They have to get serious about getting things accomplished, listening to their constituents, and for many, getting themselves reelected in November. In May of this year, I had the opportunity to attend a local Farm Bureau annual meeting here in the Gloucester Matthews area. The speaker was Congressman Rob Whitman. He told the audience about the importance of communication and emphasized that our individual voices can be heard. We can make a difference on issues that impact us—we just need to get involved in the process. Getting involved is not that difficult. During our 2010 Virginia Beef Cattlemen’s Field Day, former Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, Charles F Conner, told the audience that congressional staffers want to hear what you have to have to say about the issues that impact agriculture. Conner lightheartedly remarked that he is a “former” deputy secretary; he told us the incumbents don’t want former in front of their name. By listening to voters, they can stay in office. Tom Field, the moderator for the panel discussion, voiced a similar message with comments about the importance of communicating with our elected officials, especially at this critical time before election. He told the audience about the tools that NCBA provides that make it easy for you to communicate your opinions and positions with your elected officials. Field provided the audience with the NCBA web site, www.beefusa.org that any producer (not only NCBA members) can use to prepare and format letters and/or e-mails to elected government officials. All we have to do is provide our name, zip code and a few other data elements and press Send—it is that easy. Steve Furrow, former Virginia Angus Association president and current Virginia Cattlemen’s Association board member recently attended the NCBA’s Legislative Conference in Washington, DC where cattlemen served as advocates for their industry and all of agriculture. The event was attended by nearly 200 cattle raisers. Ranchers were afforded the opportunity to visit with their respective elected leaders to discuss issues impacting their industry. The issues ranged from taxes to dust regulations. Furrow reported that the election year attitude was prevalent and echoed the words of Conner and Field indicating that the people they visited with were interested and very willing to listen and, for the most part, understanding of the concerns that they voiced during their meetings. Wall Street Journal recently interviewed Donnie Smith, Tyson Foods Inc.'s chief executive. Since assuming that position in November, Smith has helped steer the biggest U.S. meat company out of one of its worst periods ever. Now that profits have replaced record quarterly losses, the interviewer asked Smith about his thoughts on how to stay on track for the future. Smith said, “I've got this little saying: the answer is always in the room. We have to free people up to operate in an environment where there is no fear. We are going to make mistakes. Don't worry about it. Let's fail fast and fail forward. Then take that empowering spirit, and let's go solve some problems.” Like Donnie Smith, we have answers to our individual issues and problems we face. We need to communicate with our decision makers and empower them to fail or succeed, but arm them with the facts to move forward and solve some problems. Get involved! Participants from nine states including New York, Connecticut, Virginia, Indiana, Michigan, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Tennessee gathered at the Holiday Inn Golf and Conference Center in Staunton on Sunday, August 8, 2010 for the welcome reception where they enjoyed some southern hospitality, visited with some old friends and made new ones. The tour guide was Jon Repair, past president of the Virginia Angus Association. The actual tour began early Monday morning with a stop at the famous Shenandoah Caverns. The group then visited Benfield Farm in Deerfield, who provided lunch for the group. The next stop was the CSF Cattle Company in Raphine who also provided a tour and dinner for the group at the Shenandoah Valley AREC. The AREC is the birth place of the International Harvester Company and provided interesting old machinery exhibits for the final stop of the day Tuesday morning began early again with a trip to Berryville where the group toured the popular North American Breeders facility, followed by lunch and a cattle tour at Mountain Valley Angus in Harrisonburg. . Tuesday afternoon found the group on a guided tour through the historical New Market Battlefield. The final events were dinner and a visit to Wehrmann Angus. The 2010 Break Basket of the South tour offered participants a chance to explore some of Virginia’s rich history, tour some progressive Angus operations with cutting edge genetics, and visit with fellow cattle producers. The Virginia Angus Association would like to thank all of the generous sponsors that helped make this memorable event possible. This year’s sponsors were: Boehringer Ingelheim, Pfizer, Fleenor Cattle Co., Vigortone, Accelerated Genetics, Intervet and Valley Vet. The 2010 Bread Basket of the South tour was truly a success. One couple commented “this was the most enjoyable tour, very informative and organized with lots to see and do; Jon was a world of information. We look forward to doing this again”. Virginia Angus also would like to thank all the farms that hosted the cattle tours: Benfield Farm - Don & Juliana Benner: CSF Cattle Co. - C.S. Fitzgerald; North American Breeders - Tim Schofield; Mountain Valley Angus - Mike & Beth Bazzle & Jon Ma; and Wehrmann Angus -- Richard McClung:. The attendees appreciated all the insights the farm hosts provided and the quality of cattle. Without your support and participation, this event would not be possible. The Virginia Angus Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of the Angus breed of cattle. This is accomplished through the organization of sales, field days and events like this as well as marketing. Since this started in 2009 we have raised over $4,200.00 due to the voluntary generosity of our membership and their kind support to our Association. Members taking part have donated the proceeds from a cull cow that they have sent to market. All monies derived from these donations have gone immediately towards off setting the balance of our line of credit. The “Cattle Drive for Prosperity” is an on going endeavor that you can participate in at anytime. Your willingness to take part is very much appreciated as are the donations of the past year. We hope that you will recognize the importance of the “Cattle Drive for Prosperity” to both the immediate and future positive impact of our Association. As you all know these are not strong financial times at home or for your Association. By pledging at least one cow, the Virginia Angus Association will be guaranteed the opportunity to springboard into another 77 years of success as it addresses the needs of you, the membership.
