one of extreme pleasure at the
thought of meeting our current
Catholic leader and someone who
promises to bring a new, current

I share with you
this small excerpt of
the many positive
messages that Pope
Michelle Murphy Farrell ’81, Archbishop Charles Chaput,
O.F.M. Cap., Pope Francis.
Francis shared with everyone during
his visit:
“Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Thank you for receiving me and giving
me the opportunity to be here with you
and to share this time in your lives.
Life means “getting our feet dirty”
from the dust-filled roads of life and history. All of us need to be cleansed, to be
washed. This time in your life can only
have one purpose: to give you a hand in
getting back on the right road, to give you
a hand to help you rejoin society. All of
us are part of that effort, all of us are invited to encourage, help and enable your
rehabilitation. A rehabilitation which
everyone seeks and desires: inmates and
their families, correctional authorities,
social and educational programs—A rehabilitation which benefits and elevates
the morale of the entire community.
All of us have something we need to
be cleansed of, or purified from. May the
knowledge of that fact inspire us to live

Dear Alumnae and Friends:
Blessings of good health, joy and
peace to you during 2016! Because
you receive this in print, it takes
longer to reach you and we have already lived through one month of
the New Year. So, let’s back up to
January 1 and the comforting words
of the first reading of the liturgy—
Sister Donna Shallo,
I.H.M., LF President
The Lord bless and keep you!
The Lord let His face shine upon
you, and be gracious to you!
The Lord look upon you kindly
and give you peace!
I pray that you hold on to the knowledge of God’s loving
providence, the power of God’s love and blessings for each of
you as this year unfolds…
So much has happened since the summer Sequel. I will
start chronologically. Over the summer, we were informed that
Little Flower was one of four high schools (Bishop McDevitt,
Cardinal O’Hara, Sts. John Neumann and Maria Goretti) chosen to partner with the Healey Foundation for the next three
years. The Healey Foundation invests in the sustainability and
growth of Catholic schools in three specific areas: governance,
enrollment management and development. We will benefit
from the expertise of their consultants in these areas and this
will make Little Flower even better and stronger.
The Healey Foundation, in an effort to get to know the culture of Little Flower, surveyed the parents and faculty. Before
Christmas, I received an early Christmas present when I was
presented with the results of the parents’ survey. First of all,
the Foundation was so pleased with the 176 parents who took
the time to answer the survey. They considered this a high level
of participation. What elated me to no end was the statistic
that 95% of our parents would recommend Little Flower to
other parents. I know that you, as an Alumna or friend of this
wonderful school, rejoice with us and the impact of this affirming statement.
Shortly after the school year opened, we were blessed to
have the relics of our dear patroness and her parents visit us
for the day. We are so grateful to Alumna Maureen O’Riordan,
’74 who facilitated this honor. Please take the time to read the
article about the relics on page 15.
The World Meeting of Families September 23-25 and
topped by the visit of Pope Francis to Philadelphia was ever so
exciting. While I was just a few feet away from Pope Francis
during the Liturgy in the Cathedral as he passed by our row, I
can’t imagine how our very own Michelle Murphy Farrell,
Page 2 / Winter 2016
‘81felt as she met this holy and compassionate man at her place
of work, Curran-Fromhold Prison, where she is Warden.
Michelle shared her experience in this edition. (Michelle was
among the Little Flower students who went to the airport with
the Little Flower School community in 1979 to see Pope John
Paul II off at the airport. What happens twice, happens thrice?)
October 8-19 were the most meaningful and blessed days
that I shall never forget. I was fortunate to attend the canonization of the parents of St. Therese along with 18 other
pilgrims. Special thanks to Barbara Hunter McGovern, ’55
who shared her travel experience with us in this edition. We
have included pictures but to those who have internet access,
more pictures of the trip are on our website. Besides attending
the canonization, another highlight of the trip was the audience
with Pope Francis, along with 25,000 others in St. Peter’s
Square on Wednesday, October 14, four days before the canonization. Before Pope Francis blessed US, he said that this
blessing was not just for us but for all those back home. So,
that blessing was also transferred to YOU! We were all so
conscious of the honor and blessing bestowed upon us in
“real time.”
Things continue to “hum along” at 1000 W. Lycoming
Street. We enjoyed seeing you at the Alumnae gatherings you
attended whether here at the school or at the various restaurants
and we look forward to the reunions in the second semester.
Please remain connected to your Alma Mater. For those
who have internet access, follow us on our website:
www.littleflowerhighschool.org. I am so grateful to those who
have already sent in their Annual Fund gift. I ask you to take
a look at the “Cups of Caring.” If you are not represented in
your decade, it is not too late. Let us hear from you between
now and June 30. We still have $600,000 yet to raise toward
our goal!! Thank you and God bless you!
Fondly,

Dear Alumnae and Friends:
We’ve had a very blessed and exciting First Semester, here at Little
Flower. So much happening! We
were thrilled to have the Holy Father, Pope Francis, visit Philadelphia
for the World Meeting of Families
on September 26-27. And just days
before Pope Francis’ visit we were
Sister
Joan M. Ames, IHM very blessed to have the relics of our
Director of Advancement patroness, St. Therese, and her parents, Sts. Louis and Zelie Martin at Little Flower for a day. Talk
about “Holy Ground”; you could hear a pin drop at LF that day.
We had an active reunion season ~ regional reunions in Rehoboth Beach, Newark, DE and Media, PA. Several Class reunions were celebrated throughout the Fall. I thank the reunion
committees of the classes of ’65, ’70, ’75, ’80, ’90, ’95, ’05 and
’10, who generously gave their time and energy to organize
their Class Reunions. Great job, girls! There are several reunions organized for 2016, but some classes still need coordinators. If anyone would like to chair or co-chair your reunion,
please contact me at [email protected] or call
me at 215-455-6900 ext. 118.
If you live in or intend to visit Florida, California or
Arizona, Regional Reunions are planned for February and
March. As details become available, they will be posted
on the Alumnae page of Little Flower’s website:
www.littleflowerhighschool.org
During the month of March, we engage in our Annual
Phon-a-thon. Since this is an evening event, I depend on our
alumnae and parents. We really can use your help to make this
venture successful. Many alumnae, especially those at a distance, look forward to hearing the voice of another alum.
Please consider coming to Little Flower for an evening (or two)
on March 8, 9, 10, 15, 16 or 17 to make phone calls. It really
is a gratifying experience.
Our new “LF Bracelet” has generated a lot of activity on
Facebook. Since not all have a Facebook account, I’ve included an order form in this edition of the Sequel. (They really
are quite attractive).
The Alumnae Association is sponsoring a Theatre
and Luncheon Event on June 5th. Details are included in
this Sequel.

I hope and pray that 2015 was a year of joy, happiness and
blessing for you; and may 2016 be even better. Thank you as
always, for your continued love and support of Little Flower
Catholic High School for Girls.
Gratefully,

in solidarity, to support one another and seek the best for others.
He comes to save us from the lie that says no one can change.
He helps us to journey along the paths of life and fulfillment.
May the power of His love and His resurrection always be a
path leading you to new life.”
The peace and humility of this "man" is overwhelming.
Many people commented that they were enamored by him. But
the most remarkable result was an extreme sense of calm that
seemed to envelop the facility and everyone in it, staff and inmates alike. And, of course, his spontaneity was exhibited when
he took the time to shake hands with everyone present in the
transformed gymnasium as well as all of my staff lining the hallways from the gym to the exit point.
One final gesture bestowed on us was a large box presented
to me from the Holy Father and the Vatican, which included
hundreds of photographs as well as boxes of blessed rosaries,
papal coins and papal key rings to be distributed to my staff.
This was a significant and historic event with very meaningful undertones for me both personally and professionally. As
I shared the gifts from the Vatican, some smiled, some stood in
awe and some even cried. And that made me want to share them
even more. If you have the opportunity presented to meet this
man, please do whatever you can to make it happen. It will have
a profound, long-lasting effect that will permeate your entire
being. God Bless.
(Michelle kindly gave Little
Flower one of the rosaries
blessed by Pope Francis and
they are contained in the Frist
Floor Display Case along with
other school memorabilia)

Little Flower’s Advancement Office Welcomes a New Member
Because of the amount of work
involved with entering gifts and
keeping the records up to date,
Little Flower recognized the need
to hire an additional employee. In
July, Ms, Jessica O’Neill began her
part-time position in the Advancement Office.
Jess is a 2009 graduate of St. Hubert High School and earned her degree in Music Education from
Chestnut Hill College in 2013. Fortunately, for Little Flower,
when an opening occurred in the school’s Music Department in
2013, Jess was not only ready but very capable to fill that position. Each year that Jess has been at Little Flower, she shares
more of her time and talents. Besides working with the orchestra, Jess has taken on two other major entities—she is moderator
of Stage Crew and the Garland.
“Although I am not a Little Flower graduate, I have a special place in my heart for LF. Every day in the Advancement
Office, I learn more and more about fundraising and database
work. While it is different than anything I learned when I studied music, I am really enjoying the work and I am getting to
meet some Little Flower Alums. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work in the Advancement Office when I am not
teaching music. It is such a rewarding opportunity.”
(We were really happy to Welcome Jess in July which increased our staff. However, we were saddened to say “Goodbye” to Kathy Devine Burke, ’80 in October as a result of a
residence move. Kathy, an Alumna of LF, worked in the Advancement Office for 18 years. We are VERY grateful to Kathy
for her loyal, dedicated service to Little Flower and we miss
her very much)

Dear Alumnae Family:
During the month of October, Sister Donna sponsored a Pilgrimage to
France and Italy in honor of the Canonization of Zelie and Louis Martin. I
was fortunate to be part of this group
of 18. We visited Alencon, St. Therese's
birth place, then Lisieux to see her family home and visit her shrine. This was
Dolly Ellis Brophy such a moving pilgrimage. Next we
visited Paris and all the sites. From
’59
there we went to Assisi, where we visited the shrine of St. Clare and St. Francis. Our final stop was
Rome. We attended a papal audience; something I will remember for the rest of my life. Our Holy Father truly is a Rock
Star. Thousands of people cheered and waved as he moved
through the crowd in his Popemobile. The crowning event of
our trip was the Canonization of St. Therese’s parents, Zelie
and Louis Martin. We were fortunate to be able to sit close to
the front during the canonization and to see our Holy Father
pronounce them saints; something that I more than likely, will
never see again in my lifetime. There will be more details of
this trip in this “Sequel.” During the trip, our Guide called all
of us his family. He was so right. We the Alums of Little
Flower are all family – all grads of a special school. Hopefully,
you will allow me to call you “MY FAMILY.”
As your President I would like to take the opportunity to
thank the current officers, Vice President, Joan Schott,
Secretary, AnnMarie Hill, Treasurer Jaime Davis and
Assistant Treasurer, Ann Mackin. These ladies are the ones
that take time out of their busy schedules to attend meetings,
plan events and support the Alumnae Association in all
its endeavors. Thank you also to the ladies who attend
our meetings and events.
Thank you to AnnMarie Hill for chairing the SummerFest
Event, to Suzanne Homel and Cathy Wagner for chairing
our Communion Brunch Event and to Joan Schott for chairing
the annual Christmas Luncheon. Each of these events
was successful.
We would like to continue to raise funds and therefore, we
are still looking for ways in which to have fun and at the same
time support our school. We are hosting a Dinner/Show at the
King George Inn and Bristol Theatre in June. The chairperson
is Jean Geyer. See the ad in this Sequel for more information
on this event.
We would like to have a Happy Hour in the Philadelphia
area. If someone would be willing to chair this event, please
contact me at [email protected]. Please let us know if you
have any additional ideas for fun/fundraising events. The officers are always open to new ideas.
The officers and I would like to wish you and your families
a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Little Flower began using
Constant Contact as a tool for
communicating with our alumnae,
parents and friends.
it’s the way to know what’s happening at

All we need from you is a current email address.
Hope to hear from you, soon!

ATTENTION:
Little Flower Alumnae and Friends 70½ Years of Age!
If you are age 70½ or older, you may be able to take advantage of an incentive for charitable giving. Congress recently
(December 2015) re-authorized the provision that allows donors to satisfy their minimum distribution requirements by
making gifts from their IRA accounts to qualified charities.
This could potentially provide you with a great opportunity to make a gift to Little Flower using an asset that could
otherwise be subject to income taxes when you take your required minimum distribution.
Donors age 70½ or older can ask their IRA custodian to transfer up to $100,000 directly from their IRAs to Little
Flower. The transfer is a totally tax-free transfer to the charity (not subject to the normal giving limit of 50% of AGI).
Because the distribution will be free from income tax, it will not generate an income tax charitable deduction.
This is a unique way to benefit the students and programs of Little Flower which may also make good financial sense
for you. Your financial advisor could provide you with additional information to see if this is appropriate for your personal
financial situation.
Usually, we have to wait until late fall each year to learn if Congress approves this distribution but Congress made it a
PERMANENT change to the tax law so you will be able to plan in advance for the 2016 tax year and future years as well.

A Short Story of Our Little Flower Trip to Italy
by Barbara Hunter McGovern, ’55
Well, October 19 has come and gone, but the memories of
the Little Flower Pilgrimage to France and Italy are still paramount in my thoughts. And why not? How often does one
get the opportunity to be part of such a sensational trip? T here
was so much to see and to comprehend.
I was part of a group consisting of 13 Little Flower Alumnae, 3 spouses and 1 friend of LF. Our happy group of pilgrims
are: Lorette Ryzner Bivins ’61, Dolly Ellis Brophy ’59, Frank
Capelli, Jerry and Valorie Valotta Daskilewicz ‘69, Mary Grace
DiGirolamo ‘73, Kathleen Graham Donnelly ‘54, Joe and Nora
McFadden Downey ‘73, Patricia Ingram Laib ‘74, Barbara
Hunter McGovern ‘55, Margarita Micucci Pintimalli ‘58,
Donna Pero Rhuberg ‘60, Frank and Barbara Klaczynska
Schmidt ‘64, Sister Donna Shallo, Janice Edinger Streibig ‘59
and Wanda Wesolowski ‘56.
We were together for 13 days, seeing some of the world’s
marvels. The main purpose of the pilgrimage was to attend the
Canonization of Luis and Zelie Martin, the parents of St.
Therese. Sister Donna was the planner and our leader for this
trip. The Canonization did not occur until Day 11, so let me
back up a little…
Our constant guide was from Spain, Jesus, (he preferred us
to pronounce his name Haysus). Jesus implemented all of Sister Donna’s plans that were coordinated by Alumna Kathleen
Cavanagh McDaid, ’55 and her business partner, Roseanne
Kelly Freeman of Spring House Travel. Jesus watched over
us to be sure we were always in the right place at the right time.
He was a whiz counting all 18 of every, single time!
The itinerary’s very first stop was the beautiful Chartres
Cathedral, an early 12th century Gothic structure with flying
buttresses, like those on Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and
Notre Dame Cathedral in Alencon. Chartres is famous for
elaborate stain-glass windows throughout, as we were informed by our extremely knowledgeable Cathedral guide, Malcolm Miller. There was a reliquary containing the actual veil
of the Virgin Mary called the Sancta Camisia.

Cathedral of Notre Dame,
Alencon, where St. Therese
was baptized.
Leaving Chartres, we traveled 2 ½ hours to Lisieux. But
the next morning we were off to Alencon, home of Louis and
Zelie Martin. That is the town where Saint Therese was born
in the house on Rue Saint Blaise. Attached to the home is
a lovely chapel where we each had an opportunity to pray, to
offer our petitions, and light candles to the Little Flower and
her parents.
We saw a multitude of evidence of the very prayerful life
of the Martin family, with their own prayer kneelers, religious
paintings, pictures, and statues everywhere. Outside the
home, flying over the streets, were banners displaying the
upcoming Canonization of the Martins. Next, we visited Notre
Dame Cathedral in Alencon where Louis and Zelie were
married and their children baptized. The Cathedral contains
the original baptistery and baptismal dress worn by all of the
Martin children.
Back in Lisieux, we went to the enormous Basilica of the
Little Flower. This is the place where Louis and Zelie are
buried. The entire edifice is a great tribute to Saint Therese.
We had an opportunity to visit the inside of Les Buissonnets,
the Martin’s home after Zelie died. In the backyard is a large
and so tender statue of Louis and young Therese. The garden is
just as Therese spoke so lovingly in her autobiography, The
Story of a Soul.
We were fortunate to stop at the Carmelite monastery for
mass and joined Saint Therese’s Carmelite Community in the
singing and praying of the Mass. The monastery is where St.
Therese is buried as well as her three natural sisters, also
Carmelite nuns.
Next, onto the City of Lights, Paris, the Eiffel Tower, the
Arct de Triomphe, and so many numerous Parisian historical
sites. Sacre Coeur in Montmartre was a sight to behold. It is a
big white basilica sitting on a mountain. The view of Paris in
the bottom of the Basilica steps is awesome! Oh, and did I mention that Sister Donna climbed the 300, tight and narrow steps
of Sacre Coeur alone? Up up and away! No elevator either, but

then, she was rewarded with an
even more unobstructed view of
Paris.

Our first adventure was the

Square with our group joining over 25,000 pilgrims. Pope Francis gave an inspirational and welcoming talk, and then proceeded to get into the Pope Mobile to ride all over Saint Peter
Square to the enthusiastic and somewhat wild cheering of the
entire audience. Sister Donna took a great picture as he came
within a few feet of our group. As we exited Saint Peter's
Square, our ever-trusty guide, Jesus, led us safely out from the
throngs of pilgrims, by raising and waving the tiniest Papal flag.
The Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica are truly unbelievable! I am not exaggerating! They are both magnificent
places to visit! Michaelangelo’s Last Judgment is a brilliant
masterpiece, as is all his artwork in the Sistine Chapel. Then
there is the enormity of St. Peter's Basilica, the colorful mosaics, the burial sites of the deceased popes, the seven-story
bronze Bernini canopy over the main altar. Time spent in St.
Peter’s was way too short.
Day 8 found us traveling to Assisi-- historic and religious
appeal of Assisi is located on the slopes of a mountain. Seeing
it from a distance belies its size. Assisi is where St. Francis was
commanded by God to rebuild the church. In the process, he
founded the Order of Friars, commonly known to us as the
Franciscans. We were privileged to touch St. Francis’ crypt,
offer our petitions and have a candle lit. The Basilica is loaded
with Giotto’s many frescoes describing the life story of St. Francis. But by this time, I was completely overwhelmed with all
the beauty, culture, and the lives of all the saints I had witnessed
so far.
And, finally, there is the Canonization, the highlight of our
trip! I believed it could not get any more awesome than what
we had already seen and done. But, no, there is Pope Francis
declaring Louis and Zelie as St. Louis and St. Zelie Martin, the
first married couple to be canonized. We all were so engaged
in the proceedings of the Mass, and the attending rituals. There
were two others declared saints, Mary of the Immaculate Conception Salvat Romero from Spain, and Father Vincenzo Grossi
from Italy.
Recalling the bells of Saint Peter's ringing out, with the congregation of people joining the choir singing and chanting, the
throngs of people, Cardinals Bishops, various clergy and nuns,
the Swiss Guard all surrounded by the beauty of Saint Peter's
Square, still leaves me breathless!
This is a condensed version of our trip; there was so much
more seen and done. I am so thankful for the gift from my husband, Fran, who insisted I go to experience this Little Flower
Pilgrimage. All of it was a trip of a lifetime. Our group was

Auditorium Makeover
When our Alumnae return to Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls, they always remark on how well kept the building is and that is true.
Adding to the beauty of the auditorium are the upholstered chairs. These chairs are original to the building and are a remembrance of all of our 35,000 plus cherished Alumnae,
their families and friends who sat in them over the course of four years, their first day of school, during Mass, Adoration, Ring
Mass, Assemblies, Installations, Baccalaureate, Plays and Concerts, etc.
Would you like to have a part in the restoration of the Auditorium chairs and be remembered for your contribution? You are invited to donate $150 to dedicate an Auditorium chair in memory of or in honor of someone special in your LF life (a special
teacher, director, cast friend, or someone in your personal life). If you are interested, please send your donation payable to Little
Flower High School, attention Sister Donna, along with the following dedication form.

Mary Burnett Bower reports from
Falls Church VA. “I am so proud to
have been a member of Little
Flower's first graduating class and I
attribute the good fortune I have experienced during my lifetime in
great part to Little Flower Catholic
High School for Girls.
The 1940’s were exciting years:
new high school; the big swing
band; LF girls going to Germantown YMCA Saturday night dances;
and waiting for me after school Ed
and his 1933 Ford V-8 convertible;
our first jobs; the start and the end
of World War II. (Ed was in the
Navy for 3 years, 3 months, and
5 days)
During our lifetime together we
motored around the country a lot,
hitting about 40 states, drove to
the West Coast and back on our
40th anniversary; been to Mexico
and flew to Hawaii, Bermuda,
and Canada.
We no longer drive to Florida for
the winter months. In lieu of that,
Ed takes me to Charles Town, WV to
play the one-arm bandits every
other month.
We celebrated several milestones
in 2015: January 5, Ed's 94th birthday; March 30, Ed completed 30
years of retirement; April 9 our
72nd Wedding Anniversary; May 11,
my 92nd birthday.
Lastly, we had three children: Edward, Mary, and Joseph. Ed, Jr. died
in 2003. We have 4 grandchildren,
3 great-grandchildren and family
living in PA, NJ, VA, OH, IL, GA,
TX, ID, and Peru, South America
nae who are hanging in there. “It is
hard to believe we are in our 90’s!

4th Annual Dance-a-thon
Friday, April 1, 2016 from 1:00 ~ 5:00 pm
Students are invited to participate in this exciting event. The dance-a-thon is an
opportunity for our students to express gratitude for all they have received through the
generosity of others ~ parents, alums and friends ~ by “paying it forward” and dancing
for others. All proceeds are reserved for tuition assistance for future LF students. The dance-athon is a chance for them to help LF students of the future who will follow them. Students will
pay a registration fee and also obtain sponsors for the event.
If you are interested in making a donation to sponsor the students, please send your
