SUMMER CAMP GUIDE 2016
Table of Contents
Dear Families,
Did you know that 80% of girls
named camping as their most
memorable Girl Scout experience?
Tour any of our six day or four
resident camps during the summer
and it is easy to see why. Whether
enjoying physical challenges
such as horseback riding, sailing
and backpacking, or challenging
their minds with science, art and
creative writing, girls are empowered to take the lead and embrace
adventure. No matter which camp I visit, I am always impressed with
the girls’ sense of confidence, openness to new experiences and
support of each other.
General Information ................................................................. 4–5
Nothing is as inspiring as watching girls cheer on a friend as she
conquers her fear of heights on the ropes course, or work as a team
to paddle a canoe across the pond. Girl Scout camp provides a safe,
nurturing environment where girls are free to be themselves and
motivate each other to do amazing things. It is the ideal setting for girls
to embrace challenges and develop life-long skills all while having fun
and making new friends.

Camp also offers girls a way to stay active during the summer school
break. Our programs are designed as exciting, hands-on adventures.
Every girl, from the youngest day campers to teenage counselors-intraining, has the opportunity to experience traditional camp activities
like swimming, hiking, sing-alongs and campfire cooking. Plus, with
hundreds of programs—including over 95 new offerings—to choose
from, there is something to suit any interest: STEM, art, boating,
theater, archery, outdoor skills and more.

In our hectic, technology-driven world, give your Girl Scout the
opportunity to disconnect from her devices and reconnect with
nature. You can even “unplug” and spend quality time together during
one of our family camp weekends at beautiful Camp Menotomy,
a wonderful way to share in the outdoor adventure.
We hope to see you at camp this summer!

GENERAL INFORMATION
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts’ camp programs offer girls opportunities to explore their personal
interests, creativity and the environment under the guidance of caring, trained adults. Imagine a summer
full of visual and performing arts, sailing and swimming, hiking and biking, science and much more!
From white sands to green hills, Girl Scout camp is a place where girls can spend the summer discovering
the wonders of the great outdoors. Register anytime at hercamp.org. Not a Girl Scout yet? Not a problem!
Prior Girl Scout or troop membership is not required. We can’t wait for you to join us!
STAFF
Our camp staff are selected for their interest and ability to work with
young people, teach and share skills, be part of a team, and commit
to the values of honesty, respect, care and responsibility. All staff
attend pre-camp orientation where they learn or review camping
skills, risk management and safety procedures, Girl Scout program,
human relations and communication skills. Many of the staff return
each year and travel from all around the world to join us.
CAMP INFORMATION NIGHTS
Our staff is bringing camp program information to you! To invite us to
your event or meeting, or suggest a location for a camp information
night, email [email protected] and we will be happy to schedule a
visit. This year, additional camp open house dates make it even more
convenient to tour our properties before summer. Please see our
camp-specific pages for all open house, meet the staff and camp
information night dates. Dates will also be listed at hercamp.org.
Even if your camper is not ready for camp this season, it is always a
great idea to visit in preparation for next summer. Visit us during the
summer to see all that camp has to offer. This might make choosing
a camp or program easier and ensure a successful first time at
camp. To tour camp this summer or at any time during the year,
email [email protected].
ACCREDITATION
American Camp Association (ACA) Accreditation
means that the camp you are considering for
your child cares enough to undergo a thorough
annual review of its operation—more than 250 standards from
staff qualifications and training to emergency management. ACA
collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics,
the American Red Cross and other youth service agencies to assure
that current practices reflect the most up-to-date, research-based
standards in camp operation.
4
All staff are at least 18 years of age or are high school graduates.
Criminal background and sexual offender checks (C.O.R.I. and
S.O.R.I.) are conducted on all camp staff. To comply with the
Massachusetts Department of Public Health and to be licensed by
the local board of health, we inform you that you have the right to
request proof of background checks, camp health care policies,
discipline policies, as well as policies for filing grievances.
HEALTH & SAFETY
Our priority is the safety and well-being of every camper. Our camps
follow all safety and risk management guidelines set by Girl Scouts
of the USA, the local, state and federal boards of health, and the
American Camp Association (ACA)—a national camp organization
that sets high standards for both the health and safety of campers
and staff, and the delivery of quality programs. All our camps are
ACA certified. All camps in Massachusetts must comply with
regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (105
CMR 430.000). New Hampshire camps are in compliance with the
New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services Rules (Part
Env-WS 1120.00). In addition, the board of health of the town in
which the camp is located licenses each camp.
WEAPONS, DRUGS, SMOKING POLICY
Campers and staff are not permitted to bring drugs, alcohol, pets,
tobacco products or weapons of any kind (e.g., Swiss army knives,
scissors, etc.) to camp. Prescription medication should arrive in its
original container with the camper’s name and be turned over to the
bus monitor or health supervisor upon arrival at camp.

GENERAL INFORMATION
HEALTH INFORMATION
INCLEMENT WEATHER
A health care supervisor (HCS) staffs the camp health center and
a health care consultant (local physician) is on call. All campers are
required to have a physical examination within 12 months prior to
arriving at camp. All health forms must be completed and signed by
a physician each year (including inoculation update) and submitted
no later than May 2, 2016. Your registration confirmation email will
instruct you to log into your CampInTouch account and complete
all forms needed for camp. No child may attend camp without
submitting the health history form and physician’s examination.
Horseback riding, high ropes and water activities may be canceled
when weather conditions are unsuitable. Alternative activities will be
provided. Refunds are not given when activities are canceled due to
weather conditions.
CARE OF MILDLY ILL CAMPERS
Staff is responsible for reporting any signs of illness to the health
care supervisor (HCS), who assesses each situation. The HCS may
administer over-the-counter medications she believes are warranted
if they are authorized by the parent/guardian. If the HCS determines
the child should be sent home or seen by the health care consultant,
she informs the camp director and arrangements are made. In both
situations, the parent/guardian is contacted as soon as possible.
CAMPERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts makes every attempt to offer
summer camp opportunities to all girls. If you have a camper with
special needs, please call 617-350-8335 to discuss how we can
make your camper’s experience one that is exciting, appropriate and
fulfilling. The information you share with us about your camper will
be held confidential, shared only as HIPAA allows, and in accordance
with your wishes.
CAMP LIVING
Campers are placed in groups of 5 to 30 girls, with 2 to 5 staff per
group. At resident camp, girls stay either in cabins (6–12 girls), yurts
(6 girls), tent-a-los (5 girls) or platform tents (4–6 girls); all are
supplied with cots/beds and mattresses. The program, number of
girls and campers’ ages determine the living arrangements. Each unit
has shelter for rainy day activities, bathroom facilities and storage.
CAMP BUDDIES
A camper may request one “buddy” per session. Both buddies must
register for the same camp, program and session, and must list each
other’s name on the registration forms. The camp director has final
say on camp placement.
PROGRAM CANCELLATION
If a program is canceled for lack of registrations, every effort will be
made to place each girl in a similar program. Camp sessions will be
held regardless of weather, but the program may be modified in
extreme weather conditions.
HORSEBACK RIDING PROGRAMS
The horseback riding program allows campers to develop riding
skills and learn about equine care and barn management. All girls
registered for the riding program must bring long pants or jeans. If
your camper has a Pony Club-approved riding helmet with chin strap
or one-inch heel boots, she may bring them to camp; if not, camp will
provide an approved riding helmet and boots.
For safety purposes, all girls will be skill-tested and the riding director
will place girls in programs/lessons that reflect their skill level.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS
Directions to camp will be included in your confirmation packet and
can also be found on the individual camp pages at hercamp.org.
Please follow driving directions provided as GPS directions can be
unreliable for camp. Note: Wind-in-the-Pines day camp and resident
camp have different addresses.
DAY CAMP TRANSPORTATION
Transportation is included in the cost of day camp. Bus stop location
details are included in this book. To select a bus stop for pickup and
drop-off, complete the Day Camp Bus Selection form available via
your CampInTouch account.
RESIDENT CAMP TRANSPORTATION
Resident camp bus service will run to/from Boston, Braintree,
Woburn and camp for $50 each way. Refunds of bus fees will be
issued only if notice of cancellation is given seven days prior to the
pickup date. Buses may be canceled by GSEM due to insufficient
enrollment.
