There are over 7,000 guests per show, and with the help of volunteers from the Harrah’s and Harveys employee pool, it’s always a big success for the biggest entertainment town in the world. Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago created a fun party for all ages. The two bands opened the show playing songs together, and then each played their set, followed by them playing together again with all their classic hits. To hear original members Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson from EWF, and James Pankow, Walter Parazider, Bill Champlin and Robert Lamm from Chicago, with all their bandmates playing together, was a beautiful mix of instruments and voices that blended so cool together – what a treat! They were hit makers in the 70s and 80s, and Tahoe received a jukebox filled with their classics to enjoy. Legends Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan also performed at the outdoor venue. Willie, at 76 years old, is amazing – what an American icon! With his guitar with a hold in it – and he likes it that way – Nelson sang his classics with a tight little band. I met him around ten years ago for photos, and he’s just the nicest person! Willie even recorded a record inside Harrah’s Showroom in the 70s. Dylan had a hot band, and it was cool to hear him play Elvis Presley’s classic, “Heartbreak Hotel.” Dylan doesn’t like to have his photo taken – but what a body of work and influences he has had with artists over the years. The party continues outdoors at Harveys with Chickenfoot, Sept. 5. This new super-group with Sammy Hagar on vocals, Joe Satriani on lead guitar, Michael Anthony from Van Halen on bass, and Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, on drums, will crank it up with some good ol’ Rock ‘n’ Roll. They just put out a CD and have been touring. We’re lucky once again to have this in our backyard. Don’t miss this Tahoe party! Harveys also has The Improv with host Howie Nave from KRLT 93.9, and new comics each week to laugh with. The Hard Rock is always a good time for food and drinks. Jesse’s Cool Black Kettle plays classic Rock on Fridays and Saturdays at the Tahoe Live Stage, and you can eat at the Hard Rock out front while you listen. Horizon has Carnival Cabaret, the very popular and unique show that tourists and locals alike really enjoy. It’s men impersonating Cher, Dolly, Bette, Liza, Reba and more. Mix humor with the star and host James “Gypsy” Haake, and it’s a fun time. Haake’s been in many movies and TV shows. At 77, his humor has never been better. That, mixed with all the cool music and dancers, makes for a good time. Check it out yourself. Opal Ultra Lounge inside MontBleu is a great club with cool DJ music, live music, drink specials (like Dollar Drinks on Thursdays, and Ladies Drink for Free on Fridays), the hot lingerie show on Wednesdays where the sexy ladies put on many sexy lingerie outfits (a real crowd pleaser), and Two Dollar Well Drinks. Get some big smiles and check it out! BLU Nightclub is open on Fridays and Saturdays, and you can see Bobby bodypaint the girls – wow! Harrah’s has Blues Traveler, Sept. 12. John Popper on harmonica, vocals and guitar is a real treat – what a sound they make! Sept. 19 is the Robert Cray Band with classic Blues and so much more you’ll like. Sept. 26 is Merle Haggard with Country music that goes way back. Oct. 3 Tommy Castro Band appears with many talented artists playing Rhythm & Blues, always a good time. Oct. 10 is Kenny Wayne Shepherd – what a talent! Greg London’s “Iconman” put on an impressive show that mixed a ton of impressions with music that included everyone from Ozzie Ozborn to Sammy Davis, Jr. He plays Reno Harrah’s all the time. VEX Nightclub on Friday and Saturday nights is packed with fun and sexy Go-Go Girls. Cabo Wabo at Harveys, with live music and DJs, is always a good time. Clint, from Brothers Bar & Grill, had a fun Grand Reopening Party. They have great food and drink specials. They will host once again the 19th Annual Lake Tahoe Toy Run, Oct. 3. Proceeds benefit Christmas Cheer. Fox & Hound had a cool benefit for the American Cancer Society with music by Deep Fryed Mojo. Bar 24 Taproom and Grill, inside Bill’s, has a lot of very happening live music that Late Nite Billy brings in to enjoy. Outdoor music at The Beacon mixed with Rum Runners and food is always a Tahoe treat. Zephyr Cove Resort has their Sunset Bar, boat cruises, volleyball, and so much more to enjoy. Tahoe favorite G Love & Special Sauce will be at the Crystal Bay Casino, Sept. 9-10. And remember, catch all the summer action now. Have fun – you’re in Tahoe! Doesn’t seem like it ever had a chance to get started. We had a lot of isolated thunderstorms and at times I thought I was in Miami and not the lake. Wait. Those weren’t thunderstorms but rather naysayers at a town hall meeting on Health Care Reform. Hey before you start showing your true political party colors (which is usually gray) at least take a moment and try to put yourself there and see how you would react. I know we need some affordable health insurance but when the big corporations are asking, “Well where’s the profit in that?” I think we need to come up with something if anything because those who are now paying in to Social Security will probably start protesting just before the system runs dry just before they get an opportunity to use it for themselves. Maybe we can buy out old people to not get health care. You know sort of like a golden handshake as an incentive to get someone top retire early so that the system can save some money. And what a great opportunity too reducing one’s carbon footprint at the same time so in essence another way to protect the system as well as the planet. We could reinstate the abandoned Cash for Clunkers program but use it instead now on people. I’m sure there’s a time limit when pacemakers will run out but by then it would be too late. Cash in now I say. Call your Congressman and tell him or her what you think. Do it for the children. Speaking of clunkers (ouch) Dennis Blair returns to the lake for the first time this year. His act combines music, standup and topical observations. He’s performed virtually everywhere coast to coast including comedy clubs, corporate venues, cruise ships and concert halls. He’s been on The Tonight Show, HBO and cohosted the Stephanie Miller Radio Show with comedic legend Elayne Boosler. Dennis has appeared with everybody is seems ranging from musical artists such as The Beach Boys, Tom Jones and Gloria Estefan to comedic legends such as Joan Rivers, Jackie Mason and the late great Rodney Dangerfield. In fact it was Dangerfield who really gave him his start taking him in as his protégé and together they toured the United States and Canada for over three years. Dennis conceived and co-wrote Rodney’s hit movie, “Easy Money” and also played two cameo roles. He co-wrote and was a featured actor in two Dangerfield specials on ABC and was creative consultant for the album “Rappin’ Rodney”. The title song (which he cowrote) was nominated for a Grammy Award. He wrote and performed the song “Ordinary Man” which appears on the “Easy Money” soundtrack album. And he won the “Charlie” (Chaplin) Award for “Best Comedian in New York.” Appearing with Dennis is firsttimer-to-the-lake Hiram Kasten. Can’t wait to see his act he started way back when Seinfeld was working the road and Ray Romano was his opening act! More on Hiram on my radio show when he arrives which by the way is September 9th through the 13th. Anthony Griffith is also one who hasn’t been up here in a very long time. He truly is a gem of a person and even back in the 90s when I first met him I knew we would remain good friends through just about anything. He’s a very unique individual with a skewed look at the world we live in. Even his childhood was laying the groundwork for what would be a life of stand up. “Kids in my neighborhood loved playing cops and robbers which I hated because I was always forced to be the prostitute.” Anthony was reared by a very religious mother which is probably one reason his humor has always been nonoffensive and filled with many different characters growing up. His observational style on virtually everything around him is sometimes brilliant. On living in Hollywood Grif says, “I saw a dog wearing a sweater and matching cap... I was wearing that same outfit.” He’s one of the funniest gentlemen comics I’m aware of and quite dry I might add. He’s been described as hilarious, unique, original, intense and witty. “Inquisitive as a child, observing people has always been second nature to me. Three occupations I observed, if done correctly always had audiences mesmerized-the athlete, the singer and the comedian. Never one to hold a note, outside the shower and with my aspirations to become a professional dodge baller ending after grade school, my gift I discovered, actually stumbled onto, was comedy” says Grif. One thing about Anthony that is so moving is that he shares with the audience his diagnosis with Multiple sclerosis (MS) and how his relationship with God has helped him throughout not to mention a terrific relationship with his wife. Oh yeah did I mention that he is also one of the funniest guys out there? Performing with Grif is yet another first-timer-tothe-lake by the name of Jann Karam. In addition to being a very funny last she’s also an actress and writer whose numerous T.V. credits include stand-up appearances on Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show and HBO’s Young Comedians Show. She played one of Jerry’s girlfriend’s on Seinfeld (The Switch) and wrote, directed and starred in festival-award winning film, Under the Big Muu-Muu, a funny, touching look at mother-daughter relationships. She performs her one-woman show Reclining Nude on La Cienega in Los Angeles and around the country. In addition, she’s written a book based on the show-a humorous collection of short stories about life, love and finding a place to lie down. Wow what a week. See both Grif and Jann Sept.16th through the 20th. Returning once again are a few favorites including Steve White with Scott Kennedy September 23rd through the 27th and John Caponera with the Jewel of the Sierra (from Gardnerville) Kat Simmons September 30th through October 4th. Howie Nave is the host/emcee/manager of The Improv @ Harveys every Tuesday through Sunday. www.Howienave.com and make sure you check him out on Facebook too. The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by Fly Fishing My favorite time of the year! Kids are back in school, the weather is wonderful and the fishing really turns on with big bugs and of course a few small ones as well! Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the families the Summers bring but the un-crowded rivers in the Fall are fantastic! We still have some great opportunities in September for the local kids to do some fishing here in the basin. September 7th is LCT day at Sawmill Pond and September 20th is the Moose Lodges “Kids Fishing Derby” at Baron Lake! The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Celebration at Sawmill Pond will be an event not to be missed! This event will be a community event and everyone is welcome to attend. Kids under 15 years old are the only ones allowed to fish but there will be all kinds of activities being offered for all ages including some fly fishing instruction, information about the LCT, live music, food and games for the kids. US Fish & Wildlife Service will have a tank with LCT in it so people can see the species of trout that used to be the only species of trout in our watershed. They are also stocking 1000 LCT for the kids to catch which is the first time there will have been Cutthroat Trout stocked in Sawmill pond! This should be a wonderful event and please remember that this event is for kids as well as adults but the kids are the only ones allowed to fish. The 8th annual South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kids Fishing Derby will be held at the Tahoe Paradise Park’s Baron Lake and is free for kids of all ages! This is a great event for the kids with numerous prizes, food for all and a bunch of fish for the kids to catch! Some equipment will be provided for the kids to use as well as bait and tackle. This event gets pretty crowded so get there early and find a good spot! All of the kids fishing events including the Sawmill Pond fishing derby in June are run with donations from service clubs, non-profit organizations and local community members. Please consider donating to these events and or if you know of any other groups that donate to kids events please let me know! If we don’t have fish for the kids we can’t keep the kids fishing and fishing is a great outdoor activity and one that has been in our families for generations! Please donate to one of these causes! Now for the best fishing spots in September... The East Carson & West Carson Rivers are on fire and should stay that way into the Winter months! Fish below Hangman’s with Big Hoppers and small droppers as well as Tricos... Heenan opens September 4th, Caples is chalked full of fish (walk the shoreline and look for cruisers), Indian Creek Reservoir is and will be great, the East and West Walker Rivers are in great shape and last but not least Victor Babbit give Red Lake a try! These are just a few of the fisheries we access this time of year and if you have questions on these or any others in our area, just give us a call or stop by the shop located at 2705 Lake Tahoe blvd. next to Midas Mufflers and about 3.5 miles from the Casinos. Our phone number is 530-541-8208. We have full guide services available for all angler levels, specializing in teaching the art of fly fishing. Thanks for reading and the best fishing of the year is just around the corner! The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by Another Late Night with LateNiteBilly “New York, New York. Big city of dreams, but everything in New York ain’t always what it seems.” DJ AM’s last tweet on Twitter.com before he was found dead in his home of an apparent drug overdose in New York just several hours ago before I write this. RIP brotha. It was just two months ago that I was sitting down to write my Article here for Lake Tahoe’s Entertainer Magazine when I learned of Michael Jacksons death. It inspired my writing then as will the untimely death of DJ AM tonight. On a bright note, I can confidently say that EVERY party goer in the World is in for a treat tonight as EVERY DJ across the Globe is about to throw down their most memorable set ever in Tribute. When I am done writing I will head down to VEX to hear DJ Brian Rockwell do his part to show his love for such an amazing and inspirational DJ. DJ AM graced the stage of Altitude Nightclub (now VEX) several times over the years and truly loved Tahoe. Now in recent time I have been battling with something myself. I am a (recovering) addict and alcoholic. I am not ashamed of this and have often gone public about it when talking to the press about my career. I have been clean and sober now for over five years and yet work in Bars and Nightclubs seven days and nights a week. I can attest first hand that a career in the Entertainment Industry is a testing one but I have managed very well. It takes a lot of strength and courage to do what I do. When I first got sober, I thought it was important to share my experience publicly as to help others out there that still suffer and give them the courage to get help. Last week I was interviewed for five hours at my home for an Article for www. SouthLakeTahoe.com (you can find the Article there) and again I was open about my addiction and my past in association with my career in the Entertainment Industry. When I read the finished version I had to wonder if talking about my demons and my past really did me justice five years later? I have accomplished SO much in sobriety that I wondered if I was just making myself look bad when I had a chance to shine with my accomplishments? Today I have NO regrets. Press says that DJ AM was found next to a crack pipe and empty prescription bottles. This is someone that was paid $25,000 per night to DJ the most exclusive Clubs in the World alongside the biggest Celebrities in the Industry but was found dead at 36 years old. If I can do what I do clean and sober, speak about it loudly and help or inspire even one more person than I already have, I want to be heard loud and clear! I’ve knocked on Heavens door many times and unless I clearly remember where I came from I will be knocking again but all too untimely. Again, RIP Adam Goldstein aka DJ AM. One Love. The Entertainment Industry has no shortage of people with a colorful past and Mickey Avalon is a prime example. With a childhood rough enough to guarantee him rock star success, by the time he was out of his teenage years -- at least according to the few details he’s given -- Mickey Avalon had sold pot (with his mother), been addicted to heroin and dope, worked as a graffiti artist in L.A., converted to Orthodox Judaism (his parents were both non-practicing Jews, and his paternal grandparents were survivors of Auschwitz), got married and had a daughter, prostituted himself for drug money, watched his father die, and found his sister’s dead body. All of this gave ample material for his rhymes, which he started writing after his pal, the former MTV VJ Simon Rex, encouraged him to compose his own songs. Avalon, Rex (who rapped under the name Dirt Nasty), and Armen Melik (aka Andre Legacy) began recording and releasing their own material as the Dyslexic Speedreaders, an irreverent group that gave a satirical and often lascivious look into the L.A. club and drug culture. Avalon’s stage presence, which mixed a kind of hyper- and often ambiguous sexuality akin to the trashy glam rockers of the ‘70s, gained the attention of DJ and aspiring manager Kev-E-Kev (also managed DJ AM), who was soon helping Avalon hawk his self-titled CD -- wrapped in a newspaper advertising adult services -- on the streets. His music, in particular the song “Jane Fonda,” thanks to its appearance in the HBO series Entourage as well its availability on his MySpace site, started gaining an audience, and in 2006 his album was reissued as the first release from MySpace Records in joint collaboration with Interscope Records. Catch him live with Smoov-e and DJ Jazzy Gems on Sunday, September 6th at Bar 24. Next up, Saturday, September 12th Late-Nite Productions will host our first ever “Blacklight Party” featuring DJ Donald Glaude. Confident. Exuberant. Raw. Innovative. These are just a few of the words industry insiders and fans have used to describe the talent behind one of America’s favorite house DJs, Donald Glaude. Ranked 68 on DJMag’s Top 100 DJs List in 2005, Donald skyrocketed to 48 this year and his genius keeps on growing. Reno’s best, FM Marc and XM Fredie (Hi’R Entertainment / Volume Control) and Planet DJ’s Eric J will get the party started. Come dressed to impress in your finest white attire as we transform the club to stimutate your mind and soul with the James Brown of DJs. Till next month Lake tahoe, Keep the Vibe Alive. ~LateNiteBilly The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by Carnival Cabaret Celebrates 1st Anniversary Labor Day Weekend One of the saddest days of my life was when my show, Carnival Cabaret, left Lake Tahoe in January of 2004. We had the longest running show in the history of the city. I never understood why the show had to end at the Horizon. Flash forward to the beginning of 2008: I am contacted about bringing Carnival Cabaret back to the Horizon by then general manager, Steve Loyd. I was ecstatic that Carnival Cabaret would be coming home to the Horizon. I have a real passion for female impersonator shows. I’ve been involved in producing these shows since 1990 when I was making my living as a George Michael impersonator. For me, it’s the greatest job in the world! During our absence from Lake Tahoe, not a day went by without people asking where the show went and when it would be coming back. Carnival Cabaret is a show that people keep coming back to time and time again. It’s a light-hearted, funny, exhilarating and captivating experience that takes the audience away from their everyday lives. James (Gypsy) Haake, Carnival Cabaret’s master of ceremonies, is a 77 year old actor who was discovered by Mel Brooks in the early 1980s in a Beverly Hills night spot called “La Cage Aux Folles.” La Cage was the first of several cabarets that opened around the world inspired by the award-winning movie of the same name. With his sharp sense of humor, masterful timing and outrageous gowns, Mr. Haake has been a key figure in the success of the show. He is the heart and soul of Carnival Cabaret. The show is now celebrating its first anniversary on Labor Day Weekend and I couldn’t be happier. We returned with a twelve week contract and now the Horizon has asked us to stay on permanently. We are the only ongoing female impersonator production in the country appearing in a casino. We’re happy to be home! I love Lake Tahoe. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. and I wouldn’t have a show any other place. Thank you, Lake Tahoe, for your support. I look forward to making history again. Dan - Producer Carnival Cabaret currently has four cast members who bring to life Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, Cher, Marilyn Monroe and Celine Dion. The show is the only show in Lake Tahoe that runs SEVEN days a week, with one show nightly at 8pm. The Carnival Cabaret box office opens daily at 2 pm. Please call (800) 683-8266 for tickets and more information. (James Haake is off on Friday evenings, Patrick Ross is your host on Fridays) The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by Two Time Grammy Nominated Rap Artist SKEE-LO at Whiskey Dicks Where do you want to be on September 19th? Thats right folks, Domantay Sports & Entertainment presents legendary solo rap artist SKEE-LO to perform for one night only at Whiskey Dicks Saloon in So. Lake Tahoe. SKEE-LO has had two Grammy Nominations: “Best Solo Rap Performance” and “Best Rap Album.” Three Billboard Video Award Nominations: “Best New Artist,” “Best Clip of the Year,” and “Maximum Vision Clip of the Year.” SKEE-LO was born in Chicago’s (south side) IL, and moved to New York City in the late 70’s. He was influenced by artist such as: KRS-1, L.L. Cool J, Rakim, and Kurtis Blow; admiring their styles & technique. SKEE-LO moved to Los Angeles CA, in the mid 80’s. His “I Wish” single, with a video that parodied Forrest Gump, became a huge hit on radio and MTV during the summer of 1995, and his identically titled debut album was released shortly thereafter earning him 2 Grammy nominations for both album & single. Today, after being several years “M.I.A”., SKEE- LO resurfaces with a new exciting album titled: “Overdose.” This project is more like SKEE-LO (Moch-3)! A mature sound from an evolved artist, an all star cast of producers & special features, toppled with the unique style of SKEE-LO’s song-writing. The album is said not to be the return of SKEELO, but rather the start of “SKEE-LO MUSIK” the Record label; with more artist/groups of all genres to follow. Check out his new sound at myspace. com/skeelomusic. Performing with him is BonusTraxx out of Ripon California and local favorites Outta Control better known as O.C.T. who is now tearing it up in San Diego California.
