Pastor Wale Akinsiku Conference Host, Making of Champions September 2011 Lives Inspired For Excellence 3 career corner The Real Reason No One Will Give You A Chance How to get a job in an industry where you do not have any experience. Peter Harris of Workopolis.com I t sounds harsh, but it is the truth: no one is going to give you a chance. It’s actually unlikely that anyone is going to give you anything. Candidates are often convinced that they could be great in a particular job for which they have little or no experience if only a potential employer would give them a chance. That may or may not be true, but we’re unlikely to find out, because employers aren’t in the business of giving people chances. In fact, giving chances is bad for business. Employers can however, take a chance on you. Actually, every time a company hires anyone, they are taking chances. They try to mitigate the risks as much as possible by surveying resumes for the most qualified people, interviewing those people to find the best fit, and then conducting background checks to check for red flags. Still, when employers sign that contract, they’re taking a gamble. Resumes can be exaggerated, people who are great in interviews aren’t always great on the job, and background screens miss things. Hiring the wrong person is messy and expensive. Demonstrate your skills and accomplishments Take a look at everything you’ve done so far, on the job, at school and in your personal life. List the accomplishments that you have made and see if you can find a way to tailor them to the industry that you’re targeting. Think about your skills that can apply across industries, such as project management, communication, research, and relationshipbuilding. Are you a skilled and effective writer or public speaker? Have you lead a successful team or taken a project from plan to fruition? Can you manage a budget or schedule multiple tasks for a team of people? All of these skills and experiences can be applicable across industries. How can you do that? The keys to landing a job in an industry where you have no experience: 4 Lives Inspired For Excellence September 2011 Do whatever you can to land an interview. When it comes, dress professionally and make the right impression. Use this occasion to demonstrate your passion for the industry, the company and the role. People like to hire those who are enthusiastic about the particulars rather that someone who’s just looking for a job. Be upbeat, positive and as charming as possible. People also want to hire someone whose company they enjoy, since once they hire you, you become a part of their daily life. Get some more experience If you really don’t have enough skills and accomplishments to land an interview, then you’re going to have to go out and get some. Look for internship opportunities, volunteer work or short-term contracts where you can pitch in on complex projects, develop your skills (espe- Can you manage a budget or schedule multiple tasks for a team of people? All of these skills and experiences can be applicable across industries. So your job as a candidate is not to get employers to give you a chance, thereby asking them to make a poor business decision as a favour to you. Your challenge is to give potential employers a reason to take that chance on you. You have to show that you have the skills, the passion and the willingness to work hard and be an asset to their team. Show passion cially the transferable ones mentioned above) and accomplish demonstrable success. You can also use these opportunities to increase your personal network. Take any job, and do it well If you’re offered any role at all - even one that is a step down from your past work or what you were hoping for - take it. It’s easier to prove your value and work your way up from the inside. Come in early, stay late. Take any opportunity to work on projects for other departments so that you can network internally and learn as much as possible about the company. Hard work, enthusiasm and a positive attitude go a long way. Everything that you do well will convince your employer that they made the right decision in taking a chance on you - and every connection and skill that you learn along the way makes getting your next, bigger and better chance easier. And you’ve earned it; nobody had to give you anything. pastor’s column houseofpraise.ca Living Life On Purpose power for the mission Acts 1:8; Micah 3:8 Step 3: Prayer In 2 kings 2:9 “And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” The above verse teaches that Elisha asked (which is another way of saying that he prayed). Notice he did not get to a place where he was requested to ask until he had crossed over or proven his unquestionable commitment. Elisha was very clear and specific in his request. You will also need to be very clear and specific in your request. Step 4: Watch Closely Before Elisha could receive power for his mission he was required to watch Elijah closely to make sure he saw him as he was being taken away. “So he said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.” Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it…” (2 kings 2:10-12). This means that you and I must also watch Jesus closely through His Word. Jesus says “If ‘Living Life On Purpose’ is a book that was written by Pastor Wale Akinsiku and first published in 2003. Last month we looked at the first two steps in receiving power for the mission; acknowledge your need for it and be committed to God. In this edition, we will look at the final two steps to receiving the power and the action required to turn the power into tangible results. Enjoy! you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed.” (John 8:31) Elisha watched his master - Elijah closely, you and I must also watch our master- Jesus closely. We must continually look unto Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith. As you study the scriptures diligently, you are “watching” to “see”. Now the whole scriptures talk about Jesus, hence to receive power for your mission you need to give yourself to a diligent study of the Word to show yourself approved of God. As you do this, every revelation of the truth you come across empowers you to be productive in your pursuit. What are you waiting for? Action is required to convert power to tangible results. Now that you have been empowered by God, you need to take action immediately. Don’t wait anymore. The time for waiting has come to an end; this is the season for action. Action is required to convert the power you have just received into tangible results! It is now your responsibility to move forward. God has now fulfilled His part by empowering you; it’s time for you to act. “He also took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan. Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, “Where is the LORD God of Elijah?” And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over.” (2 Kings 2:13-14). Elisha knew it was now time to act. He immediately went towards the Jordan River (which was an obstacle in the pursuit of his mission) and he struck the river. The result was immediate, the river was divided and he crossed over. You will also cross over to productivity. Remember that it is impossible for you to fail as you pursue your mission. The same obstacle that looked impossible a few minutes ago, can now easily give way because of the power of God at work in you now. So arise! Stand to your feet like a champion; start taking the necessary actions towards achieving your goals. You are about to experience a level of results that cannot be ignored! pastor wale akinsiku living September 2011 Lives Inspired For Excellence 5 hop contributor’s poem All To You In everything, I give thanks to Thee For the overwhelming abundance and the countless plenty, For the endless shower of Your multitude To the uncontainable You, eternity holds my gratitude Thank You for giving me only what’s best In spite of myself and my prayer request Thank You for the ungranted ones when they’re not good for me And when they are, thank You for the difficulty When I pray, I may not really know That with what I want, I may not really grow Not everything I ask is good for me And if I’m stubborn, I’d find out consequently In everything, there is a perfect time, A reason, a purpose, and a divine design Within my capacity and limitations I am given to do But the rest in Your hands will smoothly pursue The storms and the bumps that there have been Great things borne of these, I have seen The lows and the highs, I need the same For myself and my life, to ignite and tame For through the fears and the pain That push me and make me, there’s joy and gain In grief and in sorrow I stand to conquer, learn, and grow! No. Hollywood movies? No. These are the titles of just some of the powerful messages that were preached during Making of Champions 2010. With world renowned speakers, respected leaders, leading mentors, best-selling authors and motivational speakers, Making of Champions 2010 was a conference to remember. It was not just about the people who attended, the songs that were sang; it was about the souls saved and empowerment to go out and obtain your harvest because the theme was ‘It’s Harvest Time’. Here are some highlights: Dr. Mensa Otabil To kick off the conference, Dr. Mensa Otabil shared precious revelations on ‘Maximizing the Harvest’ and ‘Unlocking the Champions Code’. In week two, Dr. Eastwood Anaba taught the ‘Secret Principles of Love’. Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, in week three, revealed to us the ‘WealthCreating Lifestyle’ and in week four Rev. Sam Adeyemi instilled in us the ‘True Value of Leadership’ using the story of Joseph leading Egypt in a time of famine. B.O.UQ.U.I Dr. Mensa Otabil WEEK 1 Highlights: Text: Revelations 5:1-9 Overview • There is a mystery of greatness we have to unlock. Champions are people who identify causes and fight for what they believe in. They conquer! • This passage talks about a scroll which represents revelation of future events and future glory. • The scroll is one but the seals are seven. God is the one that gives the scroll out to the right people. • Only prepared people can have access to God’s prepared program 8 Lives Inspired For Excellence September 2011 houseofpraise.ca HIGHLIGHTS t time! Dr. Eastwood Anaba WEEK 2 Highlights: Text: Isaiah 53:1 Overview • Love encompasses two concepts – Exchange and substitution. We see this perfectly displayed in Jesus as he exchanged his life for our sins and substituted his death for our opportunity to live. Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo WEEK 3 Highlights: Text: Mark 11:1-9 Overview • Destiny is an abbreviation for destination • For many people, destiny is tied up like that of the donkey in the text • However, in God, there is certain deliverance. Rev. Sam Adeyemi B.O.U.Q.U.I Week 4 Highlights: Text: Genesis 42 Overview • The story of Joseph shows an accurate description of the benefits of resource management and leadership as Joseph leads Egypt in the time of famine. • The value you place on the Word determines the reward to be received. Making of Champions 2010 was full of awesome revelations and unique insights. Imagine if just these few titles and highlights were formed into a movie script, then it would break every box office record there was and if it were a famous song then it would top every music chart in existence. Since it was a message of hope, inspiration, empowerment, encouragement then it was for a fact a truly life-changing event. September 2011 Lives Inspired For Excellence 9 healthy liiving How To Prevent Mental Illness W orldwide, about 450 million people suffer from mental and behavioral disorders and about one in four people are likely to develop one of these disorders in their lifetime. Of the top ten causes of disability and premature death worldwide, five are psychiatric conditions. Mental illness, in addition to the social and economic burden it places on the family, increases the risk of physical illness. The relationship between physical and mental illness is reciprocal, since the presence of physical illness also places one at risk of mental illness. With the growing evidence of treatments that are available for mental illness, there are a number of options to help relieve the suffering. However, given the limitations in the effectiveness of the treatments, the best method for reducing the burden is prevention. Just as there is a lot of emphasis on reducing the risk of different physical illnesses such as lung disease and AIDS using preventative strategies, the same is true of mental illnesses. There is no doubt that the government has a significant role to play in mounting public awareness campaigns and educating people to help reduce the stigma of mental illness. We know that the stigma associated with mental illness is a major obstacle to people accessing the care that they need. The government has done so with some measure of success with anti-smoking campaigns. In addition to the role of the government, there are steps that individuals can take to reduce the risk and burden of mental illness on themselves and their families. Using the same guiding principles of preventative medicine, one has to identify the risk factors and minimize those, while identifying the protective factors and enhancing them. There are some risk factors that cannot be modified and some protective factors or strategies that are impractical. One must do what one can within the limits of their capacity. Preventative strategies aim to counteract the risk factors and reinforce the protective factors so that the processes that contribute to mental Having a risk factor does not predict that one will have a mental illness. This is because of protective factors. illness can be ameliorated. The more influence that individuals have on their mental health and the development of mental illness, the greater the positive effect that is to be expected when they are addressed successfully. Risk factors include stressful life events, reading disabilities, personal loss (bereavement), parent mental illness, family conflict or disorganization, exposure to aggression and Protective Factors Ability to adapt to changing circumstances, regular exercise, good parenting, healthy selfesteem, social support, ability to cope with stress, good social skills, optimism Risk Factors Most common obstacles to people accessing psychiatric care 10 Lives Inspired For Excellence September 2011 stressful life events, reading disabilities, personal loss (bereavement), parent mental illness, family conflict, exposure to aggression and violence, early pregnancy, excessive drug abuse, chronic pain, chronic insomnia, academic failure, history of child abuse or neglect. violence. Others include early pregnancy, excessive drug abuse, chronic pain, chronic insomnia academic failure and a history of child abuse and or neglect. Lack of education, transportation and housing, peer rejection, poor nutrition, poverty, racial injustice, work stress and unemployment, neighborhood disorganization and discrimination also play a significant role. This list is not exhaustive but includes the major identified risk factors. The most important thing to note here is that having a RISK factor DOES NOT PREDICT that one will have a mental illness. This is because of PROTECTIVE factors. The following are factors that help protect an individual from developing mental illness in spite of risk; Ones ability to adapt to changing circumstances, regular exercise and the feeling of mastery and control of skills learned either in an academic or vocational setting. The experience of good parenting is a key determinant and so parents need to be aware of the role they play in this as they raise their children. Literacy is important, not so much the extent of education, as the accumulation of degrees in itself is not protective but as a means of appreciating one’s environment and communicating effectively. A healthy self-esteem serves a major role as this creates the framework through which challenges are viewed and one’s ability to handle them. In addition to self-esteem, one’s social support of family and friends plays an important role. An individual who has a greater ability to cope with stress and face adversity is more protected especially if they have good social and conflict management skills. Smiling and having a positive outlook is an effective, affordable and relatively simple way to give yourself a boost, think of it as your vaccination. Low Cost business ideas: So you’d like to open your own business but with limited finances, you want to focus on low cost business opportunities. Well, you’re not alone. Most of us have bigger business ideas than our bankroll will support but that still doesn’t stop us from pursuing our dreams. Many new businesses owners have had to invest more sweat equity than financial equity to get their small business ideas off the ground. A number of successful startups, like Apple, Mary Kay Cosmetics and Hershey Chocolate, even initially operated their business in their garages. In fact, a home business opportunity is one of the primary ways small business owners get started. By operating out of your home, you can not only save on office rent expenses but you will often be able to deduct part of your rent or mortgage as a small business home office deduction. The low cost business opportunities that we primarily focus on are those that you can start with a relatively small amount of capital and your longer term operating expenses are also reasonable. Keep in mind, however, that with low cost business ideas also often comes higher competition and last month we looked at the challenges of starting a small business on a budget. In this edition of L.I.F.E. we will highlight LOW COST MARKETING, is it needed? Absolutely! After you’ve made sure you have the essential equipment, the next smart place to invest is in your marketing. When you are trying to keep costs down, you may be tempted to hold off on marketing—but don’t. Marketing is necessary for growing your business. In this edition of L.I.F.E. we introduce the first step to real estate investing www.therealestaterenegades.com Why Are You Going to Begin Real Estate Investing? Usually you’re so excited at the thought of making “Donald Trump like money” that you may not sit down and actually make it clear why you are investing in real estate. Even “The Donald” has his reasons and so should you. And by deciding why you are investing right up front, it will help guide your education and your decision making. • Are you interested in monthly “cash flow”? • Are you looking for a big pay day after a few months? A few years? • Are you looking to build an asset base that creates passive income for you while you’re sipping cold drinks on the beach? • Are you looking for “hands off” investing or “active” investing? Be sure to keep this in mind while you go through the rest of the real estate investing guide. Step #1: Education, Get Some! Now this first step is where most people immediately go off in the wrong direction. There are HUGE differences in the types and level of real estate investing training available. You really want to work by referral. Begin asking people who are successful investors how they started, what real estate education they used, what real estate books they read, what mentors they had. 14 Lives Inspired For Excellence September 2011 Ask them this, “Is anyone DOING any investing who takes the training they are recommending?” I often see people spend more time talking about investing and more time posting about investing in discussion forums than actually DOING anything. So when you ask around, look for an active group that is actually doing real world investing and not just sitting in a class or banquet hall all day. A mistake made by most is asking your neighbor or cousin or father-in-law about investing. Unless one of these people is successfully doing be extremely difficult to have a realtor work with you like this). Impossible? No. Difficult? Yes! OR B. Write a lot of offers on homes yourself. Now to do this you really need to get some detailed advice on what clauses to use in your offers and exactly what type of offers to write. You may want to negotiate an “option” on a property instead of buying it outright. Regardless, before writing any offer on a property yourself, you will want to know what “comparable” properties in the area sold for recently. This way you understand the local A mistake made by most is asking your neighbor or cousin or father-in-law about investing. Unless one of these people is successfully doing it, be very careful in taking their advice. it, be very careful in taking their advice. Many, MANY, people make the mistake of taking advice from people that have no business in giving it. Don’t let that be you. “Flipping” is Very Different from “Investing” in Real Estate There is a huge difference in Real Estate “Flipping” or “Rehabbing” and “Investing”. Flipping a house (or Rehabbing a house) like you see on the many A&E TV shows looks exciting, but there are more than a few dangers to this approach. To “flip” a house you typically need to buy it well below market value. This can be extremely difficult to do consistently. Trying to find a property that you can lock up substantially below market value will take a great deal of effort. You will need to either: A. Find a realtor willing to make a lot of offers on your behalf. (Understand that realtors work with other realtors. It’s a network. If they submit 100 low ball offers on houses for you they run the risk of upsetting the network that they depend on to make a living. So it can market. Writing offers on many properties will be necessary to find someone willing to sell you their property for well below market value. And to make money on a property you must purchase it for substantially less than market value. Even if the property is in good condition and requires little or no work, you have expenses that quickly chew up any potential profits. Things like advertising, real estate commissions (if you use a realtor to sell the property after you buy it), legal costs on closing, land transfer taxes, and taxes on your profits will eat into your margins extremely quickly. My contract with my now, former employer ended Friday May 13, 2011. On Sunday May 15 I stayed for the prayer session for people who are in-between contracts and are looking for a new opportunity.
