Hiking Fimmvörðuháls
Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail is extremely popular
and during the last few years it has become even
more so. One of the reasons being the volcanic
eruption that took place in the middle of the
trail in 2010. The hike takes you through a
pass between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and
Mýrdalsjökull and takes about 7-10 hours to
complete, depending on hike’s pace.
This Hiking On Your Own passport option can be
used for the Fimmvörðuháls hike as a ticket for
transfer along routes:

The Hiking On Your Own Passport is the ideal
way to experience two of Iceland’s most popular
hiking routes. You simply purchase one passport
and with it you get bus transfer from Reykjavík
to the base of the hike and again to Reykjavík
from the hike’s destination when you are done.
You can take as much time for the hike as you
please, provided it falls within the passport’s
time frame (13 June – 8 September). The passport is valid for one transfer in either direction.

The Kjölur route runs across the interior of Iceland.
The terrain is rugged and the vast surroundings
give you a sense of peaceful isolation. The south
shore of Iceland has many unique contrasts; lush
green fields and black sand beaches; endless flat
landscapes and steep cliffs; glistening glaciers
and the unforgiving seashore. The fjords of the
east are home to fishing villages and untouched
nature where the mountains rise straight up from
the ocean. In the north you will see lava fields,
lakes and have a change to connect with tours

Skaftafell is at the base of Öræfajökull, a part
of Vatnajökull National Park, Europe’s biggest
glacier. The National Park covers roughly half
of the glacier along with the Laki area and other
parts of the wilderness around. The bus will
take you right up to the service centre, next
to the campsite. It is the base of many good
hiking trails both for the inexperienced and
the most seasoned hiker.

Kjölur highland route, the birch forests at Þórsmörk
nature reserve, the moss covered Laki craters,

From Akureyri, in the north, you can connect with

between Skaftafell and Landmannalaugar
where you will observe dramatical changes in
the landscape – vast black sands, glacial rivers,
lava fields, multicoloured mountains, volcanic
rifts and endless moss.

daily departures at 08:00 from Skaftafell to
Kirkjubæjarklaustur and via the Mountainback

Jökulsárlón
The lagoon is around 18 square kilometres with
numerous icebergs floating around and truly
worth seeing at least once. Skaftafell is a very
popular destination and the home to many good
hiking trails and a beautifully situated camp site.
Route

September with departure from Höfn at 08:00
every morning. It makes a rather long stop at
Jökulsárlón so you can even go on the optional
boat tour at the lagoon. Arrival at Skaftafell is at
12:15 with return back to Höfn at 17:30, making
a short stop at Jökulsárlón before arriving at
Höfn at around 19:30

three connections from Skaftafell to Jökulsárlón

The route starts with a drive across Hellisheiði
heath, through the towns of Hveragerði and Selfoss, before proceeding to the Geysir geothermal
area, the site of numerous hot springs, Strokkur
being the most active one today. The majestic
Gullfoss waterfall is next on the agenda before
the drive up north to the high plain of Kjölur
begins. The name refers to the plateau between
the glaciers Langjökull in the West and Hofsjökull
in the East, at an altitude of 650 metres above
sea level.
The highland road leads through rugged wilderness to the oasis of Hveravellir, which is a geothermal area with natural bathing possibilities.
After a brief stop the bus continues along the
highland road past Blönduvirkjun hydroelectric
power plant. The tour ends in Akureyri.
