SOME ISLAND “GROUND RULES” Help "preserve and protect" the environment of these islands. Camping and cooking fires are permitted only in designated areas. Forest closures and prohibitions against beach fires are strictly enforced during high fire hazard times. Hazard conditions are prominently posted. Red cement blocks (and other signage) on a beach indicate shellfish leases. Avoid these areas, particularly at low tide, as walking on them can destroy young shellfish and do not harvest oysters or clams. (A license is required to pick on unmarked shorelines.) Canadian laws still apply on the islands. It is illegal to remove anything from beaches. Please look, learn and leave. Drinking alcohol in public, including beaches, is also illegal. www.hornbyislandcoop.ca ATM 43 96 www.haversdesign.com / Printed in Canada Located 75k north of Nanaimo, Hornby and Denman Islands are unmistakably the ‘Jewels of the Gulf Islands’. Nestled against the east coast of Vancouver Island, our Islands are home to communities of thoughtful, creative, diverse people who value the rural serenity and security of these islands. Spend a day exploring the forests and shorelines on both islands and you will understand why our communities are so passionate about the preservation and protection of these fragile ecosystems. You can swim, kayak and sunbathe in warm weather, and in any weather enjoy hiking, cycling, bird watching and fishing. You can also take the opportunity to visit the many year-round artisans' studios, browse the stores for books, gifts, and edibles, or just relax at your lodgings. Both islands have craft fairs; market days, ongoing community school classes and excellent concerts and theatre productions. Denman and Hornby Islands have many walking and hiking trails plus easy access to the beaches. Like many rural areas, the roads are winding and narrow; pedestrians, cyclists, horseback riders and deer have to share them with cars, so please observe the speed limit and drive carefully. Come and experience Hornby and Denman's natural beauty as well as the cultural and recreational activities for all ages. You might want to come by bicycle to avoid long summer ferry line-ups. For more up-to-date information browse our websites or phone 1-250-335-1642. This friendly neighbourhood consists of a community school offering kids summer programs, two community halls (one with an excellent theatre), a library, church, bookstore, gift shop, bakery and a hardware store. Our two main stores offer everything you could possibly desire: groceries, liquor, propane, gasoline, postal outlet, video rentals, deli food, and sundries. Three of our many B&B’s are located within walking distance of ‘Downtown’, as is the year-round co-op craft outlet. As you tour the Island you will find numerous artisans’ studios/galleries and more B&B’s. (Check the map.) Hornby is a vibrant community that welcomes visitors. Don’t miss the unique opportunity to visit a studio or gallery on the island and take advantage of Hornby’s incredible art scene – potters, painters and poets on practically every corner! We invite you to help us steward this wonderful place – conserve water, slow down, be respectful of your footprint on the island and its people and the island will continue to nourish you for years to come. The first thing you see upon arrival is the Thatch Pub & Restaurant with ATM access, art gallery and a liquor store. Along the main road you will encounter the Hornby Artist Run Gallery and after that is the Cardboard House which houses a bakery, pizzeria, cappuccino bar, clothing & crafts shop and weekly music events. The hand-crafted community hall is Hornby’s cultural centre, showcasing dances, movies, festivals and art shows. Nearby are the Clinic, the Computer Access Centre, the Community School’s Natural History Exhibit and the New Horizons Centre, which also houses the library. The Farmer’s Market (every Wed. and Sat. in the summer behind the Hall) is a great place for fresh produce and local crafts. Sports and social events take place regularly at Joe King Park. For a truly unique Hornby experience, visit the famous Recycling Depot and Free Store to find out how to transform garbage day into a social outing. The focal point of Hornby Island is the large Co-op grocery store, gas station, and the adjacent Ringside Market with cafes and shops. Across the street from the Co-op are other local vendors and eateries in the new Zocalo Market. Continuing down Central Road to its end, you arrive at Ford’s Cove Marina, home to the government wharf, corner store, scuba shop, art gallery and boat rentals. Heading out to Helliwell Park, you will pass the turnoff to Boyle Point Provincial Park: this seaside park is located at the very south end of Denman. Follow the trails through old growth Douglas fir and watch for eagles and sea lions as you look over Eagle Rock and the lighthouse on Chrome Island. The view is spectacular. The park is for day use only. Fillongley Provincial Park: This 80-acre park, on the east side of Denman Island, features an unspoiled sand and shell beach and fabulous views of Texada Island and the snow capped mainland Coast Mountain range. The miles-long foreshore is backed by an impressive stand of old growth Douglas and Grand fir and red cedar trees. Follow the trail for an easy halfhour circuit or spend the day beachcombing. There are ten campsites available here and all facilities are wheelchair accessible. Bill Mee Regional Park: This park is the site of the community-built boat launch on Lambert Channel, just south of the Hornby Island ferry dock on East Road. Sandy Island Provincial Park: This marine park, located just off the northwestern tip of Denman, is only accessible by water. An ideal trip for the day or an overnight stay by canoe or kayak. Please treat it with care. It has its own distinctive ecosystem. the Seabreeze Lodge which also offers lovely meals for the public. Enjoy your stay - and be sure to come back in the off-season - the Blues Festival, the herring run, sealion migrations and many other special community events make Hornby a great place in the spring, fall and winter months too. Tribune Bay Provincial Park: This large sheltered bay boasts some of the warmest ocean water in British Columbia and one of the finest white sand beaches. The park provides a safe place for families to swim and wade in shallow water, explore tidal pools, or play on the beach when the tide is out. Dogs are not allowed on the beach. There is a day-use picnic area, but no overnight camping. If you come by boat, be advised that dumping sewage is not allowed in the Bay. The park is also the home of the Tribune Bay Outdoor Education Centre offering youth team building programs. Helliwell Provincial Park: This is a day-use only park named for the Helliwell family that originally donated the land. A five-kilometer walk circles the park along the spectacular bluffs and through the old-growth forest of huge weather-beaten firs, pines and oaks. PLEASE stay on the marked paths as foot traffic destroys the habitat for the delicate bluff-top plants and rare wildflowers adapted to this dry ecosystem. In the spring, during herring season, look out to Flora Island for a glimpse of the sea lions basking on its shore. To avoid disturbing nesting cormorants and other wildlife, please keep dogs under control at all times. These Islands are beautiful places to visit at any time of year and each season has its own offerings for visitors. In the advertising section, a coding system indicates year-round activities (Y), and seasonal activities (S). Community members are always willing to answer questions and welcome you into island activities. This pamphlet is sponsored by members of the business communities of Hornby and Denman, who extend a warm welcome to all visitors to our islands. On the Web...
