Memory and Meaning
BY RABBI DAN LEVIN
DLEVIN@TBEBOCA .ORG
Can you name all of your greatgrandparents?
It’s a simple question, really.
After all, we’re not talking about
ancient history, but about the fourth
generation before us. It’s amazing
how our lives can vanish from sight
in such a short amount of time. The
members of our families who lived the
prime of their lives one hundred years
ago may not even remain in the most
peripheral parts of our memory.
And one hundred years from
now, will there be anyone who still
remembers us?
The next two months represent the
prime time of the Jewish calendar’s
storytelling period. The ancient holy
days of Purim and Pesach are followed
by modern additions Yom HaShoah,
commanded to celebrate on the 14th
of Adar with merrymaking, sending
gifts to one another, and presents to
the poor.
The Haggadah requires that we
tell the story of Passover as if we,
ourselves, were experiencing the
Exodus. It doesn’t matter if we know
the story already; it is our obligation
to tell it and retell it. The Haggadah
admonishes us that “even if we were
all wise, we were all understanding, we
were all elders, we all knew the Torah,
we would still be obligated to tell about
the Exodus from Egypt. And the more
one tells about the Exodus from Egypt,
behold it is praiseworthy.”
It is important that we tell and retell
the stories of our people, for in the
telling and retelling we energize our
It is important that we tell and retell the stories of
our people, for in the telling and retelling we energize our
generation with the life force of those who came before.
Holocaust Remembrance Day, and Yom
HaAtzmaut, Israel Independence Day.
Each of these observances is designed,
quite deliberately, to promote the
spiritual task of preserving and
enriching memory.
The Feast of Purim is derived from
the commanding voice of Mordechai,
echoing from the book of Esther
throughout the centuries, obligating
his generation, and every generation
after him, to relate the story of how
the Jews were relieved from the
mortal threat of destruction. We are
generation with the life force of those
who came before. In studying their
narratives, we draw out the holiness
of their wisdom and experience – we
capture their Torah, and weave it into
our own.
We look into the eyes of the
generation of survivors, whose
numbers are thinning each passing
day, and we ask ourselves if we have
done what we could to capture their
stories, so that they are not simply
theirs, but ours. When the last of
those who saw the horror of the

camps is gone, Yom HaShoah will
implore us to tell the stories ourselves,
not as if those stories were ours,
but because those stories are ours.
When the last of those who fought to
secure the dream of a modern Jewish
homeland are no longer among us,
Yom HaAtzmaut will require that we
honor their sacrifice and their gift to
us, so that their dreams become our
own, and their mission becomes ours
as well.
We are here for a purpose: to listen
well to the stories of our people in
order that we may learn what it is
that God needs us to do in the course
of our own lives, and to teach those
stories to the generations that will
follow in order that they may complete
the holy work we will bequeath to
them, advanced but unfinished. If we
are good storytellers, and if our lives
contribute to the grand narrative of
our people’s mission, then the legacy
of what we contribute will be our gift
to generations who may not remember
our names, but who forever will tell
our story.

A MESSAGE FROM PATTY BECK
Changes
Temple Beth El President
Patty Beck
Change is difficult. Tradition is comfortable. There
are times in our lives where we must make some
changes in order to move forward and improve
or enhance our surroundings. For us at Temple
Beth El change is happening all around. Some
changes are exterior, like the enhancements to the
Holocaust Memorial statue and cameras around the
exterior of our campus for added security. Then
there are the changes to the inside of the temple.
We have new clergy and administrative staff and we
will now have a new logo to represent Temple Beth
El. Our new logo represents the spirit of change
to bring our temple’s divisions together under one
look, called branding. Many hours that turned
into months of designing and re-designing took
place until the committee felt it was just what they
wanted. And now, it is here for all to see and enjoy!
It may take a little more than an instant to become
familiar with this logo, but knowing it represents
the spirituality and traditions of Temple Beth El and
Reform Judaism this, too, will soon become part of
our tradition.
A LOGO TELLS A STORY
It offers the world a glimpse of who we
are and what we do. It should be instantly
recognizable over time, but also embrace
our core values, communicating something
unique and compelling that people will
remember.
Temple Beth El’s first logo created in
1988 and revamped in 1995 conveyed
the precious building that housed our
congregation – the first in Boca Raton,
formed in 1967. A graphic representation
of the exterior, modern structure, the logo
helped Temple Beth El to stake its claim in
the Jewish history of Boca Raton.
The next logo adopted in 2004 entered
us into the modern, fast-paced world
of synagogue shorthand. TBE came to
be known and recognized around town,
with the stark blue box and easily
recognizable letters.

By 2010 we had grown to two campuses with an expanded early childhood
center and the only mausoleum in the country built on synagogue grounds.
Three distinct logos captured the individual strengths of each of these entities,
but failed to create a cohesive identity for Temple Beth El.
2014
Our new branding seeks to convey our modern, progressive
Jewish identity while creating a unified presence, embracing
Temple Beth El as our “parent brand” and the early learning
center and mausoleum as our “sub-brands.” “Beth El” which
means “House of God” is the common core, and that ultimately is

the essence of who we are. • Some see the new logo as a graphic
representation of our ark, some see the shofar that is on the wall
in the sanctuary, some see a Kiddush cup, and others see the star.
Over time, we hope that all who see it will simply see Temple

THE FEASIBILITY STUDY
A REPORT ON THE CREATION OF A CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

As we shared with you in the
September/October 2013 issue of
The Chronicle, guided by our new
Strategic Plan, the Board of Trustees
made the important decision to
determine the necessary steps to fulfill
the vision and promises made during
the Building Tomorrow Today capital
campaign. The first step in this process
was to hire an outside consultant
to conduct a Feasibility Study. We
engaged J.S. Friedman, Inc., a wellknown fundraising firm with over forty
years of experience with synagogues.
From September to November 2013,
this firm completed a comprehensive
feasibility study and the results were
shared with the Board of Trustees at
their November meeting.
THERE WERE FOUR PRIMARY
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
1. What are the attitudinal perceptions
of the membership regarding the
programs, activities, and resources of
the temple? How do we critique the
performance of our early childhood
center, religious school, youth
programs, religious services, and the
leadership of our temple – clergy,
professional and board leadership?
2. How should we define our strategic
plan and vision? What are our priorities
for tomorrow? How do we sustain what
exists? Do members believe in our
vision and case statement?
3. Is there an advocacy base for
implementing a capital and an
endowment fund campaign? Do we
have enough workers, solicitors,
and leaders to move forward?
4. What are the financial
parameters of support? What is
a reasonable fundraising expectation
for the campaign?
WHO WAS INTERVIEWED?
113 individuals were interviewed from
63 household families representing a
broad cross section of our members.
This accounts for approximately
5% of the total membership of the
congregation.
PRIMARY THEMES ARTICUL ATED
BY INTERVIEWEES
The overwhelming majority of
members consider Temple Beth El the
central Jewish address in their lives.
For most, it is their only connection to
the Jewish community. Although there
are challenges and issues that need
to be addressed, members articulated
a positive perception of programs,
services, activities, clergy and
professional staff. This is a
higher than average positive
response, relative to other
large Reform synagogues
in a suburban
environment.
The clergy are
respected and
admired.
However,
TBE is a
large
enterprise,
and it
should strive to
increase the level of
engagement of members.
This must be a collective
responsibility of clergy, lay and
professional leadership. A significant
number of people spoke about the
need to be embraced, and have a
sense of being part of a larger Jewish
community.
The Temple has not been a good
communicator relative to its financial
operations. There are members who
question the transparency of the
Board, the absence of timely and
appropriate communication
regarding the actions
and resolutions
of leadership
committees
and the
governance
of the Temple.
There is a wide
range of thoughts
about a proposed capital
and endowment fund
campaign. It is an emotional
subject, and many felt that they
did not have access to enough
information to make an informed
evaluation. The issue also appears
to create a generational divide. More
senior members favor the renovation,
refurbishing and new construction
at the Main campus. A younger
demographic is more supportive of
expanding and enhancing the Beck
Family campus. The numbers suggest
that 40 percent of the interviewees

endorse a capital expenditure at both
campuses, 30 percent solely at the
Main campus, and 15 percent solely at
the Beck campus.
Everyone interviewed was opposed
to assuming new debt for any
endeavor.
There is a philosophical and
intellectual understanding and
appreciation for enhancing the existing
Endowment Fund. Revenue will not
increase dramatically in the coming
years from membership dues alone.
Consequently, the overwhelming
majority of interviewees accept and
endorse the premise that to sustain
what exists, reduce or eliminate the
deficit, and create a new strategic
vision will require a collective effort
from the congregation to materially
enhance the Endowment Fund.
CAMPAIGN PROJECTIONS
The information gleaned from the
feasibility study interviewees and a
review of the financial capacity of the
entire congregation suggests that the
Temple has a reasonable likelihood of
raising approximately $13,000,000 in
a capital and endowment campaign.
NE XT STEPS
After careful consideration of this study,
the Board of Trustees authorized the
formation of a Campaign Committee
to determine the scope of this capital
campaign, now called Fulfilling the
Promise. This Campaign Committee
will meet with our largest potential
benefactors through the month of April
2014, to determine if the $13,000,000
estimate provided by our consultant
is truly an accurate goal, or if we have
the potential to exceed that number
and possibly enable us to complete our
entire vision at both campuses. The
leaders of Temple Beth El, both lay and
professional, are committed to keeping
our members informed about the
progress of the Fulfilling the Promise
campaign. Please look for updates in
future issues of The Chronicle and in

On the morning of Nov. 7, 1938, a
troubled teenager lied his way into an
embassy in Paris, past some rather
nonchalant guards, was granted a
private meeting with an attache and
then shot the man dead. The boy was
Jewish, the victim was a low-level Nazi
diplomat, and the killing was quickly
seized upon by Hitler and his agents of
darkness to accelerate their campaign to
drive Jews from Germany. Come learn
about Grynszpan’s life and what inspired
Jonathan Kirsch to tell this story.

History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier
David Irving v. Penguin/Deborah Lipstadt, Lipstadt’s 2000 libel trial in
London against David Irving who sued her for calling him a Holocaust denier and
right wing extremist, was described by the Daily Telegraph (London) as having “done
for the new century what the Nuremberg tribunals or the Eichmann trial did for earlier
generations.” The Times (London) described it as “history has had its day in court and scored
a crushing victory.” The judge found David Irving to be a Holocaust denier, a falsifier of history, a
racist, and anti-Semite. According to The New York Times, the trial “put an end to the pretense that
Mr. Irving is anything but a self-promoting apologist for Hitler.”

Mitzvah Projects
OLIVIA KLEIN
When I thought about the project and what had meaning to me, I remembered
when I was little, I did a project with my school where we went to visit a nursing/
rehabilitation center. I did not understand at that point how much it would mean
for us to visit the people who were there until I worked with an older woman to
help create a flower pot project. While she looked fine, she explained to me that
she was blind. I helped her paint her flower pot as she described to me the things
that she wanted. At first, I found it scary that she was blind, but then I realized
what an amazing person she was and how doing the artwork and describing her
memories to me made her so happy that I felt good too.
This memory lasted with me, and in third grade, I returned to the same
facility to do a volunteer project with my class. We painted a picture frame.
Again, I found that the residents were so happy when
we were there that they asked us to come back again
and again.
I came to learn that it is a proven fact that art is
a form of therapy that is beneficial to all those who
are involved in a rehabilitation process. It helps with
focus, maneuverability and outlook. With that in
mind, I have elected to conduct an ongoing art class
for the residents at the Boca Rehabilitation Center as
my Mitzvah Project for my Bat Mitzvah.

I have created these ‘Caught

signs. These signs not only
‘catch’ the texter in cars, but it
also reminds you as the driver,
not to text & drive! Signs are
$5 each & the proceeds are going to help fund those
who are unable to transport themselves to religious
services & activities here at Temple Beth El. I have
also created a Facebook page: www.facebook.com/
CaughtYaTextingAndDriving, which I hope you would
‘like’. The purpose of the Facebook page is to educate
readers about the dangers of texting & driving, as well
as distracted driving, as I put up facts and information
daily. If you would like to purchase a sign, please email
me at [email protected] or send
me a Facebook message on my page. Thank you for
supporting me and my mitzvah project! Mia.

Journey Through Judaism
TBE’s Journey Through Judaism students had the opportunity to travel to Los
Angeles over MLK weekend and experience the POWER that we all have. While
in LA we learned about the power of words at Improv Olympix and a poetry
slam, the power of addiction at Beit T’shuvah – a drug rehabilitation center
for Jewish adults, the power of prayer with our clergy and youth led Shabbat
services, the power of Art at Paramount Studios, and the power of our actionsto speak up when we see an injustice. Our students, joined by the teens from
Temple Beth Sholom of Miami Beach, also took in some sights, hiking Mt.
Hollywood, stopping by Grauman’s Chinese Theater and the Hollywood Walk
of Fame, spending time in Santa Monica and Venice Beach and touring UCLA.
The students returned with their eyes opened to the power of their experience,
excited to bring their learning back into our community.

MEN’S
SEDER
Thursday, April 10, 2014
6:30 - 9:00 PM
This very special evening with
Rabbi Levin is geared specifically to
adult men.
All Temple Beth El members and
their guests are welcome to attend.
More than social conversation,
this evening is an honest and
forthright discussion about themes
of difficulty, anguish, redemption
and victory as experienced by
the Jewish People through Moses.
The Rabbi explores the links
between the Passover story and
modern times leading to a better
understanding of ourselves. A
buffet dinner, catered by Chez
Gourmet, is $25/per person.
