Dear Friends,
From the Vicarage
The month of July falls this year between two
significant anniversaries.
At the start of August there will be, I am sure,
many reminders and events linked to the 100th
anniversary of the start of the First World
War. That costly and terrible conflict will
continue to feature for the following 4 years,
as anniversaries of different battles and
initiatives come round, so there will be ample
time to reflect on the legacy of that war. But
the anniversary at the start of June this year,
the 70th anniversary of D-Day, marked the end
of an era, as it was the final official
celebration organised by the Normandy
Veteran’s Association.
found, was a very profound moment. It gave me
a very real understanding of the words that
are known as the Kohima Epitaph, which we use
on Remembrance Sunday:
‘When you go home, tell them of us and say;
For their tomorrow, we gave our today.’
Other things stay in my mind from those trips.
We travelled from Hull to Zeebrugge on North
Sea Ferries, and on three of our four crossings
we had Dutch officers in charge of the boat.
They were always very generous, and
respectful of the veterans, more so than when
we had a British crew. I assumed it was
because their experience of being an occupied
country was a memory that was still passed
down the generations. I also recall
accompanying one of the veterans, after he
had had a fall, to the local hospital in Caen, and
having to manage with my very limited French
(and his total ignorance) in getting the
appropriate treatment, and then my having to
take a very expensive taxi back to our hotel,
some 20 miles away!
Some of you know that when I was vicar of
Holy Trinity Church in Hull, I was invited to act
as honorary chaplain to the local branch of the
Normandy Veterans. It had once been a very
numerous group, partly because units from the
East Yorkshire Regiment were among the
troops landed on Sword beach on D-Day itself,
so several of the veterans had vivid and
dramatic memories of what had taken place
that day. I was privileged to accompany them
twice on their annual pilgrimage to Normandy,
the second time when it was the 65th
anniversary of the landings. Several poignant
memories of those trips came back to me as I
watched the coverage of this year’s ceremony.
I recall the very moving moment when, in 2008,
because the group had not been able to join
the official event in early June, we had our own
service of remembrance in the cemetery at
Bayeux, with our coach driver, an ex Army
bandsman, playing the Last Post for us on his
cornet. Seeing our small group of veterans (and
their wives) surrounded by thousands of
headstones, and with, in the background, the
memorial arch inscribed with the names of
hundreds of men whose bodies were never
We are privileged to be able to celebrate both
of these anniversaries in a country that is
relatively peaceful and secure. But we are
surrounded by wars and civil strife in other
nations, and the threat of terrorism still lurks
even in our own land. How much better it would
be if we had been able to mark these dates in
a world that was at peace! A refrain in some of
the poems written during the First World War
is ‘How long?’ How long before war is ended and
we are at peace? May these anniversaries
encourage us to pray for peace and support all
efforts to bring peace and justice to areas in
our world still suffering today.
With best wishes to you all.

Mrs Evans is a hard act to follow as she was
such a good Head teacher but I am really
looking forward to the challenge of the role
and making a difference to the lives of
children in our community.
The summer term has started with some
staff changes. Mrs Diane Cowles is full time
in Key stage 1. She is an inspirational teacher
who the children love. Mr Ross Cooper who
was our PGCE student last year is sharing the
Key stage 2 class with Mrs Collins. Mr Cooper
is an excellent teacher who has a lovely calm
approach which enables children to achieve.
We are delighted to have such wonderful
staff in school.
We were delighted to have an interim report
from OFSTED to say that due to the
continued progress that we are making we
will not have an inspection for a while. It is
good to be recognised for the progress and
achievement our children make at St
Bartholomew’s.
St Bartholomew’s CE (VC) Primary School
It was with great sadness that we said
goodbye to Mrs Sue Evans who retired in
April after being Head teacher at St
Bartholomew’s for 19 years. She had made a
huge contribution to education in the
Staffordshire Moorlands as well as in
Staffordshire. On the 9th April the school
had a farewell for Mrs Evans which was very
well attended by past and present members
of the school community. We were able to
show our appreciation for all her hard work
with some lovely retirement gifts including a
painting of the school in the snow. Mr D
Mellor, Head at Ipstones spoke on behalf of
The year 4 children enjoyed a fantastic week
at Laches Wood Residential Centre. They
were in a party comprising of year 4 children
from Waterhouses, Ipstones and Manifold.
This is a very important experience as it
allows the children to build friendships
before their transition to Churnet View. We
had a lovely day at the Black Country
Museum as part of the week and followed
the life of a girl called Rose who was born in
1901. The children got a taste of life just
over one hundred years ago. They especially
enjoyed the black and white silent film in the
cinema that Rose may have seen as a young
7
adult. The school room was a very different
environment from school today and even the
staff accompanying the trip were terrifiedespecially when Mr Mellor, Head at Ipstones
was caned! The rest of the week was full of
climbing, caving and team games, some of
which were in full sunshine, some in pouring
rain!
contributions for stalls please drop them
into school. We hope that you can come and
support us on the day from noon onwards.

Headteacher
While year 4 were out the rest of the school
enjoyed a Pirate themed week. This
culminated in a Pirate meal. Parents
commented that Mrs Cowles made a very
convincing pirate!

We have been chosen by Derby University to

Brain Gym!
Exercise of the brain is as important as exercise of
the muscles. As we grow older, it's important that we
keep mentally alert. The saying: "If you don't use it,
you will lose it" also applies to the brain.
Below is a very private way to gauge your loss or
non-loss of intelligence. So take the following test
presented here and determine if you are losing it or
are still a MENSA candidate. OK, relax, clear your
mind and . . . begin.
SAT 19TH JULY’14
6pm onwards
1. What do you put in a toaster?
The answer is bread. If you said "toast", then give
up now and go do something else. Try not to hurt
yourself. If you said, "bread", go to question 2.
Duck Races,
BBQ, Snacks,
Raffles,
Bar,

Wanging,
fun & games!
2. Say "silk" five times. Now spell "silk". What do
cows drink?
Answer: Cows drink water. If you said "milk",
please do not attempt the next question. Your brain
is obviously overstressed and may even overheat. It
may be that you need to content yourself with
reading something more appropriate such as
"Children's World". If you said, "water" then
proceed to question three.
3. If a red house is made from red bricks and a blue
house is made from blue bricks and a pink house is
made from pink bricks and a black house is made
from black bricks, what is a greenhouse made from?
Answer: Greenhouses are made from glass. If you
said "green bricks", what the heck are you still
doing here reading these questions? If you said
"glass", then go on to question four.
4. Twenty five years ago, a plane is flying at 20,000
feet over Germany. If you will recall, Germany at
the time was politically divided into West Germany
and East Germany. Anyway, during the flight, TWO
of the engines fail. The pilot, realizing that the last
remaining engine is also failing, decides on a crash
landing procedure. Unfortunately the engine fails
before he has time and the plane crashes smack in
the middle of "no man's land" between East

Germany and West Germany. Where would you
bury the survivors - East Germany or West
Germany or in "no man's land"?
Answer: You don't, of course, bury survivors. If you
said ANYTHING else, you are a real dunce and you
must NEVER try to rescue anyone from a plane
crash. Your efforts would not be appreciated. If you
said, "Don't bury the survivors" then proceed to the
next question.
5. If the hour hand on a clock moves 1/60th of a
degree every minute then how many degrees will the
hour hand move in one hour?
Answer: One degree. If you said "360 degrees" or
anything other than "one degree", you are to be
congratulated on getting this far, but you are
obviously out of your league. Turn your pencil in
and exit the room. Everyone else proceed to the final
question.
6. Without using a calculator - You are driving a bus
from London to Milford Haven in Wales. In London,
17 people get on the bus. In Reading, six people get
off the bus and nine people get on. In Swindon, two
people get off and four get on. In Cardiff, 11 people
get off and 16 people get on. In Swansea, three
people get off and five people get on. In Carmathen,
six people get off and three get on. You then arrive at
Milford Haven. What was the name of the bus
driver?
Answer: Oh, for heaven sake! It was YOU, Read the
first line!!!

Hollinsclough School
It has been a very busy term here at
Hollinsclough. Our KS1/EYFS children have
been experiencing ‘Forest Schools’ at Lane
Head Farm, Newtown. Lots of people have
also visited them as part of their People Who
Help Us project, including Staffordshire
Fire and Rescue, the Police and First
Responders. They’ve also enjoyed a variety
of activities that have included making their
own Super heroes book, and pilates lessons!
KS2 have made amazing displays about
suffragettes and World War 1, and they too
have enjoyed a variety of activities, such as
an Escape Dram production about eSafety.
Year 6 have been busy with the end of term
SATs, and all the other children have taken
end of the year tests. We are extremely
proud of all of them.
All the pupils who attend on Fridays have
experienced a Faith Day, beginning with a
tour of Hollinsclough Chapel and a talk from
Rev Andrew, all of the school will soon be
experiencing our annual Outdoor Week,
which this year includes a tour of Ecton
mine, canoeing and raft building, archery,
climbing wall, camping and much support
from our Peak Park Rangers.
We have been pleased to be part of the
Cluster Sports again at Waterhouses, and
have also planned our own day of Sport, led
by the Steve Hart, brother of England
goalie, Joe Hart.
Our flexi-schooling offer has evolved once
again. We now have a ‘core offer’ of 3 days
per week, with the addition of swimming
lessons.
Our concert and prize giving will take place
on Wednesday the 16th July, and our Leavers
service on !8th July, when we will be sad to
say farewell to six of our ten year 6 children.
We will be keeping four of the children into
year 7.
Our PTA have been exceptional. The wealth
planning that has been put into place for this
year’s Fete means it should be our best ever!
Please come and join us on Saturday 28 th
June! Many thanks to all the staff, pupils,
parents and friends that have made it
another great year for us all!

working with older people,
Warslow
Luncheon Club meets every other Tuesday at
The Tea Junction at Hulme End.
Members are offered transport from their
home to Hulme End where they are met with
a very warm welcome and a cup of tea.
Following a two course, home cooked meal
(and more tea!) we hold a raffle before
transport takes members home.
We have lots of activities and outings lined
up for the summer and will always welcome
new members but particularly would like to
hear from any potential volunteer helpers
who want to join in the fun.
We always need helpers to wait on tables
,and help organise the raffle. Our club is a

function without volunteers to help run it.

JULY 1924 LONGNOR.
WHITSUNTIDE has not passed with its
merry Marriage Peal from Ivied Belfry. A
quiet and pretty Marriage by Licence
between Mr. Robt. Lownds, Booseley Grange,
and Miss Fanny Gilman, Church Street, with
Mr. Charlie Gilman, who gave the bride away,
and the Misses Doris and Gladys Lownds,
bridesmaids. We trust for a happy future,
and God’s blessing on them.
CONFIRMATION AT WATERFALL.

Elizabeth Mellor and Hilda Adams.
THE HOLLINSCL0UGH BELFRY FUND.-The
Church Council Committee has worked hard
for this and are determined to have matters
put right, on the score of safety before
another Winter, as well as to give the Bell a
chance. They solicit kind gifts. They are
asking Mr. C. Mellor to do the work.
We are glad Mrs. Mellor, sen., of Town End
has so far improved at the Hospital, that it
may not be necessary to undergo an
operation; and that Mrs Horobin, of The
Low, has successfully passed through the
amputation of an arm.
Whilst we sympathise sincerely with the
relatives of both the late Mrs. T. Bestwick
and Mrs T. Horobin, The Cheese Yard, both
of whom died quite unexpectedly this Week,
we are nevertheless assured that God has
given to each of us a life, a life for Time and
yet a never-ending life to be lived on and on
through eternity.

FLASH “ TEAPOT CLUB.” FEAST.A TIME-HONOURED INSTITUTION .What has come to be familiarly known as the
Flash “Teapot Club " Feast was celebrated
with time-honoured enthusiasm on Monday,
When some hundreds of people from a Wide
area who rarely meet except on these
occasions gathered in the village to renew
old acquaintances and to cement existing
friendships.
To give the organisation its full title, it was
the sixty-seventh anniversary of the Flash
Loyal Union Friendly Society, and at the
business meeting a very satisfactory year’s
work was recorded, the profit amounting to
over £200, which, added to investments,
brings the assets of the Society to nearly
£9,000. Mr. T. Hampson presided over the
meeting and in his financial statement
pointed out that the Society Was now
dispensing over £400 a year in sick
allowances and funeral payments, and that
the total expenses of management Were
about £30 a year.
The procession was headed by the Burbage
Band, who, as usual, gave pleasure to young
and old; and in the afternoon the Wesleyan
Chapel was crowded at the service
conducted by the Rev. \V. H, Soper.
The Rev. J. W. Plant was pleased to attend
and address the evening meeting of the
Wesleyan friends of the Leek Circuit in
Flash on June 12th, 1924. We offer our
19
sincere congratulations to the organizers of
the effort, and assure them that nothing but
good to the whole district and parish can
result from that and similar efforts. I am
grateful to those who have written me
letters of appreciation and thanks. I may say
that for seven years it was my privilege as
one of the Secretaries of the B. and F.B.S.
to work in close communion with our Noncomformist brethren.

GARDEN FETE. We had a beautiful day for
our Church and Village Hall Garden Fete on
the 30th May. It was opened by the
Headmaster of Quarnford Primary School,
Mr. N. A. Addley; Mrs. Addley crowned the
Rose Queen, Miss Brenda Damms; the Queen
and her attendants, together with the
retiring Queen, Miss June Robinson, looked
very attractive in their lovely dresses.
There was a very pleasing display of dancing
by the school children. The Fairfield Silver
Prize Band played appropriate music. A really
happy day was enjoyed by all. The various
stalls had a splendid display, and all goods
were sold.
The nett profit is £105, which is divided
between Church and Village Hall. Our sincere
thanks, to all who gave many hours of their
time, and those who gave goods and money.
Our congratulations to Mr, J. Kidd on his
appointment as Chairman of the Rural
District Council of Leek.
