The sophomore quarterback was 13-of-27 passing for 261 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 12 times for 62 yards. His 62-yard scoring pass to Justin Matthews gave Wagner its first lead at 12-7. After Bryant reclaimed the lead early in the second quarter, Doscher delivered again. This time, the native Staten Islander threw a six-yard scoring strike that put Wagner ahead for good with 3:20 remaining in the opening half. NEC Football Defensive Player of the Week Alex DiMichele, Robert Morris Sr., LB, 6-2, 240, Pittsburgh, PA/Sto-Rox DiMichele becomes the third Robert Morris defender in the last four weeks to receive Northeast Conference recognition. His game-high 19 total tackles stifled the Saint Francis offense in a 35-14 road win over the rival Red Flash. The veteran linebacker also made a key interception and logged a quarterback hurry to help RMU remain undefeated in league play. With Saint Francis looking for the game-tying score on a 3rd-and-goal from Robert Morris 8-yard line, DiMichele came up with his first interception of the season to preserve the Colonials’ 14-7 lead heading into halftime. Leading the Colonials to a fourth consecutive victory, three of which have come against NEC members, DiMichele limited the Red Flash to a gain of three yards or fewer on 10 of his tackles. NEC Football Special Teams Player of the Week Justinian Mason, Albany R-Fr., FS, 6-1, 190, Mason, OH/Cincinnati St. Xavier Mason was at the forefront of a superb all-around effort by UAlbany’s special teams unit in a 23-20 road victory over Yale. The red-shirt freshman, who is listed as a free safety, scored a first-quarter special teams touchdown and later made a drive-extending catch with the punt team on the field. Mason erased a 6-0 deficit when he scooped up a blocked punt and ran seven yards for a score with 3:31 left in the opening quarter. With Albany lined up to punt on its first possession of the second period, Mason converted a 4th-and-5 situation by hauling in a 28-yard pass from Andrew Smith. NEC Football Rookie of the Week Eric Spillane, Monmouth Fr., PK, 6-1, 195, Howell, NJ/Colts Neck Spillane remained perfect on the season and notches his first NEC Rookie of the Week award as a result. The freshman placekicker scored 14 points in Monmouth’ 44-17 road win over Northeast Conference rival Duquesne. Helping the Hawks snap a three-game season-opening slide, Spillane connected on all three of his field goal tries - from distances of 20, 45, 34 yards - and has made the first seven attempts of his collegiate career. He produced Monmouth’s first points of the second half by kicking a career-long 45-yarder midway through the third quarter. Spillane went 5-for-5 on extra-point attempts at Duquesne, upping his season total to 12 PATs. NEC Football Recap - Week Five Alban ale 20 Albanyy 23, Y Yale Freshman tailback Dillon Romain scored on a one-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, and UAlbany (2-2) held on for a 23-20 non-conference victory over Yale (2-1) in the first meeting ever between the two teams. Romain finished with 51 rushing yards and sophomore Andrew Smith added 67 yards on the ground for the Great Danes who will play their first home game of the season on October 9 against Saint Francis (PA). Wagner 29, Bryant 21 Quarterback Nick Doscher compiled 323 yards of total offense and threw three touchdown passes to lift Wagner over Bryant, 29-21, in an NEC clash on Grymes Hill. Two of the scoring strikes came in the second quarter as Wagner (2-2, 1-1 NEC) took a 22-13 lead into the break. Running back Jordan Brown (18 car, 102 yds, TD) logged his fifth consecutive 100-yard rushing performance for Bryant (32, 1-1 NEC), which saw a late potential game-tying drive end on a fumble. Central Connecticut State 24, Sacred Heart 14 Everette Benjamin rushed for 127 yards and one touchdown in Central Connecticut State’s 24-14 NEC victory over Sacred Heart (1-4, 0-3 NEC). While spoiling Sacred Heart’s Homecoming, the defending NEC champion Blue Devils (3-2, 2-0 NEC) remain undefeated in league play. SHU received a pair of first-half touchdown runs from Marcel Archer, but managed only 261 yards of total offense to Central’s 378. Monmouth 44, Duquesne 1 7 17 Monmouth opened by reeling off 31 consecutive points and snapped its-three game slide with an eventual 44-17 road victory over Duquesne. L.J. Caprio scored on a pair of short runs and defensive lineman Dave Ogden returned a interception 31 yards for a touchdown as Monmouth (1-3, 1-0 NEC) built its commanding lead. Duquesne (3-2, 1-1 NEC) finally broke through on Connor Dixon’s four-yard touchdown catch with 1:39 remaining before halftime. The Hawks picked off a total of six passes and held the Dukes to 163 yards through the air. R ober rancis (P A) 1 4 obertt Morris 35, Saint FFrancis (PA) 14 Not even an intense rivalry road game could slow Robert Morris. The Colonials (4-1, 3-0 NEC) extended their win streak to four by posting a 35-14 victory over Saint Francis (PA) (1-3, 1-1 NEC). Robert Morris sophomore quarterback Jeff Sinclair tossed three touchdown passes and his senior halfback Myles Russ rushed 18 times for 137 yards. Both of Saint Francis’ scores came on passes from sophomore John Kelly. NEC Football Notes: NEC Road Warriors Wagner was lone home team to win a Northeast Conference game this past Saturday. Three of the four NEC games on the Week 5 docket were won by the visitors. The Seahawks, who will step out of conference play this week for a visit to Georgetown (Oct. 9), notched its first league win by beating Bryant, 29-21, on Grymes Hill. Meanwhile, Central Connecticut State, Monmouth, and Robert Morris were busy posting road victories. Defending NEC champion CCSU moved to 2-0 in league action by winning at Sacred Heart. Monmouth won at Duquesne in what served as the Hawks' NEC opener. Robert Morris continue to roll by triumphing over Saint Francis in Loretto, PA. UAlbany, the lone team to play a non-league game on Oct. 2, also won on the road, notching a 23-20 win at the historic Yale Bowl. NEC Prunes the Ivy The Northeast Conference won two of the season's three scheduled meetings against Ivy League competition. Wagner broke into the win column by thumping Cornell, 41-7, on September 18. The following week Sacred Heart faced an Ivy League member for the first time in program history and missed the potential game-winning field goal with 44 seconds remaining in the 21-19 setback. Albany, which was only one of two NEC teams who entered the season having faced an Ivy foe during the past decade, notched a 23-20 road win at Yale on October 2. The Great Danes lost their prior three games against Ivy League competition - vs. Brown (2003, 2004) and vs. Cornell (2006) - before notching the program's first win this past week. Central Connecticut State became the first-ever NEC team to defeat an Ivy League member when it posted a 22-13 road win at Columbia in 2009. It's All About The Benjamin Central Connecticut State's Everette Benjamin (Massapequa, NY/Hofstra) is quickly becoming a fan favorite with his new team. The senior running back, who transferred to CCSU from Hofstra this past offseason, rushed for over 100 yards for the third time in his last four outings to carry the Blue Devils to a 24-14 victory at rival Sacred Heart. Coming off a 188-yard rushing performance against Bryant that earned him NEC Offensive Player of the Week honors, Benjamin ran 24 times for 127 yards and a touchdown to spoil Sacred Heart's Homecoming. Benjamin logged his first 100-yard game as a Blue Devil in a 45-14 win over Bentley back on September 11. Having carried 98 times for 548 yards (5.6 ypc), Benjamin ranks third amongst NEC rushing leaders. In his last season at Hofstra, he garnered all-CAA honors as a fullback. Colonials' Offense Continues to Roll Robert Morris has scored at least 30 points in each of its past four games and has won all four. Senior running back Myles Russ (Boca Raton, FL/West Boca) and sophomore quarterback Jeff Sinclair (Natrona Heights, PA/Highlands) continue to blossom under the great offensive mind of Joe Walton. Russ exceeded the 100-yard rushing mark for a third time this season when he ran 18 times for 139 yards (7.7 ypc) in a 35-14 road win at Saint Francis (PA). The performance moved Russ (3,481) past former Saint Francis great Todd Harris (3,414) and into fifth in the NEC's all-time rushing list. The 5-foot-8 Floridian sits second on the 2010 NEC rushing leader board with a 114.6 yards per game average. Meanwhile, Sinclair has thrown for more touchdowns this season than any other NEC signal caller. The 6-foot-4 Pennsylvanian has 13 touchdown passes after connecting on three scoring strikes against Saint Francis. Sinclair has completed 52.5 percent of his passes for 1,071 yards over the first five games. Hawks Pick Six Dave Ogden (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) wasn't the lone Monmouth player to pick of a pass in a 44-17 road win over Duquesne, and he wasn't the only one to score a defensive touchdown either. Monmouth made six interceptions in its Northeast Conference opener at Duquesne. The Hawks held the Dukes' passing attack, which entered ranked second in the NEC, to 163 yards. Ogden, a burly defensive end, returned his second-quarter interception 31 yards for a score that boosted Monmouth's advantage to 28-0. Veteran corner Kenny Amsel (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley Reg.) capped the Hawks' scoring on a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown in the game's final minute. It marked the first time in Monmouth's program history that two players return INTs for TDs in the same game. Chris Hogan (Ramapo, NJ/Ramapo) and Kendall Haley (Olney, MD/Good Counsel) accounted for the other four INTs, each making two picks apiece. Haley likely won't ever complain about facing Duquesne. The safety scored the game-winning touchdown in last year's 17-10 home win over the Dukes, returning an INT 65 yards. NEC Teams Can't ‘Trip’ Up Colonials The task may have seemed somewhat daunting at first for Robert Morris. The Colonials' conference schedule began with three consecutive road trips, but Joe Walton's team was not tripped up. RMU is off to a 3-0 NEC start following wins at Sacred Heart (Sept. 11), Wagner (Sept. 25), and Saint Francis (PA) (Oct. 2). The schedule becomes significantly friendlier to Robert Morris over the next five weeks. The Colonials will play their next four NEC games at home sandwiched around an open date. Monmouth will be the first team to visit Joe Walton Stadium in what will be a battle of NEC unbeatens on October 9. Bryant's Brown Not Slowing Down He had done so in each of his previous four games and Saturday's NEC tilt at Wagner was no different. Bryant sophomore running back Jordan Brown (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) rushed for 102 yards at Wagner, marking his fifth consecutive 100-yard plus performance. In addition to his one-yard touchdown rush, Brown scored on a 48-yard catch-and-run in the 29-21 setback. The two touchdowns gave him 10 total scores (8 rush, 1 receiving, 1 punt return) for the season. Brown's 129.4 yards per game and 6.8 yards per carry averages both lead the Northeast Conference. It's the Fourth! Robert Morris has saved its best for last thus far in 2010. The Colonials have scored 85 fourthquarter points in the season's first five games. This past week at in-state NEC rival Saint Francis (PA), RMU put up 21 points in the final period to turn a 14-7 lead into a comfortable 35-14 victory. That performance came one week after the Colonials put Wagner away by scoring 20 points over the final 15:00. In each of the team's four wins, RMU has scored at least two fourth-quarter touchdowns. It all started on September 11 when the Colonials' 21 fourth-quarter points allowed Joe Walton's squad to come away with a 35-31 NEC win at Sacred Heart. One week later, Myles Russ (Boca Raton, FL/West Boca) lifted RMU to a 30-23 victory over then-No. 15 Liberty by rushing for two scores over the final 10:20 of play, including a 12-yard TD scamper with 22 seconds to go. The Colonials have totaled only 61 points over the first three quarters of action this season, a total of 15 quarters. Special Day for UA The Great Danes blocked an extra point, stuffed a punt, and swatted a field goal in their win over Yale. UAlbany also recovered an onside kick in a contest that was dominated by game-changing special teams play. NEC Special Teams Player of the Week Justinian Mason (Mason, OH/Cincinnati St. Xavier) sparked a 17-point run that erased an early 6-0 deficit. The freshman scooped up a blocked punt and took it in for the Danes' first score. UAlbany has historically featured strong special teams play. Current placekicker Herb Glass (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) and sincegraduated kick returner Justin Gannon earned second team all-NEC honors as specialists in 2009. Extra Points The Great Danes had no turnovers in its win over Yale, the first time they've been turnover-free since the 2009 season finale at Wagner. … UAlbany will play its first home game this Saturday (Oct. 9) against Saint Francis (PA). The Great Danes are the lone Division I FBS or FCS program to have not yet played on home turf. … Monmouth's defense held an opponent to under 100 yards rushing for the second straight week, with Duquesne finishing with 77 yards on the ground. … The CCSU Defense limited the Sacred Heart to 185 yards through the air. The Pioneers, who totaled 261 yards of offense in the loss to Central, entered the game as the NEC's top-ranked passing team. … Duquesne freshman Ryan Ho (Pearl City, HI/Kamehameha Schools) accounted for 205 allpurpose yards in the loss to Monmouth. He averaged 47.3 yards over four kickoff returns, including run-backs of 85 and 71 yards. Three Seniors Chase NEC History Robert Morris’ Myles Russ (RB), Sacred Heart’s Dale Fink (QB), and Saint Francis’ Scott Lewis (LB) are continuing the climb up the all-time NEC leader board. Central Connecticut State halted Albany's bid for a third consecutive league title last season, and has followed up by ending UA's four-year run atop the NEC's preseason poll. Coming off their best season in four decades, the defending NEC champion Blue Devils garnered four first-place votes to earn the No. 1 ranking in the annual summer survey of the conference's nine head coaches for the first time in program history. If the preseason prognostication holds true, CCSU will become the first NEC champion to earn the league's newly-acquired automatic berth into the NCAA FCS playoffs. Following a bullish finish to the 2009 season, Robert Morris has its eyes on the prize, too. RMU garnered three-first place votes to finish second in the preseason poll, the results of which were announced by the NEC during its annual preseason media teleconference. Albany, which pulled in one first-place nod, took third. Claiming the lone remaining firstplace vote, Wagner was fourth ahead of fifth-place Monmouth. Bryant earned the sixth spot followed by Duquesne in seventh. Sacred Heart (eighth) and Saint Francis (PA) (ninth) rounded out the predicted order-of-finish. As a prelude to its 15th season on the gridiron, which kicks off on Sept. 3, the Northeast Conference also announced a 25-member Preseason All-NEC Team during the media call. 2010 Northeast Conference Football Preseason Coaches Poll 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. After 14 years on the gridiron, the conference has finally secured automatic access to the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs. In 2010, the bracket expands from 16 to 20 teams with the addition of two automatic qualifiers and two at-large berths. The NEC has been awarded one of the auto bids and will place its champion into the postseason tournament for the first time in league history. “Not only does this enhance the Conference's football pedigree, but it allows our student-athletes and coaches to compete with the best teams in the country in an NCAA sponsored postseason event,” commented NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris. “The excitement and exposure that comes along with competing in a national championship is invaluable, and will be a fantastic experience for our teams and fans.” Monmouth head coach Kevin Callahan, who has been at Monmouth since the birth of NEC Football in 1996, was equally as excited. “Having an opportunity to play for a postseason berth is something that players in our program have looked forward to for a long time,” said Callahan, who also praised former NEC Commissioner the late Brenda Weare for her efforts. 2010 NCAA FCS Championship Game January 7, 2011 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas The championship game, which will be hosted by the Southland Conference, the City of Frisco and the Hunt Sports Group, will be played at 23,500-seat, multi-purpose Pizza Hut Park each of the next three years. The championship game will be the culmination of a newly expanded 20-team championship bracket, with the field being announced Sunday, November 21, at 10 a.m. (ET) on ESPNU 9/4 9/11 9/18 9/25 10/2 10/9 10/16 10/30 11/6 11/13 NEC Games in Bold Opponent at Dayton at Sacred Heart #15 Liberty at Wagner at Saint Francis (PA) Monmouth Albany Duquesne Central Conn.
