Annual Report Edition
Dear Friends,
2013 was an outstanding year for Cornerstone. The school took a leap forward
with the awarding of accreditation by the Association of Christian Schools
International (ACSI) and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
(MSA). As one of only six urban schools in Pennsylvania accredited by ACSI,
Cornerstone has distinguished itself as a leader in Christian education for inner
city children. What a wonderful award to receive in our 25th anniversary year!
This was the first step in moving Cornerstone to a high-performing school; the
first step in advancing from a good school to a great school. In his book, Good
to Great, Jim Collins wrote, “We don’t have great schools, principally because
we have good schools. We don’t have great government, principally because we
have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is
just so easy to settle for a good life. The vast majority of companies never
become great, precisely because the vast majority become quite good – and that
is their main problem.”
Believing that God is calling us to move Cornerstone from good to great, a
challenging School Improvement Plan has been adopted by the Board of
Trustees, detailing actions the school will fulfill in the next several years. The
priorities of the plan largely focus on strengthening the academic program,
including teacher professional development, classroom coaching, curriculum
development around the Common Core State Standards, the addition of a foreign
language program, a guidance counselor, and a librarian. Issues of school
sustainability and facility improvements will also be addressed, as will sharing in
the development of space and programs at The Common Place, the exciting new
project in the former church facility next to the school.
The Bible tells us that without vision God’s people perish. Acting upon the
vision God has inspired in us, we are taking bold steps to advance the quality of
education our students receive. As good as 2013 was for Cornerstone, 2014 and
beyond will be even better, as we move the school from being good to being
great.
In this newsletter you will see the names of hundreds of individuals, churches,
foundations, and corporations who supported Cornerstone in 2013 with financial
contributions of nearly $1.3 million and thousands of hours of volunteer service.
Words cannot begin to express how grateful we are for this generous outpouring
of support for our students. Thank you for your faithful support through prayer,
service, and financial gifts. Cornerstone would not be where we are today, nor
will we become the great school God desires, without you.

Principal’s Desk
This is an exciting time for Cornerstone Christian Academy and our friends. We are celebrating
our 25th anniversary as well as our accreditation by two prestigious accrediting agencies. This
accomplishment was not easy, but the faculty and staff’s prayerful work and commitment
brought us to this place of distinction. We are elated about our current status, but we know our
work is far from complete. We are committed to improving the quality of education we provide
for our students, as well as working with our teachers to improve their professional skills.
Although snow days have played havoc with our schedule this year, we are making up lost days
by eliminating and shortening planned breaks. Currently, our students are prepping for the state
standardized tests (PSSA) that will be administered in late March. Students are also beginning to
work on their science projects for Science Day that will be held in May. Our 8th graders are anxiously waiting to hear from high schools about acceptance for September, and our kindergarten students are preparing to show
-off their new reading skills to the 1st grade teacher. In May, a group of students and teachers will spend two nights in
Washington, DC, visiting the memorials, historical sites, and an evening dinner-cruise down the Potomac River. Also in May,
we will hold our annual National Day of Prayer Celebration. Please continue to keep our students and teachers in your prayers
as we continue to serve and praise the Lord at Cornerstone Christian Academy.

Ken Frazier Asks: “Can You be Stopped?”
Cornerstone was the host of a press conference on February 11th, "Cornerstone
Christian Academy: 25 Years in Philadelphia, and our City's Continual Pursuit of
Equal Quality Education." Parents, supporters, community members and the media
gathered to hear the message that all children, no matter their school of choice, have
a right to equal, quality education. Joining Ken Frazier, Chairman and CEO of
Merck and Cornerstone Trustee, were Pennsylvania State Senator Anthony Hardy
Williams, Philadelphia School Partnership Executive Director Mark Gleason and
City of Philadelphia Councilman Kenyatta Johnson. Each emphasized that students'
enrollment in public, charter or independent schools should not dictate the level of
educational opportunity.
Ken delivered a personal message of hope, sharing that his father “always told me that it didn’t matter how many forces were
arrayed against you, the only question is, 'Can you be stopped?'” Also active in educational change in Philadelphia, the other
speakers echoed Ken's advocacy for equal, quality education. Mark Gleason shared that although the press conference was his
first time visiting the school, he was aware of the history and achievements of Cornerstone graduates. Councilman Johnson
noted that in a city where high school completion is sagging, 95% of Cornerstone graduates complete high school on time and
two-thirds move ahead to post-secondary education.
In this 25th year of celebration, amid all the activity of this press conference and other events, Ken's question resonates. Now
that accreditation has been achieved, an action plan is in place to create greater and increased opportunity for children to
succeed in southwest Philadelphia. Together, the supporters, volunteers, parents, board and staff of Cornerstone will not be
stopped in providing the highest standards possible for academic achievement and spiritual development.

Accepting the Call to Service
Mentoring Makes A Difference
Below is the profile of a mentor who began meeting with her student in the Fall of 2013. Each mentor pair has their own story
of how they got started. Mentors include alumni, board members, young professionals, college students, church partners, and
community members, as well as people who have found out about us for the first time via the internet or word of mouth!
Mentors meet twice a month for lunch, and each pair has set goals for the year. Read more about one of our mentors and
her mentee below.
Brittany & Alyiah
Brittany is a Cornerstone Alumni who graduated 8th grade in 2003, she has two
brothers who are students here currently. Alyiah is a 7th grade student who has been
at Cornerstone since 4th grade.

Volunteer Library Program Underway
We are wrapping up our first round of Library Sessions with our 3rd
& 4th grade classes! Students in 4th grade read The Indian and the
Cupboard and in 3rd grade they read a variety of fiction and nonfiction stories. We are now getting ready for our next session with
the 1st & 2nd grades, running from March 5th to April 9th. The final
session will be with Kindergarten classes, running from April 30th June 4th. Sign up to join us weekly on Wednesdays for five weeks
to read with students and help them check out books to take home.
Program Times:
2nd Grade (Kindergarten A): 12:30pm- 1:30pm on Wednesdays
1st Grade (Kindergarten B): 1:30pm- 2:30pm on Wednesdays

Teaming Up For Success
Each Fall and Spring, Cornerstone hosts Teammate Day, a lunch gathering for Middle
School students and their Teammate sponsors. This is an exciting time for students to
meet the person who is investing in their education, and learn more about them. It's
rewarding for the adult Teammates to have a young person in their life with whom they
can create memories. A second cohort of Teammates started the program in October, so
both adults and students were nervous about meeting for the first time. Eight teams of
students and adults gathered at the Fall Teammate Day. Besides enjoying activities and
lunch, each pair had endless conversations. By the time we concluded at 1:00 p.m., it
was difficult to get the adults to leave for home and the students to go back to class.
Teammate Day for Spring 2014 is on March 26th. Five 6th grade students are still in need of adult Teammates. Students who
currently have Teammates are excited to develop relationships with their Teammates at Teammate Days, through cards and
notes, and by sharing lunch at the school throughout the year. These moments of connection help our students know someone
is cheering for them, and advocating for their success. Saif, a Cornerstone student since kindergarten, after receiving a
Valentine's Day card from his Teammate said, "My Teammate remembers everything."
