o, you’re choosing a new keyboard — and you’ve
flipped through this edition of ProGear, you’ve
surfed around on sweetwater.com, and you’ve
seen one common theme emerge: there’s an
ocean of gear out there with those familiar black-and-white
keys. And, yes, that observation couldn’t be more true. But,
luckily, you’re in the right place.
From onstage performing to studio tweaking to bedroom composing and
beyond, all different kinds of musicians rely on keyboards to call up their
worlds of sound — thus the influx of keyboards that are optimized for
specific tasks, as well as tons more that are designed to perform well in
nearly any situation. Fortunately, though, the real beauty of the apparent
beast of selection is that the more options there are available, the more
likely you are to find the instrument that’s absolutely perfect for your needs;
the key is to just look inward, think through how you may use the keyboard
— both today and as you grow in the future — and then nail down a set of
must-have criteria.
In this guide, we’re going to step through a few different common keyboard
applications and discuss the current features and technologies that appeal
to each kind of musician. You may be — and likely will be — a hybrid of
these different “categories.” But, hopefully, this will get you started thinking
through many of the big questions, help you navigate your course through
this awesome ocean of instruments, and ultimately give you a leg up on your
way to designing your perfect keyboard setup.
The Singer/Songwriter and the Acoustic Piano Player
Let’s start by taking a look at keyboards through the lens of the singer/
songwriter. Note that many of the keyboard-choosing thought processes that
apply to our singing and songwriting friends also apply to anyone who is
looking for an acoustic-piano-like instrument that plays well, sounds great,
and is considerably more portable than that upright many of us grew up
playing. So, let’s dive in.
Typically, as singer/songwriter or an acoustic piano player, you’ll have
an emphasis on performance, which you should note when looking for
a keyboard. It doesn’t matter whether you really intend to “play out” or
not; if you’re planning to sit for good lengths of time behind your instrument — reading music, playing favorite pieces, or working up your
own creations — then you’re still performing to some extent,
and you’ll want an instrument that makes that a natural
experience. To achieve that, it’s best to pay attention
to a keyboard’s “action” — and there are three

main kinds: synth action, semi-weighted action, and fully weighted action.
For a playing experience most like an acoustic piano’s, you’ll want to go with
the fully weighted keys. Keyboard makers have carefully analyzed the way
an acoustic piano responds and feels, and they have developed amazingly
innovative technologies to make their keyboard keys look, feel, and react just
like an acoustic piano’s. In fact, there are even digital pianos available with
“ivory feel” keys that not only respond the way you’d expect a grand piano’s
to respond, but they also provide an astonishingly accurate sensory feel
beneath your fingers, for an added level of realism.
After action, you’ll want to think about a keyboard’s sound capabilities.
Luckily, virtually all keyboards with built-in sounds feature an amazing grand
piano sound — sometimes even multiple grand piano sounds, which you
can adjust with effects and equalization to create a custom piano sound.
Other keyboards also feature a wealth of additional instrument sounds —
from strings to electric pianos to drums to synthesizer-type sounds to bass
guitars and beyond — and you can often layer those sounds with the main
piano sound, which is great for playing a variety of musical styles. Whatever
kind of soundset you go with, you’ll want to think about whether you choose
a keyboard with built-in speakers or not. Built-in speakers are ideal when
you want a sit-down-and-play solution, without having to power on anything
else to get creative. But, if you’re building a home-studio setup, then you
may already have an easy way into amplified sound — the same goes for
those working through their performance PA systems or for anyone planning
to play through headphones.
Portability comes next, and that’s an easier point to consider. Do you need a
portable keyboard or not? Nearly every digital piano is portable to a certain
extent, so you won’t have to worry about it being a burden if you move from
apartment to apartment or want to move it to a different room. But, if you’re
planning to play shows or take it to jam with friends, then a 70-lb. keyboard
may not be your best bet. Furthermore, if you’re loading the keyboard into
your compact sedan, then you may want to think about choosing a 76-key
or even a 61-key instrument over an 88-key (full size) digital piano. Many
players find that slimming down a few notes on the very top and bottom
ends makes little difference to their actual playing style. Of course, if you’re
not planning to travel with the keyboard, and it’s mainly going to live in your
living room or bedroom, then an 88-key model is a great choice — and
many instruments in our
“Digital Home Pianos”
category even have
included or optional
woodgrain cabinets and
benches, which give them
an even more acoustic-like
appearance and presence.

— including recording features, computer
connectivity, onboard rhythm tracks, and a
built-in metronome. The great thing about a
digital keyboard — beyond being portable
and always staying in tune — is that its
digital technology makes way for a lot of
handy extras. Some keyboards feature a USB
connection, so you can easily connect them
up to your computer and be well on your
way to controlling software virtual instruments or to interacting with educational

music-theory programs. MIDI inputs and
outputs also make this possible, but with
that connection, you’ll need to add a MIDI-equipped interface to interact
with your computer. Beyond computer connectivity, it’s also nice to have
onboard rhythm patterns, controlled by a metronome. You can use the
rhythms for practicing pieces “in time” and even for coming up with new
songs. Adding to that, having built-in recording capabilities makes it really
easy to preserve those new ideas, then to later send them over to your
computer to layer a vocal line, fine-tune each part, and post it to your
online music page.
The Composer and Arranger
It may be that you’re a tried-and-true singer/songwriter taking the next
step toward full-on production and composition — or, maybe you’re
a time-tested composer, seeking out the ultimate solution to turn your
arrangements and orchestrations into great-sounding productions and
pitchable demo CDs. Either way, you’re more than likely going to want a
feature-packed keyboard workstation. These instruments sport a built-in
sequencer plus virtually every instrument sound on the planet, so you have
a one-stop solution for writing, arranging, and producing. Typically, this is
the best option for anyone who wants to work independently of a computer
— just turn it on, and you’re ready to work. Keyboard workstations
also feature built-in effects and a host of handy production and editing
tools — just as you’d find in a software Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).
And, if you already have a DAW you like to work within, some workstations
feature handy file transfer over USB. You can just sit down, build up your
ideas — without ever turning away to look at a computer screen — and
then transfer all of your tracks to your computer for final editing and
polishing — workstations offer a very effective workflow.
For Producers, DJs, and Mobile-production Junkies
With the explosion of software-based creation — from amazingsounding virtual instruments to ultra-tweakable processing plug-ins
to performance-based software suites — the modern DJ, producer,
and musician on the go have an enormous amount of tools available.
Rather than buying a room full of expensive instruments, each great at
a particular task, we can load up our hard drives and make all sorts of
music, wherever we happen to be. But, to effectively access this world of
possibilities, we need an instrument that’s totally playable, tweakable, and
parameter-assignable: meet the MIDI controller.
MIDI controllers continue to become more and more
affordable, and they’re packed with more and more
features. If you’re currently editing parameters

with a mouse and playing virtual instruments with
a basic USB-equipped keyboard, then you owe itt
to yourself to add a knob-laden, button-dense,
fader-rich MIDI controller to your rig. Many
of the best MIDI controllers available today
feature automapping, so their controls
“morph” to accommodate whatever plug-in
or virtual instrument you have on-screen. You
can open up a synth virtual instrument and tweakk

filters and oscillators, just as if the outboard synth
were right in front of you — or you can open up an
fect
EQ plug-in and use both hands to dial in the perfect
splays
setting. Some MIDI controllers even sport LED displays
that lay out over the top of the row of buttons or knobs, so at any given
time, you’ll know just what each control does. Pair this functionality with
performance-based software, and you can program in a ton of MIDI
controls to set up loops, create new tracks, trigger patterns, and control
effects — all in real time.
These controllers are available in a range of sizes, from small 25-key
varieties all the way up to 88-key models. A larger MIDI controller, with 61,
76, or 88 keys, may be best if you want to play virtual piano instruments,
develop massive synth pads, or perform leads across many octaves. In
this case, you may want to choose a keyboard with semi-weighted action,
as it can easily perform double duty for expressive piano-style playing.
Plus, this action style strikes a nice balance between a heavier weightedkey feel and a light synth-action feel. But, if you already have a favorite
piano-controller option or don’t need to have one, then you may want to
go with a small desktop MIDI controller that gives you access to a ton of
parameters within your software programs of choice. An added bonus is
that if you pair a small MIDI controller with your laptop, then you can take
a music creation and production rig anywhere — use it on a plane, at the
coffee shop, or take it to work to finish your project on your lunch break.

For the Stage
If you’re planning to dive into stage performances — whether that’s
solo or with a band — then much of what we’ve already discussed
applies. You’ve got to find the right size of keyboard; it’s got to feel
great; and, most importantly, it has to be loaded with the right kinds of
sounds — and on-the-fly tweakability — you’re wanting. There are a ton
of excellent performance-based keyboards and synthesizers available,
so you can achieve nearly any sound. But, if you already have a cockpit
of vintage synths you jam with on a regular basis, one of the coolest
emerging options we’ve seen lately is to pair up a MIDI controller with a
sound module; it saves you from hauling tons of gear to the gig, and it
keeps your prized synths safe and at home. At first, you hardware-synth
enthusiasts may scoff at the idea of a sound module that can really
contain your unique soundset — but hold on. Today, there are incredible
software options available that can basically “virtual instrumentize”
your favorite pieces of outboard gear, turning them into highly playable
instruments that live inside your computer. Pair that up with a virtualinstrument-playing sound module, and you have instant access to your
entire outboard rig and all of your studio effects plug-ins — and all you
brought to the show was a lightw
lightweight MIDI controller and a rack.
