Positive Vibrations
By John Brodie
ere are some ideas that you will hopefully be able to put
to good use. There are no random coincidences. Every
event has meaning. You have got to pay attention to what’s
going on because if you don’t you can totally fail to notice
something really important. It is very easy to get into the
habit of coasting along following your day to day habits and
routines, half asleep to what’s happening around you. That “little voice inside your head” which is commonly
called intuition is always ready to give you useful insights
about what is going on around you. Sometimes you even
get what you might call an “A-ha moment” when suddenly
a big idea becomes clear to you. Intuition is defined as a
direct perception of truth, fact, etc., independent of any
reasoning process. All too often these “golden” insights go
unnoticed or maybe ignored. Either you are caught up in
habits and routines or it’s just the din of the constant stream
of conversation going on in your head that totally drowns out
the voice of intuition.
This virtually non-stop stream of thoughts is locally
generated in your own personal bio-computer also known
as a brain. “Intuition” is when you pick up an idea from the
network, to put it in computer terms. This gives a whole
new perspective to the idea of cloud computing (cloud
computing is the use of computing resources - hardware and
software - that are delivered as a service over a network).
You may call it higher consciousness or another term but
the computer network analogy is a good fit. You’re always
connected to the “network” but there are usually so many
local software programs running that nothing but locally
generated and accumulated data is noticed.
That’s why so many personal development experts
recommend regular meditation. The intent of meditation
is to help you “turn-off” the continuous processing of local
information so that you have a few moments to make a
conscious connection with the network. In meditation, you can
slow down locally running programs so they don’t control the
full processing power of your bio-computer. This process will
help increase your ability to receive information directly from
the network and also helps reenergize your nervous system.
There are many implications if you accept this computer
network model. It means that on some level you can
always tap into a network encompassing consciousness and
knowledge on a Universal level. Now, consider the concept
that every thought in your head also goes out to the network
and like a Google query on a Universal scale, the network will
work to provide an answer.
Two things become clear. Not only should you always be
expectantly paying attention so you don’t miss the answers,
you better try to make sure you send out requests for things
you really want. Whatever you focus on – wanted or
unwanted – is what is going to come back to you. This is why
the best tip of all is to consistently work on programming
your bio-computer to send out positive vibrations!

City Honors Outstanding
Volunteers
By Nicol Jenkins, Editor
T
he City of Coral Springs has recognized
longtime volunteers for their dedication to
making the community a better place.
As part of National Volunteer Week, the Coral
Springs City Commission recently honored
a group of volunteers by awarding them
the “Lynne Johnson Award” at a City
Commission meeting.
The volunteers involved in the “Seniors vs. Crime” program
received the Lynne Johnson Award in the “Working with
Senior Citizens” category. Through their efforts they have
helped seniors in the recovery of money, have acted as a mediator
in resolving an issue with a business or contractor in order to get a
job done, and have provided assistance to victims of identity theft.
For the “Working with Youth” category, the Commission
recognized Kristen Ferguson. She helped shape the initial
Teen Political Forum events, which have impacted thousands
of teens in our community. She also volunteers in the 50th
Anniversary Committee. Rachel Rosier received an honorable
mention in this category.
The Coral Springs Police Explorers received the award in the
“Working with Mentoring” category. These 24 teenagers have
volunteered approximately 4,800 man hours per year helping
with crime prevention programs and community projects.
With their help, crime in our community has been reduced
by making residents aware of the “Make A Call, Make A
Difference” program. Carl Bierman and Bryan Levin received
an honorable mention in this category.
Lastly, Steve Brickman received an award in “Enhancing
the Lives of Coral Springs Residents” category. He has been
volunteering for over two years with the Code Compliance
Division as a Code Ranger, putting in approximately more than 30
hours on a monthly basis. As a Code Ranger, Steve’s time is spent
patrolling neighborhoods for code violations, and while doing so,
he takes the time to talk to residents and help educate them about
City codes and regulations
These awards were named after Lynne Johnson in 2009 in
memory of her dedicated volunteer service to the City of Coral
Springs. The City will continue to honor volunteers annually
with the receipt of the “Lynne Johnson Award.” Applications
will once again be available next year.
The City of Coral Springs encourages volunteerism for people
of all ages and values their contributions to make Coral Springs
the premier City in which to live, work and raise a family.

aintaining a safe community remains a top priority for
the City of Coral Springs.
The highly-recognized “Make a Call, Make a Difference”
campaign is on-going, and the Coral Springs Police Department
reminds residents to call in any suspicious activity. “This program has shown that when the community
works with their police department, together we can make
a difference,” said Coral Springs Police Chief Anthony
Pustizzi. “While we may not be able to stop all crimes, we can
certainly make it harder for criminals to get away with them.” Vehicle and residential burglaries only take seconds to
happen, so please be aware of your surroundings and do
not hesitate to call the police. Residents’ involvement could
prevent a crime before it ever happens.
Report non-emergency suspicious activity by calling the
Police Non-Emergency line at 954-344-1800.

introduced themselves to the business community. It was
followed by keynote speaker Mark Abba from MHG Insurance

Speaking of changing times, Jo DelGiacco of Cornerstone
Reality says the Tamarac housing market is on the up. If priced
right your house can be viewed by 8 to 10 potential buyers
such is the inventory and demand. This is a change for the
good as so many businesses benefit when the housing market
is moving.
The Tamarac Chamber of Commerce has also experienced
change by having a facelift at the office in City Hall. Trustee
Member City Furniture generously donated quality desks,
chairs, table and bookshelves to upgrade the Chamber office.
Other Chamber changes are the new website, the return of the
monthly Lunch and Learn, and a new look for our shop local

that affect residents and
businesses in our community.
The month of May is a busy

like to invite you to attend one
or more of our many community events.
Mark your calendars for May 11th for our free home
preservation expo. The free event will be held from 9 am to 1
pm at the Tamarac Recreation Center on University Drive.
Also on May 11th, the City is celebrating and honoring local
mothers. We will host our annual Mother’s Day Brunch. This
is always a lovely event and a great way to show your mother
how much you care. It is only $5 per person and will be held
from 11:30 am to 1 pm at the Tamarac Community Center.
On May 14th, come out for a free HOA (Homeowners
Association) liaison seminar at 6:30 pm at the Tamarac
Community Center.
Learn about health and more on May 18th at our widely
successful and free Community Health Fair. The event will be
held from 9 am to noon, at the Tamarac Community Center.
The City will once again honor the military at its May 27th
Memorial Day Ceremony. The event will start at 10:30 am at
Veterans Memorial Park at Southgate and University. Some of
the activities will include: music from the JP Taravella High

School band, light refreshments, a speaker from the military
and from Mission United, which is an initiative through
United Way that helps veterans and their families reacclimate
into society. This very special event has been held for many
years in our community. We are very engaged with our senior
veterans population and would like to make our younger
veterans aware of the Mission United program.
In addition to these great events, your City is also celebrating its
50th year anniversary. We have held various events, including a
fabulous concert with over 6,500 people in attendance, enjoying
a rocking local band, Blood Sweat and Tears. A tri-city car show,
with the Cities of Tamarac, Coral Springs and Parkland, was
also another fun birthday celebration.
Besides events, the City Commission is also working on
bring more economic growth to the community. We have
approved a Wal-Mart grocery store, which will be located
on McNab and Pine Island, and it will bring 100 jobs. Also,
a major pharmaceutical company will be coming to town,
bringing 100 new jobs, and a $50 million capital investment. In
Spring of next year, the City will cut the ribbon on our newest
recreational facility– a beautiful passive park on the east side
in the Mainlands.

business and you will have a special offer only good for the

the residents of Margate. You will need to email the Margate

reetings from the Mayor’s
office! I would like to
update our citizens on various
issues brought before the City
Commission. First, the Lennar
project at the First Presbyterian
Church has been put on hold. Some uninformed
person or persons sent flyers out stating that this was a
Section 8 housing development, which is not true. By law
and without the City Commission’s approval, Lennar can
build approximately 59 townhomes on this property. The
real issue is that they want it rezoned to allow twice that
number using flex units, and they withdrew their request
for that number.
Second, we are in the process of selecting a replacement for
suspended Commissioner David McLean. We are accepting
applications and should make a decision in a few weeks.
Third, our water reclamation program has been placed on
hold. Many variables have been revealed that do not make
it feasible or mandatory at this time.
And finally, our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims
of the Boston Marathon bombing. We discovered that the
sister of one of our Margate residents lost a limb from this
incident. Many of our residents are from the Boston area. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email
them to www.margatefl.com or call City Hall at 954-972-6454.

Crohns & Colitis Foundation
Takes Steps To Find A Cure
By Tiffany Thompson, Staff Intern
T
he Crohns & Colitis Foundation of America is aimed
at finding the cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative
colitis. The Foundation sponsors research, offers educational
programs to help the public learn about the disease and hosts
various fundraising events to help raise awareness and funds
for the cause.
The organization also offers support systems for affected
individuals. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory
condition of the gastrointestinal tract. It belongs to a group
of conditions known as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. It is
named after Dr. Burrill B. Crohn who was the first person to
describe the condition. The condition affects the end of the
small bowel and the beginning of the colon. Symptoms of the
disease include abdominal cramps and pain, constipation,
weight loss and fatigue. So far, there is only medication to
suppress the symptoms, not treat the disease. Other treatment
options include surgery and special diet and nutrition.
Ulcerative Colitis is also a chronic disease. It affects the
large intestine/colon. Researchers still do not know what
causes this disease.
Mark your calendars for May 4th. The Crohns & Colitis
Foundation will showcase its charity work when it hosts its
“Fort Lauderdale Takes Steps” walk. Take Steps for Crohn’s
& Colitis is the foundation’s largest fundraising event.
These events take place all over the country and consist of
participants raising money and awareness throughout the year
and having a big celebration at the walk to celebrate the strides
made towards finding a cure. The money raised goes towards
scientific research about these diseases. If you would like to
participate, you can walk, volunteer, make a donation, form
a team, or become a sponsor. The event registration begins at
5 pm and the walk begins at 6:30 pm and it will be held at the
Arts Park at Hollywood Young Circle.

Upon my arrival in high school, I knew that I wanted to become
something. The crazy thing is, I was not crazy for anything that
would make me something. I never had a passion before. Only did I
ever find myself feeling hollow inside. Feeling very lost, I aimlessly
wandered and joined a myriad of extracurricular activities.
I was aware that if I planned on earning a standard diploma,
I must satisfy the graduation requirement of forty hours in
the Student Volunteer Service program. However, before
my freshman year of high school came to a completion, I had
already surpassed the necessary 250 service hours to earn
myself a Silver Cord.
However, I can only owe it to two words: Key Club. By
surrounding myself with avid volunteers at Coral Glades
High School, I felt a sense of sheer delight. For the first time, I
belonged. I am so fortunate to have discovered who I am and
who I want to be in my freshman year of high school.
Prior to my realization, I actively participated in community

Coral Springs Relays
To Stop Cancer
By Tiffany Thompson , Staff Intern
A
fter a rained out Relay in 2012, Committee members, team
captains, volunteers, and participants worked very hard
to make this year’s annual Relay for Life a success. The event
was coordinated by Event Chair Rachel O’Connell, along with
her committee; she did an excellent job planning the event.
The festivities began at 3 in the afternoon at Coral Spring High
School; at this time, teams began setting up their campsites
and fundraisers for the night. At the same time, students from
Coral Springs Charter School were preparing for the luminaria
service to be held at 9 pm; the students from CSCS coordinate
the setup every year under the leadership of Michele Moore.
The students are responsible for spelling out the words HOPE
and CURE on the stadium bleachers and for lining the track
with candle lit bags that bear the names of cancer survivors
and victims.
At 6 pm, the event officially began with an opening
ceremony. Several Coral Springs officials were there, including
Mayor Vincent Boccard and Commissioners Larry Vignola,
Tom Powers, Dan Daley and Claudette Bruck. A birthday party
was held for a six-year-old cancer survivor named Aaron and
he was presented with cards, cake, and gifts. Then the survivors
received sashes and took the first lap around the track. They
were then joined by their caregivers, and then the general public.
The event continued with games, music, and fun. The fun
and games halted for a few minutes at 9 pm. This is when the
luminaria service began. All of the bags were lit and the stadium
lights were turned off. Everyone followed a group of bag pipers
playing Amazing Grace, and made a silent lap around the field.
This was a time to remember those lost from cancer.
After this, the mood picked up and people began to celebrate
and fight back against cancer. At the top of every hour, an
activity took place. There was the extremely popular Zumba

at 10 pm, followed by a scavenger hunt, and karaoke. People
continued to walk all night and into the morning.
The event culminated with a closing ceremony at 9 am, and
all who were there committed to fight back against cancer.
For those who do not know, Relay for Life is an event that is
put on every year at a plethora and diverse number of places.
It is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and lasts for
18 hours. The 18 hours represents the timeline of a person
suffering from cancer. The event raises money for cancer
support, advocacy, and research. The event commences in
the afternoon when the sun is shining and
the community is together, as the evening
nears, the patient is diagnosed with cancer.
Throughout the night, the patient is suffering
through

and

treatments. As the event culminates and
morning nears, the patient is cancer free and
becomes a survivor. The event is held on a
football field and team members walk around
the track in remembrance of their loved ones
or in honor of survivors. The event lasts all
night because cancer never sleeps.
The Coral Springs Relay is one of the largest
and most exciting relays. The fundraising
goal this year was $92,000. On the evening
of the event, O’Connell announced that over
$129,500 had been raised for the event.

Moving Through Your Fear
D
By Scott J. Brook
o not let your fear stop you! As many of you know,
I practice Family Law for a living. I deal with many
emotional clients and many of them fear the divorce process
and the detrimental effects on their children. I have known
clients that are afraid to seek a restraining order against their
abusive spouse for fear of retribution. As I have shared with
them, having fear is okay. You can use your fear in your family
law or other matters to sharpen your awareness and to prepare
for contingencies. Just don’t let your fear interfere with your
commitment to your well-being or that of your children.
When I married my wife and her three children, I was afraid
that I may not be considered a good stepdad to her beautiful
kids. When I started my own law firm 13 years ago, I had fear
that I might not succeed as my heart truly desired. When I flew
from my home town of New York City to New Orleans at the
age of 17 on my first flight to begin my college career at Tulane,
I was afraid that I may not be comfortable in a new City and
not make enough friends. When I ran my first marathon at
37 years old, I was afraid I would not finish. My fear never
stopped me. I used my fear to motivate me and to help prepare
me for what was ahead. I am sure you have done the same on
many occasions.
Don’t use fear as an excuse. If your fear is overwhelming,
seek counseling, seek a friend, read a book or choose some
30

option to control your fear. Too many people think fear is a
great reason to postpone actions or decisions that are truly
in their best interests. Do you remember that expression?
Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear
is fear itself.” Undoubtedly, you have achieved many things
to this day despite fears you have had along the way. Recall
your accomplishments and what you did to overcome any
obstacles and consider applying similar strategies to move
past whatever is in your way, including your fears, to achieve
your objectives.
There is great uncertainty in family law. Going through a
divorce is very hard, no matter how amicable. If you can focus
more on your commitment, push through your fear and have a
little faith, you will go a long way. I assure you. This, too, shall
pass. I wish you and your family much health and happiness
as you conquer your fear!

S
Should I Stay or Should I Go?
urprise, Surprise, the market is on the
rise! As inventory levels have been
depleted, home prices have started to climb at
what many would call an alarming rate. With
increases as high as 14% in some areas, sellers
are astounded by the offers they are getting,
often well above list price and in many
cases with cash. This has raised again the
#1 question homeowners have in a seller’s
market… “Should I stay or should I go?”
While prices are in fact up, and “cashing
out” when the market is hot is easy to
justify, all owners must consider their
next anticipated step prior to making
any decision to list and sell. A healthy
return on investment makes anyone smile, but if you are
simply transferring that return into another property priced in
accordance with seller market conditions, you could quickly
put yourself in a worse situation then where you started. Be
sure to plan your finances long term, don’t only focus on
the return you’ll see on the sale of your current home, but
be sure to also forecast future returns on your next. If selling
to purchase in the same area, we generally refer to this as a
lateral move– it can be attractive, but if the dollars don’t add
up, don’t make the move.
www.TheOurTownNews.com
• Our Town News •
If you’ve been holding out for the rebound, however, there
has not been a better time to place your home on the market.
With lower than anticipated inventory levels, and a shortage of
true move in ready homes– buyers are anxious to act and have
their checkbooks ready. Shall you do decide now is the time,
be sure your agent properly analyzes the current market you
are in. Closed sales are extremely important as they always
have been, but be sure to look at appreciation in the past six
months, with prices rising, strategy changes– make sure your
agent has a strong understanding of what’s happening in your
area and can properly price your home for true top dollar.
As many homeowners in this market experience multiple
offers, it is prudent to prepare yourself for this ahead of time.
There are multiple factors to consider while reviewing offers.
Mortgage type, down payment placed, percentage of loan
amount vs. purchase price and many more. A higher price with
a lower chance of loan acceptance looks nice on paper, but the
loss of a buyer that can close can and will quickly evaporate
any additional funds you may achieve by going with a higher
priced, low chance of closing offer. By sure you and/or your
agent know the flags to look for as offers come in.
We are definitely in a sellers market, and prices are rising
like a high tide. This can cause anxiety to sell, and if you are ready
now is definitely the time. Just be sure that you understand all factors
in the current market to assure a successful and profitable sale.

As We See
It… Changing
Diets… What
Happens?
P
et owners are often faced
with having to change
their pets’ food for a variety
of reasons. Some reasons may
be a recall, product has been discontinued, had ingredient
changes, or even that you have relocated. Maybe your pet just
“doesn’t like it” anymore. While all these are possible, we need
to understand how the body functions, what we can expect
and what is really normal.
Very few animals are designed to eat only one very specific
food for its entire life. All creatures are designed to eat a
variety of different foods for the purpose of meeting specific
nutritional needs based on the current condition of their body.
Even though many companies make the claim to be complete
and balanced, the dynamic, ever-changing requirements of a
healthy functioning body make it impossible for any single
food to fill these needs. This is the reason we have cravings for
different foods on a daily, ongoing basis.
Physiological requirements change from moment to
moment, affecting the requirements needed to perform all
body functions. It is obvious that animals burn more energy
when they are active than when they are at rest. An injured,
diseased, or healing body has different needs than a healthy
one. This is why it is a necessary requirement that everyone’s
pet has a variety of different foods available on a regular,
rotating basis. This approach should also be utilized with
supplements as well for the same reasons.
As most of us know, when we do a dietary change, the
body often cleanses itself of low value, indigestible foods.
This can manifest itself as soft stool, diarrhea, bloody mucous
diarrhea, and even vomit. It doesn’t mean the new food is bad
or doesn’t agree with them. This is actually normal as it is the
natural physiological process that the body uses to maintain or
promote proper health. When pets are fed a variety of foods
on a daily or even a per meal basis, cleansing is minimal and
regular. Dogs and cats naturally have soft formed stool. Hard
stool indicates constipation, dehydration, or improper foods
which are routinely added by food manufacturers in order to
make cleanup easier.
Think about our own bodies. Our stool and bathroom habits
vary based on what we have or haven’t eaten, the amount
we consume, and even the time of day. We expect our pets,
especially our dogs, to alter their natural body processes to
accommodate our schedules; but is that normal? How does
this affect their body functions?
These apparent gastric changes are not normally a sign of
illness or disease, but a change in utilization of nutrients and
the expulsion of those not needed. Food also acts to remove
harmful chemicals and toxins from our body. Different foods
remove different things from various locations within the
digestive tract. We are all familiar with dogs and cats eating
grasses and usually vomiting. We consider that a normal
healing process.
While the transition can sometimes be messy and
inconvenient, a move to a healthy, species appropriate
natural diet should be paramount. As we see it, a few days of
discomfort to accomplish a long healthy life is well worth the
time we spend cleaning up the extra mess.

Beginners’ Reading Workshop
T
his summer the Reading and Learning Clinic of Coral
Springs, Inc. will be offering a program dedicated to
beginning readers, entitled “Kids Who Read Succeed.”
Educators agree that early success at reading acquisition
is one of the keys that unlocks a lifetime of reading habits.
The program will include reading instruction containing a
balance of activities designed to improve word recognition,
including phonics instruction, and reading meaningful text.
Phonics will be taught as part of the text because it can help
children attain automatic visual recognition of spelling
patterns within words for word recognition.
Writing activities will also be included because they affect
overall reading ability in a positive way.
Comprehension strategies will focus on material that is
relevant to children as well as the material the children read
themselves. Children entering kindergarten and first grade
in the fall will benefit from the program. Two classes will
be offered. The first session will run from June 17-28, and
session three will be held from July 29 through August 9.
Each class will meet Monday through Friday from 1:30- 3:30
PM. Class enrollment is limited to ten students. To find

ould you like to see your child pick up a book and
read for enjoyment? If so, an inspiring and exciting
summer reading program offered at the Reading
and Learning Clinic of Coral Springs, Inc. will make

The emphasis on the class will be on teaching reading
through strong literature based books. Students will choose
reading materials that foster motivation to read. They will
explore reading strategies through discussions and oral
book reading done in the context of sharing.
Encouraging students personal responses to literature will
improve their ability to construct meaning and strengthen
their comprehension abilities.
Reading rates will be taught through an explicit speedreading program utilizing computers for visual eye
movements. Ultimately, the program will teach students
the value of reading. Then they can recognize their own
potential as learners.

Help For Struggling Readers
T
he Reading and Learning Clinic of Coral Springs is
offering a class designed to give problem readers
a whole new chance. The program is called Reading
Mastery, and it is offered for students in grades 2-5 who
are struggling readers.
Students in the program learn basic decoding and
comprehension skills. Decoding is taught through an
explicit phonics method that stresses letter sounds, and
blending. Students practice decoding by reading word lists
and stories, both aloud and silently.
Comprehension activities include a variety of literal and
interpretive questions. Students also learn basic reasoning
skills, such as making inferences and drawing conclusions.
The daily reading selections include realistic fiction, fantasy
and factual articles.
The Reading Mastery program is designed so that students
are given directed reading lessons and are constantly tested
as they progress through each level. This is accomplished

2B Or Not 2B…
By Jacques Wiesel
T
here begs the question. In today’s “lingo”, Shakespeare
could have written his great works in 1/4th the time, using
far less parchment and ink. He might have written ‘ILY’, which
his paramour would understand as I Love You. He might
then have added TTYL…Talk To You Later! If she responded
with “When?”, he might have written IDK… I Don’t Know!
It is now centuries later and you, as an adult, try to decipher
what’s been abbreviated. (1 asked Y the word ABBREVIATED
was Soooooooo long, thereby losing much of its powerful
message)… Finally, a short TTYL, Talk To You Later.
Imagine these same shortcutters (my word) learning to
talk that way, or having to use the full words in school. Not a
pleasant thought for them, since their brain cells would have
to do a somersault for accuracy. Although I am surrounded by
my loving family at dinnertime, I remain very lonely since I am
the only one not texting to another. When the grandchildren
visit, after a quick hug, off they go into the bedroom ready to
watch The Heat, Marlins, or whatever while texting friends.
I sit alone, waiting for some conversation to begin. Since the
emotional bond between us is very strong, I bow to their
mechanical communication methods.
When I contact someone new, I immediately shoot for a
“bagel ‘n’coffee” meeting because I want to see, as well as read
the face in front of me. I believe the eyes, period, both mine and
theirs. The main problem with initials is that they are cold in
the eyes of the receiver, therefore devoid of feeling. Acronyms
are another form of abbrev. (you know what I mean). This
time, the words usually express more than one. I use them
constantly in my lectures because they are used as a focal point
by the audience. Also, it is easier to take notes with the letters
as guides.
Another example comes to mind. I once took the Evelyn
Wood Reading program given in Garden City, Long Island. I
increased my reading speed 10 times. However, while reading
the ideas, I did not receive an emotional jolt associated with
the right brain hemisphere, i.e. the creative, feeling side. I soon
dropped Evelyn W. into the bin of forgotten memories, happy
to be enjoying the written word once again in its original form.
Words separate us from the rest of living things. A good
vocabulary has always been the mark if intelligence. It is much
sought after by job recruiters and others interested in hiring
new sales reps or employees. It is also far easier to convey
emotions via pictures, such as a heart, skull and bones, or an
electrified fence. When we say “I love you!”, endorphins kick
in and we feel good. Conversely, the words “I hate you!” will
bring acid into the stomach causing traumatic damage to both
the mind and body.
At networking meetings, I look for the ones who can
communicate effectively using the old alphabet. They have
become few and far between. The best method I know for
keeping our language in top shape is by reading out loud.
You get visual as well as auditory stimulus for a dual sensory
impression. I usually read a book a week, remembering in the
back of my mind that for a period of 3 years I read nothing
from ages 7 to 10, the formative years. This was due to the Nazi
occupation of Casablanca, Morocco.
I just came away from an eye exam at the VA, happy in the
knowledge that my eyes, aged 81 continues to serve me well.

Mark your calendars now! The community is invited to
the City of Coral Springs 7th Annual CommuniTea event on
Saturday, June 15, 2013 at the Coral Springs Marriott at Heron
Bay. Tickets will go fast and the event will offer a tea party
with plenty of delicious food and entertainment. This annual
tea party will delight you with entertainment, an array of
international teas and Tea Trivia with a multi-cultural flair.
The theme for this year’s event is “A Touch of Gold” in
honor of the City’s 50th (Golden) Anniversary. They will have
a spectacular dance performance by our talented local teens
and will have some other fabulous surprises for attendees.
“The tea party is a way to create awareness and develop
appreciation for the different cultures represented in our
community,” said Joyce Campos, Community Relations
Manager for the City of Coral Springs.
Guests are encouraged to wear native attire representing their
country of origin, as well as decorate their tables representing
a particular theme, whether it be their cultural background,
profession or civic affiliation. Guests are also asked to bring their
favorite teacup and share its special significance with the rest of the
audience. These stories are heartwarming, according to Campos.
“Guests enjoy dressing up, decorating their tables, which are
judged and awarded prizes in three different categories: Most
Creative; Most Cultural and Most Decorative, and sharing
their teacup stories. The Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee
creates an inviting and warm atmosphere where a delightful
sampling of international teas, donated by Whole Foods
Market Coral Springs, along with multi-cultural offerings of
hors d’oeuvres and desserts is enjoyed by all,” said Campos.
Participants will enjoy camaraderie and live entertainment at
the event. If you cannot attend, but want to support the event,
you may sponsor a table for $200 for ten people. Admission is
$20 per person. Please make checks payable to City of Coral
Springs/Tea. Please note that tickets will not be sold at the door.

Book Review
Fall From Grace • Author: Richard Nortel Patterson
By Fred Karr, Staff Writer
“A
re you confessing to this
murder?”
“No. Regrettably, I wasn’t
there.”
The demise of this individual
is central to Richard Nortel
Patterson’s latest, Fall From
Grace.
Richard Nortel Patterson is
worth it! Fall From Grace is
his 20th novel; I’ve favorably reviewed several of his prior
tomes, including his most recent.
At the same time I’m critiquing Mr. Patterson’s latest, I’m
about to enjoy for my own pleasure one of his earlier gems,
Conviction (2005). And, Mr. Patterson is a good guy, being a
member of the bar.
Fall From Grace moves well. The text alternates between
straight prose and effective dialogue. In my opinion, both are
crafted on a highly intelligent level.
The size of the dramatis personae is moderate. I’m not a
content critic with burgeoning casts of characters.
Even though Fall From Grace is a work of fiction, Mr. Patterson
includes certain thoughts on the trials and tribulations of a
writer. So, “Writers should have workdays”, and “One key to
writing is to show up every day.”
That is very true, as for me (being the disciplined soul that I
am), I spend every afternoon drinking endless cups of coffee
while taking notes on the books I have read with a fountain
pen on a yellow legal pad. After that, I hammer out a draft
review using a battered and rebuilt Brother electric typewriter.
In the book, Mr. Patterson continues the dialogue, “Feeling
alone in a marriage is worse than being alone.”
The author also includes a vivid oxymoron in the text. “The
dark pool of the Atlantic visible only by its absence of light.”
Well done, Mr. Patterson! Too bad Fall From Grace didn’t
include more artistic “finery.”
Find out how this man is being “battered” as you happily
relish Fall From Grace.
