Enduring heritage with
a modern twist
Totnes Castle
Featured by Nicholas Crane in
the recent BBC ‘Town’ series as
the birthplace for a new vision of
urban living, Totnes still retains
a warm and friendly feel. The
town’s complex character yet
relaxed ambience draws visitors
from all around the world, many
of whom then decide to make
Totnes their home.
Totnes has a positive hold on
its considerable heritage.
There are numerous historic
monuments and notable
buildings, of which the town
is justifiably proud. There are
quirky features, too. A glimpse
of tucked-away passages evokes
Totnes past. Look at the roof
ridges on some of the houses
in South Street to see ceramic
cockerels by contemporary
potter Colin Kellam.
The Brutus Stone
According to legend, Totnes
is where the British people
had their origins. Following
the Trojan War, the defeated
Trojans sailed off to find
a new home. Eventually
they reached a beautiful
island where their leader
Brutus sprang ashore onto a
granite boulder, the Brutus
Stone, and
proclaimed
“Here I stand
and here I
rest, and this
town shall be
called Totnes.”

leaders perished on the
return journey. The 150th
anniversary of the start of
the ill-fated mission was

Look up!
When you walk around town,
have a look at the top of the
buildings and you’ll spot some
of the best details.
4 Returning to Fore Street,
walk up the hill taking time
to observe the rich variety
of architectural styles above
the shops. Many of these
properties were built for the
town’s wealthy merchants in
the 16th and 17th centuries,
with slate-hung frontages
added later.
7 The Elizabethan House
Museum is one of the finest
restored Tudor town houses
in the country. Built in about
1575 for cloth merchant
Walter Kellond, it has twelve
galleries, a courtyard, and a
herb garden. It contains a wide
range of exhibits and a room
devoted to Charles Babbage
who originated the concept of
the computer. A study centre
for local and family history
deals with requests from all
over the world and Totnes
Museum Society organises
regular events.
8 Pass beneath the East
Gate Arch, once the gateway
to the medieval town and
faithfully reconstructed after a
devastating fire in 1990.
9 Climb the steps to the
cobbled Ramparts Walk,
following the line of the old town
wall behind St Mary’s Church.
11 The late 15th-century Parish
Church of St Mary is built of
deep red Devon sandstone and
it is particularly noted for its 120
foot tower and stone roodscreen.
12 Returning to the High Street,
notice the house of Nicholas
Ball (now Barclays Bank), a
prosperous merchant whose
widow married Thomas Bodley
in 1586, using her wealth to
found his great library at Oxford.

Rotherfold Square, once a
cattle market.

arcade known as Butterwalk
was built in Tudor times to
protect dairy stalls from the
weather, whilst the covered
Poultry Walk opposite sheltered

10 Totnes Guildhall was built
in 1553 on the ruins of the
medieval priory, founded in
1088. It was the heart of the
town’s administrative, legal and
ceremonial life for centuries,
serving as court, prison and
meeting place. Still in regular
use, it has a unique and
unforgettable atmosphere.
The Narrows
18 Turn left into Leechwell Street
then into the attractive narrow
pathway of Leechwell Lane
where you find the ancient
Leechwell, a channelled natural
spring reputed to have healing
properties. From here you can
easily return to the town centre
for refreshments.

15 Opposite, by the Civic Hall,
enjoy the Pannier markets held
each Friday and Saturday,
and the Elizabethan Charity
and Craft Market on summer
Tuesday mornings.

5 Look out for the 18th-century
Gothic house in Bank Lane,
and the imposing Mansion of
1795, once the grammar school
and now used for community
education.
6 The Brutus Stone, set into
the pavement opposite Atherton
Lane, features in legend as the
place where Brutus the Trojan,
founder of the British people,
first stepped ashore.

16 At the top of the High Street
turn right into Castle Street
to Totnes Castle (English
Heritage) build by Judhael, the
11th-century Norman overlord
of Totnes. From the ramparts
appreciate the castle’s superb
defensive position and enjoy
magnificent 360 degree views.

more about the town’s

Totnes
Town Mill
Home of Totnes Information
Centre and Totnes Image Bank
and Photographic Archive
Restored during the 1990’s, the mill is also an attraction
in its own right. The present mill building may date from
the 16th century, although it has been altered and enlarged since
that time.
One working waterwheel can be seen and, inside
the mill, part of the mechanism which drove the millstones
has been reconstructed. A millstone and a very early example of
a water turbine are both displayed at the rear of the building.
The mill is accessible when the Information
Centre is open and entry is free.
Opening times will vary throughout the year so
please check before visiting. Closed on Sundays.

Come and see the beautiful premises, which were
rebuilt as the meeting place of the Merchant Guild,
and feel the history at the former local Magistrates’
Court which was used from 1624 to 1974.
See the original cells where, until 1887, prisoners
awaited trial and punishment. Climb the 17th century
stairs to the elegant Council Chamber, with its plaster
frieze and the table where Oliver Cromwell sat in
1646, and admire the ceremonial robes, most of them
still in use, in the Mayor’s Parlour.
The Guildhall, peacefully situated on Ramparts Walk,
behind the busy High Street, is full of fascinating objects
and memories. Joint ticket with Totnes Museum available.

Riverside Walk to the
Dartington Estate
This walk is one of several
leading from Totnes. Start at
the Totnes Bridge and follow
the River Dart upstream
towards the Dartington Estate.

You’ll find many interesting things to see and do in

River Cruises
River cruises from Totnes
carry you along the stunningly
beautiful River Dart to Dartmouth
and to Greenway, the summer

Leechwell Garden
Located close to the ancient
Leechwell, this dog-free green
space has a herb garden, a
seating area, a climbing area
for children made from natural
resources, frog ponds and art
sculptures. It’s a perfect place
in town to chill out with a

steam on the picturesque South
Devon Railway between Totnes
Littlehempston Station and

when the tide is right, catch the

region. Within a short time you could be hiking on
the moors or dipping your toes in an aqua sea.
The Dartington Estate
Originally built in 1388 for the
Earl of Huntingdon, half brother
to Richard II, Dartington was
restored to its former glory
by visionaries Dorothy and
Leonard Elmhirst in the early
20th-century. The tranquil and
secluded setting now provides
a great venue for arts, music
and film events. The gardens
make an enchanting visit at any
time of year. High Cross House,
now managed by the National
Trust, is also located here.

AROUND TOTNES
Hiking and cycling are wonderful ways to immerse
yourself in the countryside and appreciate the
beauty of the area. Totnes is very close to the
South West Coast Path and to Dartmoor.
Get your boots on!
Walking is an activity to be
enjoyed all year round and
there are trails and paths here
suitable for all.
Walk through lush green
countryside, along historic
water courses and by ancient
ruins. Seek enthralling
moorland views or breath in
pure sea air on the stunning
South West Coast Path.
South Devon Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty
(AONB) produce a range
of downloadable town and
countryside trails.

Longmarsh
Riverside Walk
Easy/flat
1 mile/1.6km round trip
Once the old rifle range,
now given over to wildlife,
conservation and gentle
recreation. This accessible
riverside trail is right next to
the River Dart and perfect for
a simple Sunday afternoon
stroll. It’s popular with
dog walkers too. Start the
path at Steamer Quay or at
Longmarsh itself, just past
Totnes Rowing Club. Walk
from town or there are pay
and display car parks at both
spots. Watch the rowers as
they scull down the river or
canoeists sedately paddling
by. Vary the return route to
come through the wooded
(and sometimes muddy)
conservation area. You may
see all manner of birdlife,
including kingfishers.

a programme of independently
run guided walks and activities
throughout the year.

Totnes to Marldon Walk
Mainly easy/flat
5 miles/8km round trip
A level trail from Totnes to
The Shops at Dartington
(formerly The Cider Press
Centre), where you can stop
for refreshment before your
return journey. Part of this
route is access for all. Start
the path at Totnes Bridge,
follow the riverside path
past Totnes Weir. Below the
weir is a sandbank, a resting
point at low tide for gulls,
ducks and other wildfowl.
Wildlife along the route may
include cormorants, swans,
seals and the elusive otter.
Continue on the cycle trail,
alongside Queen’s Marsh, or
extend the walk through the
Dartington Estate. Beautiful
formal gardens, a tiltyard and
several sculptures, including
one by Henry Moore, await

Medium climbs
5.5 miles/9km (part of the
John Musgrave Trail)
This walk, part of the 35 mile
John Musgrave Trail, follows
ancient pathways through
farmland and woodland.
It offers wonderful scenic
variety. Start the path at
Bourton Road. As you climb
out of Totnes along Bourton
Lane, note the old hedges,
teeming with wildlife in the
spring and summer. Look
back for views of the town
and the Dart Valley. To the
north, in the distance, are
Denbury Hill Fort, once home
of the Dumnonii Celtic Tribe,
and Haytor. Follow the course
of the Gatcombe Brook, past
the dramatic presence of
Berry Pomeroy Castle, and
beyond to eventually reach
Marldon. Just past the village
is organic Occombe Farm,
with its own nature trail and
education centre, great for
children. Free entry.

South Devon is hilly with a
landscape of high hedgerows
and narrow country lanes, often

2 Cycleway
The Dart Valley Cycleway
is an off-road route which
passes right through Totnes.
The town is located on the
midpoint, between the villages
of Dartington and Ashprington.
There are rewarding scenic
views to be enjoyed on this
seven-mile linear trail and
though strenuous in parts there
are some level sections too.
At the Ashprington end of the
route, you can easily divert to
visit Sharpham Vineyard and
Cheese Dairy, for a relaxing
afternoon treat after all your
hard work. You can download

The markets in Totnes have a
reputation as some of the best
and most unusual in Devon.
The general market takes
place on Friday and Saturday
throughout the year and is
held on the Civic Square, just
off High Street in the centre of
the town. Here you can buy
anything from vintage boxes
to fresh fish from a specialist
fishmonger. A collectables and
flea market also takes place
in the Civic Hall, above the
Square, on Fridays. The early

The author Mary Wesley,

latter years of her life, loved
the markets in the town.
Look out for an intriguing
and amusing bronze of her
likeness in an unusual place!
Totnes currently has a high

Jump on Bob, our local
community bus with distinctive

Monday to Friday, it’s the only
bus service that can carry you
up the main street. Board him
from opposite the Royal Seven
Stars Hotel. It’s free with an
English bus pass. If you are
visiting, pick him up from the
bus stop near to the mainline

and clothes ‘swap’ events,

Totnes is a communication hub for the area. It has
excellent road and rail links, making it an ideal
choice as a holiday destination or as a base for work.
By train
Totnes is easy to reach
by rail and the station is
about a 10 minute walk
into the town centre.
Totnes is on the mainline
from London (Paddington)
to Penzance. From the
Midlands, the North, Scotland
and Wales, train services
are through Bristol.

South Devon Railway is a
heritage railway line from
Buckfastleigh to Totnes.

By road
Totnes is about 5 miles off the
main A38 Devon Expressway,
midway between Exeter
and Plymouth. From Exeter
direction, take the A384 exit.
From Plymouth direction take
the A385. The A38 is linked to
the M5 at Exeter and the M4
at Bristol. Totnes is a route
centre with good road links
to other towns and villages
in South Devon.
By bicycle
Totnes is on Sustrans Cycle
Route NCN2. The section
which passes through Totnes
from Dartington to Ashprington
is mainly off road.

Express. There are six direct
coach services a day to and
from Totnes calling at Heathrow
