Annual Report 2012 - Facing History and Ourselves
FAC I N G H I S TO R Y A N D O U R S E LV E S THANK YOU ANNUAL REPORT 2012 facinghistory.org “Facing History and Ourselves has become a standard for ambitious and courageous programming . . . . At a time when more and more of our population are ignorant about history, and when the media challenge the distinction between truth and fiction–indeed, the very existence of truth–it is clear you must continue to be the standard.” Howard E. Gardner The John H. and Elisabeth A. Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education and Adjunct Professor of Psychology Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University 1 REDEFINING EDUCATION 29,000 educators were using Facing History and Ourselves in fiscal year 2012. An estimated 2,000,000 students are reached by our network of trained educators each year. 8,100 educators participated in 325 professional development offerings this year, which included in-depth seminars and in-person and online workshops. 1,100,000 visits were made to our website, facinghistory.org, in fiscal year 2012. 99% of educators participating in a Facing History and Ourselves seminar say they would recommend it to their colleagues. 93% of Facing History students are more likely to recognize the dangers of racial or religious stereotyping. 1,500 students can be influenced by one Facing History educator over the course of their careers. NEW EDUCATOR RESOURCES: A Study Guide to Accompany the Film Worse than War; A Guide to the Film BULLY: Fostering Empathy and Action in Schools; and A Convenient Hatred: The History of Antisemitism were published for classroom use this year. 48 new teachers were chosen to receive the Margot Stern Strom Teach- ing Award in 2012. They are among 226 teachers who have earned this recognition since its inception in 2006. A MESSAGE FROM Margot Stern Strom Klarman Family EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR A MESSAGE FROM TRACY PALANDJIAN CHAIR, BOARD OF DIRECTORS The need for Facing History and Ourselves today This has been an extraordinary year for Facing is greater than I ever imagined when we began History and Ourselves and in my life as I took our journey 36 years ago. Turn on the TV, pick up on the role of chair of the Board of Directors. I a newspaper, or enter a chat room and you will have the privilege of working with exceptional quickly discover that ethnic and religious violence organizational leaders, including Seth Klarman is brewing around the world. Too many children in of the Facing History family in applauding her too many parts of the world have come to believe that they don’t count. If democracy is to flourish and genocide is to be prevented, our young people must receive the kind of education that helps them develop a strong moral compass. If we assume that they will do so without help, we must be held responsible when they do not. Facing History and Ourselves is, always has been, and always will be about communicating that big ideas matter. Our work connects intellect to compassion, scholarship to self-reflection, a deep study of history to a deep concern for the future. We encourage students to think more, reflect more, and feel more. And we help them discover that the biggest idea of all is that humankind has a capacity for both enormous evil and astonishing good. Nothing I can write about Facing History and Ourselves can come close to the power of the voice of a student whose mind and heart have been opened through a Facing History class—and we reach more than 2 million students each year. It is these students who inspire us. One former student wrote, “If one by one, hundreds of children learn the evils of hatred in history, then learn to face and change that history in their own world, who is to say that Facing History cannot be a catalyst for an end to prejudice, violence, and injustice?” She understands the need for Facing History and Ourselves to continue and grow. leadership. As board members, we must continue to harness and direct our collective energies to advance Facing History’s mission and growth. Meeting the ever-growing demand for Facing History’s transforming educator and student strategies requires all of us to understand deeply the individual and global impact of our choices as members of Facing History’s volunteer leadership. We must be good stewards, we must be educated about the content, and we must work as a board to raise the funds and build knowledge of our organization. We must also continue to build volunteer leadership for the future, and I am encouraged by the exceptional and growing strength and depth on our advisory boards and boards of directors and trustees. Our annual report is a moment to recognize our philanthropic and organizational achievements, and I take special note of the endowment effort to fund the Klarman Family Executive Director, so ably co-chaired by Richard Perry and Bill Poorvu. I extend heartfelt thanks to donors to this fund who are investing in Facing History’s intellectual and strategic leadership. I express my gratitude to everyone in this report, our staff, and the many people and organizations who speak well of our work and ensure its vitality. Together, we will continue to build a better world for the next generation. We need to do this together. We are prepared to increase our impact by reaching more teachers with our programs and resources so that their students will recognize their responsibility to self and others by facing history and themselves. 4 Facing History and Ourselves 2012 Annual Report 5 The rita allen foundation: supporting urban youth the china project: a new lens on history The Rita Allen Foundation has made a leader- In 2007, a group of Facing History board members and friends led by Anla Cheng ship commitment to Facing History’s program in Kingdon with Cecilia Chan, Michelle Koo, Tracy Palandjian, Michael Tse, Charlene urban education. In addition to receiving the largest commitment in our history, the number of donors reached an all-time high, and we were honored to meet the Memphis Challenge through an extraordinary response from donors. We continue to fund the majority of our operating budget with gifts and grants from individuals, foundations, and corporations, and we are indebted to every donor for their belief in the effectiveness and importance of Facing History. Each of you stopped to think about the critical relationship between education and civil society this year; you gave of your time and resources; and you brought new friends to Facing History and Ourselves. You understand the importance of Facing History’s work, and you are helping to build a global society that links a deep and rigorous understanding of history to a future defined by thoughtful, compassionate choices and civic participation. To date, more than 100 individuals and families—including board members, staff, new friends of the organization, and even a student from the very first Facing History classroom—have joined the Gordons by including Facing History in their estate plans. We are extraordinarily grateful to these individuals for their kindness to Facing History. Members of the Remembrance Society are recognized in the Remembrance Society Honor Roll in the Annual Report. Those who wish to have their estate plans remain confidential are listed anonymously. We appreciate knowing an individual’s intentions so that we can provide Remembrance Society updates and reports and can extend our appreciation privately. For more than 35 years, Facing History has been an invaluable resource for educators nationally and internationally. It is clear that the need for our programs—and the interest in them—is expanding. With careful planning, your estate can provide for loved ones and continue to benefit Facing History and Ourselves. Members of the Remembrance Society may include Facing History and Ourselves in their estate plans through the following vehicles: bequests, charitable remainder trusts, life insurance gifts, and retirement plan assets. If you would like more information about planned giving opportunities and how to become a member of the Remembrance Society, please contact the Development Office at +1-617-735-1603 (U.S. and Canada) or (011) 617-735-1603 (outside the United States). 32 “If one by one, hundreds of children learn the evils of hatred in history, then learn to face and change that history in their own world, who is to say that Facing History cannot be a catalyst for Facing History and Ourselves 2012 Annual Report an end to prejudice, violence, and injustice?” - student 33 Anonymous (5) Beth & Seth Klarman Nancy Sommers & Patrick Hays Vicki & William Abrams Lisa Krakow Georgette Grosz Spertus Jennifer Aubrey Larry M. They start to see that history doesn’t just happen, that it occurs because of actions people like themselves decide to take.” - teacher 14,000 students and 600 teachers heard firsthand accounts from individuals who lived through the Holocaust and other witnesses to history through our survivor network. Facing History engaged almost 4,000 educators in a host of online professional development this year as we continued expanding our online educational presence. We have trained and supported over 5,000 educators from countries outside the United States ranging from Albania to Zambia. The Edmond J.
