GLENEAGLES COUNTRY CLUB NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2013
the Eagle GLENEAGLES COUNTRY CLUB NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2013 “The serve was invented so that the net could play.” – Bill Cosby from the Board & Management Dear Members, Ralph Winer bog president Kraig Spina general manager We are pleased to report that the Club continues to experience a very high volume of real estate transactions, and we are expecting the 2012-2013 number to be in excess of 80 sales closed before the end of the fiscal year on October 31. This makes 2012-2013 the best fiscal year in the most recent ten years. We extend a warm welcome to all of the new families that have joined our fine Club, approximately 25% of whom have come from Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade Counties! The planning for the Clubhouse Renovation is progressing well. In July, Image Design presented concepts for Exterior and Interior Architecture and building-attached finishes. In attendance for the presentation were: Weitz Construction, Leo Daly Architects, the Common Area Maintenance Committee Members, Gleneagles Management Staff and The Board of Governors. The composition of the attendees allows for a diverse and representative cross section of our entire membership as well as those Gleneagles Staff that will ensure the operational needs are met during this clubhouse renovation. The next presentation will take place in October and will address furnishings and fabrics in addition to any refinement of the previous architectural and finish elements. The final presentation in January 2014 will address sample chairs and any remaining design elements to be confirmed prior to the onset of construction. In the month of October, the Board and Management staff will begin Roundtable meetings. The meetings encourage member communication as well as providing a forum for the Board and Staff to update our members on the new and exciting happenings around your Club. Please take time to attend one of these meetings. You may verify available dates with Varto Hairanian by calling 498-3606 ext. 131 or e-mail to [email protected]. The Gleneagles staff is preparing the 2013/2014 operational and capital budgets for presentation to the Budget and Finance Committee and the Board of Governors for their consideration and review on October 2-4. Each department head will present his or her individual budget, with supporting documentation including the methodology and logic. The Budget & Finance Committee and Board will then ask questions, discuss issues, and make recommendations with the department heads. After each department has had an opportunity to present their respective budgets, the Budget & Finance committee will deliberate and either approve or make additional recommendations or adjustments to the proposed budget for management and the Board to consider. The Board will then meet to review the Budget & Finance Committee recommendations, and if necessary, make some of their own. Finally, they will vote to accept the budget and ratify the new dues structure for the 2013/2014 fiscal year at the October board meeting. The results will then be communicated to the membership in a dues brochure to be mailed with the October monthly billing statements. You have by now received a cover letter and packet from Devcon Security. Gleneagles Country Club entered into an agreement with Devcon Security in September 2013. This new agreement provides 24/7 monitoring of the security systems in the residences within Gleneagles. The service will provide state of the art oversight by Devcon Security. Along with the monitoring, Gleneagles has fortified our perimeter security as well, allowing for even better protection to your homes. Gleneagles Country Club’s G4S Security Team will be dual monitoring all residents’ alarm systems and will continue to be the first responders in the event of an alarm activation. The Social Calendar should be arriving to your home within the first few weeks of October, and we are sure that you will enjoy the great schedule of events and activities that will keep you busy through the upcoming season! It’s that time of year again where we start gearing up for another fun filled season. This summer has been a huge success, and the food and beverage staff has stayed busy due to the great member participation. Thank you for supporting your Club. For those of you who have been around the Club the last couple of months, you will have noticed a new addition to our management team. Michael Souza joined us as the new Dining Room Supervisor. He was previously with Bimini Twist Restaurant for six years, and is very excited to be part of the Gleneagles team and looking forward to meeting all of the members. Be Nick Jolly sure to wish him well. clubhouse We are looking forward to our South African staff manager returning for the season in November. They will be joined by a group from Ireland this year, something new! So brush up on your Irish accent and welcome them to Gleneagles. We have a lot going on in October, including two Pub Nights on October 1 and 15, and Football Sunday will return on October 6. On Saturday, October 12, we are hosting the Chef’s Chophouse. This is always a very busy night so get your reservations in early. Along with the Seafood Shanty and Around The World Buffets, we are ending the month with the very popular Halloween Prime Rib Buffet and costume contest. The members go all out on this night and we have many winners! We will continue to have Kitchen Tours as long as the demand is there. We have three scheduled for October, and due to the limited number we can accommodate, they fill up quickly. We would like to remind you as the 2013/14 season fast approaches, so does the season dress code. Please familiarize yourself with this as it takes effect November 1. As your summer travels wind down and you return to Gleneagles, keep in mind that we welcome your comments and suggestions and again thank you for supporting the Club. Cheers! Nick cover story The new tennis canopies provide a great place to take in a match on Stadium Court. This season’s tennis calendar is full of new events, including Super Sunday finals events which feature a complimentary continental breakfast. Please send any feedback to Chrissy Hansen, Marketing Coordinator at [email protected] or 498-3606 ext. 129. October 2013 3 membership NEWS Kristen Laraia director of membership & marketing Membership Sales Update At the time of printing, the Membership Office has processed 69 membership sales with 11 more transactions expected to close before October 31, 2013. This is the best year for membership sales since 20022003! We know that the most effective way to reach new members is through word of mouth and referrals from our existing members! Thank you for recommending Gleneagles to your friends! Update your Information for the Membership Directory Plans are being finalized for a new Membership Directory! One of the growing pains of getting so many new members is that our Membership Directory very quickly becomes out of date. All members should expect to receive a copy of their directory listing in the mail in early October. If the information is correct, please initial the postcard and return it to the Club as soon as possible. If the information is not correct, please correct it and return the postcard to the Club before October 25, 2013. It is very important that we receive your response and/or any corrections requested. Remember, the most current Member info is always online! Stay & Play Update Although we are still temporarily without a Stay & Play condo available for prospective members to ‘stay’ within Gleneagles, we have made some modifications to our existing program and we are still organizing visits for prospective members to experience our lifestyle. Prospects are still being encouraged to come to town and experience our Club, however, they will need to find a hotel or friend’s home to stay in while they are in town. We are fortunate to have a relationship with the Hilton Suites in for our single members: gleneagles solos Gleneagles is home to a very active Solos Group at the Club, which plans social events and trips geared specifically for single people! You can treat yourself to a walk around the beautiful gardens for just $7.00 a person (open Wed-Sun 10:00 am - 4:00 pm). The silent, mysterious forms, built over a period of 15 years, were intended to be discovered as surprises amid the dense, jungle-like vegetation. They may resonate with reference to art of the past, to far-distant lands, but they are modern and timeless: unique to this artist’s vision. It is a rare gift to experience the union of this mysterious and powerful art and the natural landscape. Other points of interest at the gardens include the Rare Palm collection with over 300 rare palm species, and the historic home which was re-designed in 1934 by Palm Beach Architect Marion Sims Wyeth and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens are located about 35 minutes north of the Club in West Palm Beach. While prospective members are in town, we are coordinating day trips to Gleneagles complete with golf and lunch, and even cocktails and dinner with the Ambassadors. We have hosted two of these modified visits this summer, and both resulted in a contract to purchase! The Gleneagles lifestyle continues to attract new members, and our success rate with prospective members who actually walk through our doors and experience our delicious food, excellent golf and tennis amenities, and best of all, the friendly and welcoming atmosphere created by our members and staff, is simply impossible not to love. Summer Marketing Update returning for the season? Please submit a Change of Address form. All address change requests must be made in writing. Change of Address Forms are available at the Front Desk and Membership Office. We had great success with both of our major summer marketing projects: Golfing the World TV Show and Boca Piquant. In case you missed either of these great pieces and would like to share them with a friend who may be considering our lifestyle, copies are available at the Front Desk and on the Club website’s Latest News section. The Membership Office received several inquiries and positive feedback as a result of both of these initiatives. FLU SHOTS sign up Monday, October 21 or Tuesday, October 22 from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm in the Legends Lounge. Shots will be administered Thursday, November 7 in the Legends Lounge. Generous Members Donate Golf Clubs The First Tee of The Palm Beaches was extremely happy to accept a golf equipment donation by members of Gleneagles Country Club. Gleneagles Golf professionals Marcus Schnellenberger and Jason Hrynkiw dropped off approximately 200 golf clubs and several golf bags! The First Tee of the Palm Beaches is always looking for donations of quality golf clubs and bags. They distribute the clubs to young people that cannot afford their own set or sell them to generate funds to offset the purchase of junior clubs or to conduct their programming. I’m really excited for the new season to be here and I am looking forward to another great year at Gleneagles. GOLF GUEST POLICY Effective October 1, 2013. As it is reflected in the Gleneagles Country Club Rules and Regulations (January 2013 supplement, Golf Rules & Regulations #10), “Guests may not play more than once per month, regardless of host.” This does not include immediate family guests with an immediate family guest card and registered house guests with a valid house guest identification card. In an effort to enforce this policy while preventing uncomfortable situations, if the golf shop determines that your guest has played within the past month, you will be granted a 1-time exception and allowed to play with your guest subject to a $25.00 penalty in addition to the prevailing guest fee(s). If the same guest comes out to play a 3rd time within a month, this guest will be turned away and the offending member(s) will receive a letter for violation of club policy. Thank you for understanding and cooperating with this policy. Gleneagles Country Club This month’s tips are a few things that may help you for the up coming season: 1. Practice Time – split it up! A little full swing, a little putting, and a little chipping. Good stuff that only takes 20 minutes. 2. Getting used to Florida grass again – it is different from the Northern grass. It grabs the ball and clubface more, so you must swing through it more. Trust your swing. 3. Don’t forget about the wind! It blows pretty good here, and every 10 miles an hour of wind can hurt or help you by 10 yards. If you are 150 yards away and the wind is blowing in your face, now the distance will play like 160 yards. 4. Putting – remember, work more on speed and this will help a lot, versus worrying about the line. – Joe a note from golf course maintenance The Victory Course will be closed through October 12. October 2013 7 on our COURTS Racquet Talk Mike Puc, uspta director of tennis & fitness The “Season” is almost here, and the tennis department is ready! The Calendar of Events is the genesis of activity and we have tweaked our dynamic social offerings with something for everyone! Besides a hard copy of the calendar that is available in the Pro Shop, the Gleneagles web site (www.gleneagles.cc) has all the events dates and information listed to assist you in planning your year. As a result of feedback received in our survey, we have added monthly morning men’s, women’s, and mixed round robins with the pros so you may break from your regular group to mingle and play with new people. Complimentary refreshments will be served. We encourage all tennis members to join us for the dining portions of our mixers since the camaraderie during the dining portion is half the fun! To encourage you to participate in our events even more, we are inviting house guests of resident tennis members and spouses of annual members to join us for most of these events for a nominal guest fee. Check each registration flyer for details. It seems like tennis is always organizing leagues, and this year is no exception. Gleneagles is entered in a “Queen” and “Princess” division of Golden Girls beginning October 14 as well as the 55 Love league on November 1, and Mixed league on October 6. The largest participation of members is in the Senior League, which begins January 6 for women and January 9 for men. We typically field 4 men’s and 6 women’s teams for this league. Invitations and information to participate in the senior league will be e-mailed October 1. October Days of Wine and Roses by TAIL, of course Ruth Barnett pro shop manager October is the month for wine and roses, and Tail supplies the wine tones for early fall wear on the tennis courts. Tail’s new trendy look for tops features sexy silver crackle inserts to match up with the wine-toned or silver crackle skirts. You’ll be the talk of the town in this ‘naughty but nice’ collection. As for the roses, Tail’s latest fashion hit to be unveiled in late October features their wonderfully silky striated fabric in rose, silver and black. The striated look so cleverly camouflages those pesky less than perfect silhouettes of our bodies. Dresses are in once more and Tail produces the truest fit in women’s tennis, as well as the smartest and trendiest. 8 October 2013 pro tennis tip: Rog It has been 18 months since the USTA mandated the use of red, orange, and green balls (ROG) in tournaments for children 10 years of age and under. The USTA nicknamed the program Quick Start, since it allows children to play games after only a short initial exposure to the game and equipment. The use of low compression balls has been in Europe for many years and has been very successful. Children 8 and under play on a 36 foot court with red foam balls with a temporary 2’9” net; inexperienced 9 and 10 year olds use an orange ball on a 60 foot court; and experienced 9 and 10 year old children use a green dot ball on a 78 foot court. The net for 9-10 is the standard 3’ height. Lines are being painted on hard courts all over the country while temporary plastic lines are installed on Har Tru courts. How does this affect you? I have used ROG balls in my lessons since the beginning with amazing results. The low compression balls must be struck with force from the baseline and this forces players who had follow-through problems to create a complete swing. Footwork is improved and players can easily experiment with topspin. We have these balls available in the Pro Shop and you are welcome to borrow them and experiment with them yourself. It is not like when you learned to play, entering the court with a tin of 3 balls and spending more time retrieving balls than playing tennis. You will immediately have longer rallys, and lots of fun. Try it, you’ll like it! – Mike fitness center Heightened awareness A pioneering new study has thrown a twist into the vexing issue of waning height. Experts once thought that beyond genetics, stature was determined in childhood by factors like whether you drank the proverbial glass of milk. Tennis pro shop 499-0211 Closed Monday Courts open for play to Members Tuesday - Friday 7:30 am - 2:00 pm fitness center 495-2806 Monday Thursday 6:30 am - 8:30 pm Friday 6:30 am - 5:00 pm But, in one of the biggest projects to date investigating aging, economists from the University of Southern California, Harvard and Peking University found that lifestyle choices made as an adult have a direct impact on height loss. Shrinkage takes place mainly in the spine. Vertebral bone density decreases with age, and the gel-like discs between the bones get flatter, so building bone and strengthening the area around it – even by simply standing up straight – is crucial. And muscles lose strength, particularly in the abdomen, further pulling down posture. Even the flattening of the arches in the feet that comes with time can contribute to a loss of height. Some shrinkage is inevitable, but it’s possible to minimize height loss by adopting the following good habits: • • • • • • Eat to Build Bone – Calcium is essential for bone formation, so aim for 1,000 mg. daily – preferably from foods such as tofu and leafy greens, since calcium supplements aren’t absorbed as well as foods. Drink wisely – excessive alcohol tampers with the stomach’s ability to absorb calcium and Vitamin D. Vitamin D – supplements increase retention of calcium. Avoid extreme dieting. Skip the soda And EXERCISE is critical. A long-term Israeli study found that people who began exercising, even if they started after 40, lost only half as much height as those who stopped working out in midlife or never hit the gym at all. Try exercises that work against gravity, such as brisk walking, pilates or tennis. pleatsee! no Saturday, Sunday & Holidays 7:00 am - 2:00 pm Gleneagles Country Club 1. October 2013 9 classes & CLUBS ♠ ♥ At The Bridge Table by pat hunn We are overjoyed to welcome Ali Hall, the new Social Activities Manager, who will coordinate Gleneagles Bridge in conjunction with our superb staff of JoAnne Casen, our duplicate bridge director and ACBL club manager; Natalie ♦ ♣ Rosenstock, our mens’ teacher; and Shirley Zarwan, our ladies’ teacher. Ali’s appointment recognizes the popularity of our bridge activities at Gleneagles, and we salute the Board and Management for their insightful leadership. Already, she has instituted several welcome innovations including computerized sign-in at our duplicates (similar to golf and tennis) and member charging of instructional tuition. This season, Gleneagles Bridge will sponsor a social bridge game on Sunday evenings beginning November 3 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm in the Ladies Card Room, open to all members, both men and women, of all playing abilities. This is a pure social game and will involve neither duplicate scoring nor ACBL masterpoints, but will utilize some of our up-to-date facilities, such as duplicate boards and bid boxes. For many years, our members, Harriet and Josh Kalin gave of their valuable time and energy to sponsor social bridge on Sunday evenings. Gleneagles Bridge hopes to emulate their example, and dedicates the continuation of Sunday night social bridge to the Kalins in appreciation of their generosity and loyalty to Gleneagles. Bridge is overwhelmingly popular at Gleneagles, as testified to by the 1300 tables of duplicate bridge played last year by our members. However, it is a fact that many spouses, social partners of members, and others have not been able to share bridge’s social camaraderie. Unlike other card games, the rules and practices of bridge must be learned before participating, since bridge is always played with a partner and requires non-verbal communication. Starting in January for 8 consecutive weeks, Gleneagles Bridge will offer beginners bridge lessons, at a very nominal charge, taught by our wonderful teacher, Shirley Zarwan. More information will be forthcoming as the season progresses. Finally, I humbly wish to thank all who congratulated me on becoming a Life Master. Frankly, I’m not a better bridge player than before this title, far from it. However, I am a better person for having participated in the process, attending, and playing in world, national, regional, sectional and club competitions and meeting and playing against wonderful people. I was fortunate in learning the game from our great Gleneagles teachers, Natalie Rosenstock and Keith Hanson, and having skilful partners like Peggy Hunn and Marilyn and the late Herb Rubinstein and many others. I urge all to participate in the ACBL. Computer Club Introducing our new Website! Monday, October 21 3:00 pm Strathearn Satellite. www.gleneaglescomputer.org Bridge Computer Club News by ... Gleneagles Country Club by major tom west, director of security Distracted Driving - Each day, more than 15 people lose their lives and more than 1,200 people are injured in crashes that were reported to involve a distracted driver. Distracted driving is driving while doing another activity that takes your attention away from driving; these activities can increase the chance of a motor vehicle crash. There are three main types of distraction: • Visual: taking your eyes off the road • Manual: taking your hands off the wheel • Cognitive: taking your mind off what you are doing Distracted driving activities include things like using a cell phone, texting, and eating. Using in-vehicle technologies (such as navigation systems) can also be sources of distraction. While any of these distractions can endanger the driver and others, texting while driving is especially dangerous because it combines all three types of distraction. These are some types of activities take the driver’s attention away from driving more frequently and for longer periods than other distractions. Remember, paying attention to your surroundings is important and you need to be aware of those driving around you. Also, remember to buckle up for safety. Source: Safety Matters; a periodic communications on safety issues from the G4S North America Safety Committee Welcome to Devcon, Gleneagles’ New Alarm Provider by michael eustace, property manager As you probably have realized through other e-mail communications and a welcome packet that was sent to all residents in early September, Gleneagles Country Club entered into a new agreement with Devcon Security, a leader in providing security services to some of the most exclusive gated communities in Florida. Devcon is providing Dual Monitoring to allow Gleneagles Security to receive alarm signals in the gatehouse simultaneous with Devcon’s monitoring center. We think that you may save money, and you can enjoy the benefit of using one provider for all of your security needs.
