Summer 2014 - Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal
ON FUNDRAISING SUMMER 2014 FOCUS Registered Charity No 1075308 THE SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR OUR FUNDRAISERS! INSIDE THIS ISSUE: YCC Projects Funded Team YCC Trek China and Nepal Extraordinary Community Fundraising YCC Events Calendar Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal - the official fundraising arm of Leeds Cancer Centre at St. James’s Institute of Oncology www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk Dear Friends & Supporters, Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal Fundraising Department, Level 7, Leeds Cancer Centre, Bexley Wing, Beckett Street, Leeds LS9 7TF T: 0113 206 8444 or 0113 206 8620 E: leedsth-tr.YCCFundraising@ nhs.net W: www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk Bexley Wing, Leeds Cancer Centre iNside THIS ISSUE 4 - How We Spend Your Money 6 - China Trek 2014 8 - Coming Up 12 - Nepal Trek 2014 14 - Bexley Arts Programme 18 - Kate Granger Update 19 - Great Yorkshire Stairclimb 20 - Staff Support Throughout the winter months our fundraising plans have continued to develop and our supporter base has been further strengthened as we persevere in our efforts to reach our £10m appeal target in support our Yorkshire cancer patients. Fundraising initiatives have flourished in the local and regional community; individuals, clubs and societies are all instrumental in supporting our SHEILA O’SHEA projects and instigating events of their Appeal Director Yorkshire Cancer Centre own. We can never say ‘Thank You’ often enough for all your efforts in support of our patients. We have much to be grateful for in the forthcoming summer months as we look forward, yet again, to our now well-established YCC annual events: the Yorkshire Three Peaks climb; the Leeds 10k - which this year boasts a 60-strong team from Leeds Cancer Centre, led by Clinical Director David Jackson; our glamorous September Ball in Harrogate and a brand new Spartan Challenge event in Ripon. We are steadily recruiting energetic participants to rise to the challenge of our bespoke Indian Himalayas and Kilimanjaro treks next year, or to sign up for an open challenge with other UK charities to almost any destination on earth! So the planning and the fundraising continue apace. We owe much gratitude to all our supporters who bolstered our fundraising efforts throughout the recession; the following pages pay tribute to many of them. Hopefully, the Chancellor’s predictions of a recovery are accurate and we can soldier on together towards 2015 with greater confidence & renewed enthusiasm. In the meantime, we hope your summer months will be sunny, fruitful and healthy! We hope too that you will continue to support us in whatever way you can. Very best wishes Yours sincerely 21 - Community Fundraising 34 - Corporate Support 35 - Calendar of Events 2014-15 2 Sheila O’Shea Appeal Director, Yorkshire Cancer Centre www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk Summer 2014 Radiotherapy Update Julie Owens, Radiotherapy Manager writes: Radiotherapy treatment is widely used in cancer treatment and forms one of the core services provided at the Leeds Cancer Centre. Whilst Radiotherapy may be a less well-known cancer treatment than chemotherapy, it can and does cure cancer. Second only and image guided radiotherapy (IGRT). These new ways of delivering radiotherapy are transforming the lives of patients as cancer cells are targeted more precisely, increasing cure rates. Patients experience reduced side effects. The innovations also allow patients with potentially curable lung cancer who previously had no treatment options to be successfully treated using a technique called stereotactic ablative bodyframe radiotherapy (SABR). Leeds has pioneered this technique and been able to offer a chance of potentially curative treatment to the people of Yorkshire and beyond. But the work does not stop there. There is still more to do to increase the number of people being cured with the help of radiotherapy. However, new technology and software is expensive and our ‘shopping list’ cannot all be funded by the NHS. As part of the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal, a Radiotherapy Equipment Fund has been set up and we are grateful for help in fundraising for this. We would be pleased to hear from you if you would like to contribute to our fundraising in any way. Julie Owens, Radiotherapy Manager [email protected] / 0113 2067456 Everything’s coming up roses in Sue’s garden to cancer surgery, radiotherapy is involved in 40 per cent of patients where cancer is cured and in many of these it is the primary treatment used. The radiotherapy department in Leeds has become nationally and internationally recognised for pioneering ‘state of the art’ radiotherapy treatment. Support from the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation and the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal has enabled the radiotherapy team to pioneer the use of new technology and techniques in more targeted treatments such as intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) Sue Griffiths, who retired as Head of Radiotherapy at Cookridge Hospital prior the relocation of services in 2008, is fundraising for YCC Appeal. Sue is passionate about funding additional enhanced technology to benefit patients undergoing radiotherapy at Leeds Cancer Centre. Sue is a keen photographer and has had quality greeting cards recreated from photographs taken in her garden. The cards are sold at various local outlets and are proving quite a hit. Sue also sells plants from her garden, and to date she has raised £1,525 from her fundraising initiatives which include open garden days, support from staff at the Headingley Branch of Leeds Building Society and local shops. 3 YCC FOCUS ON FUNDRAISING How We Have spent your money Letter From Julie Scholefield, sister HDU Ward J81 Just to let you know we have now received and put to good use all our items from the 2013 YCC funding for home comforts! Once again on behalf of all the staff and patients on J81 I would like to say a huge thank you to you and your supporters for these items. They really make a huge difference. This year we received some lovely bedside lights to create a calmer/warmer ambience at night (and in the day!) than the fluorescent lights; we also received some torch lights for the bed spaces - these are so the staff could work round the patient at night without having to switch on the big lights again creating a more restful environment for our patients. We also acquired funding for some pictures of the dales to put on blank walls and some more bright clocks to create a more normal environment. We are currently looking at implementing the hot/cold thermaflex compresses paid for by the YCC -these will hopefully ease patients’ pain when medication has not been successful and enhance patient comfort. Finally we also used a small part of the funding for some games in the relatives area - they often have long waits and it was felt some distraction was needed for them also. So once again THANK YOU!! The funding from the YCC continues to make a huge difference to the patient environment on an otherwise very clinical HDU - we would be unable to secure the funding for these ‘luxuries’ from any other pot in the present climate. We see as a team the difference they make to the patients experience at a difficult time in their lives. Please pass on our thanks to all concerned. All the best to your fundraising team for 2014! Regards, Julie Scholefield Sister - HDU Critical Care, 2nd Floor, Bexley Wing Sister Sarah Hevetson, Sister Julie Scholefield and Ward Clerk Michelle Harland with some of the items purchased from YCC appeal fund for Ward J81 (HDU) 4 www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk Summer 2014 Clinical Research Facility Sister Samantha McAnena at the Leeds Clinical Research Facility was delighted with funding for two electric recliner chairs and a Dynamap. “They are wonderful,” she said. “Our patients are often here for 8 to 10 hours during which time we collect all the relevant information we need to evaluate the trials we run. Any help with comfort for them is a massive help, so thank you very much - these items really assist with patient comfort and safety.” Lynda Garbutt, Research Support Worker, is pictured using the new Dinamap with Stuart Lancaster, Clinical Technologist in Bexley Wing. Stuart is also undergoing treatment at the cancer centre. Lynda (below) demonstrating use of one of the electric rise recliners to Wayne Lees who is also a patient on the Clinical Research Facility. Ward 98 Pictured taking delivery of the Urine testing Kit for Ward J98 are Jenny Fielding, Sister (L) and Staff Nurse Charlotte O’Brien (R). Jenny told us, “Ward staff were delighted with the testing kit and also the sofa bed, the foot stools and the TV all these little things make a huge difference for patients.” 5 YCC FOCUS ON FUNDRAISING £23,377 raised by team ycc china trek ‘We made many inspirational and brave friends along the way. Most importantly we raised loads of money for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre.’ - Chris Pointon Between 18th and 27th October 2013, a team of trekkers representing Yorkshire Cancer Centre set out on an unforgettable, challenging and eventful trek in China. During their nine day trek they climbed sections of the Great Wall in the hills around Beijing, marvelled at the panoramic views from watchtowers, visited The Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square and met many inspirational trekkers along the way. The YCC team included five members of staff from ASDA in Leeds and altogether the team raised a fantastic £23,377 for the cancer centre. “I’m struggling for words to describe it to colleagues. Hearing other people’s stories was incredible and inspirational, it really has put things into perspective for me, and others have commented the same.” - Charlie Mills 6 www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk Summer 2014 “It was out of this world, can’t Put in to words how amazing the trip was!” - Linzi Thackeray “There’s a Chinese saying that anyone who climbs The Great Wall is a Hero – and I met some real heroes!” - Charlie Mills “The Celebratory Dinner was probably my most special memory; full of laughter, inspiring stories, speeches, eating, drinking and (a few) tears ” - Chris Pointon “I met some truly amazing people on the trek who encouraged me and inspired me, We shared laughter and tears - I truly believe I have met new friends for life.” - Ivana Agaoglu 7 YCC FOCUS ON FUNDRAISING SPARTAN RACE Train, Experience & conquer with yorkshire cancer centre Y O U ’ L L K N O W AT T H E F I N I S H L I N E ELLINGTON BANKS, RIPON | SUNDAY 28 TH SEPTEMBER 2014 5 MILES. 15 CHALLENGING OBSTACLES. Gap Year? Retired? Need a change of scene? We might well have the answer here in the Fundraising Department at YCC! Ask any volunteer why they volunteer for their favourite charity and you will rarely get the same answer – and that’s because people from all walks of life give freely of their time and energy for a variety of reasons. Develop your skills - do someone a favour - get a buzz! Knowing that your skills are valued and contributing to your community can be a tremendous confidence boost for volunteers. And if the thought of buffing up your CV, improving your skills and self-confidence, meeting new and interesting people and helping out the local community isn’t enough of an incentive, there are even health benefits associated with volunteering. It has been medically proven that ‘doing good’ can give you a heightened sense of wellbeing, a stronger immune system and a speedier recovery from surgery! Thanks to our talented artists who feature prominently when a new exhibition is launched every quarter and, thanks to live music performances, barely a day passes without some form of musical interlude to put a spring in our step! The Atrium Gallery exhibition space is booked through to 2016 and our grand piano is rarely silent. A ‘Tweet’ Story A little bird told me... Sculptor Beverley Drury’s bird exhibition has been causing quite a flutter and raising a few £s for YCC in Bexley Wing Atrium. Beverley’s husband Les is making an excellent recovery following his surgery and treatment here, and he and Beverley have held several bird raffles with all proceeds benefiting the cancer appeal. In addition, Beverley’s exquisite birds are for sale and a percentage of those sales is also donated to the appeal fund. Many of the people who bought raffle tickets have been regular visitors to the Bexley Wing for treatment and they commented on how well the exhibitions capture attention and interest, or are simply a welcome distraction. Beverley sculpts the birds largely from champagne wire and couples are now ordering their choice of bird from the wires used after popping their champagne corks from weddings and other celebrations. Consultant Oncologist Dr Emma Thomas is seen here having chosen a pair of snow buntings as a wedding gift for a friend who was treated in Bexley Wing and married in spring. Donations to cancer charities were on the bride and groom’s wedding present list, so friends secretly collected wires from the champagne served at the wedding. They commissioned Beverley to transform them into pairs of wire bird sculptures with a percentage going to YCC and the birds being given to the newlyweds - what a novel idea and delightful gift! We are very grateful to Beverley, Les and our feathered friends - Tweet! Tweet! Drawing the winning ticket at their first raffle is Les’s surgeon Mr Kostas Papagiannopoulos; Patient Ted Deal with consultant surgeon, Mark Lansdown following the Spring bird raffle. Ted and his wife Margaret, a former nurse, are allotment neighbours of Beverley & Les. 14 www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk Beverley’s champagne birds can be seen in Bexley Wing’s atrium and can be purchased through the Fundraising Office. Summer 2014 Putting a spring in our step! Three excellent pianists have been providing some lively musical relief for patients & visitors in Bexley Wing. Our grand piano is rarely silent as Wilfred, Steve & John tinkle the ivories on a regular basis and bring a little cheer to all passers-by as they fill the Atrium space with the sound of well-loved melodies. Wilfred Gilliard is 95 years young and likes nothing better than playing for, and chatting to, patients and their families for several hours each week. Wilfred worked for 40 years with the Yorkshire Power Company (and their successors). Before his retirement he spent 7 years in the forces and was resident organist at St Mary’s Church, Whitkirk for 60 years! He is now a great-grandfather and continues to lead a very active life in Leeds 8. Steve Marshall is himself a former patient who lost his wife Yvonne to Our three pianists, Wilfred Gilliard (above), Steve Marshall (below left) and John Smith ( below cancer at Cookridge Hospital over ten right) have raised over £6,000 for the appeal since January. years ago. John, who is grandfather of six, has performed the door is wonderful.” at York Minster and Leeds Town Hall, said, “The people here are remarkable and I’m privileged to play Hospital volunteer Maureen Dickinson told us, the piano for them.” John and his wife Joy have been “Everybody that comes here says they love it. It makes married for 50 years. “My wife is always at my side and it not seem like a hospital. It cheers everyone up. It’s we are trying to put a bit of happiness into the hospital. lovely.” We are truly grateful to Wilfred, Steve and John for their wonderful music and of course, their joint contribution to the YCC Appeal Fund - between them they have raised £7,057.23 since January 2014! Her Twitter followers number almost 23,000 and her #hellomynameis campaign (to influence the medical profession into showing greater consideration towards patients by introducing themselves to each patient) has gone global. Little wonder that Kate’s achievements have been recognised regionally and nationally. She was guest speaker at NHS England’s EXPO conference in Manchester in March where she presented the inaugural Dr Kate Granger Award for Compassionate Care; she lectures at seminars throughout the UK and to add to her 2013 accolades (Woman of Courage Award & overall winner of Yorkshire Women of Achievement Award), she has just been awarded the British Geriatric Society President’s Medal. Kate, who is a senior Registrar, is one of the youngest recipients of this award. Her Bucket List is still growing and she plans her dare- devil skydive in July. Kate continues with her clinical role two days a week - a job she thoroughly enjoys. If you wish to purchase a copy of either of Kate’s books, you can: Visit the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Charity Shop, Level 0, Bexley Wing Order a copy online: theothersidestory.co.uk/thebrightside Or download to your Kindle through Amazon. Organisers Gary Butterfield and Andy Dodman were again delighted with the participation and the financial result in support of Yorkshire Cancer Centre. Congratulations to all those who participated in climbing the 522 steps to the top of Leeds’ tallest building and Thank You for helping to raise £1,644.57 for YCC. Photographs by kind permission of Jo Moorby Leanne Teague Just weeks after completing her treatment in Bexley Wing, Leanne Teague (bottom middle, pictured with husband Rich) signed up for the Great Yorkshire Stair Climb in support of YCC & raised an incredible £1,182.42 from her JustGiving website. “So why am I braving the 522 steps of the tallest building in Leeds?” Leanne asked on her web page. “Well, last April I underwent surgery to treat ovarian cancer at the YCC. During my stay at the hospital and beyond, I received amazing care and support from everyone I met at St Jimmy’s, especially the angels working on Ward 98!” “Their support was immense and priceless at a very difficult time for me and my family. I want to support their work and this is why I did this crazy challenge in November. This charity is really important to me and I feel it’s my turn to give back and raise money to help them maintain the service and support they provide to their patients.” 19 YCC FOCUS ON FUNDRAISING Staff Support HMDS Staff - ‘Crafty Things’ Staff from HMDS dedicated their time and talent to produce and sell some beautiful craftwork in support of YCC. Bespoke greeting cards, mug-warmers, wreaths and unique bags were all carefully hand-made by ‘the Craft Collective’ based in Bexley Wing and raised over £350. Ev bids farewell after 18 years Senior Sister on the Oncology Unit, Ev Tatham has retired after a nursing career of eighteen years. “I was late to nursing,” Ev told us, “but I always wanted to train and when I finally got the chance at 40 - well I simply went for it!” Ev has never regretted a moment of her nursing career and she will be sorely missed by patients and colleagues on the Oncology Day Unit. However, she is looking forward to her retirement and plans at least 6 camping trips this year alone! We extend every good wish to Ev for a long & happy retirement. 20 www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk Summer 2014 Community Fundraising Joanna & Graham: How many challenges? Joanna Hood & Graham Rangel-Sharp didn’t take on just any old challenge - they decided to do the lot! In February 2012, Joanna was diagnosed with breast cancer at 32 and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, followed by hormonal and targeted therapy - all of which she received at Leeds Cancer Centre, Bexley Wing. Joanna, from Morley, told us, “Early last year I finished my treatment at YCC for breast cancer and so raising money for you has helped me mentally and physically – by getting fitter! Having something to focus on and being able to raise money for the charities that have directly helped me and others like me is helping me to come to terms with what happened and helps me look to the future. So along with my lovely partner Graham, we decided to enter a range of events through the year.” “So far, we’ve managed to complete 9 events: • Night Terror 10k at Harewood House - running around in the pitch black with a head torch! • Major Series 5k Run at Bramham park - lots of mud water and obstacles. • Endurer 8k Run in the Peak District - fell running with lots of mud, water and obstacles. • Great North Swim - 1 mile in Lake Windermere - amazing event, we’ll be doing it again. • York 10k • Yorkshire Aquathlon at Pugney’s – 1k swim followed by a 5k run - the hardest event! • Endurer 8k Run - Graham did this again! • Pain Barrier 10k at Parkwood, Leeds - ending the year with mud, water, obstacles and more mud!” “We are proud of our achievements and are hoping to raise more money this year. We are planning to do the Coast to Coast cycle ride in summer with a team of my colleagues, so we are really looking forward to that. Fiona Middleton-Walker & her friend Karen Sweeting wanted to raise funds for YCC in memory of Karen’s son William. Photographs will follow in our Autumn edition. The glamorous evening was a huge success raising £10,740 for the appeal. A further luncheon event was held in December which boosted the fund even further. Altogether with donations received in Will’s memory and a Paris half marathon undertaken by Will’s friends, Becky Sagar & Catriona Marshall, the fund now stands at £13,879.39. Karen & Fiona have agreed to use their donations to help fund the creation of a specially-focused teenage area in the Radiotherapy Department where teenagers await treatment. The area will be developed to provide an intimate ‘chill-out’ room for relaxation and a separate small private treatment room. Staff anticipate that younger patients will benefit from the distractions provided by way of Wi-Fi, TV, soft furnishings and artwork - all of which will be carefully selected to enhance the environment and help to relax our younger patients. Octogenarian Terry celebrates in style! Regular YCC patron, Terence Wood, celebrated his 80th birthday in style with family and close friends in April. Terry, who is a regular donor to YCC asked that any money intended for presents should instead be donated to YCC appeal. Terry said, “I had a very pleasant birthday over 2 days, spoiled only by the absence of my dear wife, Joyce, who died from ovarian cancer in November 2009.” Donations in lieu of gifts reached £300 for YCC Appeal. Many happy returns Terry from everyone at YCC! Having completed their mammoth Liverpool/Leeds canoeing challenge last year, it only remained for the Aire Valley Vikings Team to collect pledged sponsorship from their supporters. They set out to raise £10k but were so encouraged by supporters that they quickly decided to raise the bar to £20k. And they did it! Staff at YCC were delighted to welcome the team and present their individual certificates in Bexley Wing in March. Leeds Anglers Club Student Charlotte Renshaw wanted to support her grandfather Terry Lunn following his treatment in 2012. She decided to take to the skies in a daring sky-dive to raise funds for the appeal. For several years now Leeds Anglers Club members have been raising funds for YCC Appeal. Charlotte raised a fantastic £1,060 and is pictured (L) during a visit to Bexley Wing with her grandparents Rita & Terry Lunn and YCC Finance Assistant, Simon Moriarty. Elvis is still in the house! Cheryl Simpson, who is PA to the Pathology Management Team, and a club member, has instigated the fundraising & she and several committee members make cards and saleable items that are then sold to club members. The Club has raised £1,050 for YCC from their annual event since 2011. Cheryl is pictured with Tom Owen (R), Secretary and Bob Waters (L), President (Social Side) Deborah Burgess-Gough was delighted when the Elvis tribute event she organised resulted in a fantastic evening’s entertainment and an equally great financial result for the cancer appeal. “People were really generous,” Deborah said, “and I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it, from ticket selling to asking companies for raffle prizes. I can’t believe we raised £3,350 in one night! I’m so grateful to all my friends for all their help organising things and to everyone who donated prizes. I am already thinking ahead to next March, when I am planning another one.” 24 www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk Summer 2014 ‘Crackers’ or what?! The Helen Lamb School Of Theatre Dance in Rothwell held its bi-annual show The Nutcracker ‘Sweet’ in support of Yorkshire Cancer Centre. The children performed dances from classical ballet to modern day disco. Dance teacher, Helen Lamb, approached Jo Corrigan, mum to Abigail, and asked her to nominate a cancer charity as she was aware that Jo was undergoing treatment. Jo told us, “It was a fantastic weekend of hard work, dedication and enjoyment. The productions raised £907.02 (incl Gift Aid) from the sale of programmes, raffle tickets and auctions.” Jo is a Service Manager for Endoscopy within Leeds Teaching Hospitals and over the past two years she has been diagnosed with metastatic melanoma. Having undergone initial surgery and more recently on her neck and thyroid for recurrent disease, there followed a six week course of radiotherapy in Bexley Wing. Jo is full of praise for her treatment and added, “I was delighted to nominate YCC for the donations because I’ve received first class treatment and feel so grateful for all the care shown throughout my illness.” David Houseman & Family A fabulous fundraising event hosted by patient David Houseman and his family raised an astonishing £6,102.00. The event was held at David’s family home where a sumptuous hog roast was provided for family and friends. Dancers: Abigail Corrigan, Maddison Evans, Grace Allen, Maya Hubbert, Eliza Riding, Erin Naylor, Georgia Driver, Kassi Skerrit, Chloe Bagley, Eve Nichol & Principal Helen Hubbert. Well done to all the lovely dancers and choristers; thank you Jo for nominating YCC - we wish you well. 25 YCC FOCUS ON FUNDRAISING Support from ‘Down Under’ “I want to raise money so that the time will come when surviving cancer won’t be a question of IF, but a formality following appropriate treatment.” Joanna Taylor, Sydney Joanna Taylor is British and lives & works in Sydney, Australia. Last October she signed up to participate in a 200km cycle with an Australian charity. Joanna explained, “Someone very close to me is fighting this disease and being treated at Jimmy’s Hospital in Leeds.” Joanna’s fundraising for YCC has reached £654.58. “I’m sure I’m not the only one know knows someone who has been treated at Jimmy’s or in fact, someone who has battled cancer. A ‘Beauty’ful event “Someone very special to me was diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer in Sydney about 18 months ago. The initial diagnosis wasn’t good but she was lucky enough to catch the attention of an incredible oncologist in Sydney who treated her and without doubt saved her life. She then returned to the UK to receive further treatment and is a patient at Jimmy’s. Regrettably, having been clear from cancer for approximately 8 months, it came back again in January and your amazing, miracle working doctors are working hard at getting her better again. She is an incredible person and my inspiration.” 26 Leanne Glentworth organised a beauty event and added a tombola, cake stall, hot drinks, face painting nail polishes to help raise £246.42 for YCC Appeal. Leanne’s Mum is currently receiving treatment at the cancer centre and she is pictured here meeting her newest great-nephew for the first time. www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk Summer 2014 Our marathon Heroes! Tom Engel (left) took to the streets of London on 13th April and ran in support of YCC. “The charity is close to my heart,” Tom told us, “as they provided support that helped my granddad through his battle with pancreatic cancer. During his last few weeks he was cared for day and night by staff at St James’s Hospital along with the care they gave to us in respecting our wishes.” Tom raised sponsorship of £907.88 for the appeal fund. Hjordis & Andrew Donoghue (below) completed the Yorkshire Marathon. ‘We decided to run the marathon for Yorkshire Cancer Centre,” Hjordis told us, “because the cause is close to our hearts. We both know some incredible young people close to us who have been affected by cancer and they inspired this run. The Yorkshire Cancer Centre does wonderful work to support people living with cancer.” The couple raised £1,076.20 and were especially supporting their friend Grace Bellerby who is a patient at the Cancer Centre (and has just completed the YCC Trek Nepal challenge - see page 12 & 13) Monika Angel & Lloyd Rakusen (above right) secured places in the London Marathon and finished the race in admirable time. Lloyd is a veteran marathon runner and reached the finish line of this gruelling challenge in 4 hours 26 minutes. This was an amazing achievement as Lloyd had just completed his radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer a few weeks beforehand. Monica, who has never entered a race before, finished in a very impressive 5 hours 30 minutes. She told us, “The Marathon was fantastic! The atmosphere was brilliant and we loved the supporters cheering everyone along the way.” Lloyd added, “We’re so grateful for all the support we’ve had for both the wonderful Leeds Cancer Centre and the Leeds Jewish Welfare Foundation. Thanks especially to our friends who helped with our bag-packing at Tesco prior to the race. We’re delighted to have raised £923.12 for this excellent cancer centre.” Paula Whittles (below) has now completed several runs for YCC; they include the Leeds 10k, the Leeds Half Marathon and more recently, the Huddersfield Marathon (this she completed in 4 hours 42 minutes - 10th lady over the line!) Paula told us, “Even though it was a very tough route, it was a great day and the support was fantastic! And the weather managed to stay nice for us.” Paula raised over £400 from her latest run and overall £1,142 for YCC. Interested in running for Yorkshire Cancer Centre? Bowing to peer pressure, Martin Hutton (left) decided to join work colleagues and enter the ‘Survival of the Fittest’ 10k assault course in Manchester. Martin told us, “Friends said ‘It’ll be fun, it’ll be a great experience!’ No one mentioned it involved swimming through the canal in Manchester - in November!” Martin continued, “Mum died in 2010 at the age of 57, after a year-long battle with cancer. Thinking about her struggle and witnessing the challenges she faced, suddenly a run around Manchester seemed like a piece of cake. I really wanted to raise a few quid for Yorkshire Cancer Centre at St James’s in Leeds where my mum was looked after.” Martin completed the event in just under an hour and a half. “We all helped each other over the obstacles and crossed the line together, despite the thunder, lightning and some very painful hailstones!” Martin raised £172.50 for the appeal. Before the race, Martin added this to his fundraising page, “I’ll give it my best. I’ll try my hardest. It’s not the size of the man in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the man. Mum, this one’s for you.” Nathan Smith (right)was keen to run the 12 muddy miles of Tough Mudder, complete with 25 obstacles to support “a great cause close to my heart.” Nathan told us, “Me and the rest of my team completed the Mudder together and had a fantastic time.” Nathan raised £586.63 for the appeal. Sally Tidswell (left) continues to support YCC in true Tidswell spirit and has recently completed the Tough Mudder Challenge, raising £218.86 in sponsorship. Science teacher Sally, who is already a keen rugby player, also plays Kabaddi for England. Sally told us, “I really enjoyed the Tough Mudder - Ice baths, electric shocks and all! I will hopefully do one next year too!” Interested in getting muddy for Yorkshire Cancer Centre? Check out the challenging Spartan Race in Ripon on 28th September 2014. Turn to page 8 for more info! Andy will take on the Leeds 10k on 20th July and the Spartan Race in Ripon on 28th September for YCC. 28 www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk Summer 2014 Now you see it - now you don’t: Hair-Raising Events! Ian Westlake and friends organised a head-shave event at The Myrtle Tavern in Meanwood in support of their friend, Matthew ‘Doogs’ Donley. Ian told us, “When you are 31 years old and your friend of 20 years tells you that for the second time in the past three years he is going to have to deal with a brain tumour it comes as a massive shock. But for me the primary focus isn’t about raising money, it is about showing Matthew (Doogs) that his friends are supporting him, that they care about him and the solidarity of our friendship will help him fight this.” Matthew’s sister Kirsty rallied friends at HSBC Canary Wharf, London and raised £184.59 towards the team’s hair-raising event. Altogether, the friends raised £2,502.09 for YCC Appeal fund. Before and after: (L to R) Mick Westlake, Dave Britton, Matthew Donley (Doogs), Ian Westlake and Andy Eveleigh Jayne Bold (below) is a senior support worker at Airedale Hospital, and has said she was inspired to brave the razor after her best friend was told she had a brain tumour. Jayne said, “I’d like to raise as much money as possible as it is for such a good cause. Hopefully the money will go towards research that will help to find a cure for cancer which will help so many people in the future.” Friend Iona Daniels, 34, who until recently worked as a community nurse, said, “I have known Jayne for most of my life, as an only child she is the sister I never had. Being diagnosed with Anaplastic Astrocytoma Brain Tumour has devastated my life and that of my husband and family. But Jayne, as ever, has come up with something practical to help others.” Jayne’s JustGiving sponsorship page reached an amazing £4,187.27. Jayne sent us a lovely picture of the two friends taken recently (left) and she told us, “Iona is doing amazingly well. At the moment the tumour has gone - all considering that this time last year we only thought she’d have about 12 weeks. But with great perseverance, determination and the wonderful care from everyone in the various departments we hope to keep Iona with us till she’s old and grey. We can’t thank you all enough.” Alice Starr (right) wanted to support her sister-in-law who lost her hair during chemotherapy treatment, so she decided to show solidarity by shaving her own head. Alice and her husband John organised the event at Gipton WMC and were delighted with the response from family, friends and patrons of the club. £560.56 was raised for the cancer centre. Alice, Husband John and Guide Dog Hettie 29 YCC FOCUS ON FUNDRAISING Hitting the heights for YCC Lynn Lindley is our cover girl this issue and she braved the blue skies on Easter Monday in support of YCC. “I was really petrified at first,” Lynn told us, “but then when we’d left the aircraft and I could see the incredible view - all I could feel was the sheer exhilaration of the flight and my nerves just left me.” Lynn, who is a Medical Staffing Officer at St James’s, completed the skydive in memory of her mother, Dorothy Atkinson, who was a former patient. Lynn recognises that much of people’s focus when donating to cancer charities is on the research aspect and she feels that there are many other sides to the experience of someone affected by cancer which require extra funding, especially in palliative care. Lynn’s sponsorship has reached £469.33 and she enjoyed the experience so much she’s doing it again in June! Coast to Coast in just 10 days Michelle Stone completed the 192-mile walk from St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay in memory of her Dad, who passed away in January 2012. Michelle told us, “The walk itself was a very challenging thing for me, both physically and mentally. We did it in 10 days (2 fewer than the usual 12 days taken). The weather wasn’t always with us but never seemed to dampen the spirits too much. It was very enjoyable and I now hold some very dear memories of an experience I have wanted to do for many years.” Michelle raised £585 which was shared between YCC Appeal & Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Resounding sounds from Preston Players Preston Players raised £153.00 for YCC when, during the lead-up to Christmas, they performed their festive repertoire at Strikes Garden Centre, Garforth. This community music group comprises seventeen dedicated members with ages ranging from twelve to seventy! Musical Director, Jill Hurst, is a patient and she is pictured 2nd from the right in the photo. 30 www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk Summer 2014 ‘For Your Eyes Only’ Valentine’s Ball Saura Shey organised a glitzy Ball at The Craiglands Hotel in Ilkley in February to support Yorkshire Cancer Centre & St Gemma’s Hospice. Saura told us, “I organised the ball for two reasons; firstly to raise money for St Gemma’s Hospice as my grandfather Pat Roche had fantastic and first class care towards the end of his life there. Secondly, one of my dearest friends, Kate Morfill, is currently being treated for bowel and liver cancer at St James’s hospital. The care and medical treatment continues to offer Kate and her family great support and top rate medical treatment. With this in mind I wanted to give something back to the hospital.” Pictured (L to R): Victoria Harvey, Elizabeth Ellis, Hannah Tomlinson, Alexia Wilson, Saura Shey, Careen Murray and Kate Morfill Saura continued, “It was a great evening and everyone was dancing until the early hours. Guests were willing to part with their cash on some amazing auction and raffle prizes, generously donated by many local businesses, including John Roche who was the winning bidder for a signed Leeds United Football. Special mention must go to the Wharfebank Brewery in Pool in Wharfedale who donated a year’s free beer! Tickets to see Robbie Williams were also provided by family members Pat and Colleen Roche. We had live music by The Rebel Sounds, casino tables and a magician to entertain guests! We’re all so happy with the success on the night and of course the fantastic £7,000 that we raised which has been shared between our two chosen charities.” Having a Ball! Former patient Tony Walton has continued to support YCC following his treatment at Leeds cancer centre. His second Ball, held in March at Mid Yorkshire Golf Club, raised £1,925. This brings his total fundraising to £9,892.51 since 2012. Tony commented, “We really appreciate the generosity of all who attended the Ball and we’re absolutely delighted with this result for YCC.” Tony is pictured with his wife Corinnne. 31 YCC FOCUS ON FUNDRAISING Paula & Terry’s Special Day Pictured on their Big Day are Mr & Mrs Paula & Terry Ellis. The happy couple decided that they’d prefer to donate to their two favourite charities, Martin House Hospice & Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal, instead of receiving gifts. £403.62 was donated to YCC Appeal. Paula explained, “Myself and my step-daughter were both diagnosed with cancer last year and received treatment at St James’s Hospital and we’re both so grateful.” We wish Paula & Terry every happiness for their future together. Our Knitting Queens Two lovely ladies from Outwood, Wakefield, visit Bexley Wing twice every year and bring along their splendid array of knitted goods. All their wonderful work is then sold in YCC Charity Shop on Level 0 (The Atrium). Veronica Lickley & Diane say they thoroughly enjoy knitting the colourful scarves and soft baby wear which make ideal gifts especially around Christmas time and they’re very happy that their donated goods (and of course their precious time) is put to such good use to benefit the cancer appeal. Veronica and Diane have been friends for years and frequently get together to arrange their knitting schedules for the cancer appeal. Bare-faced for YCC! Andrea Stanley wrote to us in April to tell us about the family fundraiser that rasied £700 for YCC. “My son Robert grew his beard for a whole year to raise money for Leeds Cancer Centre, as like most people we were affected by cancer. My husband Paul was diagnosed with bowel cancer 5 years ago; he made a recovery but was then unfortunately diagnosed with a brain tumour in April last year - and then in September sadly, he passed away.” Andrea continued, “The night Robert had his beard shaved off, we decided to make it into a little event and had a raffle also - the winner then got to shave off a section of beard! We’re so grateful for all the care that Paul received and we wanted to give a little back.” 32 www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk Summer 2014 ‘VOICES IN HARMONY’ in memory of David The ‘Voices in Harmony’ concert was held at Brighouse Methodist Church in memory of David Gee. David’s friends came from far and wide with their considerable vocal and instrumental talent to enthrall a packed house. The music on offer was wide and varied including pieces by Strauss, Schonberg, Handel, Faure, Bizet, Dvorak and Gilbert & Sullivan. David’s family & friends provided ‘a magnificent spread’ during the interval. Event organiser and friend, Anthony Roland, told us, “On the evening, a truly magnificent atmosphere was generated, one that David would have been proud to be part of. He himself had a prodigious tenor voice which benefitted several light opera and choral societies across Yorkshire and Lancashire.” Individual sponsorship for the event reached £2,983.92 and a further donation from the Gee family of £2,500 resulted in a magnificent total of £5,493.92 in David’s memory and in support of the cancer centre where he received his treatment. undertaking National Three Peaks for YCC in 24 hours! 33 students will set off from the University in Leeds in the small hours on 10th June and start their ascent of Ben Nevis at 10:00am. Richard underwent surgery and radiotherapy for nasal cancer and has made remarkable progress. He and his wife Sarah, who also works for the firm, delivered the impressive cheque to Bexley Wing in February. Richard told us, “Staff from Swillington, Hebburn and Scunthorpe offices all organised various fundraising activities. Everyone seemed keen to get involved and between the sponsored cycling, fun runs, swimming, Yorkshire Three Peaks, cake bakes, Easter eggs and various raffles, £3,000 was raised for the Cancer Centre.” Richard and Sarah (R) receiving the certificate from Appeal Director Sheila O’Shea (L) Congratulations to everyone involved at Clugston & Thank you! Ford & Warren Solicitors - In memory of Paul Paul Wilkinson was honoured by his employer, Ford & Warren Solicitors following his death last year. The firm decided to invite Paul’s two young children, Elijah, 5 and Max, 8, to design the company Christmas card and raise funds for Yorkshire Cancer Centre. Paul’s wife, Charlie, spoke movingly about her late husband, “Paul was an amazing and incredible person who we all loved and cherished greatly. Throughout his last 8 and a half months at the Bexley Wing, all the staff gave Paul incredible 24/7 support and care, giving him comfort during his treatments and at each appointment. Our sons were delighted to be asked to design the Christmas cards and they jumped at the chance.” Charlie set up a JustGiving page in Paul’s memory and raised £2,430.92.
