The Theater Experience
THE FOLLOWING IS AN OVERVIEW OF OUR UPCOMING THEATER SCHEDULE. This calendar will be added to
regularly. Please watch your mail for our invitations. We look forward to seeing you at the theater!
Project SUCCESS is a youth-development organization that works with students over a
six-year period, from middle school through high school, to help them develop life skills and inspire
them to act on their dreams. Through in-school goal-setting workshops, an innovative theater
program, and after-school individual services, students learn to make informed choices and plan
for meaningful futures.
RESERVING TICKETS: For each play offered, you will receive a formal invitation sent by mail. Each student/family may
receive up to 4 FREE TICKETS and each school staff member may receive up to 2 FREE TICKETS. To reserve tickets to a
performance, please call us at 612-874-7710. Tickets are provided through our theater partners’ education funds and
sponsored by our generous supporters.
TRANSPORTATION AND CHILDCARE: We are able to provide transportation and childcare for those who need it and
chaperones for those students not accompanied by an adult. If you are in need of transportation or childcare, please let us
know when you reserve your tickets. Also, if you have transportation and would like to help by driving another family, please
let us know when you reserve your tickets.

Our staff is always happy to hear
your questions/concerns/praise/
or whatever else you’d like to tell us!
Feel free to contact us via email,
or to call us at 612.874.7710.
Happy New Year!
Greetings! As another year passes, we at Project
SUCCESS are ever grateful for the privilege of working
with so many amazing young people, schools, families,
theaters and supporters every day. Our mission is
simple and clear: we strive to inspire young people to
believe in the possibilities of their lives and to take
action toward making their dreams come true.
We believe this mission is needed now perhaps
more than ever. In this time of much concern regarding the economy and the general state of the world,
Project SUCCESS is fully committed to spreading a
message of hope and perseverance every day. Times
have been hard in the world before, and we only need
to look toward the heroes of yesterday to be inspired
today. Remarkable people like Rosa Parks, Mahatma
Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Wilma Rudolph, Martin
Luther King Jr. and countless others who didn’t let
hard times get in the way of persevering toward their
dreams and a brighter future for all. And there aren’t
just heroes from yesterday — there are heroes walking
among us today. There are countless people who are
creating positive change in the world in big and small
ways every day. They are all over the world, all across
our nation, our state, our community — and they are
most certainly walking the halls of the Minneapolis
Public Schools.
In the spirit of the New Year, may we all give thanks
for what we do have and remain steadfastly committed
to creating bright, positive futures for all.
Thank you for the part you play. Here’s to an
inspiring 2009!
Sincerely,
Adrienne Diercks

2008 CHICAGO COLLEGE TOUR BIGGEST EVER!
Over MEA weekend in October, Project SUCCESS took 78 students from North, South, and Southwest
High Schools to Chicago to check out the outstanding colleges and universities in the area. We were
also able to enjoy the side-splitting comedy at Chicago’s most famous comedy club, The Second City,
and check out the awesome sights at Millennium Park. A good time was had by all!
If you missed our Chicago trip this year – don’t worry. We take students to Chicago every year in
October. Applications are always available when school starts in September each year.
UPCOMING COLLEGE TOURS: Offering students the opportunity to visit a variety of colleges,
both in Minnesota and out-of-state, Project SUCCESS college tours are both fun and informative! We
have found that visiting a college campus in person gives students an invaluable insight as to
whether or not that school is a good fit for them.
COLLEGE TOUR SCHEDULE FOR JANUARY – MAY 2009
IN-STATE TOURS FOR NORTH, SOUTH, AND SOUTHWEST
Project SUCCESS HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
We realize the teenage years are critical ones for
every young person. That is why our program is
designed to serve each student for up to seven years —
from middle school through high school. The program
is comprised of these components: Goal-Setting
Workshops in the Classroom, Theater Experiences,
and Special Programming. All components work
within the Project SUCCESS philosophy, which is to
provide a non-judgmental, supportive setting where
students can speak out and be heard, and where they
learn to assess themselves and their options regarding
their future. All program components are designed to
help students gain confidence in creative thinking,
decision making, goal setting and resourcefulness
while developing the skills to plan their future.
GOAL-SETTING WORKSHOPS: Our staff of professional
facilitators lead workshops based on specificallydesigned curricula developed for each grade level.
Last year, we delivered 1,686 workshops to more than
6,600 young people in eleven Minneapolis/St. Paul
middle and high schools. Working together with
teachers and school administrators, our curriculum
has become an integral part of English/Language
Arts classes, ensuring that our program reaches each
child in every school. Students participate in a
workshop once a month for a total of eight workshop
experiences per student, per year. The curriculum
guides young people through a variety of unique
exercises, experiences and discussions to help them
look at their interests, their strengths and desires for
the future. We then work with them to set specific
goals and take particular steps toward those goals.
We call this process “dreaming with your eyes open,”
and 90% of participating students report taking a
positive step toward achieving their goals.
THEATER EXPERIENCES: We believe in the power of
theater to illuminate the world. We use professional
theater as a springboard to inspire students and to
help them look at the real issues they face. With the
help of our 27 professional theater partners, we offer
students and their families the opportunity to attend
between six and twelve theater experiences a year.
These are not school field trips, but tickets to evening
and weekend performances. We work with theaters to
choose the appropriate plays; we coordinate every
element of the experience including providing transportation and childcare, and often facilitate post-play
discussions with the performers and directors.
SPECIAL PROGRAMMING: High school students need
attention and assistance planning for their future. So
we offer one-on-one guidance in after-school sessions.
Our facilitators help students with reviewing and
filling out applications for college or financial aid,
finding job opportunities and seeking the resources
necessary to make life after high school a positive,
productive experience. State and national college tours
are an important part of this one-on-one assistance.
In the 2007-2008 school year, Project SUCCESS staff
took high school students on college tours in
Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Georgia.
Other specialized programming we offer includes 1)
Project SUCCESS-produced musicals and performances;
2) summer trips to the BWCA; and 3) all-school field
trips to the theater.

authors about their writings, influences and what inspires
them as an author. On April 21, Talking Volumes welcomes

2008-09 SCHOOL YEAR
HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR
Ryan Sarafolean
The first few months of the school year have been busy and
incredibly inspiring. In November, Project SUCCESS brought a
Mixed Blood Theatre touring production to Southwest High
School. The show, Deaf Duckling, is about a deaf student who
struggles to be understood in a hearing world. The deaf &
hard of hearing students at Southwest requested this play to
help their peers understand what they go through on a daily
basis. They even taught the audience some sign language
before the show!
In December, Project SUCCESS brought nearly 1,000 students on a field trip to The Fitzgerald Theater in Saint Paul to
see The Steeles Christmas Show. The Steeles are a family
singing group. They have earned every music award possible
in Minneapolis and performed this show solely for Project
SUCCESS students. Students from North High School,
Northeast Middle School and Humboldt Junior High in Saint
Paul attended the show. It was a huge hit with students and
we thank The Steeles and The Fitzgerald Theater for making
it possible!
