HEW Federal Credit Union received its charter
and began operations on May 26, 1936, only
two years after passage of the historic Federal
Credit Union Act. The charter was issued
originally in the name of Social Security
Employees Federal Credit Union. The name
was changed to FSA Employees Federal
Credit Union in 1946 and, eventually, to
HEW Employees Federal Credit Union in
1955. In 1984, ‘Employee’ was deleted
and the name changed to HEW Federal
Credit Union.
Initially, membership was limited to
employees of the Social Security Board
in Washington, D.C. and their immediate
families. Numerous government
reorganizations and subsequent
amendments to its charter over the
years have brought the Credit Union to
its current field of membership, which
serves primarily the employees of the
Departments of Health and Human
Resources (formerly HEW) and
Education, and their families.
It took 36 years for the Credit Union
to reach its first $10 million in assets
and a membership of 12,000.
When the Credit Union celebrated its 50th Anniversary
in 1986 – just 14 years later – assets had jumped to $39
million, an increase of nearly 300%. HEWFCU surpassed
the $100 million mark in assets in 2001 and, as of June,
2010, the Credit Union serves approximately 20,000
members and holds assets of $150 million.
Growth since 1990 has been aided by a number of
significant mergers: Columbia Hospital for Women
Employees FCU, Queen of Peace DC FCU, Metropolitan
Baptist Church FCU, and HUM Federal Credit Union.
HEWFCU began offering checking accounts and credit
cards in the 1980s, and online banking and debit cards
in the late 1990s.
Executive offices for the Credit Union are located at 400
N. Columbus Street in Alexandria. The main office is in
the Hubert Humphrey Building at 200 Independence
Ave. in Washington, and branch offices are located in
Falls Church, Virginia, and District Heights, Maryland. A
part-time Service Center is located in Philadelphia and
a mobile branch was launched in 2009.
Employees of HEWFCU are active in a variety of
community activities, including Martha’s Table, Suitland
High School Canned Food Drive, Martin Luther King, Jr.
Memorial, Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing
and the Annual Credit Union Cherry Blossom Run.
Going forward, HEW Federal Credit Union plans to
continue providing products and services that suit the
needs of its target markets within the Washington, D.C.
metropolitan area, including individuals who live, work,
worship, attend school or regularly conduct business
in D.C., the City of Alexandria, and areas of Arlington,
Fairfax, Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties.

From The Boardroom
2011 will mark the 75th
Anniversary of HEW Federal
Credit Union. Reaching such
a milestone is something that
I do not take lightly, as it is a
testament of the fortitude of this
financial cooperative. For over
seven decades, the members
of this organization have been
able to pool funds together for
the financial betterment of the
body, while weathering changes
in the economic tide. Through

of the Board Inducted into CUES 2010
Volunteer Hall of Fame
Patricia J. Ellis, Chairman of the Board for HEW Federal
Credit Union, was inducted into the Credit Union
Executives Society (CUES) Volunteer Hall of Fame at
the CUES Chairmans Conference in Phoenix, Arizona on
Sunday, December 5, 2010. CUES describes the Hall of
Fame Induction as an honor that “ensures outstanding
chairmans are always remembered. CUES is pleased
to recognize these individuals who have shown
dedication to self-development, encouragement of full board development, and have
provided ideas for advancement of all credit union boards.”
Savings: Your Key to Success
HEWFCU Lends a Helping Hand
Do it now. Even without a specific goal, saving immediately
will make you feel good. Have debt? Put a little aside
anyway. Acquiring a savings habit as soon as possible is
critical. By setting a little aside each month while aggressively
paying down your obligations, you will graduate into being
debt free with a happy little nest egg in place. And in the
event of an emergency you won’t have to touch the credit
cards and feel like you’re driving in reverse.
When you are in need of a loan, HEWFCU is here to provide you
with the specific product that will help you accomplish your goal.
Whether you need additional funds to purchase a new vehicle
or home, or a number of other reasons, make us your primary
lender. We have knowledgeable staff members who will walk you
through the process and give you the peace of mind that you
need. We also have an online application that is available on our
website. HEWFCU prides itself on trust, so trust that we will do all
that we can to offer you a loan product that not only meets, but
exceeds, your expectations.
We offer the following types of loans:

For mid to long-term goals, you may opt for investment rather
than savings vehicles. After you’ve saved enough in one of
the above accounts, you can transfer your money to mutual
funds, bonds or individual stocks if you wish.
Impossible? Not at all. With careful planning, saving is the key
to successfully managing your money and getting everything
you want.
