Dramatic changes in the composition of our communities and the demographics of America are playing out across our nation, shifting the cultural
landscape and affecting how we work, live and vote. This month, awardwinning journalist and longtime public media colleague Maria Hinojosa
(WGBH’s Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One, Latino USA) delivers her latest tour de
force: America by the Numbers, an eight-part series that reveals the powerful
stories behind the statistics (page 23).
“This is the first national television series to examine the new American
mainstream, with its growing number of Asians, Latinos, African Americans,
people of mixed race, immigrants, youth and members of the LGBTQ community,” says Maria, series anchor
and executive producer. Maria
and her team crisscrossed the
country as well the US territories
of Puerto Rico and Guam,
exploring everything from the
impact of the domestic oil
boom on Native American lands
to the soaring high school
dropout rate in Asian American
refugee communities.
Maria’s journalistic experience and immersive reporting
style enable her to connect with
fellow citizens while addressing
tough questions and timely
issues. And that’s been true
from the start of her impressive career. I first got to know her when we were
students working together at Columbia University’s public radio station, WKCR
in New York City. It was the early ’80s and Maria already was a courageous
journalist committed to expanding the stories we covered, the voices we
showcased and the audiences we served.
We’re thrilled to bring you Maria’s newest series, and in another first, to
premiere it on World (see sidebar: Where to Tune In), our must-see, WGBHcurated channel for documentary, nonfiction and journalism programs that
delve deeper, as only public media does. The series also will air on WGBH 2
and WGBX 44. Important stories that help us understand our changing
world…stories you won’t find anywhere else. It all happens thanks to your
generous annual support!

famous salsa bands,
for a performance

Three Fabulous Fillings
Tacos are one of Mexico’s most
iconic foods—and an international favorite. Tune in Pati’s
Mexican Table to see renowned
chef and food writer Pati Jinich
create three utterly different yet
equally authentic twists on this
versatile dish. Bricklayer-style
beef tacos build on a savory
combination of bacon and sirloin,
enhanced by oven-broiled tomatoes and a kick of jalapeño. Limerubbed chicken tacos, served with an irresistible side of corn guacamole,
will bring a welcome taste of warmer days to your October kitchen, as will
ultra-easy adobo fish tacos with juicy grilled pineapple salsa.

Johnson is particularly interested in how new concepts yield unintended

business led to the invention of air conditioning, which inspired mass
migration and political transformation. In the first episode, Clean, learn
how our ongoing battle
against dirt helped create

Death Comes to Austen
Two classic authors are better
than one: in Death Comes to
Pemberley, P.D. James picks up
six years from where Jane
Austen left off in Pride and
Prejudice. As the story opens,
the former Lizzy Bennett
(Anna Maxted Martin,
The Bletchley Circle) and her
Mr. Darcy (Matthew Rhys)
are busy preparing for a ball at their magnificent country home. But
the pleasant festivities are brought to a halt by an unexpected visitor,
who brings shocking news of a murder in Pemberley Woods.

America by the Numbers with
Maria Hinojosa
Behind every number, there’s a story.
This documentary series is the first
to focus on recent dramatic shifts in
US demographics. Over the course
of eight episodes, award-winning
journalist Maria Hinojosa travels the
nation to reveal how a new American
mainstream—comprising a growing
number of immigrants and people of
color—is influencing every facet of
contemporary life. The episodes:
Mainstream, USA
Designated a refugee resettlement site in the 1980s,
Clarkston, GA, is home to immigrants from more than
40 countries. See how Clarkston’s changing demographics reflect wider trends and what happens when
the old and the new South meet.

Island of Warriors
Pacific Islanders serve in the US military in disproportionately high numbers and suffered the highest
casualty rates in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Visit
the US territory of Guam to hear about the experiences
of some of its veterans.
Thu, 10/9 at 9pm
Our Private Idaho
While US suburbs are becoming more
diverse, the “exurbs” around them
remain overwhelmingly white. Travel
to Coeur d’Alene, ID, to explore both
the allure and the complexity of living
in a homogenous community.

of the boom.
Thu, 10/23 at 9pm
Politics of the New South
Return to Clarkston, GA, for the city’s
2013 local election, where three former
refugees will be running for office—
and voting—for the first time. Will
they be able to bring new voters to the
polls and make their voices heard?

The New Mad Men
With a collective purchasing power of
$3 trillion, people of color are quickly
becoming the nation’s most soughtafter consumers. Take a look inside
LatinWorks, one of America’s most
successful multicultural ad agencies,
to learn how it is tapping this market.
Surviving Year One
The US spends more on healthcare than any
other nation but earns poor rankings for infant
mortality. Find out how innovative programs in
Rochester, NY, where babies die at a rate twice
the national average, seek to address the
disparity.
Pass or Fail in Cambodia Town
Southeast Asian Americans have some of the
lowest high school completion rates in the
nation. In Long Beach, CA, the city with
America’s largest Cambodian community, meet
those who are trying to reverse this trend.
World is produced and distributed by WGBH Boston, American

Politics Across Platforms
Arts & Ideas
WGBH News is on the campaign trail this month, reporting on hotly contested races for governor and Congress along with ballot questions that will
decide the future of casino gambling in Massachusetts, among other issues.
“We’re committed to covering the issues with the local depth and local
perspective you’ve come to expect,” says Ted Canova, managing director for
WGBH News. “Our audience’s high expectations make us all strive to go
beyond the polls, beyond the horse race and beyond 10-second soundbites.”
You’ll see and hear the latest reporting and analysis across all WGBH
News platforms, beginning on 89.7 with Morning Edition, continuing on the
midday Boston Public Radio with Jim Braude and Margery Eagan and finishing with All Things Considered in the afternoon.
On television, WGBH’s public affairs shows Greater Boston, Beat the Press
and Basic Black are the places to turn for enlightened conversation about the
major issues driving the debate between candidates. And online, our popular
Web series The
Scrum features the
expert commentary
of WGBH’s political
reporter Adam
Reilly and veteran political analysts
Peter Kadzis and
David Bernstein. Watch it at

Big Picture Science:
Deep Time
Think back, way back, beyond last week
or last year, to what was happening on
Earth 100,000 years ago. Or 100 million
years ago. It’s hard to fathom such vast stretches of time, yet it’s
necessary to understanding the evolution of the cosmos and our
place in it. In this episode of Big Picture Science, discover techniques
for thinking in units of billions of years, and learn how the events that
unfolded over these intervals left their mark on humankind.

99.5 WCRB
Change Is on the Air
By Anthony Rudel
99.5 WCRB Station Manager
This month I’m delighted to bring your attention to some important and
exciting program additions, all of which have been designed to make your
WCRB listening experience even more complete.
The new programs also are helping us fulfill our mission to connect
listeners to the finest performances and greatest artists, and they’re
moving us toward our goal of becoming a vibrant force in Boston’s dynamic
music scene.
Here’s what’s happening: WCRB host and producer
Cathy Fuller is taking on a new role that enables
her to curate and produce some extraordinarily special
programming. The centerpiece of her work is the
reprogramming of Sunday nights, headlined by
Sunday Night Special—WCRB’s new monthly concert
broadcast.
The first Sunday Night Special will premiere at 8pm on October 5 and
will feature Handel’s oratorio Samson, performed by the Handel and Haydn
Society, led by Harry Christophers. We’re using this unforgettable
performance—recorded last May at Symphony Hall by WCRB—to help kick
off H+H’s bicentennial season. If you don’t know this music and the amazing
libretto, you’re in for a treat.
Also on Sunday, we’ve introduced Sunday Night at the Opera with Cathy
Fuller (8pm). In this series, Cathy is showcasing the incredible depth of great
recorded operas. Using new and legendary recordings, she’s focusing on
different aspects of the richness of the opera catalog. Sometimes the show
will highlight operas performed in and around the Boston area. As a special
bonus, there are occasional guests who select the opera recording and offer
insights about their choice.
There’s more. So that WCRB’s listeners are up to date on what is happening in and around Boston, we’ve added three concert calendars each week:
Monday and Friday mornings at 8:30am, and Wednesday afternoons at

the kind of expert guidance only WCRB can provide.
Of course our weekend schedule still includes the weekly Saturday
night live broadcasts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and our very popular
feature Boston Sunday Brunch, during which host Brad Spear serves up a
tasty mix of great music and information.
Finally, it is a pleasure to introduce WCRB listeners to Lynnsay Maynard,
our new weekday afternoon host. Lynnsay comes to WCRB after several years
on air in other markets. She is excited to be part of the family and will be
making your drive home every afternoon just a little more enjoyable and fun,
especially if you’re stuck in traffic, and let’s face it—who isn’t?
There’s a lot to look forward to as we round the bend toward the end of
2014. Keep listening for even more WCRB specials, along with details on
upcoming, can’t-miss events.
See you in November!

Covering Campaigns on the Cape
By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial
This month, as temperatures begin to cool
down, the campaigns for local and statewide
offices are heating up. And WCAI is the place to
turn for in-depth coverage of local races and
live debates between candidates.
We’re continuing a campaign-season
tradition on The Point (weekdays 9am; 7pm
rebroadcast), the daily public affairs program
I host with managing news editor Sean
Corcoran and science editor Heather
Goldstone (center). As it has for more than a decade, the show will present
debates between candidates for the state House of Representatives and
Senate, along with other local and regional offices, throughout October.
Tune in every Tuesday and Thursday to hear the candidates discuss the
issues affecting the Cape, Coast and Islands. And if you’ve got a pressing
concern that you’d like the candidates to address, call in and you could be
among the listeners who ask a debate question.
Corcoran says WCAI has become the go-to source on radio for local
political coverage.

“These debates are the only place you
can hear candidates answer thoughtful, nonpartisan questions about issues that concern
this very special area of New England,” he says.
“WCAI sees these debates as part of our public
service mission.”
If you miss a broadcast, don’t worry. All
of the debates and candidate interviews will be
posted on our website, capeandislands.org.
In addition to our local coverage, WCAI
also will carry WGBH News’s comprehensive reporting on the race for governor and various Congressional seats.
Everything is leading up to the general election on November 4, when
we will combine our efforts with NPR to bring you reaction and analysis as
the national and local results come in. Meanwhile, the news teams at WCAI
and WGBH will fan out across the region to capture the evening’s victory and
concession speech highlights.
The stakes are high, so stay with WCAI throughout the month to get to
know the candidates and where they stand on what matters to you.

A partial list of amazing things Greg can do.
Amazing because in 2004, Greg was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and given one year
to live. Nine years later, he’s alive and well thanks to breakthrough targeted cancer therapy from the
