RABBINIC THOUGHTS
From Your Rabbi
How Sukkot Can Save the World!
Is it the BEST FESTIVAL for the 21st Century?
Ralph, Af Gadol & Friends demonstrate Sukkat Shalom!
After the intensity of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Sukkot can seem like an afterthought…
IT’S NOT!
In fact, to the great rabbis it was called THE FESTIVAL in the Talmud! A celebration of the Harvest
and an opportunity for thanksgiving (wait for it…). It was a clear demonstration of our connection to the natural world and our reliance on the Earth’s bounty. Can you think of a more powerful lesson for our own
time?
Many of us delight (that’s the word!), in building our own sukkot in backyards, on decks or balconies
(– are you building a sukkah this year?). But it’s the shared element of this mitzvah that has always impressed me. Thanks to our magnificent Men’s Action Club and their subcontractors, we have a magnificent
communal sukkah beside our temple building! Our Torah School students and families are in on the decorations! In the 70 years of our congregation’s history, our sukkah has grown and grown and GROWN! The Erev Sukkot service is one of the favorites of the whole year as generations of members cuddle under blankets and sing under the full moon and stars. The weeklong festivities conclude with our wonderful Simchat
Torah celebration, opening a Torah scroll to surround the congregation in a sweet embrace of tradition and
promise. Don’t you miss it this year!
…and after all, it’s called “Sukkat Shalom” in our liturgy: “A Sukkah of PEACE!” Fragile, beautiful, the
shared work of many hands and hearts…like so many of the things that we know really count in this world of
ours, in this life of ours…
Check the schedule here in the bulletin, or on your High Holyday ticket. And join us in the Sukkat
Shalom!
Chag Sameach, Rabbi Garry Loeb

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
October is a very busy month at our temple, as it is at all other temples. There is Kol Nidre and Yom
Kippur, followed by Sukkot and Simchat Torah and a variety of other Mentsch Maker, Torah School
and BETY events. We’ll be seeing a lot of each other this month!
One particular event that I would like to point out is the Book Fair on Sunday, October 26th. Please
stop by and browse the vast collection of books for both children and adults. There really is something there for everyone. Tucked away in the corner, you’ll see a table set up with representatives
from our temple’s committees. We hope you’ll stop by and learn about the many committees we
currently have. You may find that you are interested in joining a committee such as;
Mentsch Makers,Torah School
Membership, Ritual, Social Action
Continuing Ed, House and Grounds
Budget, Ways & Means
Shoah Memorial, Lehiyot Shayach
Bikkur Cholim
Campership, College
By-Laws, Outreach, Programming
You DO NOT need to be a board member to serve on a committee and ALL committees can use
new ideas and renewed enthusiasm. Please consider joining a committee and lending a hand
where needed.
This is my last opportunity to remind you about our upcoming 70th Anniversary Gala Celebration
taking place on November 7-9. You’ve received your invitation in the mail and I hope you will be
there to celebrate with us! Join us on Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday for as much of the celebration as possible. This will truly be a special weekend!
Again, I wish you a happy, healthy and sweet new year!
B’Shalom

MENTSCH MAKERS
“Oh the more we get together, together, together
The more we get together, the happier we’ll be.
‘Cause my friends are your friends
and your friends are my friends.
The more we get together, the happier we’ll be.”
At Mentsch Makers Pre-School, HAPPY is what you will see when you come and visit our children in a variety of age appropriate classes. Our little “mentsches” have settled beautifully into their classroom routines. Apple picking on September 29th was so much fun
and we now know everything about the color RED.
Our first program Back to School Bar-b-Que was a huge success. We had over 70 children and their families in attendance. A great
big thank you to our chefs Irv Newman, Rabbi Loeb and Larry Berman for the most delicious hamburgers and hot dogs. I would also
like to thank BJ wholesale club for their donation of a $25 gift card for this program. But most of all, I would like to thank you, the families for coming out and supporting a Mentsch Makers program.
We dipped apples in honey for a sweet new year, made yummy applesauce, and ate a variety of store bought items made from apples.
We also learned that apples come in many colors – red, yellow and green were on our list of favorites and that apples have a variety of
tastes: from bitter to sweet!!
The Mentsch Makers children created the most beautiful decorations for our sukkah. Our three and four year olds experienced eating
and singing with Rabbi in the sukkah. On Sunday, October 12th at 4:30pm, we will be joining our K-2 Torah School classes with Pizza
in the Hut and on Friday October 24th, at 5:30pm, Mentsch Makers will have our first family program – Dinner, Dessert & Daven. This
family program is our first formal opportunity to welcome all our pre-school families to Mentsch Makers and our temple. The children
will create a wonderful Shabbat project and enjoy traditional Shabbat goodies. This is open to the entire congregation so please try to
join us and meet our Mentsch Makers families.
Exciting News: Mentsch Makers Pre-School has continued to expand its All by Myself program by adding an extra half hour beginning
in September rather than in January and having the option of children coming to school on a 3rd day. Our 3 year old classes now have
the option of a 3 or 5 day program. Both of these additions have been very warmly received by our families. Our enrichment classes
this year include Feel the Beat and Books Alive on Mondays; Kinder Cooking and Math Mania on Wednesdays and Arts and Crafts on
Fridays. These programs begin with Tot Café and end at 2:00pm allowing the Mentsch Makers children to stay in their familiar and safe
setting while enjoying after school programs. Our Early Drop Off program offered our parents the flexibility of adding a half hour to their
day and based on its success, we are continuing to offer this program.
Please mark your calendars: Mentsch Makers and Torah School will co-sponsor another Sunday/Funday on April 26th for children
and families. We will have many community professionals as well as games, food and entertainment for all. Please contact
Carol if you are able to help on our committee or on the day of the event. Thank you.
We have been spending as much time as possible playing outside in our playground – riding trikes, sliding down slides, climbing, playing “red light, green light – one, two, three”, blowing bubbles and laughing as our parachute covers us all. What fun!!
Until next time…………….

SISTERHOOD
What is a friend? My short definition is “one with whom you can share your troubles and joys.” There is an old saying, “A walk to
a friend’s house is never long.” Of course nowadays, with our global society constantly on the move, it may be a little difficult to literally take a walk to a friend’s house. I know my friends have scattered to the four winds so now I let my fingers do the walking looking
up phone numbers and writing and e-mailing or I may need the help of my car or a plane or a train to keep in contact. However, they
are always there, “one for all and all for one.”
We, in Sisterhood/WRJ want to “Friend” you. We would love you to join in our activities and in so doing be a part of us and, by
extension, a part of our Temple. We are now in the middle of the Jewish New Year season with Yom Kippur beginning October (kol
nidre) Third, Sukkot October 9th and Shemini Atzeret/ Yizkor/Simchat Torah October 16th. This is a time for reflection and making
resolutions. Here are some of our programs to reflect upon:
♥ The first of our October events is the Breast Cancer Walk on Sunday, October 19th at Woodbury Common at 7:30am. Once
again Sisterhood/WRJ member, Linda Herrman, is leading the way. Let’s join forces to win the fight against breast cancer by walking
and/or contributing to our “Sisters of the Hood” team. Our goal is to raise $5,000 and to show our faces and to show our shirts (if you
have them.) Please drop off a donation in an envelope marked “breast cancer walk” in our Sisterhood box in the Temple office. If
you wish to contact Linda, her e-mail is [email protected].
♥ And, talking about joining, please remember to return your 2014 – 2015 Membership Application/Form and dues and to Save
the Date, Monday, October 27th for our Paid-Up Membership Dinner. Stay tuned as to time and place. This is always a wonderful fun-filled evening. (New Temple members are invited to a free year of Sisterhood membership; however, please remember to
also send back your membership form from the letter you received.) In fact everyone should send back the forms because the information you send back helps us in printing our “Little Pink Book Directory” of Sisterhood members.
♥ The Social Hall renovation is now in progress. The walls have been painted, new drapes have been ordered and the
chandeliers have been spray painted silver to match the new décor. We are looking forward to the next phase which will be replacing
the ceiling tiles and refinishing the wood on the floor. We are grateful to everyone who has supported our fundraisers and Vacation
Bonanza (the big one) because you made this renovation possible. Thank you to the committee: Michelle Feder and Stefanie Melillo
who got the ball rolling and to Shelley Silberlicht, Marcie Weisberg Shelly Sherman, Wendy Balentine, Stefanie Melillo, Michelle Meyers, and Lisa Friedman. A very special “thank you” to our dynamic duo, Michelle Meyers and Lisa Friedman who took time off from
work to spray paint the chandeliers while also working on getting out membership notices.
♥ Again, thank you to Tammy Sabat for a very successful fundraiser and social event on August 12th. The Summer Luncheon
and Game Day was all that we hoped it would be with games, delicious food, wonderful raffles and prizes and good company.
Thanks also to Tammy’s committee members Maddy Kahn, Wendy Dembeck, Lois Klipper, Mary Haberman, Marcie Weisberg, Rachel Landris, Linda Keitel, Adele Perlowitz Kibrick, and Wendy Balentine. We are all looking forward to next year!
♥ Thank you to all who participated in the Friday night installation of the SH/WRJ 2014-2015 Board on September 19th. We are
looking forward to an exciting new year.
♥ Program Chair, Carol Nirenberg, is looking into many new and enticing programs such as: a weekend at Kutz, pies and dance
class, Spa Day, Garage Sale, Chanukah cookie decorating, wine tasting (with MAC), family pizza dinner, martial arts class as well as
Rosh Chodesh Torah studies Please check e-blasts, Facebook, our temple website, Kol Beth-El, Bima notes, and flyers for updates
on our programs.
♥ Sisterhood is working in conjunction with MAC to order a special Saturday morning Kiddush for Monroe Temple’s 70th Anniversary celebration. Please put the weekend of November 7th-9th on your calendars.
♥ Our Judaica Shop (Judaica Treasures and Treats), has a continually changing array of gifts for your family and friends. We are
now well stocked for the holidays. The shop is open every Sunday when Torah School is in session. When the shop is not open,
purchases can be made through the Temple office or by calling Shelly Sherman at 783-1523.
♥ Uniongrams can be sent for any occasion and are only $5.00. Contact Ann McGuinness at [email protected] or
phone 845-708-5008 for personalized attention.
Have I whet (sharpened) your appetite? Please resolve to join us. We are only a “short walk.” L’Shana Tova! May it be a sweet
and happy New Year 5775 for you and yours.
We are always accessible if you need more information.

TRUST FUND FOUNDATION
As of the close of markets of June 23rd, the total balance of the Trust Fund Foundation is now over
$219,000 with some adjustments coming soon because of dividends and capital gains in mostly the Vanguard
funds. Although we have not actively sought additional donations recently (staying clear of regular Temple
fundraising activities), we would certainly welcome and appreciate them. You can be sure they will be well
invested. We are continuing to work on a possible long term giving proposal.
Lastly, the Trust Fund Foundation Board of Trustees is looking for one additional member for our board. If
you have an interest in serving on this important team, please e-mail Evan Strager at [email protected] for more information.
The 2015 Entertainment Books are on sale in the lobby every Sunday there is Torah
School. The price is the same as last year, $25.00. If you want a book and are unable to make it to
the Temple on a Sunday, contact Larry Migdel at 782-6557
