I N T H I S I S SU E: Musical Theater Presents “The Aristocats” / Teacher Appreciation Week / Openings on 2016-17 PTA Board
P r i n c i pa l’ s M e s s a g e
Our Science Fair was a huge success with a strong turnout and plenty of student
projects on display. Special thanks to science committee chair Christine Droker
and the PTA science committee members for all their help in making this event
a success! Two long-time standing members will be leaving us after this year.
Marcy Harrington and Dao Mai have been with us since the inception of the
science fair and we thank them for their dedication and commitment throughout
the years.
Our spring Musical Theater performance will occur on Sunday, April 24th at 6 PM and on Monday,
April 25th at 2 PM and 7 PM. The performance is always fun and entertaining, so we hope to see
you at one of the evening performances or feel free to stop by for our school-wide performance at
2 PM on April 25th.
Testing in Seattle Public Schools continues this month and during the month of May. The basic
goal of assessing students’ academic skills is to gather data to examine their growth, strengths
and needs. The information can then be used to inform the type of instruction that occurs in a
classroom. The data can also be used to determine school academic priorities and the type of
processes used to enhance teaching and learning.
Each spring, all Washington public school students in grades 3 through 8 and high school are
tested in English language arts (ELA) and math on the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA).
Students in grades 5, 8, and high school are also tested in science.
The Measurement of Academic Progress assessment (MAP) is administered to all students in
grades K-2 and they will be assessed in reading and math. The window for this assessment is
May 12 to June 10. As many of you know, MAP is a computerized test that we administer two to
three times per year during the fall, winter and spring The test is used as an important data point
to measure the growth, strengths and needs of our K-2 students in reading and math. Your child’s
teacher will notify you of their testing dates and times.
Please be sure to schedule appointments outside of scheduled testing times. Be sure your
child is well rested and that they have a daily breakfast at home or school. Also, please ensure
that he or she reads or is read to for a minimum of 20 minutes each day. Thank you!

Grand Slam Camp will be
at Lower Woodland Park
for its 23rd year, running
August 1-4. Grand Slam is
a baseball/softball camp for
kids ages 7-12 and operated
by teachers leading a staff of
current college ballplayers,
providing positive role
models. Campers learn the
game in a positive, upbeat
and safe environment. The
culture of baseball and the life
lessons the game provides
are a point of emphasis.
For details, visit www.
grandslamsports.org.
The first week of May is a chance to show Greenwood teachers and staff how much our
community values them. The PTA is arranging to keep the teachers and staff supplied with small
treats and tokens throughout the week – we want the students to have the opportunity to show
their love, too.

There are a few great opportunities opening up for the 2016-17 PTA Board. This is a chance
to combine your passion for our school community with your personal skills and be a positive
influence for Greenwood!
•Co-Chair for Events: Act as the Board liaison for the various Events committees (Music and
Movement, CONNECT, Science Fair, etc.). Formal membership in these committees is not
required but you may be a part of them if you choose. The Events Chairs manage the PTA events
calendar, liaising with the Main Office to coordinate PTA events with school functions. They are in
charge of reserving school space for PTA meetings and events; coordinating the All-School BBQ
early in the year; planning Teacher Appreciation events in May; and finding child care for General
PTA meetings.
•Co-Chair for Fundraising: Act as the Board liaison and help to promote participation
opportunities for all Fundraising committees (Auction, General Fund Drive, Jog-a-Thon, apparel
sales and other small fundraisers throughout the school year). Encourages participation in
corporate matching programs.
•Co-Chair for Community Outreach: Facilitates connections with Greenwood community,
including continuing partnerships with Greenwood Chamber of Commerce (monthly meetings)
and local organizations such as the PNA, Senior Center and 826. Looks for community grants
available to fund PTA activities and helps to write grant proposals when selected. Assists with
finding guest speakers for General PTA meetings.

School vaccination regulations in Washington State have changed for the upcoming 2016-17
school year. The WA State Department of Health now requires two doses of chickenpox (Varicella)
vaccine for all students in grades K through 12.

Check your student vaccination records or contact your health care provider and be sure that each
student has the required vaccinations before the start of classes in September 2016.
School nurses will review each student’s vaccination records and will notify parents through
regular postal mail by the end of the current school year if a student needs additional vaccinations.
Students who do not have two doses of vaccine by the start of classes in September 2016, could
be excluded from school.
Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease that can be very serious for children and adults. Two
doses of vaccine are very effective against the disease.
More detailed information can be found on the SPS webpage: http://bit.ly/1nm3Umj. You can
access your family’s immunization records through the Washington Immunization Information
System: http://1.usa.gov/1QyXmsJ.
