canadian Tour Event
"The Bell Bay Matches".
In 1998, Bell Bay was awarded "Best New
Canadian Golf Course" by Golf Digest. The
routing of the course takes full advantage of
the natural features of the land and each
hole has a distinctive element that makes it
both unique and memorable.
Bell Bay is distinguished by its final four
holes, which have been called one of the
best finishing sequences anywhere. A strong
candidate for the signature hole is the
seventeenth par 3, "Banshee." The drastic
elevation changes, ravine and a green that
is set in a pocket of trees on the other side
offer an illusion to the golfer's normal distance perception and it is easy to underhit
the shot. The true signature hole though is
saved for last. "Breadalbane" is one of the
most scenic tee shots in golf. A sweeping
panorama of the Bras d'Or Lakes and
Alexander Graham Bell's summer estate can
take one’s attention away from this par 5
finishing hole. Starting with a tee shot over
a great gorge, the hole winds it's way to the
clubhouse silhouetted by the Highlands in
the background.
