Who were the first inhabitants of the Isle
of Palms?
In the early days of the island, Indian tribes, including
the Sewee, Wando and Yemasee inhabited the
island as hunting and fishing grounds. Traders
bartered with Indians for deerskins and furs. Later,
pirates, among them the infamous Blackbeard,
sailed in the island’s waters. Many legends tell of
buried treasures and sunken ships.

Why is it called the Lowcountry?

Coastal land from here to Hilton Head Island is nearly at (and sometimes
below) sea level, but that’s not why it’s called the Lowcountry. The term
refers to the lower 1/3 of South Carolina that long ago was under water.
The upper third - or the Up Country - was the state’s original landmass.
Thousands of years later, “Lowcountry” encompasses coastal landscapes

classic, A Charlie Brown Christmas at 6

New Year’s is a time to celebrate with loved
ones, remembering the year’s milestones
and ringing in the year ahead in festive
spirit! Sip, savor and socialize with dancing

and desserts. Top it off, of course, with
a glass of bubbles during midnight’s
