RELEASE:
For allowing me to participate in the Freedom Valley Bike-a-thon, 1 agree to release any claims or demands of any nature
G E A R - U P
George Washington crossed the Delaware River by boat. You can cross it by
bicycle (on a bridge, of course), to ride
back through history at G E A R Up '85,
June 1 4 - 1 7 , at Trenton State College
near Trenton, N.J.
The Princeton Free Wheelers, the host
bicycle club, plan rides past cultivated
fields and rolling farmland, past historic
battlefields and monuments, over rounded
hills and tranquil valleys, through colonial
villages and through covered bridges.
Although New Jersey is the most heavily urbanized and industrialized state in
the nation, much of its rural character has
been retained and you will find thousands
of miles of little-used roads. The Garden
State is second only to Florida and California in the production of fresh fruits and
vegetables.
Rides
We've definitely got the terrain . . .
from flat, flatter, flattest, to hill, hillier,
h i l l i e s t . . . not to mention variety . . , 30
rides from which to choose . . . and all
with a history lesson or two. Here are but
a few:
Discovering Columbus
Ride through farm country to Crosswicks, a Quaker community, and stop at
the Friend's Meeting House to see the
Cannonball embedded in the wall and
the 300 year old white oak in the yard.
Then on to Bordentown past Clara Barton's (founder of the American Red Cross)
school house.
R a l l y
Tippecanoe and Tyler State Park Too
If former Presidents Harrison ("Tippecanoe") and Tyler were alive today they
would urge everyone to visit the Indian
Walk Farmers' Market and Tyler State
Park, both in Bucks County. Bucks County
has a charm hard to match with many
18th century stone houses dotting the
landscape.
Tour of the State Capital Complex
This ride passes the planetarium, art
museum, state capitol, the O l d Barracks,
War Memorial building, and the William
Trent House. Guided tours available for
many of these.
Sourland Mountain Grand Slam
This ride fits the hilliest category and
comes about a mile from Charles Lindbergh's home—the scene of his child's
kidnapping.
Flemington Steam Train Excursion
Ride to Flemington, famous for furs,
glass, and antiques, and explore the bargain outlets in two colonial shopping
complexes. Nostalgia seekers can take the
train back to Ringoes.
Princeton Historical Tour
Some of the historical sites included in
this ride are Drumthwacket, the Princeton Battlefield, Princeton Theological
Seminary, and the former homes of Presi-
G E A R Up—Princeton features rides to historic sites, state parks, rolling countryside, and rural
villages.
dents Woodrow Wilson and Grover Cleveland, as well as Albert Einstein, A free
walking tour through Princeton Universit)'
is available. You'll want to stop at the
Princeton University chapel, one of the
largest in the world and full of stained
glass windows, and at Nassau Hall, the
site of the Continental Congress in 1783.
Other rides will include trips to wineries, canals, castles, covered bridges (seven
in all), museums, waterfalls, windmills,
and a state park with ringing rocks. And,
we have found the ultimate in flat centuries. So if you've ever wanted to try one,
G E A R U p is the place.
Meet Penseyres
Pete Penseyres, ultramarathon cyclist
and winner of the 1984 Race Across
AMerica, and his wife Joanne, will be the
main speakers Saturday and Sunday
nights, sharing a slide presentation and
their personal experiences in the 3,047
mile R A A M . Their second presentation is
about tandem cycling, another authoritative subject for the Penseyres, who are
tandem tourists. Pete was part of a fourman team that set a transcontinental team
tandem record in 1979.
For the "off" hours (off of your bicycle,
that is) there will be lots of activities from
which to choose. A rally wouldn't be a
rally without the traditional ice cream
social (who overheard of a bicyclist going
a whole weekend without ice cream?).
And of course there v.il\e an opportunity
to "honor your partner and your corner"
at the sq u are dance. The big band sound
will be heard on Saturday night after the
outdoor picnic, and country-rock and
dix i eland music will also be a part of the
week e nd offerings.
Work s hops, ex h ibits and fun
Manufacturers' ex h ibits, as well as local
bik e shops, will be set up for business or
"just for your viewing pleasure" on Saturday and Sunday. Work s hops to interest
all ages and ability levels and covering a
variety of areas (both bicycle related and
non-related) will be given on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons and evenings.
Tour options
A few special events have been planned
for those interested in some of the area's
special interest sights. T w o different bus
trips will be available, one going to Atlantic
City, for those wishing to try their luck in
casinoland; and one to the L e high County
Velodrome in Trex i ertown, Pa., to check
out the bicycle racing scene. A homemade
colonial luncheon will be served in the
original dining room of the Trent House
(built in 1714) on Saturday lo those
taking the Trenton historical bike tour.
All of these events are options offered on
