Frequently Asked Questions about...
Why Should I Choose The Maltby Design Clubmaking
Academy?
Your clubmaking career deserves the best instruction you can get!
Our Academy is the only school created and designed by Ralph
Maltby, the golf industry's pioneer of clubmaking instructional
schools, books, components and clubhead design. Golf equipment
experts and PGA pros from all over the world have attended the
Maltby Design Academy for over 25 years. Now you can, too!
Describe The Instructors. We are extremely proud of our curriculum but prouder still of the skill level and teaching ability of
our Academy instructors. Each instructor is specifically selected
from a wide range of applicants to effectively teach in a fun, yet
knowledgeable manner while maintaining a special accessibility
to all our students. Collectively, our staff has over 100 years of
clubmaking experience.
What Is Included With My Tuition? Along with the most
advanced and respected clubmaking instruction you can find, the
Maltby Design Academy includes, at no extra cost, selected
instructional textbooks by Ralph Maltby and free clubmaking
components and supplies by such famous names as UST, True
Temper, Aldila, Golf Pride and Lamkin.
Should I Bring My Spouse? Absolutely! The Newark /
Granville area is full of fascinating and attractive places to shop
and visit! Among these are the corporate headquarters of the
world-famous Longaberger Basket Company, the antique shops in
the village of Granville (a beautiful village dating back to the
early 1800s) and Roscoe Village, a historically-restored canal
town in Coshocton.
What Type Of Students Attend The Academy? For over two
decades the Maltby Design Academy has trained and hosted
clubmakers of all skill levels from around the world. From PGA
professionals to retirees, pro shop managers to hobbyists, you will
be joining a diverse group of classmates. While the backgrounds
of our students are diverse, all share a special desire to improve
their clubmaking expertise.
Will I Be An Expert Clubmaker When I Leave? The level of
skill and expertise is directly related to the effort that you put
into your learning experience and also how you continue your
education after you successfully complete your program. We are
confident at the Maltby Design Academy that you will not find a
more complete or better structured learning center anywhere in
the world. Remember too, as the industry leader in clubmaking,
component design and instruction, our technical expertise is
second to none. Period. In fact, we're so confident, we guarantee
your satisfaction or we will gladly refund your tuition. However,
in 25 years of instruction, we have never been asked to do so.

STATE-OF-THE-ART TRAINING
FROM THE TECHNICAL EXPERTS
The Maltby Clubmaking Academy proudly presents
our 2008 state-of-the-art clubmaking program. We
have been conducting professional golf club repair, fitting and assembly schools since 1982. During that
time, we have hosted thousands of students from all
over the world. Unlike other companies who teach
club repair and actually repair very few clubs, we
repair thousands of clubs yearly. Among the people
who have placed faith in us to provide them with
a well-rounded knowledge of golf club repair, fitting
and assembly are individuals who are currently working for companies like Callaway, Titleist, Golf Digest,
Nike, True Temper, UST, Golf Galaxy, Bass Pro
Shops, Dick's Sporting Goods and more.
Our premier technical experts provide you with the
most comprehensive clubmaking instruction offered in
the industry today. Our classes qualify for the PGA
and LPGA Continuing Education Programs and are
approved by the Professional Clubmakers Society.
The academy’s instruction manuals are written by
Ralph Maltby, who is the leading authority on club
design, fitting, and repair.
The courses include individual and group instruction,
along with the use of fully equipped personal work
areas and specialty assembly areas. The school provides use of the latest tools, equipment and gauges, as
well as providing you with all of the technical references you will need for your assignments throughout
class. You will leave school with finished products
and the satisfaction of knowing that you can accomplish the job yourself.
The GolfWorks is dedicated to the art of clubmaking.
Our primary goal is to provide you with the knowledge you will need to be the best clubmaker you can
be. Our staff will de-mystify how clubs are made;
expose you to the procedures professionals use in
manufacturing and research labs; and enlighten you on
different materials used and methods of implementation. We offer you the most up-to-date information in
the industry, show you the latest techniques, tools and
equipment, and provide you with indispensable handson experience that you need to succeed. Testimony
from graduates worldwide confirm that The Maltby
Clubmaking Academy has the most outstanding classes and are by far, the best. We guarantee it!
2008 FITTING ASSEMBLY
& REPAIR SCHOOL
The most comprehensive training program available
in clubmaking today. This course has set the standard
for complete clubmaking and repair instruction for
two decades! During the course of this five-day session, each critical element of clubmaking (fitting,
assembly and repair) receives extensive individual
attention. An added bonus for attendees of this session is a tour of the Maltby Design Golf Club Studio,
where you will see one of the most complete and elaborate R&D prototype centers in the golf industry.
Your tuition includes two instructional books, five
videos, and a computerized fitting evaluation. You
will receive a $100 merchandise credit allowing you
to purchase the necessary components of your choice
to assemble your own club(s). You will be assigned
your own fully equipped work area where you can
learn hands-on procedures with the assistance of our
excellent staff. These include:
The fitting procedures taught in this program are
based on Ralph Maltby’s book, The Complete Golf
Club Fitting Plan. This book introduced the golf
industry to the concept of dynamic fitting and serves
as the standard for comprehensive fitting today. You
will learn how to properly match each critical equipment parameter to the swing requirements of the
golfer. With the introduction of the Maltby Playability
Factor – the first quantitative guide to clubhead playability – the fitting instruction you will receive has
added significance. You will gain an understanding of
how a golf clubs specifications affect your ability to
score. These include:
Fitting
• How mass and dimensional properties affect golf
club performance
• Loft, Lie and club length
• Swingweight and total weight
• Shaft flex, materials, designs and patterns
• Grip size, materials, models
• Set make-up
Upon mastering the practice of dynamic fitting, you
will learn how to custom build golf clubs to fulfill
those fitting recommendations. No matter what your
skill level – hobbyist, shop owner, PGA Professional
or golf industry technical expert – this portion of the
Fitting, Assembly and Repair School will hone your
skills to make you more successful! Every key assembly skill is discussed and demonstrated by our staff,
and then you take that knowledge to the workbench to
do it yourself. Critical tasks covered include:
The GolfWorks has long been recognized as the foremost authority on golf club restoration and repair. But
this isn’t your father’s repair school. (Note:
Persimmon wood refinishing is not taught). The
emphasis is on the most sought after club repair skills
that allow you to repair today’s modern equipment.
Topics covered include:
Repair
• Refinishing metal woods
• Stainless Steel Iron Refinishing
• Reshafting irons and metal woods – steel and
graphite shafts – bore thru and non-bore thru heads
• Applying a satin, high polish or tumble finish on an
iron and metal wood
• Measuring width/depth of scorelines
• Removing and installing grips
• Short-cuts, timesavers and solutions to repair
challenges
• Adjusting loft and lie
• Ferrule finishing
During the week, you will also take part in a discussion that will dispel any myths or misconceptions you
may have about golf equipment. Learn the truth about
the performance of titanium woods, inserts in irons,
bi-metal technology and composite shafts. Bring any
questions or opinions you might have. Our Tech Staff
will know the answer, or they will find out!
Assembly
• How to use basic and advanced assembly
equipment
• How to speed turn ferrules
• How to install a straight grip every time
• How to achieve proper swingweights
• How to assemble using a frequency analyzer
• Expert “tricks of the trade”
• Measuring golf club specifications

THE 2008 ADVANCED SHAFT
TECHNOLOGY SCHOOL
2008 PROFESSIONAL
CLUBFITTING SCHOOL
The Maltby Design Professional Clubfitting School
takes basic clubfitting to the next level. While
reviewing, understanding and mastering the basics
of properly fitting a golfer with the proper equipment, students will be given detailed information on
the materials used in modern equipment and the
effect they have on performance. Students will learn
the proper way to measure the specifications of a
golf club and learn how to properly adapt the specifications to fit any golfer.
Students will also learn to properly fit the entire set
of clubs to the golfer’s game. The procedures for
properly fitting woods, irons, hybrids and wedges
will be covered. Also, the proper fitting of putters to
the player’s game using the Maltby Putter Fitting
System will be covered.
The golf swing as it relates to the proper fitting of
equipment is also covered. Understanding the cause
and effect relationship of the golfer's swing and the
effect on ball flight and performance is a key in professionally fitting a player to the right clubs. This
cause and effect relationship is studied and the student will spend time evaluating different types of
swings and the effect they have on ball flight. Once
completed, the students will have a sound understanding of the effect the golfer's swing has on ball
flight and how to address this key part of the clubfitting process.
The fitting procedures taught in this program are
based on Ralph Maltby’s book, The Complete Golf
Club Fitting Plan. Not only will you learn how to
properly match each critical equipment parameter to
the swing requirements of the golfer, you will
receive in-depth instruction about the Maltby
Playability Factor – the first quantitative guide to
clubhead playability. That, combined with the extensive experience of the Maltby Design staff, makes
this a must for any clubmaker serious about fitting
their customers with the proper equipment.

New for 2008, The Maltby Shaft Technology School
takes the understanding of golf shafts to a whole
new level. Students will be given a complete
overview of the shafts role in golf club performance,
including a complete review of shaft terminology
and the manufacturing process of both steel and
graphite composite shafts. All aspects of frequency
matching will be covered, including the features and
proper use of The Golfworks Frequency Analyzer,
proper shaft trimming to achieve the desired flex,
measuring and plotting clubs on a frequency graph
and head specifications and their effect on frequency. Each student will build a set of irons using the
frequency matching process. Students will also
learn how to determine the overall flex profile of a
shaft, using frequency, and how to apply this information to the shaft selection process.
Students of the Professional Shaft Technology
School will be taken through an in depth study of
shaft trimming and how the process affects the flex
and playability of a shaft. Shaft fitting principles
will also be covered. The students will complete a
review of the Maltby Playability Factor for shafts
and how to use it as a fitting tool. It is required that
each student have experience in golf club assembly*. It s recommended (not required) that each student bring their personal set of clubs to use for a
portion of the evaluation process. All supplies, tools
and text materials will be provided.

2008 HOME STUDY SCHOOL
Technology has changed virtually every aspect
of our lives, including how we learn. Now, if you are too
busy to attend a Maltby Clubmaking Academy School in
person, you can learn the essentials of quality clubmaking
and repair at home, while still getting some of the one-onone instruction you would receive by attending our school
in Newark, Ohio!
The Golf Club Design, Fitting and Assembly Home Study
School is a terrific application of off-campus learning.
Through this interactive program, you will learn and be
tested on all critical aspects of clubmaking. Our principal
instructors, the same Maltby Design Technical Staff members who lead our schools in Newark, will provide you
with a complete curriculum and will be available
to answer your questions. To validate your comprehension of the lessons provided, you will assemble a wood,
iron and putter and have them evaluated by the instructor.
It’s a great way to learn from the best, even if you can't
come visit us in person.
Your tuition fee covers course materials, including components required to assemble a wood, iron and putter, a
home study workbook and an instruction manual.
