rleen Olson has been a professional photographer for over 30 years working in both studio

and environmental locations. She has photographed archeology, architecture, aerial views,
commercial products, portraits, weddings, special
events and fine art. She has lived and worked in
southern Humboldt County for 20 years.
Her photographs have been published in local newspapers, environmental
newsletters, college publications, books, catalogs, brochures, and magazines.
A compilation of her photographs are part of the permanent collection of
Women Photographers in Humboldt County, 1850-2000, by Peter Palmquist,
which resides at the Beinecke Library, Yale University. Arleen has exhibited
her photographs throughout the Mid-West and Northern California.
She is the author and publisher of Humboldt Wild, a photography
book of Humboldt County. Her hope is that it will inspire people to
visit and appreciate all the wonders Humboldt County has to offer.
The more Arleen traveled this area, the more she realized what a truly
unique place Humboldt County is. Humboldt Wild is a chronicle of
her explorations of the wild environs of Humboldt County and of the
amazing spirit of the people who live there. Her spectacular visual
journey through southern, central and northern Humboldt concludes
with a chapter highlighting the county’s numerous renowned events,
which together with such a diverse environment, makes living in
Humboldt County extraordinary.
Signed copies of the Humboldt Wild book are available from the artist
for retail, wholesale or large quantity discounts, as well as a large collection of stock photos, for use in online or print publication and fine
art photographs on archival paper.

ureka lies in the heart of the Redwood
Empire, renowned for the magnificent
coastal redwoods, Sequoia sempervirens.
These ancient wonders, remaining
from the days of the dinosaur, are the
tallest trees in the world and have
played a vital role in fashioning
Eureka’s rich heritage.

The coastal location on Humboldt Bay
and an abundance of lumber provided
a ripe environment for the birth of
this 19th-century seaport town. More
than 140 years ago, miners, loggers
and fishermen made their mark in
this unsettled wilderness. Filled with
hopes and dreams for a new prosperity, Eureka was founded in the spring
of 1850. Gold had been discovered in
the nearby Trinity region, and miners
needed a more convenient alternate to
the tedious overland route from
Sacramento.
Stately Victorians rising along the
waterfront reflected the great prosperity experienced during this era. Many
of these charming Victorian homes
remain today in their original elegance
and splendor. The magnificent Carson
Mansion, on 2nd and M streets, is
perhaps the most spectacular, built in
1885 by lumber magnate William
Carson as a project designed to keep
millworkers busy during a slow period in the industry.
Humboldt Bay was also host to a variety of other industries. Salmon fisheries sprang up along the Eel River as
early as 1851, and within seven years
2,000 barrels of cured fish and 50,000
pounds of smoked salmon were
processed and shipped out of
Humboldt Bay.
Today, the bay is still the center for
commerce in Eureka and home to
more than 100 fishing vessels which
land more rockfish, Dungeness crab,
salmon, shrimp and oysters than any
other region in California.
Eureka is one of California’s historic
landmarks and offers a unique and
enchanting experience for the present
day tourist. One can still capture the
feeling of that era strolling along
Eureka’s quaint Old Town waterfront
past beautifully restored Victorian
homes and storefronts breathing in
the fresh sea air, watching boats
returning with fresh catches of fish
and crab.
