Scotland and Glasgow in the records of slave compensation Reports
Scotland and Glasgow in the records of slave compensation Reports for the Legacies of British Slave-ownership workshop, Glasgow, 4 September 2010 These reports are work in progress: clarifying and developing the information we have about individual owners and the networks of association they were embedded in is central to the project. If users of this report have further information about any particular individual we would be very pleased to hear from you; and if you would like further information about someone please contact us to see if we can help. Catherine Hall, Nick Draper, Keith McClelland, Rachel Evans and Ben Mechen Legacies of British Slave-ownership project, Department of History, UCL, London WC1E 6BT. E-mail: [email protected] http://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs There are two following reports : pp. 2-18: A summary alphabetical list of individuals whose names in the claim notes are linked to an address in Scotland (excluding Glasgow). pp. 19-100: An alphabetical list of individuals who have been identified as having Glasgow associations. This report includes notes on the claims. Scotland (excluding Glasgow) in the Slave Compensation Notes Scotland (excluding Glasgow) in the Slave Compensation Notes Explanatory notes This is an alphabetical list of individuals whose names in the claim notes are linked to an address in Scotland (excluding Glasgow). Most of these individuals were awarded compensation for the slaves they owned, and are therefore listed as claimants in the Legacies of British Slave-ownership database. A small minority made unsuccessful claims or are listed in the claim notes as enquiring about a claim or acting on behalf of another claimant. There will be other claimants who resided in Scotland but who haven’t yet been identified as such in the claim notes. Please note, this is a list of individuals linked to addresses in Scotland rather than a list of people who are known to be Scottish. For example, Scots residing in the West Indies who made no mention of their previous Scottish address in their claim forms are not included. The addresses given in the claim notes vary in their level of detail from simply “Scotland” to a full postal address, for example “23 India Street, Edinburgh”. The address for each individual is given in the fullest form in which it appears in the claim notes. The claim reference is in two parts: the colony or (in the case of Jamaica) the parish of the property to which the slaves were registered, and the claim number which was assigned to the claim during the compensation process. Some individuals made more than one claim; these claims are listed when a proven link has been established to identify two or more instances of the same name as referring to one individual. Possible or probable (but unproven) links are not given. Virtually all were awarded compensation for the enslaved they owned, and are therefore listed as claimants in the Legacies of British Slave-ownership database. A small minority made unsuccessful claims or are listed in the claim notes as enquiring about a claim or acting on behalf of another claimant. There will be other claimants who resided in Glasgow, or had associations with the city, but who haven’t yet been identified. Notes to the report on slave-owners Claimant’s name First claimant: 2nd/3rd claimants: Claim: Estate: No. of enslaved: Compensation awarded Absentee or Resident? Rentier or Merchant? The number in ( ) after the claimant’s name refers to the identifier (ID) used in the database and has no other significance. However, where two people appear in the list with the same name but with different ID numbers it means that they were either not the same person or have not yet been identified as being the same. For instance, John Stuart (ID: 22700) may or may not be the same as John Stuart (ID: 46076). The same person may appear more than once: this is where they made more than one claim. Each person is referred to as a 1st, 2nd or 3rd claimant: This is the name of the person to whom the compensation was awarded. Usually this was the person who owned the enslaved. Sometimes, if the land and slaves were mortgaged, or if the slave-owner had other debts, then creditors were awarded the compensation money instead. If slaves were owned jointly, or if part of the compensation was awarded to creditors, or if ownership was shared among the heirs of a deceased owner, then the other names of awardees are given here. The full list of claimants is included underneath the claim. Each claim is identified by the colony where the enslaved were resident (and, in the case of Jamaica, by the parish as well). Within each colony or parish, each claim was given its own unique identifying number, which was used in the original claim forms and quoted in all correspondence at the time. This is usually the name of the land owned by the slave-owner, where the slave worked. In some cases, slaves worked in domestic service in an address in a town, or were hired out to work on the estates of other slave-owners – in this case, the estate name may not be given, or the enslaved may have worked elsewhere. The total number of slaves in the claim for whom compensation was awarded. The total compensation awarded for the claim. Whether the first claimant was resident in the colony. Whether the first claimant owned slaves as a rentier or was Page 20 of 100 Glasgow in the Slave Compensation Notes primarily a merchant. Some further details of each claim, such as whether the ownership of the slaves was disputed and other people had lodged counterclaims, are not included here. Claim notes: Most of these notes were made by Nick Draper for his own use during the research for his PhD thesis (‘Possessing slaves’: ownership, compensation and metropolitan British society, UCL, 2008) and subsequent book (The Price of Emancipation. Slave-Ownership, Compensation and British Society at the End of Slavery [Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2009]). Please ask for explanations if required. “Parliamentary Papers” refers to the Parliamentary Return published in 1838 listing all the awards which had been finalised by that date, covering some 93% of the total compensation. House of Commons, Parliamentary Papers 1837-38 Vol. 48 (215). References beginning T71 refer to the records of the Slave Compensation Commission set up in 1833 to administer the compensation. These records are kept in the National Archives at Kew. Claimants (first claimants and others) referred to in the notes are usually given by their initials, so find a match for the initials in the names of claimants. Many estates were heavily mortgaged to them, their whole business connected to the arrangements to which the mortgagers were strictly tied down. All the sugar must be shipped home in THEIR ships, under THEIR agency both here and at home, and so much every year; all plantation stores to be brought of THEM; and other pickings, highly profitable to the mortgagee, who got full rates and commissions: considerably more so than planting was to unfortunate mortgagers, who got about as much as would just keep them on their legs. Other produce such as coffee and cotton was subject to like conditions. Here I found the Executive of this formidable establishment, Mr George Rainey, whom Mr Pattinson had told me I would find ‘very keen’: slow-spoken, he had a sharp visage , high thin nose, and a cold quiet calculating grey eye.
