Pure insanity. That’s the only way to describe the Lucas
Oil NHRA Nationals. Whether you’re talking about the
massive horsepower and incredible speeds on the track,
the absolute madness in The Zoo campground or the
accessibility of the drivers and cars in the pits, everyone
agrees that it’s an event you don’t want to miss.
This year’s Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals will be extra special
as we’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of professional
drag racing at BIR. Plus, the NHRA is celebrating its
60th anniversary. That sounds like a party!
The NHRA Nationals features the biggest names in
drag racing: John Force, Ron Capps, Tony Schumacher,
Larry Dixon, Ashley Force Hood, Minnesota’s own Jason
Line and many more. It’s the world’s fastest dragsters,
the most skilled drivers and a legion of crazy race fans
who can’t get enough of the thunderous power pumped
out by an 8,000-horsepower dragster flying down the
drag strip at 300 mph. That’s why the Lucas Oil
NHRA Nationals is the granddaddy of motorsports in
Minnesota. There’s nothing like NHRA racing!

Family Campground or in the infamous campground

Strap yourself in for the first race of the threerace Outlaw Street Car Series, a wild display of
raw power on the drag strip featuring the “fast
five” classes: Pro Outlaw, Outlaw, King Street,
Real Street Unlimited and Real Street Natural.
Speeds reach 200+ mph and times can be 6-7
seconds. Also featured are eight Index classes,
Strip Eliminator classes and more. Don’t miss

THUNDER AT THE LAKES
NHRA DIVISIONAL RACE
If you want a little taste of what the Lucas Oil
NHRA Nationals is all about, then the Thunder at
the Lakes NHRA Divisional Race is for you. Except
for the pro classes, Thunder features the same
classes that race during Nationals, including Top
Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car. They put the
“thunder” in this event as they rumble down the
quarter mile at over 280 mph, piloted by some
of the top drivers in the NHRA’s Division 5. Great
racing and great family entertainment.

DAY CLASSIC
The National Auto Sport Association is returning
this year with an exciting brand of road racing
on BIR’s Competition Road Course. You’ll see
wheel-to-wheel racing from a wide range of race
cars and high-performance cars such as Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds, Roadsters, Porsches
and BMWs. Practice, qualifying and racing
Saturday and Sunday. Kick off the summer at BIR
by experiencing these two exciting events for one
low price.

The zaniest racing on the
planet returns to BIR’s
Competition Road Course
this year for two races.
The ChumpCar World
Series is all about $500
race cars and endurance
racing, a wicked combination that guarantees
loads of fun for teams and fans alike. On June
4-5, teams of four drivers compete in seven-hour
endurance races each day, mostly for the love of
racing and the chance to wrench on their hunks
of screaming junk. It’s a Dual Event Weekend,
with the Bracket Drag Racing Series on the drag
strip. The July 16 race is a 14-hour endurance
race. Both events are affordable racing for those
who want to give it a try.

Proving Grounds and Jags Midwest Diesel
Shootout is bringing high-pitched sport compacts,
growling smoke-belching diesels and a whole lot

When the Sports Car Club of America brings
its regional race to BIR, the action on the
Competition Road Course is fast and faster.
Formula cars, Mustangs, GTs, sport and vintage
racers, Morgans, TVRs, Lolas – fans are treated
to a wide variety of high-performance cars with
drivers who aren’t bashful on the track. It’s three
full days of incredible wheel-to-wheel road racing
that’s a real treat for fans.

NAPA AUTO PARTS SHOW & GO
The Fourth of July weekend in Brainerd wouldn’t
be the same without the NAPA Auto Parts Show
& Go. More than 400 cars do battle on the drag
strip in classic fashion. It’s the second leg of the
Outlaw Street Car Series featuring the “fast five”
classes that provide crazy speeds (200+ mph)
and raw power for race fans. Off the track, fans
are treated to a classic car show, a fireworks
display, live music Saturday night and activities for
the kids. Join the festivities!
On BIR’s Competition Road Course this weekend
is CRA Superbike Racing. See page 14 for
details. Fans can watch both events for a single

Labor Day weekend can only mean one thing:
wheel-standing, high-powered drag racing! The
23rd Annual Muscle Car Shootout is a perennial
favorite at BIR and will feature the third and final
leg of the Outlaw Street Car Series – the grand
finale! The “fast five” classes will be center stage,
with series championships on the line. You’ll also
be treated to a classic car show, live music and
more. Don’t miss out!

NHRA WEST CENTRAL
SUMMIT RACING ET FINALS
September 16-18
BIR will host the top amateur drag racers from
22 racetracks across the Midwest and Canada
during this annual showdown where the tracks
send a team of up to 37 racers to compete for
team and individual honors, not to mention
bragging rights. Racers compete in five classes:
Super Pro, Pro ET, Sportsman, Motorcycle and
High School. BIR will have a team as well.
It’ll be a slugfest on the blacktop!

The five-race Bracket Drag Racing Series runs
from May-October and features amateur
Sportsman drag racers who slug it out for
series points, prize money and, ultimately,
a series championship. You’ll see dragsters,
cars, pickups, snowmobiles, motorcycles and
Junior Dragsters. You’ll see great drag racing
along with something cool on the road course.
Test & Tune – The Friday before each bracket
race (except Sept. 30) is a Test & Tune that’s
open to anyone.

STREET LEGAL STYLE

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to drag race
on a championship drag strip, here’s your chance.
We open the track to anyone with a street-legal
car, truck or motorcycle that meets NHRA’s
safety requirements. You use the light tree, the
scoreboard and burnout box, just like the pros.
Nine dates on the schedule this year. NAPA representatives are on hand each night to answer
questions about performance, maintenance and
parts. Watch for details about the Verizon Smartphone giveaway Aug. 3. Get the good stuff!

CLUB RACING AT BIR
Club racing accounts for a significant portion of
track use each year at BIR. Clubs rent our tracks
for racing, driving instruction and social events.
Some of the clubs, like the Central Roadracing
Association, welcome fans to watch. Others prefer
to close the track to the public. Regardless, we
value the relationships we have with the clubs that
use BIR and encourage this kind of track use. Visit
our Web site for more information on the clubs
that use the track and the schedule of club events.
Competitive road racing has made a significant
comeback at BIR with the addition of the 2.5-mile,
13-turn Competition Road Course, a challenging
track that allows BIR to offer road racing and drag
racing simultaneously. Look to our Event Schedule
for a list of dual events.
The track is certified by the Sports Car Club of
America, which allows BIR to host super-competitive events like SCCA Pro Racing’s Trans-Am
Series, the SCCA Memorial Day Classic, the
SCCA Jack Pine Sprints and the NASA Midwest
Regional. It’s also home to the BIR Performance
Driving School.
The 3.1-mile, 10-turn Donnybrooke Road Course,
which is BIR’s original track, is still in use after a
colorful 43-year history
of racing. Both tracks
are very popular with car
clubs and the Central
Roadracing Association
for its Superbike racing.

INFORMATION
Rules for Restricted & Family Camping and
Full-Service (Reserved) RV Camping
• No loud music after 10 p.m.
• Generators must be turned off or muffled by 1 a.m.
and exhaust must be vented above the roof.
• No ATV or golf cart traffic after 9 p.m.
Restricted & Family Camping is rustic camping near
the Full-Service RV Campground and is designed for
families with children or those who want a more laid-back
experience. Restrooms and showers are nearby.
Restricted motorized vehicle rules in effect for this area.
Open Camping – ‘The Zoo’ is just over the bridge in
the Competition Road Course infield. It’s rustic camping
that takes on a life of its own during the Lucas Oil NHRA
Nationals. Camping is first come, first served, with
restrooms and showers conveniently located just over
the bridge.
CAMPING RULES
These rules are specific to the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals

Motorized Vehicles (ATVs, Golf Carts, Scooters,
Partywagons, Etc.) – All auxiliary vehicles must display a
BIR Motorized Vehicle Sticker, which can be purchased
at the front gate.
PARKING
Daytime Parking is available on-track for $10 per vehicle
per day, including motorcycles and those with disability
plates or parking certificates.
Premium Daytime Parking is just south of the condos
and costs $60 for Thursday-Sunday. Payable in advance.
Gate Parking is reserved parking near the front gate and
costs $50 for Thursday-Sunday. Payable in advance.
• No outside food or beverages allowed in the racing
pits or Grandstand/Midway area.
• Anyone entering camping areas must wear a camping
wrist band.
• All motorhomes, campers, pop-up trailers, etc.,
must have a Motorhome Pass Sticker positioned on it
and visible from the road.
• No loud music after 1 a.m.
• No glass containers.

Security is provided 24 hours a day during all
spectator events. A security guard is on duty at
the front gate at all times. For security issues,
call 218-824-7215.
Track radio/announcer – BIR now has two radio
frequencies to catch all the racing action.
• 105.3 FM for drag racing and events on the
3.1-mile Donnybrooke Road Course
• 87.9 FM for racing on the 2.5-mile
Competition Road Course
Spectator and participant re-entry – Anyone
wishing to leave and re-enter BIR must have
their admissions ticket scanned on their way out
and again at re-entry. Failure to have your ticket
scanned when exiting will void your ticket.
Parking for non-NHRA Nationals events –
General spectator parking is free and located on
the BIR infield, behind the Grandstands for drag
races and adjacent to most interior roadways for
road racing.
Pets – Pet owners must fill out a pet waiver prior
to entering BIR. All pets must be kept on a leash
at all times and must be attended to. We are a
pet-friendly track, so please pick up after your pet.

CAMPING
• Only one self-contained camping unit is allowed in
each Full-Service RV Campground site.
• Loud music is not permitted after 10 p.m.
• Generators must be turned off or muffled by 11p.m.
• All generators, air compressors, etc., that are
powered by an internal combustion engine must
have the exhaust directed above the top of the
trailer, truck, RV tent, etc., and clear of other
campers’ areas or racers’ pits.

by BIR. If there is no ring, the fire must not
exceed 3 feet in diameter.

DIRECTIONS
From Brainerd heading north: Go 5 miles on Hwy 371 from
the Hwy 210 & Hwy 371 intersection. BIR is on the right.
From Nisswa heading south: Go south from Nisswa on
Highway 371 for 8 miles. BIR is on the left.
From the Twin Cities: Go west on Interstate 94 to the
Clearwater exit. Head north on County Road 24 to Highway
10. West on Hwy 10 to Little Falls. Take Highway 371 north
at Little Falls and stay on the Baxter stretch of Hwy 371.
BIR is 5 miles past Brainerd/Baxter.
