mechanical equipment, call 811 at least 48 hours before you dig. Your
call to 811 will be directed to the local One Call Center who will then
contact affected utilities to have the facilities in your area marked.
Failure to use 811 is a known cause of pipeline accidents. Calling
before you dig is the law and can prevent a costly or even a deadly
mistake. Striking an underground pipeline may result in fire, explosion
and/or asphyxiation.

DEAR ABBY: You printed a letter from “Self-Conscious in Georgia” (May 15), a
young man who is insecure about the scar from his heart surgery. I have had three
surgeries for congenital defects, my first at 2 years old. Because many women’s
fashions expose the upper chest, I applied anti-scar products, which greatly reduced
the size and color of my scars.
Swimwear lines have sun-blocking swim shirts that are quick-drying and
comfortable. At the beach, “Self-Conscious” could wear a beach-themed T-shirt and
say he is reducing his sun exposure, which is a good idea these days.
As to anyone protesting his not going shirtless, true friends accept your choices, no
matter the circumstances. They won’t call you out for not following the herd.
And another thing: The young man might benefit from a cardiac support group to
lessen his feelings of isolation or inadequacy. He suffered trauma that led to and
created that scar. Now he deserves to be happy on his own terms. -WAS THERE ONCE AND I’M STILL HERE

DEAR ABBY: I am a registered nurse. That scar can be faded by using pure cocoa
butter (in stick form, not lotion). It can be purchased at the pharmacy.
I would also like to let him know that in this part of the country, survivors are
known as members of the “Zipper Club.” When I see patients with this scar, I know
they have had open heart surgery. It alerts me to a whole realm of information before

typically 2-inch in diameter, branch into household service lines which are typically
half-inch to three-quarter-inch in diameter and buried 12- to 18-inches below the
surface. The service lines end at each customer’s meter where gas is delivered.
To protect you and others in the community; federal and state government, along with
your utility provider have made your safety a high priority. Any time you dig or
move earth in any way, you are required to ìCall Before You Dig 48 hours before
beginning any digging. When you call 811, they will contact utility owners who will
locate all buried utility lines on your property, so you can safely dig and prevent a
potentially hazardous condition. Failure to use the 811 system is a known cause of
pipeline accidents. Calling before you dig can prevent a costly or even deadly
mistake.
Natural gas is a colorless, odorless gas; however, a chemical that smells like rotten
eggs is added to help detect a possible leak. Some of the signs of a gas leak include
seeing bubbling water, hearing a hissing or blowing sound from a pipeline or
appliance, dead or discolored vegetation in an otherwise green area, or dirt or dust
blowing from the ground, or the smell of rotten eggs.
If you smell gas, or just think you might have a gas leak, leave the area immediately
and call Fitzgerald Utilities at 229-426-5400 or 911 from a neighboring home or
business. Never turn on or off switches, open or close garage doors, use a flashlight
or phone/cellphone in the presence of the gas smell, as these devices may be a source
of ignition, causing an explosion.
