FO TIC ON R C KE TH eMA T L E R T IN EV VIS K ER ITO SE R SID S E EDITION 8 / MAY 2016 Dear readers, In just a few days the time will have finally come! CeMAT will open its doors and around For four days, Hanover will once again become the world capital of intralogistics. Time for the doors to open CeMAT The time has come: the world’s leading trade fair for intralogistics will open its doors at 9 o’clock on 31 May. Exhibitors will be showcasing their products and services – including numerous world premieres – over a total of four days. Split into the divisions of “Move & Lift”, “Store & Load”, “Logistics IT”, “Manage & Service”, “Empack” and “Label & Print”, all of the action in Hanover will revolve around current technical trends and logistical challenges. THE CeMAT BAROMETER: FIGURE OF THE MONTH 110,000 square metres is the size of the exhibition space at this year’s CeMAT. CeMAT is putting clear emphasis on IT for the first time this year, therefore linking the physical world of logistics even more closely with the digital one. This means that the trend topics of “digitalisation” and “Industry 4.0” will be very much at the forefront in Hanover. The digitalisation trend is revolutionising value chains and new business models are being created. CeMAT is gaining further significance because the relevant technology trends are only on display in Hanover. This year the trade fair organisers are expecting international delegations from Saudi Arabia, Japan, South Korea, Norway, Columbia, Indonesia, Sweden, Russia, China and Iran. You will find an overview of the forum events at CeMAT on pages 6–7. 1,000 exhibitors will be presenting their latest products and solutions. The focus will be on the main theme of “Smart Supply Chain Solutions”. We will see how logistics chains will be able to be controlled through networks in future. When it comes to this development, digitalisation is a driver and enabler in equal measure. With the new exhibition focus “Logistics IT” you will learn what opportunities new warehouse management systems offer and how you can optimise your production and storage processes further, designing processes in a way that is easy to reproduce and reducing logistics costs. Be amazed by the innovative capabilities of the intralogistics sector at CeMAT and take the opportunity to find out about current issues at the accompanying forums. Take a look into the future with virtual reality glasses or witness the performance capabili- ties of autonomous shuttle systems. Logistics Insider gives you a first glance at CeMAT. I look forward to being able to welcome you to Hanover. Yours, Dr. Andreas Gruchow Member of the Board of Deutsche Messe AG STORAGE TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY 4.0 Intelligent networking of people, processes, goods and locations is one of the primary tasks of intralogistics. In light of new challenges posed by e-commerce or Industry 4.0, storage systems are becoming increasingly flexible. For example, the latest driverless transport system (AGV), Weasel, from SSI SCHÄFER (hall 13, stand C20) is now making it possible for even smaller companies to get into automated in-house goods transport. Thanks to its high level of flexibility and scalability, Weasel can handle almost any transport task – without complicated sensor technology or complex control systems, unlike traditional AGV systems. Many of the require- 2 LOGISTICS INSIDER · May 2016 ments of Industry 4.0 are already a reality for Knapp AG (hall 27, stand F36) also. The Austrian intralogistics expert plans to use flexible shuttle solutions to take the next step towards intelligent production logistics. It claims that combined with open shuttles – automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that navigate completely freely around the warehouse – there are no limits to a fully networked and flexible warehouse. Storing different sizes of partial quantities in different sizes of containers and deciding as late as possible which quantities are to be stored in which transport aids – this is what psb intralogistics (hall 27, stand K36) understands by “flex- ibilisation in the warehouse”. “Our first solution is a highly flexible shuttle system,” says Volker Welsch, Head of Sales for Germany at psb. “The benefits of a scalable increase in performance are obvious.” The “LEO Locative” system from Bito (hall 13, stand A20) is brand new to the market. “This self-driving, autonomous transport system can be used in a variety of ways and is child’s play to operate,” explains Winfried Schmuck, Managing Director of BITO-Lagertechnik Bittmann GmbH, headquartered in Meisenheim. “Compared with other self-driving transport systems, it doesn’t require a control system or time-consuming installation.” Title photos: Deutsche Messe AG (2) Storage systems are becoming ever more flexible Photos: Knapp, Deutsche Messe AG, Huss-Verlag/Baschlakow, Kranbau Köthen Speed, precision, flexibility and availability are key competitive factors in logistics today. FROM THE INDUSTRY CeMAT Guided Tours 2016 offer specialist visitors a unique opportunity to obtain a compact overview of their field of interest. Direct contact with target groups GUIDED TOURS In the course of guided tours, this year’s CeMAT will give visitors the opportunity to find out the latest about subject areas in which they hold a particular interest. This year’s tours pick up on current topics as regards content, and showcase a diverse selection of exciting solutions relevant to these areas. In the interest of specialist visitors, importance will above all be attached to tour participants not just taking in a simple presentation, but rather a comprehensive and entertaining demonstration of products, services and solutions. The tours will start from the on-site Robotation Academy at 10 am and 2 pm on each day of CeMAT, and last roughly two hours in each case. Logistics brands were given awards in a total of eleven categories, each with places from 1st to 3rd, the evening before the “Supply Chain Day”. Best logistics brands win awards PRIZE-GIVING The winners of the readers’ and experts’ choice awards for “best logistics brand 2016” received their prizes in Berlin at the end of April. Representatives of trade magazine LOGITSTIK HEUTE and BVL International handed the trophies over to the victorious companies at a celebratory awards night. In the “Industrial trucks and AGV” category, Jungheinrich came out on top in front of STILL and Linde Material Handling. The best logistics brand in the “Containers” division was SSI SCHÄFER, followed by Würth and Bito. And in the “IT for SCM/ERP” category, SAP beat Microsoft, Oracle and IBM to the top spot. Klaus Müller, Managing Director of Kranbau Köthen GmbH and Chairman of the Board at VDMA Ost. Thinking along the same lines as customers CRANE CONSTRUCTION Even the classic crane manufacturers are increasingly morphing into digitalised companies; under the buzzword “Industry 4.0”, the trend is clearly heading towards more intelligent systems. Where is this change coming from, what challenges exist, what added value can we offer our customers? “Smart hoists and automatic cranes... everyone’s talking about digitalisation, and it hasn’t escaped our notice,” says Klaus Müller, Managing Director of Kranbau Köthen GmbH and Chairman of the Board at VDMA Ost, the regional representation of the German Engineering Federation for eastern Germany and Berlin. “The fact is that the requirements of the market are changing.” Increasingly complex systems for production, storage and picking are placing greater and greater technical demands on crane manufacturers, he says. In crane construction in particular, this means that “preventive maintenance” modules may be used to increase system availability and reduce downtimes, for example. However, there are challenges, particularly from the point of view of small and medium-sized companies: presumed higher investment costs for digitalised solutions scare some providers away when they even hear the phrase “Industry 4.0”. In addition, the question of the IT security concerns that many companies still have has to be clarified to a satisfactory extent. “Traditional metal and mechanical engineering is becoming less and less significant, and classic crane manufacturers are increasingly having to work in heterogeneous disciplines,” says Müller. “Ultimately, those that want to remain focused on productivity and efficiency increases within customers’ companies will not be able to avoid developing clever systems and software solutions.” After all, he says, it is the customers that set the requirements: faster, more secure, more efficient. LOGISTICS INSIDER · May 2016 3 4 TOP FEATURE Digitalisation is also increasingly altering the business models of the major forklift manufacturers. Forklift manufacturers are becoming software specialists Classic forklift manufacturers are increasingly transforming into automation engineers and software specialists. After all, in the world of international competition, customers are demanding individualised and high-quality products and solutions at increasingly short intervals. AUTOMATION “Booming e-commerce is giving rise to new demands from customers,” explains Dr. Henry Puhl, Chairman of the Managing Board at STILL in Hamburg. “For example, consignment sizes are becoming smaller and smaller due to the variety of product options, which is leading 4 LOGISTICS INSIDER · May 2016 to increasingly short-term seasonalities with major fluctuations in quantity.” He believes that what we need to do here is stay abreast of this development with intralogistics solutions, and offer more individual products in smaller quantities. “It is also essential to take account of regional requirements imposed on us by globalisation,” says Puhl. “Customers have to be able to shape their processes flexibly in order to remain competitive.” At the same time, he adds, it is important to continually increase productivity and manage with less energy and resources in order to cope with growing cost pressure and the environment. He believes that it is no longer sufficient to sell the customer a forklift that he can use to transport his goods from A to B; instead, it is important to allow him to intelligently and flexibly control his logistics processes so that they can be formed in a faster, simpler and more cost-effective way. The interplay between forklifts and storage technology, software, services and customer service is key. Permanent pressure to optimise Logistics processes are under constant pressure to optimise. “We are currently seeing industrial trucks being integrated more and more closely into production Photos: Toyota Material Handling (2), Jungheinrich, STILL, Hubtex TOP FEATURE “We support our customers in internal workflows in the warehouse and production with control and optimisation software, networked sensor technology and automated vehicles and systems.” Dr. Lars Brzoska, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at Jungheinrich. “Automation solutions require detailed process analysis as well as good advice that goes beyond the sale.” Mats Lindell, Head of Logistics Solutions at Toyota Material Handling Deutschland. processes,” says Michael Röbig, Head of Marketing at Hubtex Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG. “As a manufacturer, we are faced with the challenge of offering our customers an individual and economical solution.” His company is attempting to shape developments in such a way that the individual requirement is met and can be transferred to other applications where possible. The result, he says, is the development of a kit of different assistance systems, which can be combined to form a fully automated system. “The added value for the customer essentially comes from the coordination of usage requirement and vehicle equipment,” says Röbig. “The degree of automation generally increases with the complexity of the usage requirement.” Handling Deutschland. “Transparent consulting that answers all of the customer’s questions and supports the change process, particularly during the introduction of the system, is essential.” He believes that there are many reasons for this development: “Firstly, we are seeing a change in customer structures: a growing number of big customers, known as key account clients, and their importance on the market are exerting increasing ‘market power’,” says Lindell. “This tendency is particularly strong in groups with a high handling volume.” He says that more goods have to be handled in less time in order to guarantee efficient and reliable logistics around the clock. At the same time, however, he highlights that the job market is very healthy and has a high level of employment – which makes recruiting suitable skilled staff to operate industrial trucks more challenging. In addition, new software and hardware developments are driving the automation of industrial trucks and load carriers forward, he says. Digitalisation and automation are very clear trends in intralogistics for Jungheinrich, too. “This is what we are experiencing with Intralogistics 4.0,” says Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales, Dr. Lars Brzoska. “We support our customers in internal A fast-growing market Automation of industrial trucks is currently the fastest-growing segment of the logistics market – including for Toyota Material Handling. Alongside benefits in terms of safety, the reasons for the growing attention on this sector also lie in considerable efficiency and productivity gains. “Automation solutions require detailed process analysis as well as good advice that goes beyond the sale,” says Mats Lindell, Head of Logistics Solutions at Toyota Material “Customers have to be able to shape their processes flexibly in order to remain competitive.” Dr. Henry Puhl, Managing Director at Still. “We are currently seeing industrial trucks being integrated more and more closely into production processes.” Michael Röbig, Head of Marketing at Hubtex. workflows in the warehouse and production with control and optimisation software, networked sensor technology and automated vehicles and systems – as the only provider with holistic solutions entirely from a single source.” He believes that the fact that the company is currently undergoing a process of transformation illustrates its mission statement: “Growing with Passion”. He states that it is becoming increasingly clear that Jungheinrich’s future lies in the area of logistics systems, and therefore holistic solutions. The concept of the “CeMAT Students” project was developed by students at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences last winter semester, with the aim of making access to CeMAT as easy and interesting as possible for students. The moderated discussion taking place from 14.15 to 15.30 in room 2 of the congress centre is specifically designed to be interactive. Students will have the opportunity to address their questions directly to selected company bosses and find out more about what they can actually expect from a job in intralogistics. Matthias Fischer from Toyota Materials Handling Europe, Philipp Hahn-Woernle from viastore, Dr. Henry Puhl from STILL, Klaus Tersteegen from SSI SCHÄFER and Dr. Christian Grabner from Knapp have all signed up for the CEO talk. Minister-President Weil opens CeMAT POLITICS Acting Minister-President for Lower Saxony and former Mayor of Hanover Stephan Weil (SPD) will be opening CeMAT this year. The Tuesday of the trade fair, 31 May 2016, will begin at 9.15 with the traditional opening tour by the Minister-Present and the visit to selected companies from each of the five CeMAT exhibition areas. The starting point of the one-and-a-half-hour tour is the lounge at the Robotation Academy. Weil will then hold his official opening address at the forum in hall 25 at 11 o’clock. A keynote speech by trade fair boss Dr. Andreas Gruchow will then be followed by the CeMAT business talk. Here, Dr. Christoph Beumer, Chairman of the Managing Board of the Beumer Group, and Marc-Stephan Heinsen, Director for Supply Chain Management & Logistics at trade firm Tchibo, among others, will be holding discussions with moderation by Prof. Dr. Thomas Wimmer, the Chairman of the Executive Board of BVL International. The official opening event will end at around 12 noon. Lower Saxony’s Minister-President Stephan Weil will be opening CeMAT this year. IN CONVERSATION 3 questions to... Sascha Schmel Managing Director, VDMA, the German Engineering Association for Materials Handling Technology and Intralogistics 1 How is Industry 4.0 affecting intralogistics – do you see it as a revolution or evolution? Sascha Schmel: From today’s point of view, it is definitely an evolution. Whether it will be described as a revolution in future remains to be seen. Industry 4.0 offers a lot of opportunities for those involved, as well as plenty of room for manoeuvre and time to adjust. That is essentially the horizon Photos: stk/Christian Burkert, VDMA About Sascha Schmel is Managing Director of the VDMA Materials Handling and Intralogistics Association. This is the conceptual sponsor and partner of CeMAT trade fairs worldwide. In addition, the qualified industrial engineer manages the VDMA’s Lifts and Escalators Association. that we are heading for. And we are doing so at a speed that, in my opinion, shouldn’t overtax anyone. The VDMA also supports its member companies very intensively and actively with the Industry 4.0 Forum (foerd.vdma.org/cemat). 2 Where do you see potential for application of Industry 4.0 in intralogistics? Digital processes are increasingly facilitating a new level of automation, which is also taking effect in intralogistics solutions. For example, automated guided vehicles used to be bound to fixed routes. Today, the devices find their own way independently, even reliably taking account of their human colleagues. The cloud also has a lot of potential – especially if you not only use it as a memory but actively utilise it for computing processes. Unlike the capacity of intralogistics system, here there are practically no limits. Enormous volumes of data can be processed, therefore relieving pressure on systems. As a result they will be faster and more flexible, and also be able to implement sophisticated requirements – for example recognising gestures. 3 What are you particularly excited about for CeMAT? This year we will be presenting with a different concept to in the past, and organising brief info sessions for trade fair visitors. We are being supported by experts from the VDMA, for example concerning foreign markets. In addition, we have Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Technische Logistik e. V. (WGTL) on board, presenting some interesting research projects and approaches to intralogistics. I’m excited to see how this will be received. We are definitely looking forward to many visitors in the VDMA pavilion in open area L19. Coming back to the first question, overall I am looking forward to seeing what technological developments will be presented at CeMAT. Perhaps there will even be one or two solutions that earn the label of “revolutionary”. LOGISTICS INSIDER · May 2016 9 IN BRIEF SECTION Fraunhofer IML raffles conference tickets Picking of boxes and books Robotics start-up Magazino will be presenting the latest version of picking robot “TORU” to the specialist audience in hall 27, stand C55. The mobile robot, named “TORU Cube”, combines intelligent object recognition with precise gripping technology, which facilitates precise picking of individual objects. TORU Cube is optimised for cube-shaped objects such as books, cartons or shoe boxes. Forklifts in focus This year weighing system manufacturer RAVAS will be dedicating its CeMAT trade fair stand (hall 26, stand D15) to forklifts. It believes that “iForks” is the ideal solution for determining container weight in accordance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), by weighing individual goods as well as packaging and filling materials in the container. 10 Around 30 companies will be demonstrating how workflows can be made more efficient at various points along the logistics chain. Complete logistics chain in one trade fair hall SPECIAL EXHIBITION An example logistics chain in trade fair hall 27: that is the concept of the “Innovative Logistics Solutions” special exhibition at the upcoming CeMAT. In logistics, many individual elements and the interplay between them make up a functional whole. Production processes and logistics are merging to an increasing extent and becoming more dynamic. Those that want to stand out on the future market of logistics have to bring holistic concepts up to date for an optimum flow of materials and information. Solutions are needed. How innovative complex logistical processes can work in the production environment is what the “Innovative Logistics Solutions” special exhibition will be demonstrating for the second time at CeMAT 2016. Around 30 companies will be demonstrating how workflows can be made more efficient at various points along the logistics chain. The special thing about it is that the companies taking part in the special exhibition will be participating proportionately in a shared exhibit displaying an example logistics chain – demonstrating it clearly using the latest de- velopments. The fact that each exhibitor will be contributing their specialist knowledge and an exhibit means that the companies will benefit from a practical demonstration of their products within a process workflow. “Unlike with a static trade fair stand, visitors won’t have to imagine how something could work: they can experience it live,” explains Dr. Jochen Schneider, Deputy Manager of the Institut für Distributions- und Handelslogistik (IDH) in Dortmund, which has designed the special exhibition this year. “Daily tours will explain the overall context to interested groups of visitors, but the exhibitors will also be available as contacts outside of the tours.” The participating companies include: Yaskawa Electric, Copal Handling, Fraunhofer IFF, Cabka Group, AMI Förder- und Lagertechnik, Moderne Verpackung Hoffmann, Pepperl & Fuchs, Hoffschmidt Engineering, Heinz Mayer, Ubimax, Georg Utz, Hänel, viastore, Easypack, Mosca, SMI Handling, Bluhm, Epal, Bito, Combipack, SEP Logistik, SSI SCHÄFER, Icon, Spanset, Schmitz Cargobull. INDUSTRIAL TRUCKS Industrial truck manufacturer Genkinger will be appearing at CeMAT for the first time under its recently changed name. The name suffix “-Hubtex” originating from the former subsidiary has been lost following the separation of the two companies. In hall 26, stand L01, the reorganised Genkinger GmbH will be presenting three innovatively developed forklifts: an electric multidirectional sideloader, an electric multidirectional heavy-duty reach truck and an electric four-directional pedestrian-controlled pallet stacker with pantograph. This year’s CeMAT will be particularly important for Genkinger given its renaming and increased focus on internationalisation. The new reach truck will be a highlight on Genkinger’s trade fair stand. Thanks to the integrated retraction system, the “Hermes C” prints and applies individual labels upon request without an empty label. Logical labelling LABEL PRINTING Long-standing Karlsruhe-based firm cab will be presenting thermal transfer printers and systems for printing and labelling on products or packaging in the industrial environment at stand E69 in hall 13. “We have known CeMAT as an exhibitor since it was part of the Hanover trade fair,” says Uwe Lüdemann, Head of Sales for label printing systems. “The integration of the leading trade fair Label & Print is a sign of the growing importance of printing and labelling technology for manufacturers, retailers and end consumers.” LOGISTICS INSIDER · May 2016 11 What exhibitors and visitors expect from CeMAT Your personal voucher code Dr. Robert Schönberger Get your free ticket for CeMAT 2016 now! Firstly, because it allows us to have many interesting discussions with potential customers. But also because it provides us with valuable input for our own work. At the end of the day, the topic of ‘digitalisation’ runs through the entire supply chain – including the packaging sector. What’s more, CeMAT and the special exhibition ‘Innovative Logistics Solutions’ give us the opportunity to show how our solutions can be integrated into processes in a completely concrete way.” Imprint Roland Geiger Head of Logistics, DESCH Antriebstechnik GmbH & Co. KG “For me, CeMAT will be very important this year as our company is entering into the planning for a new logistics centre. With the new plans we want to build on our strengths, such as speed, availability and flexibility, and bring them right up to date. To do this we need systems that provide us with opportunities and solutions that will allow us to react to changes in the market situation over the long term.” Photos: Messe München, Easypack, DESCH, 3darcastudio/fotolia In cooperation with Deutsche Messe AG/ CeMAT and the VDMA (German Engineering Federation).
